Even though Yellowstone may have ended with Season 5, the Dutton family’s story is still going strong.
The second season of 1923 just finished, and more shows like 1944 are on the way. With all these Duttons across generations, things can get confusing. So here’s a simple breakdown of who’s who in the Dutton family, from the early days in 1883 to modern-day Yellowstone.
1883 – The Beginning
James Dutton
James was the first Dutton to head west. He fought in the Civil War and wanted a new start. He left Tennessee with his wife Margaret, their kids Elsa and John, and other family members. After Elsa died, they decided to stay in Montana.
Margaret Dutton
James’s strong and brave wife. She helped lead the family during the hard journey. After Elsa’s death, she and James made Montana their home.
Elsa Dutton
Elsa was their oldest child. She loved horses and adventure.

Yellowstonehas officially come to an end with an epic two-part fifth season, which reveals the final fate of the Dutton family ranch. Taylor Sheridan's hit neo-Western series spent five seasons building up the Duttons' fight against the greedy land developers who wanted to take control of their ranch. In Season 5, Part 2, the battle comes to a head, and blood is spilled.
In one of Yellowstone's most controversial moments, John Dutton is murdered when two mercenaries break into his home in Season 5's midseason premiere. This was a shocking moment that launched the final episodes of the series into overdrive, but it didn't necessarily come out of nowhere. Yellowstone dropped plenty of hints revealing that John Dutton was always going to die.

Denim Richards' Colby Mayfield died in a December episode of Yellowstone after being trampled by a horse while trying to help Finn Little's Carter.
"The thing that I think is such a gut-punch about Colby's death is that in a season where there are all these twists and turns and dark forces and giant narrative swings, Colby's death is so powerful because it's so simple," episode director Christina Voros told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's a dangerous job, and this kind of thing happens and it happens in a split-second. This death comes as a shock because it's so simple, and it's so grounded in the world in which all these characters work that it's profoundly tragic.

This post contains spoilers for "Yellowstone," including season 5.
"Yellowstone" is full of real gut-punch moments. The series kicked off with a shocking death when Lee Dutton met his fate in the premiere episode. That very much set the tone for the show moving forward, which at times felt like a really well-shot soap opera and less like a premium drama. That isn't to knock Taylor Sheridan's hugely-popular neo-Western; "Yellowstone" has managed to maintain its appeal in part due to such shocking developments making the series unmissable — at least for dads. Sam Elliot might have trashed "Yellowstone" as a result of its soapy tendencies, but he also starred in one of its spin-offs, so he can't hate it that much.
This continued right up until the show's fifth season, with season 5 part B opening with the controversial death of Dutton family patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner). Perhaps the most contentious...

Spoiler Alert for Yellowstone
While every Yellowstone character within Kevin Costner's Dutton family tree has strengths and weaknesses, some characters rise to the top. Yellowstone's cast of characters have had dynamic stories over five seasons of Taylor Sheridan's hit neo-Western show on the Paramount Network. However, on the whole, Yellowstone's characters mostly stay the same throughout the series. In the face of the violence and drama in Yellowstone, the qualities that distinguish Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) from someone like Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) are resolute.
Beth and her husband, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), stand out in Yellowstone. The lovebirds' prominence in the Dutton Ranch's saga is hardly a mystery, considering the franchise announced a Beth and Rip Yellowstone spinoff to continue the characters' stories after Yellowstone season 5, part 2. On the other hand, characters like Jamie are universally unlikable, while others land somewhere in the middle. Family members...

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Yellowstone season 5, episode 12, "Counting Coup."Yellowstone season 5, episode 12 may have just foreshadowed the death of Kayce Dutton. Luke Grimes' character was mostly separated from the main conflicts of the Dutton ranch throughout the show's run. In Taylor Sheridan's Neo-Western hit, Kayce's affairs were primarily linked to his own family, Monica and Tate, and his personal woes. That changed, however, in Yellowstone season 5, part 2, after John Dutton III unexpectedly died. While Kayce was initially convinced that his father killed himself, conversations with his sister, Beth, eventually changed his mind about how he died. This sets up his multi-episode final arc in Yellowstone.
Kayce has been silently working on clearing his father's death case for a couple of episodes now. In Yellowstone season 5, part 2, he has reached out to former colleagues and tapped into his connections in Montana to make sure that the truth will come out...

Watching Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" franchise in chronological order takes viewers on a violent journey that begins in the 19th century and escalates into the modern age. The story follows several generations of the Dutton family — from the pioneers who built the Yellowstone ranch to the contemporary cowboys who fight to preserve it — as they deal with the ruthless corporations, politicians, and assassins who want to force modernity on their way of life.
The Duttons are the enemies of progress, and when you've met one of these stubborn rascals, you've met most of them. While there are exceptions, these cowboys and their kin are usually strong-minded, tough, and up for a fight. However, it's quite difficult to keep track of every family member, as the bloodline goes way back and Taylor Sheridan keeps adding to their ranks courtesy of spin-offs like "1883" and "1923" — and there are more on the way.

Yellowstone, the groundbreaking show created by Taylor Sheridan, is airing the second part of its final season in November 2024. After months of delays, the SAG-AFTRA strikes that shut down Hollywood and delayed production, and then parleying over conflicting schedules, actor Kevin Costner (who plays the patriarch John Dutton) exited the show to focus on his four-part Western film Horizon: An American Saga. Costner initially speculated that he might return for the final episodes, but one of the shocking deaths makes it clear that he won't.
As fans watch the Duttons solve a mystery, enact revenge, and battle for their beloved Yellowstone ranch, the show finally comes to an end. One of the big questions, of course, was how the show would handle the departure of Costner. With that question answered, now is a good time to review the series' most shocking deaths. Plenty of Yellowstone characters have already died in surprisingly sad scenes.

