5 fantasy and sci-fi shows that aren't watched nearly enough
Image
There are some shows that don't get nearly enough love or attention. In many cases, it feels like shows that fall into the science fiction and fantasty categories struggle the most. Whether because of the niche or the topics covered, these shows can sometimes go overlooked.

As a fan of these two genres (often conflated under one umbrella), it can be disappointing when a show you love doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves. And while that feels like something we see often in this genre, there are some shows that truly don't (or didn't) get the love they should have.

While there are so many shows that could make this list, I am sticking with five shows that I think need more viewers. In some cases, I truly believe that if more people gave these shows the attention they deserved, we might still be getting brand new episodes.

Jesse Metcalfe Dreams of Being an Artist in 'The Comic Shop' Trailer
Image
"I think each person needs to follow their own unique path. Otherwise, you'll just be wondering 'what if?'" Quiver has debuted the trailer for an indie dramedy film titled The Comic Shop, directed by Jonathan L. Bowen. This feel-good film is being released direct-to-vod in April this spring. It's the story of a guy who runs a comic book shop but who actually dreams of having his own real job as a comic book artist. There's a couple of scenes set at the San Diego Comic-Con, as well as in the little comic shop he owns in Vegas. Mike D'Angelo, a former comic book artist turned owner of a struggling shop located in a strip mall in Las Vegas, faces a tough reality after the pandemic hits. Forced to reinvent his business & also part ways with his best friend, Alex, Mike thinks his creative dreams are over. But when they meet Brandon,...

Fantasy Series With 91% Rt Score Gets New Streaming Home After Leaving Netflix
Image
A fantasy series, with 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, is getting a new streaming home after leaving Netflix. Although it has managed to successfully launch several genres, particularly old-school thrillers like The Night Agent and supernatural teen fare such as Stranger Things and Wednesday, there's an argument to be made that the most global streaming platform has struggled to find a fantasy tentpole on the level of HBO's House of the Dragon or Prime Video's Wheel of Time.

The Witcher has had notable success, although not without its share of turmoil. Series lead Henry Cavill has exited the project, with his role as Geralt of Rivia to be played by Liam Hemsworth in The Witcher season 4. It also hasn't been a franchise starter, with spinoffs failing to gain much traction so far. Shadow and Bone has faired even worse, getting cancelled much to the frustration of its audience. It's an important genre...

‘Frasier’s Season Two Trailer Continues Trend of Ignoring the Original Freddy
Image
Because time is a flat circle and Kelsey Grammer has alimony payments to make, we’re getting yet another season of Frasier. While the Paramount+ reboot doesn’t come back until September, a trailer for Season Two just dropped, giving fans a peek at the return of Roz, Bulldog, Gil and a bunch of other characters who frustratingly aren’t named “Niles.”

But — and I fully acknowledge that this is clearly at the bottom of the list of things to get upset about in the world right now — the trailer ends with an exchange that feels completely out-of-step with the larger continuity of the show.

When we see Frasier return to his old studio at Kacl in Seattle, he introduces Bulldog to Freddy, and Freddy tells the host (who somehow hasn’t been canceled in the past two decades): “I used to listen to your show all the time as a kid.

It Took 5 Episodes for the New ‘Frasier’ to Shake the Original, but It Became So Much More
Image
The 1993 “Frasier” pilot and the first episode of the 2023 Paramount+ revival have a lot in common. With the respective titles “The Good Son” and “The Good Father,” both episodes follow Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane as he moves to a new city, makes a massive career change, and moves in with a family member with whom he has a chilly relationship. Television legend James Burrows even returned to direct the first episode of the reboot, providing another link to the show’s storied past.

Thr premise of Frasier Crane moving back to Boston to live with his son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott), who rebelled against his Ivy League upbringing to become a fireman, might seem like a lazy attempt to rehash the original premise. You’ve seen White-Collar Son Lives with Blue-Collar Father; now get ready for Blue-Collar Son Lives with White-Collar Father!

