David Roach, Singer of Eighties Hard-Rock Band Junkyard, Dead at 59
Image
David Roach, singer and founding member of the late-Eighties hard-rock band Junkyard, died Friday after a battle with cancer. The group announced Roach’s death in a post on social media on Saturday. He was 59.

“After a courageous battle with cancer, David passed away peacefully last night at home, in the loving arms of his wife,” the statement read. “He was a gifted artist, performer, songwriter, and singer — but above all, a devoted father, husband, and brother.”

While a niche band on Los Angeles’ jam-packed Sunset Strip scene of the 1980s,...

‘Poker Face’ Boss on That Finale Shocker, Subverting Charlie’s Lie-Detection and Setting Up a Potential Season 3
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “The End of the Road,” Season 2, Episode 12 of “Poker Face,” now streaming on Peacock.

Every episode leading up to the Season 2 finale of “Poker Face” — Rian Johnson’s murder-of-the-week love letter to “Columbo” — has relied on Charlie Cale’s (Natasha Lyonne) unrivaled ability to sniff out lies to solve any mystery.

But in a surprising turn of events in the latest episode, “The End of the Road,” Charlie finds herself outsmarted at her own game by close friend Alex (Patti Harrison), who has been the Iguana killer all along. Alex managed to bypass Charlie’s detection by training herself to swallow all her natural impulses when lying, subverting the template of the show and what fans have come to expect.

Season 2 showrunner Tony Tost explains that the twist was pitched by co-executive producer Laura Deeley in the writers’ room. “She came in with...

Hear the Rolling Stones Go Zydeco in New Tribute to Clifton Chenier
Image
The Rolling Stones’ reverence for blues and country is as well-established as Keith Richards’ penchant for scarves. But you may not immediately associate the band with zydeco, the French-sung, syncopated folk-dance music of Louisiana. Yet, according to Richards, they’re fans of that genre too. “We never just listened to the blues,” Richards tells Rolling Stone. “Zydeco has been a part of what we always listen to, the Mississippi blues, and it’s not a long way from there to Louisiana. We were always listening to stuff from down there.

Clifton Chenier Was a Music Icon. The Rolling Stones and Lucinda Williams Want You to Know Why
Image
A few months ago, Joel Savoy, the Louisiana Cajun musician and label owner, was at a local pressing plant looking over the cover art for a just-finished tribute album to zydeco legend Clifton Chenier. The record already had a high-end roster — from veterans Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle to relative newcomers Charley Crockett and bluegrass picker Molly Tuttle — all singing and playing songs associated with Chenier, his accordion, and his blues-soaked singing. But then Savoy suddenly had to hit pause: The Rolling Stones had finally submitted their contribution, a year after they agreed to participate.

Travis Roberts Mixes Gin Blossoms Power Pop With Steve Earle Grit on New Song ‘Bellmarie’

Travis Roberts is emphasizing the “alt” in alt-country. On his debut album, Rebel Rose, coming Aug. 1 on New West Records, the Amarillo, Texas, songwriter channels the punk sounds of Jimmy Eat World, the power-pop of Gin Blossoms, and the grit of the album that changed his life, Steve Earle’s Copperhead Road.

Roberts announced his album today with the release of the song “Bellmarie,” a hard-charging slice of country-rock.

“‘Bellmarie’ is a song about an old coworker and a dear friend of mine,” Roberts says. “She’s super into all the ‘stars determine your fate,...

A Neil Young Tribute With a Heart of Gold
Image
Neil Young isn’t just one of the most covered songwriters of all time, he’s also one of the most tributed. There have been several albums of people doing his songs released over the decades, first and most famously the 1989 LP The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young, populated by artists from the then-ascendant alt-rock generation such as Nick Cave, the Flaming Lips, the Pixies, and Dinosaur Jr., fans who were just as admiring of Young’s contrarian swerves as they were of his beloved 1970s chestnuts. ‘The Devil and the Daylong Brothers’ – Southern Gothic Is One of This Year’s Best Movies You Haven’t Seen
Image
The Devil and the Daylong Brothers snuck onto my radar last month. A musical/thriller, it’s likely one you’ve never even heard of, but it’s among the year’s best films.

