‘The Knife’ Review: Nnamdi Asomugha’s Thriller About the Slipperiness of Truth
Image
With The Knife, Nnamdi Asomugha turns a night of domestic crisis into a taut moral thriller about the slipperiness of truth. The film unfolds in near-real time, tracing how a Black family must cope with the fallout of their choices after a woman is discovered in their kitchen and ends up bloodied on the floor with a knife in her hands.

Written by Asomugha and Mark Duplass, The Knife begins in tranquil domesticity as Chris (Asomugha) recalls in voiceover his grandmother’s warning that “our choices determine our future.” As he says good night to his daughters Ryley (Aiden Price) and Kendra (Amari Price), he deflects the sting of them agreeing that he smells like beer, then slips into bed with his wife, Alex (Aja Naomi King), as their newborn child sleeps in a crib next to them.

Hours later, Chris wakes to a sound, and after heading downstairs with a pocket knife,...

Why Is ‘The Hunting Wives’ So Racy? Behind Netflix Series’ Unusual Deal As It Eyes UK Release & Hopes For Season 2 After Strong US Debut
Image
Some Netflix U.S. subscribers have been taken aback by the raunch quotient in the new culture-war soapy thriller series The Hunting Wives, which features a lot more nudity and sex than the average Netflix drama, even more than the streamer’s steamy Regency romance Bridgerton.

That is because most viewers are not aware of The Hunting Wives‘ unusual history — up until a month and a half ago, the Lionsgate Television-produced series, starring Malin Åkerman and Brittany Snow, was a completed Starz drama. Starz, known for pushing the boundaries with racy content — as exemplified by its tagline, “We’re All Adults Here” — was reportedly not high on The Hunting Wives, and its split from Lionsgate allowed it to find a new home.

Another former Starz series that features frequent sex scenes, Hightown, which ran on...

Mark Duplass Does Not Have a Plan to Save Indie Filmmaking, but He Believes in Two Women Who Do
Image
Remember 2012? The U.S. box office hit nearly $11 billion, Netflix became a streaming service, and Emily Best launched Seed&Spark with what seemed like a radical mission: Build your audience, control your financing, own your distribution.

“The amount of time in my life I was dismissed for that shit,” she said.

Cut to June 2025 and Vulture publishes “Mark Duplass Has a Plan to Save Television.” The interview detailed self-distribution of his limited series “The Long Long Night,” but here’s the thing: The plan wasn’t his. It was Emily’s, the same one she’s pushed for 13 years.

The Breakthrough Moment

It took over a decade, but Emily’s vision — now partnered with Christie Marchese’s distribution platform Kinema — finally looks less like wishful thinking and more like a lifeline.

“I wrote ‘Netflix is bad for the film business’ in 2018,” Best said. “Lots of people whispered to me, ‘I totally agree,...

Hulu Has Been Hiding an Underrated Sitcom That’s a Perfect Replacement for Ted Lasso Fans
Image
Looks like you’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem! The League on Hulu is an underrated sitcom that can prove to be a perfect replacement for Ted Lasso fans in the long run.

Following the story of six friends, this Hulu watch offers a raunchy, different, and equally compelling take on competitions, in contrast with Ted Lasso’s more optimistic, team-building, and heart-warming approach. This fit is a surprising watch for fans of the sports-adjacent comedy genre. Let’s explore more on the lines of the plot and the fact that it serves as an alternative to the highly acclaimed show.

Six Months After the L.A. Wildfires, Here’s Who’s Still Picking Up the Pieces
Image
Like many Angelenos, Mark Duplass felt a desperate desire to help friends and neighbors displaced by January’s Los Angeles wildfires and sprang into action, distributing gift cards and fulfilling fire victims’ Amazon wish lists through his nonprofit, The Soul Points Fund.

Six months after the fires, the Morning Show star is surprised to find how much need remains in the city, even as news cameras have moved on and donations have waned.

“There are still so many people sleeping in tents on their burn sites or bopping around to hotels,” says Duplass, who co-founded The Soul Points Fund with his wife, actor/filmmaker Katie Aselton. “I thought at the six-month point we’d be much further along at helping people move into their permanent homes.”