‘Frasier’ Reboot Cast and Character Guide: Who’s New and Who’s Back?
Image
From “Cheers” to “Frasier,” Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane was a mainstay of comedy TV for 20 years, from the ’80s to the early-aughts. Now, after an equal amount of time off the air, Grammer is back in the role for Paramount+’s “Frasier.”

The streaming series is a revival-meets-reboot that once again spins off Grammer’s character with a new cast of colorful characters. Some original “Frasier” stars will return to guest star. However, David Hyde Pierce won’t return as Niles and John Mahoney, who played their father Martin, passed away in 2018.

That means Frasier – along with “Frasier” fans – will be surrounded by new faces. With that in mind, here’s a handy guide to the new “Frasier” cast and characters, including where you might have the actors before.

Freddy Crane's Recasting Continues A Cheers & Frasier Tradition Stretching Back Over 30 Years
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Frasier reboot.

The Frasier reboot brings back a tradition of recasting Freddy Crane, as seen in Cheers and the original show. The new chapter in Frasier's life focuses on repairing his relationship with his son, inspired by his own experience with his father. The actor cast as Freddy in the Frasier reboot must bring the character to life and hold his own against Kelsey Grammer's phenomenal performance.

The Frasier reboot upholds a Freddy Crane recasting tradition that started in Cheers and continued in the original show. Paramount+'s endeavor to bring back Kelsey Grammer's iconic character revolves around Frasier Crane starting his fourth act in Boston. A big part of this new chapter in his life is devoted to fixing his fractured relationship with his son, which is inspired by his own experience mending his bond with Martin Crane in Seattle.

Frasier Revival Review
Image
It's been nearly 20 years since Frasier went off the air, but the sitcom's new Paramount+ revival picks up as if no time has passed. That's not to say that things haven't progressed for the characters, but the new Frasier feels exactly like a sitcom from 2004, aside from the slightly longer episode running times for a streaming service. In an era of more artistically ambitious, less joke-oriented TV comedies, Frasier feels decidedly out of place. The dedication to an old-school format also gives it a certain retro charm, though, and anyone who misses the days of multi-camera sitcoms taped in front of a live studio audience should find Frasier refreshing.

Frasier follows in the footsteps of another revival of a beloved 1990s sitcom, ABC's Roseanne continuation The Conners, in capturing the essence of the original series while moving the story forward. Unlike The Conners, Frasier only features one character from the series' original run,...

Why Did Frasier's Reboot Recast Freddy Crane For The 3rd Time?
Image
In the Frasier reboot, Freddy, Frasier's grown-up son, will be at the center of the story, with their strained relationship as the emotional backbone. Despite previously having a close and amicable relationship, Frasier and Freddy now have conflict in the reboot, which surprises long-time fans. The role of Freddy has been recast multiple times throughout the Cheers and Frasier series, with Jack Cutmore-Scott being the latest actor to take on the role.

The Frasier reboot recasts Freddy for a third time, and there's a good reason why. When Kelsey Grammer returns as Frasier Crane in the Paramount+ reboot, he has one clear goal — to fix his tense relationship with his grown-up son. Frasier and Lilith's only child has appeared in both Cheers and the original Frasier, but mostly as a secondary character. In the Frasier reboot, however, he will be at the center of its storytelling, with his relationship...

The Stoner Christmas ‘Frasier’ Episode Shows Why More Series Should Get Weird at the End
Image
It’s Frasier Week at IndieWire. Grab some tossed salad and scrambled eggs, settle into your coziest easy chair, and join us. We’re listening.

Ask a few diehard “Frasier” fans to name the strangest moment from the show’s 11 season run and you’ll get a few different answers. Some will point to the infamous “Goth Freddie” scenes, in which Frasier’s bookish son shows up looking like a seat filler at a Nine Inch Nails concert. Others will single out the time Frasier stars in a TV commercial that sees his voice imposed on a talking version of Eddie in a nightmarish foreshadowing of TikTok A.I. And of course, someone will mention a stoned Martin Crane explaining that he put his trousers in the refrigerator because he had an idea for “Fridge Pants.” All three are perfectly defensible choices — and they all come from the same infamous episode.

