Paris-based Apc (About Premium Content) has acquired world sales rights on the six-part Finnish thriller “A Good Family,” currently filming in Estonia before moving back to Finland.
The high-end drama about love, marriage and parenthood is based on Finnish author and screenwriter Petri Karra’s 2019 novel “The Dark Light” (“Musta Valo”). The creative team takes in creator/producer Minna Virtanen, creator/writer Antti Pesonen and helmer Pete Riski, behind the crime show “Bullets,” which won the MIPDrama Buyers’ Coup de Coeur award in 2018 and launched on Walter Presents in the U.K. in January.

Estonia is the latest country to select its entry for the International Feature Film category of the Oscars with the Nordic Western “The Last Ones,” directed by Veiko Õunpuu, flying the flag for the Baltic country.
The film will world premiere as part of the Baltic Competition program of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, which runs Nov. 13-29.
An expert committee called together by the Estonian Film Institute chose the film. The committee consisted of film director Tanel Toom, producers Evelin Penttilä and Ivo Felt, film journalist Tõnu Karjatse, costume designer Eugen Tamberg, former distributor and current advisor on audio-visual matters to the Minister of Culture, Siim Rohtla, and the Estonian Film Institute’s Edith Sepp.
“The Last Ones” takes place in the wild tundra of Lapland. Young miner Rupi is hollowing out the tundra in the hope of putting together enough money to leave the mining village behind forever.

Marvel Studios may be showing no sign of giving Black Widow her own film, but this fan-made title sequence taps into our spy movie dreams.
Christopher Haley made the James Bond-inspired graphics for his After Effects class final project (via The Mary Sue).
His take on the film sees Scarlett Johansson joined by Rosamund Pike as Yelena Belova (aka the other Black Widow) and Samuli Edelmann as 'Russian Captain America' Red Guardian, as well as Agents of Shield's Ming-Na Wen and Clark Gregg.
His synopsis reads as follows:
"Cut off one head, two more shall take its place... For this speculative title sequence of a Black Widow film I decided Black Widow's villain would be... Black Widow. Yelena Belova, to be specific.

Ambi Pictures acquires English-language remake rights to Princess.
Ambi Pictures Group has acquired the English-language remake rights to Arto Halonen’s Finnish feature Princess, based on the true story of cabaret dancer Anna Lappalainen.
Ambi’s Andrea Iervolino and Lady Monika Bacardi are financing and producing the remake with an eye toward aligning with A-list female talent for the picture.
Sales arm Ambi Distribution is handling worldwide sales.
Ambi’s president of worldwide sales and acquisitions, Julie Sultan, brought the project to Ambi and will develop and produce with Iervolino and Bacardi.

The latest film of Mika Kaurismäki, the Brazil-based older brother of "Le Havre" director Aki, takes the filmmaker back to his home country of Finland. As generic as its title, "Road North" is a road-trip movie in which an adult son, Timo (Samuli Edelmann), gets to hang out with his unknown and oversized father, Leo (Vesa-Matti Loiri), and — surprise! — the unlikely duo find that they share more than they initially expected. Timo is a finicky concert pianist and his boozing, smoking and stealing old man seems to be his complete opposite, though several comedic setpieces (including a musical one, one of the film’s highlights) reveal they are cut out from pretty much the same cloth. Idiosyncratic in a rather more generic manner than one usually gets from either of the Kaurismäki brothers, "North" at least boasts some nice camerawork as the duo move into the direction of Lapland. I like this trailer much better than the first two movie trailers for this film but they give away a little too much at the beginning.

Banksy, the British artist and provocateur was invited to storyboard and direct the opening credits of an episode of "The Simpsons" that aired on Sunday night. The result proved to be one of the single darkest and most daring sequences the show has ever done. You can watch said credits on Youtube.
"Robert Rodriguez says that "Sin City 2" will come immediately after he finishes directing "Spy Kids 4" which is still in pre-production. There's a catch though - "Frank Miller and I are working on it. It's slated to be the next one, but if the script is not ready, then we'll have to move to the next one" says Rodriguez.

PARK CITY -- There is something about boats that bring out the worst in people, at least filmmakers seem to think so. "Cargo" uses a rundown transport ship as a claustrophobic hothouse for all sorts of twisted behavior. An atmospheric feature debut for Brit documentary veteran Clive Gordon, the film is effectively creepy but low on logic. After the festival circuit, it might find rough seas theatrically.
Inspired by a newspaper item about how cargo ships were throwing stowaways overboard rather than risk the legal penalties when discovered in European ports, "Cargo" details what happens to the human spirit when it's locked up and allowed to fester.
The hero of the film is ostensibly Chris (Daniel Bruhl), a young German traveler who gets into trouble in an African port town, loses his passport and stows away on a cargo headed for Marseilles. From the start, though, he is such a hothead he steals a bracelet in a street market and punches a cop that he is hard to root for.
Although he is more or less accepted into the motley crew of the Gull and taken under wing by the ship's taciturn Capt. Brookes (Peter Mullan), Chris continues to act recklessly. It seems he's not the only stowaway on board; a handful of Africans are hiding in the bowels of the boat. When crew members start mysteriously disappearing with only their boots left behind, the crew hunts down the interlopers and tosses them overboard.
Except one: a young woman named Subira (Nikki Amuka Bird), whom Chris befriends and brings food to even as she is pursued by the crew. But inside this game of cat and mouse is a penetrating character study. When Chris asks Brookes if there are any normal people on the ship, he answers, "just you."
There's the bearded and tortured cook Baptist (Luis Tosar), who has witnessed terrible things and done nothing about them; Herman (Gary Lewis), who climbs up the crow's nest naked, cackling like a bird; Rhombus (Samuli Edelmann), a blond, belligerent psychopath. And holding all these misfits in check is the brooding Capt. Brookes.
A man of few words, Brookes shares a terrible memory with his crew, which binds them together in a kind of secret society of cruelty. He is not a bad man, but one who has been bent out of shape by horrific events he should have but didn't control.
In a way the real main character is the ship itself, an old and rusting cargo boat salvaged by the film. Production designer Jordi Yrla has done a first-rate job dressing the sets, especially the ship's galley and cargo bay, to give them an ominous quality. Cinematographer Sean Bobbitt uses desaturated colors and documentary techniques to suggest the close quarters of the ship.
While other tech credits, including music by Stephen Warbeck, are accomplished and add to the feeling of authenticity, the film is ultimately betrayed by the storytelling. Gordon and writer Paul Laverty have not created a clear leading character and given the audience someone to care about. And Brookes big secret is too murky, as are some of the major plot points. In the end, as great as the film looks, it all leaves you a bit cold.

Slacker life in Finland is depicted in that country's "Me and Morrison", an ultimately disappointing rendering of aimless young adults. Director Lenka Hellstedt's drama opens on the incredibly self-centered Milla (Irina Bjorklund, a Swedish-born up-and-comer), who is drifting through life and jobs and sponging off friends. When she meets Aki (Samuli Edelmann), a Jim Morrison fan, in a bar, their one-night stand evolves into boozy romance, a lot of pot smoking and, soon, cohabitation.
Aki is a single parent. His young son, Joonas (Roope Karisto), has long ago learned to ignore the endless drugs and sex that float through their small house. This odd threesome becomes an ersatz family -- that is, if Aki's increasing drug use doesn't destroy all their lives.
Actors are fine, camerawork is largely hand-held, and editing is eye-catching -- too much so, in fact. If only the screenplay by Marko Leino, based on Kata Kakkainen's novel, had traded some of its zest for youthful narcissism for a bit more character motivation.