Nonprofit organizations say they experienced a surge of generosity in the immediate aftermath of the wildfires that killed 30 people, displaced 150,000 and destroyed more than...

Emily Deschanel Reveals Season-One Panic Attacks That Nearly Ended Her “Bones” Run
Emily Deschanel
Emily Deschanel says she came close to losing her lead role on “Bones” after panic attacks and a single late arrival during the show’s first season, speaking on David Duchovny’s “Fail Better” podcast released this week. She recalled the studio labeling her “late and unprepared,” a critique that left her “beside myself” and filled with shame.

Long 14- to 16-hour days, little sleep and dense medical jargon compounded the pressure, especially because she lives with Adhd and dyslexia. Deschanel said she would go home and “cry in a bathtub every night,” unaware the tightness in her chest were panic attacks. A traffic delay that made her 30 minutes late prompted creator Hart Hanson to warn that executives were questioning her professionalism, pushing her to vow never to be late again.

Hanson and co-star David Boreanaz arranged a larger trailer, quieter rehearsal space and a line coach—changes Deschanel credits with restoring her confidence.

The Backrooms | Mark Duplass joins A24 film adaptation of viral YouTube series
Image
Directed by Kane Parsons, and an adaptation of his viral YouTube series, The Backrooms has added Mark Duplass and more to its cast.

Update 11th July 2025: Already set to star Chiwetel Ejiofor, A24’s film adaptation of viral YouTube series The Backrooms has added some more names to its cast. Among the new names you’ll find Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett (True Detective), Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking) and Avan Jogia (56 Days).

They’ll join Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve in the horror, directed by Kane Parsons – the young filmmaker behind those earlier viral videos, which largely take place in eerily empty and Escher-like office spaces. The Hollywood Reporter provided us with the casting news, which emerges as The Backrooms’ shoot gets underway this summer.

There’s no release date confirmed as yet, but we can probably expect The Backrooms to emerge at some point in 2026.

Our original story follows…

A few weeks ago, we learned that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) are set to star in the film. The show has always pulled from real-world events, and this season is no different. Past seasons tackled the pandemic and the January 6 insurrection. Now, AI takes the spotlight, raising some big questions about what’s real and who can be trusted. The official logline from Apple says the Uba and Nbn networks have finished their merger, and now the team has to deal with “newfound responsibility, hidden motives and the elusive nature of truth in a polarized America.” It also warns of “deepfakes, conspiracy theories and corporate cover-ups.”

In the teaser, Jennifer Aniston’s Alex walks along a row of windows.

Jennifer Aniston's 67% Rotten Tomatoes Apple TV+ Twisty Drama Returns With Tense Season 4 Trailer
Image
With just two months until the premiere of The Morning Show, it's finally time to start getting hyped up for the newest season of the hit series. Today, Apple TV+ unveiled a teaser trailer for Season 4, and it showcases all the major players of the next installment of the show. The release date is set for September 17, and once again Jennifer Aniston (Friends) and Reese Witherspoon (Big Little Lies) return as two cutthroat journalists who both shape and are impacted by the culture of a fast-moving newsroom.

The teaser trailer doesn't reveal much in terms of story, and also provides no sneak peek of the scenes that we're about to witness in Season 4. Instead, it focuses on the intrigue and how the show will continue to be a war in which the weapons are narratives, manipulation, moral conflict, and bottom lines. The concept is pretty simple: Alex Levy (Aniston) and...

‘The Morning Show’ Season 4 Promises the Exact Drama You Crave
Image
Television, news, and media are in crisis — and what better vessel to comment on that state of affairs than Apple’s “The Morning Show” Season 4?

In a teaser for the upcoming installment of Jay Carson’s drama series from showrunner Charlotte Stoudt, Alex (Jennifer Aniston) and Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) are back at their daily wars with the audience, the network, their colleagues, and each other. Picking up almost two years after its predecessor, the ten-episode fourth season starts out in spring of 2024, just a few months before a fateful U.S. Presidential election that would change the course of history.

From an Apple press release: “In a world rife with deepfakes, conspiracy theories and corporate cover-ups — who can you trust? And how can you know what’s actually real?” The teaser of Alex and Bradley walking past a reflective wall in slow motion looks deliberately artificial as a result — to...