The 18 Best Episodes of ‘Frasier’
Image
It’s Frasier Week at IndieWire. Grab some tossed salad and scrambled eggs, settle into your coziest easy chair, and join us. We’re listening.

Hey baby, do you hear the blues a-calling? We do! It’s been 30 years, but we still can’t get enough of “Frasier.” Luckily for us, there’s more “Frasier” on the horizon! Not many could have predicted that a “Cheers” spinoff about a lovably pompous psychiatrist unable to take his own advice would have been such a success, but it works, and more than that, it’s magic.

Part of the sitcom’s charm is that Frasier, as played by Kelsey Grammer, is routinely fallible. He’s pretentious, nitpicky, and status-obsessed, so we love to see him fall on his face. What’s unique about Frasier is that it’s never because of the fact he’s smart that he gets tripped up. It’s his pretention,...

Frasier Review: A Return That's Neither Disappointing Nor Remarkable
Image
"Y'all know how this goes" is how the revived version of "Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs" now begins. Kelsey Grammer, his voice a little lower with age, then kicks into a new version of the jazzy closing theme song to "Frasier," and it feels like a sign of the entire show as much as anything else. Anyone with even a passing familiarity with the 11-season NBC spinoff that aired from 1993 to 2004, or of Dr. Frasier Crane as a character, will have a general sense of how the reboot goes. Airing on Paramount+, the new "Frasier" mostly avoids bringing back too many returning characters, but in doing so, it highlights two sides of the reboot coin. When you reboot an iconic show, you not only have the chance to keep telling a beloved story, but you inadvertently have the chance to emphasize to viewers what really worked about the original. Kelsey...

‘Frasier’ Revival Is an Unfunny, Uninspired Dud
Image
There’s a joke in the fourth episode of the Paramount+ revival of Frasier that is not the worst to be found in this new take on Kelsey Grammer’s famous psychiatrist Frasier Crane, because there are unfortunately a lot of bad ones to choose from. But it typifies the biggest problem the new show has.

Frasier has joined his new Harvard colleagues Alan (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and Olivia (Toks Olagundoye) for a night of bar trivia, competing against a team of firefighters led by Frasier’s son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott). At one point,...

‘Frasier’ Review: Paramount+ Reboot Serves Kelsey Grammer Without the Farce or Charm
Image
“30 years ago, I left Boston with my tail between my legs. I had dreams of returning, triumphant. Now, those dreams just keep slipping farther and farther away.”

Paramount+’s “Frasier” reboot is psychiatrist Frasier Crane’s (Kelsey Grammer) latest reinvention. He first reinvented himself when he left Boston for his hometown of Seattle (spinning off from “Cheers” to his own original series). Then he did it again when he left Seattle for Chicago to be with the woman he loved, in the series finale of “Frasier.” 19 years after the original series ended, Frasier Crane is reinventing himself once again. This time, back in Boston, with a new career in academics and a new role as a present father to his (now adult) son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).

If your question regarding a “Frasier” revival isn’t simply “Why?” then it’s surely “Why now?” The late 2010s saw the floodgates open...

Frasier Posters & Trailer Tease the Paramount+ Revival of the Beloved Sitcom

Same Frasier. New challenges. Dr. Frasier Crane returns to Boston with new relationships and old dreams to fulfill in the Frasier revival. Frasier's son, Freddy, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott, takes over from Trevor Einhorn, and the new series explores their relationship. The Frasier revival pays tribute to the late John Mahoney and his character, Martin, with Freddy carrying some of Martin's traits.