Writer/director Brandon McCormick, who co-wrote the script with Nicholas Kirk, stages an epic cross-country search for the devil. Three brothers – Enoch (Nican Robinson), Ish (Brendan Bradley), and Abe (Jordon Bolden) – have had their souls ripped from their bodies and sold by their father. They must now track him down, all while passionately confessing their deepest, darkest, and innermost thoughts in song. Along their journey, they come across Frankie, who supposedly knows where their father, Nehemiah (Keith Carradine), might be hiding.

The film opens with the absolute barn-burner “‘Til the Burning’s Through,” set in a neon-soaked bar where the trio of brothers show a violent misogynist a lesson or two. It’s the perfect set-up...

One of the most important American movies of the last decade is leaving Netflix
Image
Toward the end of his life, film critic Roger Ebert saved some of his most lavish praise for a young graduate of Columbia University who devoted his early career to making the kinds of movies not often promoted in the USA. Ramin Bahrani came straight out of the Ken Loach school of progressive storytelling, focusing on the lives and struggles of working-class people, the poor, and the displaced.

If you hurry, you can catch what may be Bahrani’s most crucial movie – 99 Homes – before it leaves Netflix at the end of April.

I don’t know if 99 Homes – released in 2014, a year after Ebert’s death – is Bahrani’s best movie. His three-picture run between 2005 and 2008, which included Man Push Cart, Chop Shop, and Goodbye Solo, is as good an early trio as you will find from an American director in the 21st century.

The first two are...

How ‘Star Wars’ Is Changing Its Tune
Image
What is the definition of “Star Wars music”? Maybe, to paraphrase Jimmy Carter, you just know it when you hear it.

Most people would answer by pointing to the man who invented and canonized this unique subgenre: John Williams, composer of nine Star Wars films from 1977 to 2019, the original themes for two spinoffs and a district of Disneyland. Williams established an orchestral, operatic musical language, rich with tuneful character themes and draped in classical tradition, a style now so deeply familiar and revered that it is, for many fans, holy scripture.

But as this sprawling galaxy continues to expand, the artists behind every new adventure are questioning what the musical topography should — and can — be.

In the most recent Darwinian leap, a trailer for the second season of Andor was soundtracked with the countrified clang of electric guitar in Steve Earle’s Iraq War protest anthem, “The Revolution Starts Now.

New Andor Season 2 Trailer Welcomes You to the Rebellion - Death Star, Krennic, Mon Mothma & More

Andor Season 2's second trailer promises a white-knuckle, high-stakes origin story for the Rebellion.

The first trailer for Andor Season 2 was unorthodox for a Star Wars project due to its emphasis on the show's critical acclaim and all to the surprising refrains of a song from this galaxy, Steve Earle's "The Revolution Starts Now."

Andor's latest trailer sets a dire tone for the series
Image
The final trailer for Andor Season 2 has arrived and hoo boy, does it set the tone for the series.

Where the first Season 2 trailer set an energetic energy as "The Revolution Starts Now" by Steve Earle bellowed against the Star Wars action, this latest trailer is more in line of what people were probably expecting. There is a somber and dire feeling over the entire thing, setting the stage for all the players.

A Klaxon horn sounds throughout this trailer, which is just the best bookend and by far my favorite part of the entire thing. The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story teaser trailer had a blaring Klaxon horn. If we don't get another official trailer for Andor, calling back to the piece of media where Cassian Andor's story began is such a lovely touch. That first Rogue One teaser was so incredibly iconic as it would introduce a...

If Jason Boland sounds as if he’s holding up a mirror to his quarter-century-plus career in The Last Kings of Babylon, it’s because he’s feeling all kinds of introspective these days.

Eddie Vedder Shares Faithful Cover of Neil Young’s ‘Needle and the Damage Done’
Image
Eddie Vedder and Stephen Marley have shared new covers of two Neil Young classics from Harvest for an upcoming tribute album benefitting the Bridge School.