The secrecy of Yellowstone season 5B even surprised MCU veterans. It's well-known that Marvel Studios have airtight plans to keep details about their upcoming films from leaking to the public. Even actors and crew who work on the films are often on a need-to-know basis, referencing a so-called sniper if they spoil any detail. Similarly, Yellowstone, created by Taylor Sheridan, also has several plans put in place to keep the second part of Yellowstone season 5 from leaking, including having scripts redacted.
Yellowstone director Christina Voros told The Hollywood Reporter that their level of secrecy has shocked crew members who worked in the Marvel universe. To keep details under wraps, they "went to great, great length" to "protect it for the audience" and "what Taylor and this cast and this family of creators have built over the years." The director revealed that even some of their veterans don't know what will happen in season 5B.

In Yellowstone, Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol) left a complicated legacy, and her death particularly affected her daughter, Beth. The upcoming Yellowstone season 5, part 2 will conclude this chapter of the Duttons' lives, though Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western Yellowstone universe loves to revisit the past. Prequel series like 1883 and 1923 show the trials and tribulations of previous Dutton generations, while the flagship show itself loves a good flashback. These glimpses into the past show how the present Duttons came to be who they are.
This context is particularly important in understanding Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), who is easily the most complex character in Yellowstone. She is whip-smart with an unrivaled business acumen, and her loyalty, particularly to her father John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) is unrivaled. However, Beth is a total loose cannon, prone to childlike, violent temper tantrums, and her erratic behavior has gotten her in trouble many times.

Dave Annable on Making High-Stakes Sacrifices in ‘Lioness’ and His Ride as a Dutton on ‘Yellowstone’
Dave Annable understands the concept well that through some of life’s horrific tragedies come born-again moments that create the strongest bonds between family and friends. This theory has proven true in both his real life and in his Hollywood acting career.
One real-life scenario that tested this theory for Annable happened on Sept. 11, 2001.
“I was there in New York, I was in the city, and I mean…the craziest,” Annable recalls about 9/11. “I went down to volunteer and ended up staying until 2 or 3 a.m., and then obviously they couldn’t use us because there was nothing for us to do, for any volunteers. I didn’t know anybody in Manhattan who I could stay with; none of the phones were working. This one girl I met, we were going to go on our first date that night. So, I ended up walking up to Fordham [in the Bronx], like 60 or 70 blocks.

Who doesn't love a good Western? It seems like just about everyone is into the genre as it's become more popular than ever in recent years. Yellowstone marches on as one of the leading brands built by cowboy-turned-filmmaker Taylor Sheridan, who continues to tell the story of the Dutton family as they fight for their land. Captivating audiences with its rugged landscapes, complex characters, and timeless tales of survival and justice, the series has gone on to become a mega-hit with audiences. But after five seasons on the Paramount Network and multiple marathons surrounding the show, there's bound to be a plot hole or two lurking around the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, and there's one from the very first season that fans have noticed after all this time, involving the death of Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol).

The Yellowstone ranch led by patriarch John Dutton and his cabal of loyal followers has become familiar to lovers of television and Taylor Sheridan. Ever since the writer’s epic vision for Sicario and Hell or High Water captivated the world, there has been no going back to the normalities of life outside the realm of gun-toting go-getters who love to constantly toe the line between good and evil.

Yellowstone has never been kind to the general audience’s senses. It has been boorish at times and straight-up unacceptable at others. Most commonly, however, some of the plotlines have seemed so far out of the realm of possibility that only the label of epic Western could justify the exaggeration of Sheridan’s imagination.
Within this realm lies one such character that neither has much screentime nor dialogue and yet leaves behind a ghastly, sour aftertaste in our collective consciousness.

Actor Dave Annable didn't last very long with his brief role in the hit series Yellowstone, though he did make an ill-fated effort to try and stick around.
Portrayed by Dave Annable, Lee Dutton was the oldest son of John and Evelyn Dutton. The character was shockingly killed off in the very first episode, and his death serves as the catalyst for the events of the show. More recently, Annable teamed back up with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan for the new Paramount+ series Special Ops: Lioness. In a new interview with ComicBook.com, Annable was asked if his major role in Special Ops: Lioness was given to him by Sheridan to make up for killing off Lee Dutton so soon in Yellowstone. The actor then recalled how bummed he was about Lee's death, given how much fun he was having on the set.

There's no denying that Yellowstone's Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) is quite a complicated character. Her viciousness, inability to hold a normal family conversation, and overall vengeful demeanor set her apart as one of the show's most layered and controversial Duttons (which is saying something when you consider most of her kin are pretty devious themselves). But where does Beth's erratic behavior come from? While many assume it stems from her soapy conflicts with Jamie (Wes Bentley), it actually goes back even further than that, all the way to her toxic relationship with her mother, Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol).

Since 2018, actress Kelly Reilly has played the wild character 'Beth Dutton' on the Paramount+ neo-Western drama series "Yellowstone":
"'Bethany Dutton', is the only daughter to ranch owners 'John Dutton' and 'Evelyn Dutton'. Beth holds a professional profile in banking while being fiercely committed to family proving time and time again she is loyal only to the ones she loves.