Jennifer Aniston Teases ‘The Morning Show’s “Layered” And “Emotional” Fourth Season
Image
The Morning Show, with its dramatic exploration of current events through the lens of a popular broadcast news program on the fictitious network Uba, shows no signs of slowing its pace, says star Jennifer Aniston, who teased an “emotional” forthcoming fourth season of the Apple TV+ series.

“The Morning Show is just a beast to film,” she told People recently. “It is layered, it’s complicated, it’s emotional, it hits on a lot of topics and current events, so let’s just say, it’s not Friends.”

Aniston, who also executive produces the series alongside fellow co-star Reese Witherspoon, said wearing dual hats on The Morning Show “takes a lot out of you.” She continued, “We’re involved in every single aspect of the show, on top of just the performance side, which is a big piece of it. But I’ve got incredible support, and we have such an incredible team.

Everything to know before 'The Morning Show' Season 4 hits Apple TV+
Image
Deepfakes, AI, and a messy merger set the stage for another explosive season.

I’ve been hooked on “The Morning Show” from the word go. I mean, come on, that first season featured Steve Carell teaming up with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston for a sharp, behind-the-scenes drama about morning news? I was all in before the first episode even aired. And honestly, this is kind of Apple TV+’s whole deal: take massive talent, throw them into big, complicated stories, and let the sparks fly. Every season has been messy in the best way — full of power plays, bad decisions, and people trying (and failing) to do the right thing. Now with Season 4 dropping Wednesday, Sept. 17, we’re in for another wild ride. Let’s break it all down. Here’s everything to know about “The Morning Show” Season 4.

Joe Marinelli, the Cross-Dressing Bunny Tagliatti on ‘Santa Barbara,’ Dies at 68
Image
Joe Marinelli, the veteran character actor who amused and attracted admirers as the cross-dressing mobster Bunny Tagliatti on the NBC soap opera Santa Barbara, has died. He was 68.

Marinelli died Sunday in Burbank after a battle with stomach cancer, his wife of nearly 34 years, musician Jean Marinelli, told The Hollywood Reporter. She said they never had a fight.

After playing Bernardo “Bunny” Tagliatti from 1988-90, Marinelli portrayed bank robber Pauly Hardman on the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light in 1993 and another crook, Joseph Sorel, on the ABC soap General Hospital from 1999-2001.

More recently, he recurred as Uba director Donny Spagnoli on the first three seasons of the Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show.

“I really loved him and what he stood for,” Mark Duplass, who plays Tms executive producer Chip Black on the show, said in a statement. “We didn’t spend 10,000 hours together, but we were spiritually aligned in many ways.

Ellen Pompeo has two ideas for Good American Family season 2, but it would look different
Image
Good American Family starring Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass premiered in March 2025, with the season finale debuting on Hulu on April 30. Now almost two months later, the streamer still hasn't announced whether the drama is renewed or cancelled. Either way, Pompeo has a couple of ideas should the show get more. So was might Good American Family season 2 look like?

The Grey's Anatomy star is one of the producers on the series, having done so through her production company, Calamity Jane. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter recently, the actress shared that she and creator/co-showrunner Katie Robbins have been in talks with Hulu about where the story could go next.

She revealed that she thinks their version of Kristine Barnett's story is done, and perhaps the series could turn into an anthology. One idea they've been mulling around has her really excited and hoping the streamer will be on board.

‘Sweet Relief’ Trailer – Mumblegore Film Draws Comparisons to Mark Duplass & David Lynch
Image
A woman’s dangerous inclinations, a sadistic child killer, and a panic surrounding an online murder challenge reveal the insidious violence of a small New England town in Sweet Relief.

The arthouse horror film will be available on VOD exclusively through Eventive on June 27 before a wider VOD release later in the year via Art Brut Films. It will also have a one-week theatrical engagement at Laemmle Town Center in Encino, CA beginning June 27.

Drawing comparisons to the works of Mark Duplass, Richard Linklater, Todd Solondz, and David Lynch, the indie movie is written and directed by Nick Verdi.

