30 Years Later, Give Clive Barker's 'Lord of Illusions' a Second Chance
Image
Clive Barker has gifted audiences with some of the most disturbing horror stories for over 40 years, both in his many works of fiction and his occasional forays onto screens both big and small. The British horror icon is best known for writing and directing Hellraiser, a screen adaptation of his novella The Hellbound Heart, which spawned a massively successful (though creatively dubious) franchise and a well-received reboot in 2022. Dismayed by poor adaptations of his previous work, Barker opted to direct the film himself, a relatively unprecedented move for a young writer at the time.

While Hellraiser is often in the conversation for best horror films of all time, Barker's two follow-ups as director failed to capture the same kind of attention. His second film, Nightbreed, flopped upon release, but has since come to be considered an underrated cult classic, receiving a director's cut re-release back in 2014. But his third film,...

‘Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: Ami Dolenz, Andrew Robinson, Soleil Moon Frye, J. Trevor Edmond, Hill Harper, Alexander Polinsky, Mark McCracken, Steve Kanaly, Gloria Hendry | Written by Constantine & Ivan Chachornia | Directed by Jeff Burr

Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings was originally released in the UK at a time when I was heavily getting into horror yet was, legally, still too young to rent 18-rated titles from the local video shop (a shop which to this day I credit with the formative years of my movie tastes). It was also at a time when Jeff Burr was being hailed, at least in some corners of the UK and US horror press, as the future of the genre. After all, he had helmed the fan-favourite Vincent Price-starring horror anthology From a Whisper to a Scream and then the very successful sequel The Stepfather 2, before hitting the “big time” as director on the third film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

Return of the Living Dead III first cut with 8 additional minutes has been unearthed (and will be shown at a film festival)
Image
Update: The Popcorn Frights festival in Florida has revealed that there will be a special presentation of the “lost cut” of Return of the Living Dead III at 10pm on August 10th at the Savor Cinema Fort Lauderdale, with director Brian Yuzna in attendance!

The original article follows:

Several years ago, director Brian Yuzna’s Return of the Living Dead III (watch it Here) got a great special edition Blu-ray release as part of the Vestron Video Collector’s Series… but now a discovery has been made that has fans of the film hoping for a new release as soon as possible: a VHS tape of the “first cut” of Return of the Living Dead III, featuring almost 8 minutes of additional, never before seen footage, has been unearthed! That tape is now in the hands of filmmaker Dustin Ferguson, who took to social media to share a picture of the tape,...

Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings (1994) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Kerry Remsen in Pumpkinhead (1988)
A couple months ago, we looked back at the 1988 film Pumpkinhead with an episode of our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series. Now we’re moving on to an examination of the 1994 sequel Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings (watch it Here) – and since this isn’t exactly one of the most popular sequels around, we’re covering it in an episode of our The Black Sheep video series. To find out why we think Pumpkinhead II deserves more appreciation, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by Jeff Burr from a screenplay written by Constantine Chachornia and Ivan Chachornia, Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings has the following synopsis: In a small Kansas town in 1958, a group of teenagers torture and kill a disfigured orphan named Tommy. After 35 years, another gang of teens robs the cabin of an old witch. Using some blood and a spell taken from her house, the...

Best Horror Movies to Watch on Valentine’s Day
Image
With Valentine’s Day arriving next week, we here at Arrow in the Head decided that this was a good time to put together a list of some of the Best Horror Movies to Watch on Valentine’s Day. The movies listed below all deal with love, romance, or infatuation in some way, ranging from stories of love-hungry killers to films with lead characters who are in sweet, wholesome relationships. Check it out, and let us know if you have any suggestions for movies to watch on Valentine’s Day!

The Mummy (1932)

While future entries in Universal’s Mummy franchise would (until the more recent reboots) present the character as a bandage-wrapped monster that likes to strangle people and carry women around, Karl Freund’s 1932 version of The Mummy allowed the legendary Boris Karloff to give more of a performance in the title role. Ditching his bandages after being released from his tomb,...

Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
90s Horror Movies That Don't Get Enough Love
Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
The 1990s were a very special time. We had the Clinton Administration, rolled up jeans, and horror movies. Lots and lots and horror movies. This seems to be the way it's always been. They're cheap to make, the stories don't have to be amazing, and when the plot gets slow, throw in some violence, nudity (or both), and watch the profits roll in. We sure had some great films back then didn't we? Silence of the Lambs, Scream, and Wes Craven's New Nightmare just to name a few. Yet, for as much critical and box office acclaim as these movies garnered, there were many other solid, well deserving horror films that for whatever reason didn't get the love from critics or audiences they should've.

Audiences tastes are subjective. People only have so much time and money with which to see certain films. Yet, there are always those titles that...

‘Return of the Living Dead 3′ Blu-ray Review (Vestron Video)
Stars: Kent McCord, J. Trevor Edmond, Melinda Clarke, Basil Wallace, Sarah Douglas | Written by John Penney | Directed by Brian Yuzna

These days he might be making nonsense like Amphibious Creature of the Deep, but Brian Yuzna’s directorial career began on a high with the excellent body horror satire Society, followed up by a good Re-Animator sequel. Then in 1993 came Return of the Living Dead 3, which, while not matching Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 original, goes some way to righting the wrongs of Part II.

Experiments with “Trioxin” gas began in 1969. The idea was to resurrect the dead and use them as a zombie army. It didn’t go so well, and now the cadavers are locked away in tanks in a temporary government facility. (The facility recalls Day of the Dead’s underground bunker, although it looks rather like a Red Dwarf set at times.)

Colonel John Reynolds (Kent McCord...

Blu-ray Review: Return Of The Living Dead 3 Vestron Video Collector’s Series
Given just how lousy with zombies our current pop culture climate has become over the last decade or so, it’s hard to remember that the walking dead were out of favor as recently as the 1990s. The decade had a few bright spots (Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, aka Braindead is a stone-cold classic, as is Michele Soavi’s Dellamorte Dellamore, aka Cemetery Man), but on the whole there weren’t a lot of memorable zombie movies coming out of the Clinton decade. Well, along comes the new Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray of Brian Yuzna’s Return of the Living Dead 3 to remind us that at least one more terrific zombie movie did come out in the ’90s, but many horror fans slept on it. Hopefully that changes now.

Pretty much a sequel in name only, 1993’s Return of the Living Dead 3 bears almost no...

Scream Factory™ Presents Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings On Blu-ray October 28
Scream Factory’s Blu-ray release of Pumpkinhead, was one of their most impressive releases of the year (so far). That review will be up this evening. In the meantime today Scream Factory announces their release of Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings, to be released on Blu-ray on October 28th. We all knew it was coming, but now we know exactly when, we have the cover art, and we have a list of the bonus content. Liverpool born Clive Barker is a well-known name in fiction, and especially in horror. His novels have sold millions of copies all over the world and many of his stories have been adapted to the screen over the last three decades, one of those films was Lord of Illusions, based on the short story “The Last Illusion” from Barker’s Books of Blood Vol. 6, a compilation of stories from 1985.

Directed by Clive himself, Lord of Illusions is a fantasy horror starring Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap), Kevin J. O’Connor and Famke Janssen (X-Men).