While “Rockin’ in the Free World” has become a Pearl Jam live staple, for his contribution, Vedder covered “The Needle and The Damage Done,” Young’s devastating 1972 song about heroin addiction. The Pearl Jam frontman plays the cover pretty straight (not that that’s a bad thing), with just acoustic guitar accompaniment and a vocal performance that’s distinctly reminiscent of Young’s soft, quivering tenor.

Fiona Apple Guests on The Waterboys’ New Song “Letter from an Unknown Girlfriend”: Stream
Image
The Waterboys have enlisted Fiona Apple to contribute her distinctive, gritty vocals and sweeping piano to their new song, “Letter from an Unknown Girlfriend.” Stream it below.

The track is taken from their upcoming album, Life, Death & Dennis Hopper, and is written from the perspective of a woman calling out her former abuser. “I used to say/ No man would ever strike me,” Apple sings. “And no man ever did/ ‘Til I met you.”

As the album’s liner notes point out, “‘Letter from an Unknown Girlfriend’ could be addressed to a controlling, abusive partner in any decade, any century.”

This isn’t Apple’s first connection to The Waterboys. In 2019, she covered their 1985 song “The Whole of the Moon” for the finale of Showtime’s acclaimed series The Affair.

Life, Death & Dennis Hopper (pre-order here) is set for release on April 4th via Sun Records. “The arc of [Hopper’s] life...

Eddie Vedder Covers Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done”: Stream
Image
A cover of Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done” by Eddie Vedder has been released as the latest single from the upcoming compilation album Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young Volume I, arriving today along with a cover of “Old Man” by Stephen Marley.

Vedder’s take on “The Needle and the Damage Done” conveys the hard-earned wisdom of the 1972 composition, and showcases the Pearl Jam singer’s signature gravelly baritone. It also isn’t the first time he’s sung the song — Pearl Jam first covered it in 1995, and it’s appeared a few times in their setlists since then. In 2009, Vedder dedicated a rendition of it to Michael Jackson, two months after the pop star’s death.

As for Marley’s cover of “Old Man,” it augments the rootsy sound of the original with a easy-flowing reggae vibe, with the pièce de résistance being the warm,...

“Everybody’s just in the best mood and it gets better and better throughout the day,” I overheard a fan say Thursday afternoon at the 2025 Luck Reunion. His observation was spot-on. Star Wars: Andor Season 2 Gets New Sneak Peek Preview
Image
Disney+ released a new "Special Look" for Andor Season 2. The preview offers a more authentic glimpse into the upcoming Star Wars series than the initial trailer, which featured Steve Earle's "The Revolution Starts Now" – a thematically relevant but tonally mismatched protest song.

The second season premieres April 22 on Disney+, continuing the prequel story to Rogue One through four self-contained adventures, each episode spanning a year.

Andor Season 2 Preview Showcases Galaxy-Wide Rebellion Is The Ghorman Massacre Due For Live-Action Depiction?

Tensions are rising in the Andor Season 2 sneak peek, befitting the upcoming episodes acting as the final stop on the road to Rogue One. The new footage spotlights the escalating conflict between the Empire and disparate resistance forces. The separate, uncoordinated resurgence paints a picture of burgeoning opposition that will inevitably evolve into the Rebellion, and the preview's closed captioning may have revealed what event will force the retaliatory cells to combine.

What is the song in the Andor Season 2 trailer?
Image
The Star Wars fanbase is gearing up with anticipation for the second and final season of Andor. The teaser trailer dropped and made the faithful fans excited for the upcoming season.

The editors at Lucasfilm made an interesting choice, opting to go with a rock song in the trailer rather than the traditional music we often see in Star Wars teasers. It was a bold choice that worked and provided a spark for the upcoming season, showing once again how Andor continues to break new ground in Star Wars storytelling.

The song featured throughout the promo is three-time Grammy award winner Steve Earle's "The Revolution Starts Now." The lyrics written to protest America's invasion of Iraq speak of the growing rebellion of the show and how its main character, Cassian Andor, continues his path toward becoming a leader.

