Deva Katta’s “Mayasabha” (TV Series 2025) is an epic spin on the Telugu political minefield. Leaders clash, orchestrations are set off, and there are all sorts of reckonings. Caste looms large, and honesty has to be wielded doubly to stave off greed and subterfuge. Or at what point does the thirst for power upend all noble intentions and suck into an ugly vortex the brave and the righteous? You encounter moral conundrums along the journey, the toughening of the heart—a sobering up to vicious, innocence-shredding power games that spare none once they erupt.
Beginning in mid-1995 and gradually wending back to the 70s over a three-decade span, the show delineates trajectories undertaken by Rami Reddy (Chaitanya Rao) from Kadapa and Kakarla Krishnam Naidu (Aadhi Pinisetty) from Chittoor. They weather the brunt of rigid iniquities, caste violence, and Naxal insurgencies, all of which make decisive shifts in their visions and ideals.

In a new installment of his This Day That Year series, Subhash K Jha looks at the time when Sunny Deol spoke about Bobby starring as Bhagat Singh in 23rd March 1931: Shaheed.
It’s easy to dismiss this as yet another Bhagat Singh bio-pic, 23rd March 1931: Shaheed, in the current cascade of such films, more so when the director Guddu Dhanoa doesn’t have the reputation of making particularly classy films.
But Dhanoa’s version of the by-now familiar story has its own smouldering intensity. It projects a vitality quite dissimilar to Raj Kumar Santoshi’s The Legend Of Bhagat Singh . And yet , the vitality in 23rd March 1931 Shaheed is no less vital.
An organic intensity runs through Dhanoa’s exacerbated narrative. Sometimes, specially in the second-half he gets carried away with all the bombastic outpouring of rhetorics and rhyme -–‘screams’ that patriotic films in mainstream Hindi...

Long before the fabulously fertile bucolic fable Dupahiya, Sonam Nair directed this sassy feature film, Gippi, for the visionary producer Karan Johar.
Meet Gippi then. She is free-spirited, unaffected, overweight, and under-confident, though not willing to show it(her lack of confidence, that is). Gippi’s story could well have become a trite, pedestrian exercise in clichéd sequences woven around the acne-ridden years of awkwardness and self-discovery. Instead, debutant director Sonam Nair gives us vibrant vignettes from a young, defiant teenager’s life in a posh school (beautifully shot by cinematographer Anshuman Mahaley) on the hills with her single mother and her kid brother who seems to like all the girlie things more than Gippi does.
Fearless and without inhibitions, Nair’s narration takes us through Gippi’s life of unfettered self-discovery. The film is littered with reams of well–written scenes where we see Gippi going through situations that help her grow up.

Raj Kaushal’s Shaadi Ka Laddoo is 21.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan Song Has Waseem Barelvi’s Couplet(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan was a monster at the box office. It’s the biggest hit of Srk’s career. The film hit the right spot with its first song, Zinda Banda Hai. A popular couplet from the poem of renowned Urdu poet Waseem Barelvi was used in the song. The quote goes, “Usoolon Pe Jahaan Aanch Aaye Takraana Zaroori Hai, Jo Zinda Hon To Phir Zinda Nazar Aana Zaroori Hai.”
However, not many know that Barelvi didn’t want Jawan makers to use his couplet, and it took King Khan himself to convince renowned poet Waseem Barelvi to use his couplet in the song. The Jawan team had approached the veteran Shayar to seek permission to use parts of his famous quote. However, the octogenarian was quick to say no to the makers. Then,...

Nothing that Ajay Devgan has done in the past prepares us for the poise, poignancy and sensitivity of his directorial debut. U, Me Aur Hum is one of those tender and tactile melodramas that leave you with minty thoughts and dewy eyes.
The heart is completely at the right place as Ajay, turning director with a élan that thumbs its nose gently at all those who scoff at his actioner’s antecedents, tells the story of a husband whose gentle ministrations take his Alzheimer’s stricken wife from her absentminded youth to blanked-out old age.
The journey gives us insights into the man-woman relationship and the intricate commitments of a marriage as seen through the eyes that go beyond the romance and excitement of courtship to an area where dark clouds gather over a relationship and threaten its annihilation.

In this edition of This Day That Year — Subhash K Jha looks back at Irrfan Khan’s 2017 film Blackmail, directed by Abhinay Deo. The director also takes us inside that unique dance sequence. Read On!
Abhinay Deo’s Blackmail is a virgin territory in the comedy genre. It is heady and hedonistic, cocky and compelling in the way the comedies of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee used to be. If only these veterans could see the sexiness that underlines all gender wars. Blackmail is a closeted Hrishikesh Mukherjee comedy with oodles of extra voluptuousness.
In the strikingly shot (by cinematographer Jay Oza) opening, we see Irrfan struggling to stay afloat through his office hours, fighting shy of going home because the spark has gone from his marriage and wife who watches cheesy song sequences on television to while away her time. Actually, it was never there, the spark, I mean.