Kelsey Grammer takes center stage as Frasier Crane in a pair of new posters for the upcoming revival series. Coming courtesy of Paramount+, the latest adventures of Frasier will find the delightfully pompous psychiatrist moving back to Boston to be close to his now estranged son Freddy, played by Deception star Jack Cutmore-Scott. The Frasier Reboot's Freddy Story Makes Up For 1 Missing Character
Image
The Frasier reboot introduces a new dynamic between Frasier and his son Freddy, flipping the premise of the original show. There is friction between Freddy and Frasier in the reboot, setting up a similar dynamic to the original series between Frasier and his father Martin. Without Niles in the reboot, Frasier's relationship with his son becomes the closest to his relationship with Niles, providing the show with a classic dynamic.

The trailer for the Frasier reboot has teased a dynamic between the titular psychiatrist and his son Freddy that will make up for a missing character from the original series. Frasier’s revival series brings the character back to Cheers’ Boston setting for a third act. Dr. Crane has returned to academia with an old friend from college, and his new group of friends includes his son Freddy. Frasier's Reboot Makes An Insulting Accusation Canon After 20 Years
Image
Frasier's reboot explores his strained relationship with his son Freddy, reflecting the same dynamic he had with his own father. The original show's limited portrayal of Freddy raised accusations that Frasier was a bad father. Frasier's dismissal of his father's interests and behavior in the reboot highlights his own transformation into his father, leading to a potential reunion with Freddy through lessons learned.

In 2023, Frasier will return to TV screens, and while Kelsey Grammer's upcoming Frasier Crane reboot should be a celebration of the character, it may make fans confront some uncomfortable truths about him. As confirmed by the first Frasier reboot trailer, TV's most famous radiotherapist has uprooted his life in Seattle to head back to Boston, where he lived during the Cheers timeline, reconnecting with his adult son Freddy in the process. But things aren't all tossed salads and scrambled eggs for the pair.

Freddy was a minor part of the original,...

Frasier Reboot Debunks A 30-Year-Old Theory About The Crane Brothers' Origin
Image
The Frasier reboot challenges the theory that Frasier and Niles' differences were due to their upbringing, as Freddy's normalcy refutes this idea. Freddy's choice to drop out of college and become a firefighter suggests that Frasier's pretentious behavior was always a matter of choice. The revelation that Frasier not have been as authentic as he thought changes his and Niles' origin story, confirming suspicions that Frasier was a stick in the mud by choice.

In 2023, Frasier's reboot is set to answer several questions about the original, but arguably the most compelling revelation comes in the shape of a debunked theory on Frasier and Niles' origin story. Frasier's reboot cast might not include the majority of the original stars, but his family do return, in the shape of son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) and his nephew (Anders Keith) as the revival flips Frasier's premise of a father and son overcoming significant differences to live closely.

Frasier Revival Synopsis Teases the Fate of the Cheers Bar, Reveals New Details
Image
Paramount's upcoming Frasier reboot unveils an updated synopsis with fresh details about the series, including a hint that the famed Cheers bar had its proverbial last call some time ago.

Per Entertainment Weekly, the Cheers bar located in Boston is "no longer," suggesting the famous backdrop for the titular series doesn't exist anymore. The apparent non-existence of the bar will be disappointing news for Cheers fans anticipating Frasier revival, which returns to Boston as the titular psychiatrist goes home for a much-needed restart after spending the original series in Seattle. Instead, the revival cast will be frequenting a new tavern called Mahoney's, which is named after late Frasier star John Mahoney, who featured as Frasier's father Martin during the original show. Director James Burrows joked he wanted to name the tavern after Frasier's parent show, saying, "I preferred 'Cheers,' but they didn't want that for some reason."

Why Frasier Moved To Seattle
Image
The following article contains discussions of attempted suicide.

In the time between the flagship series Cheers and its spin-off Frasier, the eponymous Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) made the decision to move from Boston to Seattle. The pilot episode of Frasier, “The Good Son,” doesn’t begin with Frasier leaving Boston behind for his new city; the series opens with Frasier already settled into his new life in Seattle with a new apartment and a new career as a radio psychiatrist. He’s no longer hanging out with Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelley Long) at a bar; he’s hanging out with his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and his producer Roz (Peri Gilpin) in a coffee shop.