The lyrics are not only about rebellion but the choice to take a stand against oppression.

“It’s the choir that makes the show”: Tony Gilroy’s ‘Andor’ Season 2 Remark Has Convinced Me Star Wars Has the Perfect Replacement for Kathleen Kennedy
Image
Tony Gilroy is one of those rare screenwriters who has balanced commercial viability with incredible storytelling, proving that good craft always trumps easy fixes. The filmmaker will be returning to the Star Wars franchise with the second season of Andor. I absolutely loved the first season and the teaser for the second looks incredible.

Gilroy’s return comes at a turbulent time in the franchise as Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kenney is reportedly retiring from the top spot by the end of the year. As the replacement hunt for the controversial president begins, I believe the Andor showrunner would be the perfect fit after seeing his consistency.

Tony Gilroy’s statements about Andor’s season 2 proves he can think beyond the Skywalkers Diego Luna in Andor | Credits: Lucasfilm

Ever since Lucasfilm was sold to Disney, the franchise has moved away from George Lucas’ vision but has not let go of his legacy.

What's the Song in Andor's Season 2 Trailer?
Image
Quick LinksWho Is Steve Earle and What Is 'The Revolution Starts Now?'Why Is 'The Revolution Starts Now' Used In the Andor Trailer? How The Song Ties Andor to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

When AndorSeason 1 premiered, the show was unlike anything fans had seen before. Andor is Star Wars for adults. This doesn't mean it's full of sexy Twi'leks or gory dismemberment with lightsabers or other such TV-ma fare. Rather, the series is an unflinching look at the way in which a rebellion gets underway. These are not the pure, moral heroes fans saw in the Original Trilogy. Cassian Andor, Saw Gerrera and Luthen Rael made their minds a sunless place and share their dreams with ghosts.

Rather than blowing up the Death Star, Andor and company are up close and personal with their enemies. They look in Imperials' eyes before sending them to the Force. This is...

You May Hate Andor Season 2 Trailer’s Music Choice but It Perfectly Ties Into an Uproarious Season 1 Moment
Image
Andor Season 2 trailer is finally here, and it’s safe to assume that fans were stunned the moment they heard that beat drop from the beginning. It’s quite unlike previous Star Wars trailers we’ve seen, and while it’s a breather for some, it’s quite intriguing for the rest.

Diego Luna in Andor / Credits: Lucasfilm

Apart from the show’s critically acclaimed production, Season 1 was lauded for exploring mature themes that led to the Rebel Alliance’s overthrow of the Galactic Empire. Now, why did they use this particular song for the Season 2 trailer?

Andor Season 2 trailer music acknowledges an important scene in the first season

We are used to hearing music scores for Star Wars trailers, but this isn’t quite new to the franchise. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew also utilized a song with lyrics, but Andor has a different take. While we’re seeing images of explosions and rigorous fights,...

Andor Season 2: Which Song Plays in the Trailer? Meet Musician Steve Earle Who Called Donald Trump an Orangutan
Image
Andor season 2 has dropped its trailer and it is far from the generic approach of the other movies or TV series from the Star Wars franchise. Where most of them follow a conventional instrumental track, Andor season 2 has introduced a real-world upbeat song with lyrics. The song “The Revolution Starts Now” created by Steve Earle plays in the background as the trailer continues. The song was released in 2004 by Earle and it raises many questions regarding the use of this particular song in this season of Andor.

Cassian Andor in Andor season 2 | Credit: Disney+

Using this song in the trailer of Andor season 2 makes more sense because the show itself is unique in taste. Instead of choosing a language used in the Star Wars universe, the makers of Andor have presented a real song to navigate the world of the people of the Star Wars Galaxy and their lives under the dominance of the Empire.

‘Andor’ Season 2 Trailer Justifies Its Gigantic Budget but Its Marketing Team Needs to Be Fired for Ruining the Best Star Wars Project

After the unfathomable success of Star Wars: Andor, the show will soon be returning with the second season and we are Sat. Though “Skeleton Crew” was warmly received by much of the fanbase, there hasn’t been an all-out rousing success for the galaxy far, far away franchise on Disney+ since the first season of “Andor” in 2022.