Parents and teachers in a small New England town are in a panic over kids playing Sweet Relief, an online murder challenge in which the player must nominate someone they’d like to see die. Three teenagers play the game as a joke, unaware of the dire consequences awaiting them.

Meanwhile,...

Dermot Mulroney, Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, Tony Revolori, Liana Liberato, Josh Segarra, Mason Gooding, Samara Weaving, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Jack Champion, and Devyn Nekoda in Scream VI (2023)
10 Must-Watch Serial Killer Movies on Netflix To Stream
Dermot Mulroney, Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, Tony Revolori, Liana Liberato, Josh Segarra, Mason Gooding, Samara Weaving, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Jack Champion, and Devyn Nekoda in Scream VI (2023)
Serial killers in cinema have always terrified us, not just for their brutality, but for how they reflect the darkest corners of human psychology. Whether inspired by real-life figures or invented entirely in fiction, these films and series use murder not merely as a plot but as a lens to explore obsession, guilt, charisma, and fear. From the masked mayhem of Scream VI to the icy restraint of Watcher, this movie list gathers titles currently streaming on Netflix that dig into the minds of serial killers — and those who survive them. These aren’t just slashers; they’re portraits of violence and its ripple effects.

1. Scream VI (2023)

Scream VI stretches the meta-slasher franchise into bloodier, bolder terrain by taking the Ghostface killings to New York City. This time, it’s not just the violence but the legacy that haunts. The film leans into generational trauma, genre awareness, and urban anonymity...

“Do We Pivot and Do an Anthology?” ‘THR Presents’ Q&a With ‘Good American Family’ Star Ellen Pompeo
Image
Ellen Pompeo is taken aback by the reception to Good American Family. The Hulu limited series inspired by the true, viral story of Natalia Grace — the Ukrainian-born girl with severe dwarfism (played by Imogen Faith Reed) who was adopted as a child by the character Pompeo plays, Kristine Barnett, and her husband Michael (played by Mark Duplass) in 2010 and later accused by them of faking her age — has become a ratings hit for the streamer (the April 30 final episode was the biggest finale of 2025 across Hulu and Disney), a water-cooler series and an Emmys contender. Pompeo stepped back from her beloved role on Grey’s Anatomy after nearly two decades to pursue a project that she could disappear into when playing a role starkly different than her fan-favorite groundbreaking doctor.

“If my first thing after Grey’s was a total dump, it would have been pretty embarrassing. (Laughs.) But listen, it happens.

Jay and Mark Duplass on Competing at Emmys and Playing Against Their Good Guy Personas in ‘Dying for Sex’ and ‘Good American Family’
Image
Mark Duplass says he has come up with a “dream moment” for this year’s Emmy Awards — and it sounds more like a nightmare. The idea is that both he and his brother Jay are nominated in the category of outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or TV movie — Mark for “Good American Family,” Jay for “Dying for Sex.”

“We’re at the awards ceremony, sitting next to each other, and we’re both nervous as hell,” Mark says. “And they say, ‘The winner is….mppphhh Duplass!’ I just hear ‘Duplass’ and I run up there and have a full-on ‘Zoolander’ moment where I thank Jay profusely for taking the back seat to me on this one and don’t realize that it was him that won the award. That would be my dream.”

It’s a scene straight out of a Duplass brothers movie, one that makes Mark laugh and Jay cringe.

Mark Duplass Talks Creating “Better Deal” Than Streamers Offer With Indie TV Production
Image
As the streaming landscape continues to drastically change, Mark Duplass is investing in himself and advises other creators to do the same.

The Golden Globe nominee recently detailed how he and brother Jay Duplass are approaching indie television production now that the streamers’ system of financing is “not working as well” as it was five years ago.

“I’m hoping we can build a real ecosystem of indie television the way that, from the late ’90s through today — even though it’s not as healthy anymore — there is a true indie-film ecosystem,” Duplass told Vulture. “TV festivals like SeriesFest in Denver or Atx Fest in Austin can become marketplaces that executives are forced to go to because, if they don’t get in there to buy that show in the room, they’re going to miss out.”

He added, “I truly believe there’s a confluence of interests here, if...
