Film Review: Con Job (2024) by Ian Niles
Ian Niles
Silly comedies have their value. They can be fun, easy to watch, an ideal way to spend a night when you are tired or in no need for context, just entertainment. There is, however, a limit to how silly a comedy can be, since after a point, the film is not fun any more, just a tedious succession of jokes that do not work. Unfortunately, “Con Job” is one of those movies.

Chris and Angus have hatched an elaborate plan to swindle the latter’s estranged brother, Tim, bring him back from Thailand, drug him, and forge his signature to sell their late father’s house to developers. Chris has even arranged for a corrupt notary, who also happens to be his personal trainer, to legitimize the documents, and they have even lied to Tim that Chris is about to get married in order to convince him to come back.

Con Job Review
Ian Niles
Ian Niles returns with Con Job, a darkly comedic sequel to his debut, Lie Hard. This time, Niles takes on the triple threat role of writer, director, and lead actor as he delivers a chaotic yet mildly-entertaining romp.

The story follows Chris (Niles), a self-absorbed schemer, and his dimwitted best friend, Angus (Menuhin Hart). Their plan to con Chris’s estranged brother, Tim (Dean Edwards), takes a wild and and surreal turn when a dead body, a bumbling petty criminal, and a well-meaning neighbour complicate matters.

Niles’ direction is a masterclass in physical comedy and slapstick humour, reminiscent of his previous work. The chemistry between Niles and Hart is undeniable, their dynamic is often reminiscent of classic buddy comedies like Dumb and Dumber.

Elsewhere, the supporting cast, which includes Aaron Berg as a manic notary and Julia Claire Schweitzer as a scheming food delivery driver, delivers memorable performances that elevate the film’s comedic moments.

Con Job (2024) Movie Review: A Downright Unengaging Crime Comedy Devoid of Flavour and Charm
Ian Niles
The film industry is no stranger to comedies that delve into serious and even heinous crimes. A dash of wild humor can often provide a unique way to navigate through seemingly insurmountable situations, laying the groundwork for what we know as dark comedy. Indeed, a sequence of unfortunate events has long been a staple for eliciting laughter. With this in mind, one might expect Ian Niles, in his third directorial endeavor, “Con Job,” to bring a novel or at least a digestible twist to the crime-comedy genre. Yet, disappointingly, the lack of innovation in the formula is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the multitude of problems plaguing his latest film. The whimsicality of “Con Job” can be thought of as both its best friend and the worst adversary.

The movie begins with a peculiar gathering. Chris, who is financially struggling, is friends with brothers Tim and Angus,...

Wtf: Joseph Fiennes Cast as Michael Jackson in Half-Hour Road Trip Comedy
With the current boycott of the Oscars due to its lack of racial diversity in nominees, it's just a dumb idea to cast white actor Joseph Fiennes to play black musician Michael Jackson; even if it's for comedy. While Jackson has been played by white actors Fred Armisen and Amy Poehler on SNL in the past, due to a combination of vitiligo and cosmetic surgeries and skin procedures to make Jackson look more like Peter Pan, even after those procedures he was still black and was been played black actors Tim Meadows, Chris Rock, and Dean Edwards on SNL; so it's entirely possible and appropriate to still have a black actor play Jackson.

What makes this project even weirder is that it's about a reported road trip taken by Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marlon Brando shortly after 9/11 from New York to Ohio; the visual of all three of them in one car is bizarre.

Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg + Stefon Showed Up For Seth Meyers’s Last SNL
Melissa McCarthy hosted Saturday Night Live last night for the third time with musical guest Imagine Dragons, but the popular comedienne’s performance was overshadowed by the fact that it was Seth Meyers‘s last show. Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen and Stefon (aka Bill Hader) all showed up in support of the long-time Saturday Night Live cast member and gave him a heartfelt send off.

Seth Meyers has been a part of the Saturday Night Live family for 12 years (Darrell Hammond is the only cast member who’s been on the show longer than that). He joined the cast as a featured player alongside Amy Poehler, Dean Edwards and Jeff Richards. While the latter two never found stardom on SNL, Meyers and Poehler became a kind of team. The duo worked together on sketches such as Spy Glass, Little Sleuths and the Needlers (aka the couple that should...

'Star Trek' promo wins Golden Trailer
The trailer for "Star Trek" was named best in show and also took home the Summer 2009 Blockbuster Award at the 10th annual Golden Trailer Awards, which were held Thursday night at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles.

At the awards ceremony -- hosted by Dean Edwards and founded and co-produced by sisters Evelyn Brady Watters and Monica Brady -- statuettes were handed out in 16 categories as well as best in show.

The best voiceover category was renamed the Don Lafontaine Award for Best Voice Over to honor Lafontaine, who lent his voice to numerous trailers before his death last year. That award went to "Tropic Thunder -- Hollywood Legend," narrated by Corey Burton.

While 16 awards were handed out at the event, winners were named in 61 categories, including foreign films, posters, TV spots and film festival materials. Lionsgate was the company with the most wins this year, taking nine Golden Trailer Awards.