Now the “Andor” Season 2 trailer is here, showing us the most extensive look yet at the new episodes, the first three of which drops April 22 on Disney+.

This writer says “Yippee!” like Anakin Skywalker, because is there ever a lot of goodness here. First and foremost: A ton of connections to 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars” story, which introduced Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor character. There’s Forest Whitaker as partisan leader Saw Gerrera, Ben Mendelsohn as Death Star project mastermind Orson Krennic, and Alan Tudyk’s beloved droid, K-2So.

If this looks a lot like “Rogue One,” it’s because “Andor” Season 2 will use its...

Andor Season 2 trailer is here!
Image
The revolution is here and so is the Andor Season 2 trailer!

As the critical acclaim of Season 1 peppers around the screen as Steve Earle's anti-Iraq war ballad "The Revolution Starts Now" croons in the background, we return to our Ferrix favorites throughout the trailer.

"We're in a war," says Cassian in the opening moments. "You want to fight or you want to win?" Quick shots of Cassian flying in a vessel and shooting Imperial targets on the ground sets up the highly political trailer. This season has been something Tony Gilroy has spouted as being the most important thing he's ever worked on. And yes, it is highly political.

All Star Wars is political. George Lucas and newer writer George Nolfi have said it. If you don't believe that, then you have never been paying attention.

The teaser trailer peeks in on several of the fan favorites from Season 1. Bix Calleen,...

See the Waterboys Take Psychedelic Trip in Video for ‘Hopper’s on Top (Genius)’
Image
As promised, the Waterboys have shared the first single from their upcoming concept album about the life of actor Dennis Hopper, “Hopper’s on Top (Genius).”

Stationed near the midway point of the epic, 25-track Life, Death and Dennis Hopper, the new song captures the film icon at a pivotal moment in his career, when the actor — after a string of bit parts in classics like Cool Hand Luke and True Grit — found himself behind the camera to direct the landmark 1969 counterculture hit Easy Rider.

Keeping with the spirit of that film classic,...

Nickelback’s ‘Live From Nashville’ Guests Talk About Loving Nickelback
Image
When Nickelback’s Get Rollin’ tour hit Nashville last year, the Canadian rock stars went all out — and Nashville gleefully rolled out the red carpet for them in return. Their headlining gig at Bridgestone Arena was full of special guests, many of whom grew up listening to the massive — and frequently divisive — band.

During the show, stars like Daughtry, Hardy, Bailey Zimmerman, Brantley Gilbert, Josh Ross, and Ernest performed a mix of their own hits, Nickelback classics, and covers with the group. The result is featured on Nickelback’s Live From Nashville album,...

Image
Nickelback have announced a new live album, Nickelback: Live in Nashville, arriving November 15th. The opening track “San Quentin” can be streamed now.

The 18-song set was recorded at a sold-out Bridgestone Arena in Nashville during the band’s 2023 “Get Rollin’ Tour.” Numerous guests took the stage that night, including Chris Daughtry for a rendition of “Savin’ Me.”

Other highlights include a cover of Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road” with Brantley Gilbert and Josh Ross, “Rockstar” with Bailey Zimmerman, and “Sold Out” with Hardy. Of course, the band touched on their most well-known tracks such as “How You Remind Me” and “Photograph,” as well.

Miranda Lambert Brings It All Back Home on ‘Postcards From Texas’
Image
You’d have to look pretty far and wide to find anyone in music who has been as consistently good or eternally enjoyable as Miranda Lambert. Almost 20 years into her run, she’s defined her career by always going her own way, both musically and lyrically. Her ninth solo set was recorded in her native Texas with help from peers and longtime collaborators like Brent Cobb, Natalie Hemby, and Jack Ingram, and the album’s co-producer Jon Randall. Postcards From Texas doesn’t have as many genre swerves as Lambert sometimes delivers.