It’s been two days since I have watched Dibakar Banerjee’s “Tees” (2024), and it has bothered me to no end, my inability to articulate my thoughts about the film in a coherent fashion. Perhaps that could be because Banerjee, unlike many other filmmakers dealing with social messaging, is extremely cognizant about the evils plaguing the current climate and how insidious they actually are in exhibiting themselves—be it in the garb of bureaucracy or of jealousy.
You can argue that “Tees” is a grab bag of social messages that Banerjee and screenwriter Gaurav Solanki throw into a blender, but that would take away from the nuanced and controlled storytelling the film exhibits within its anthology structure. Essentially taking the conceit of three different anthologies of storytelling united by Banerjee’s own acerbic perspective on the present, a further wrinkle is introduced by creating the three stories as part of a multi-generational tapestry.

During the shoot, both Arav and Ajith Kumar were inside a Hummer for a scene. Some films mean well, but are unable to convey their true intentions to the audience. Shobhayatra could be considered an honourable failure. It deserves a mention in the arc of Indian cinema primarily for going into an area that has never been attempted before.
In its scathing satire on the death of idealism and the premature annihilation of a sense of historicity in a society governed by greed and moral short-sightedness, Shobhayatra gets into a queer and unrecognizable piece of drama on screen.
Adapted from a well-known play by Shafaat Khan Shobhayatra, it converges on the lives of a group of professionals who masquerade as legendary national leaders. Among these masters of the charade, it’s only Divya Dutta as phony Jhansi Ki Rani, impregnated and torn by internal strife (representing the divisive tensions in the country), who manages to make an effective statement of her parabolic role.

Akkineni Nagarjuna’s past comments about actor Nani recently resurfaced online. An old video of his statement is now viral. During an interview, Akkineni Nagarjuna spoke about Nani’s mobile phone usage on the sets of their film Devadas. He said that it annoyed him. His statement has now spread on social media. Fans have different opinions about it.
Actors usually avoid using mobile phones while shooting. Many filmmakers believe that phones can cause leaks of important scenes, which can affect a movie’s buzz. Director S.S. Rajamouli is very strict about this rule. He does not allow phones on his sets, and it’s implemented even for the recent Mahesh Babu SSMB29 film. Many other filmmakers also follow this rule, and even actors like Ram Charan follow the same practice for films.

nitting Revisiting the striking Badlapur, Subhash K Jha takes a look back at the drama directed by Sridhar Raghavan’s which released 10 years ago on February 20th.
“The tree remembers, the axe forgets,” reads a proverb in the opening credits of a film that left me feeling like both the tree and the axe. While the film’s pain-lashed topography in the first overture is exceptional—with every vein on Varun Dhawan’s temples ringing a bell—the second overture gets audacious, tongue-in-cheek, subversive, and sometimes downright silly. As if the tree decided to get even with the axe by cutting off its own branches.
Cast in the mould of the greatest redemptive dramas Badlapur has an ambitious ambience of unmitigated doom irrigating almost every frame. It’s as if director Sriram Raghavan and his co-writer Arijit Biswas wants to shut out all light from his protagonist Raghavan’s life.

On the Mehfil stage at the Spoken Fest 2025, Divya Dutta left an indelible mark with stories of love, loss, and resilience, taking the audience through a personal journey—one that was moulded by her mother. The National Award-winning actress, known for her versatility and carrying a certain gravitas in her performances, brought the same depth to her storytelling.
Dutta commenced the performance by narrating a childhood memory, painting a picture of two invisible queues—one for mothers and one for daughters. Her belief was that the children had the liberty to choose their mother. In a corner, the actress saw a beautiful woman, draped in purple, calling out, ‘Hey, it is Nalini.’ From that moment, a bond so formidable became her strength during this lifetime.
Divya’s voice exuded warmth and yearning as she shared stories of growing under her mother’s love. Her dupatta had comfort and a feeling of home,...

There is an abundance of activity in the second season of the well-regarded Bandish Bandits. Director Anand Pandit and screenwriter Amritpal Singh Bindra dive into the debate on shastriya versus modern sangeet with just this much of a penetrative gaze as to ensure that the viewers’ interests remain unflagging.
The series not keen on exploring the debate on classicism and modernity at length. What Bandish Bandits wants to do, and does with much charm and some sensitivity, is to tell a sturdy attention-holding story.
When we meet Radhe Rathod this season, he is at the crossroads. The Gharana no longer commands the respect it once used, though luckily the series still does.
The crumbling climate of the classical legacy propels Radhe’s journey away from home in Season 2. It is a tumultuous journey in search of a befitting climax to the show.

You might expect to find a cinematic event called the Yellowstone International Film Festival in the northwest corner of Wyoming. But you’d be off – by about seven thousand miles.
This Yellowstone – the festival, not the national park – is based in the pulsating heart of New Delhi, India, with its fifth edition getting underway on Friday. Yiff, which runs through Nov. 20, includes documentary and narrative features and shorts, and programming that reflects a kaleidoscope of films by women, fresh talent and industry-established filmmakers, and a strong representation of stories of people with disabilities and from the Lgbtqia+ community. In a few short years, it has emerged as one of the most prominent film festivals in India, advocating for independent Indian and International cinema.

This year sees the festival expanding to Mumbai — the nerve center of entertainment in India — for its opening night slate.