The status quo is shifted when Frasier’s estranged dad, Martin (John Mahoney), moves in with him. But the status quo already changed long before that, because Frasier left his home...

Lilith Returns to ‘Frasier:’ Bebe Neuwirth to Guest Star in Revival Series
Image
Many of “Frasier’s” all-time greatest episodes feature guest appearances by Bebe Neuwirth as Lilith Sternin, the icy-cold ex-wife of Kelsey Grammer’s title character. And the crew behind the the upcoming Paramount+ revival of the beloved sitcom clearly knows it, because Neuwirth is reprising her role for a guest spot in the new series, IndieWire has confirmed.

It’s been that way ever since the revival of the hit Seattle-set sitcom was announced, intensifying as it became clear that no one, bar Kelsey Grammer, would be returning. Instead, the Frasier reboot, expected to premiere on Paramount Plus later this year, will drop Grammer’s finicky psychiatrist into a different milieu, alongside a completely new cast. As far as gambles go, it’s a big, potentially legacy-tarnishing one, which many people have already dismissed out of hand. There’s one question almost nobody seems to be asking: what if they actually pull it off?

Over the past week, the first casting news has surfaced, and it hasn’t exactly assuaged the doubters. The first actor to be announced was Only Fools and...

Frasier Revival Casts Jack Cutmore-Scott As Frasier's Son Freddy Crane
Image
After years of speculation and exploratory meetings, a sequel series to the acclaimed sitcom "Frasier" is finally in the works. The project, starring Kelsey Grammer in a reprisal of his Emmy-winning role, was officially given the green light by Paramount+ in fall 2022. At that time, it was revealed that Chris Harris of "How I Met Your Mother" and Joe Cristalli of "Life In Pieces" would be writing and executive producing the show, but there were no concrete details about the plot or the characters. Now, as production begins to ramp up, we finally know the first two cast members joining the esteemed psychiatrist on his new adventure.

According to Variety, Jack Cutmore-Scott will play Frederick Gaylord Crane, the son of Bebe Neuwirth's Dr. Lilith Sternin and Dr. Frasier Crane. Previously played by Christopher and Kevin Graves (and Rob Neukirch in a future sequence) on "Cheers," then Luke Tarsitano and Trevor Einhorn on "Frasier,...

Frasier Reboot Recasts Character's Son Ahead Of Filming
Image
The upcoming reboot of Frasier has officially recast an older version of Frasier's son Freddy. The original series, which was a spinoff of the iconic sitcom Cheers, ran for 11 seasons and a total of 264 episodes between 1993 and 2004. It followed Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer), a psychiatrist and radio call-in show host whose high-class style of living clashes with his blue-collar father Martin (the late John Mahoney), who moves in with him due to an injury on the job as a police detective in Seattle. Frasier's son Freddy is a recurring character on both Cheers and Frasier, played at different ages by Christopher and Kevin Graves, Luke Tarsitano, and Trevor Einhorn, making occasional appearances when visiting his father from Boston.

Per IndieWire, Freddy has now been recast a fourth time for the upcoming Frasier revival season. The character will now be played by Jack Cutmore-Scott, an English actor who is in his mid-30s,...

Trevor Einhorn Not Returning to ‘Frasier’ as Frederick: Here’s Who Was Cast Instead
Image
Freddy, my boy, will now have a new face on “Frasier.”

The beloved Emmy-winning NBC sitcom landed a revival at Paramount+, headed up by lead star Kelsey Grammer. However, while much of the original cast will not be part of the reboot, Deadline confirmed that some characters will be recast. Frasier Crane’s (Grammer) son Frederick will no longer be played by Trevor Einhorn, but instead portrayed by Jack Cutmore-Scott.

Cutmore-Scott as Freddy will also have a very different trajectory for Frasier’s son, blending traits from both his father Frasier and grandfather Martin (the late John Mahoney). His mother Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) will not be a part of the series as of print.

The official character description for the adult Freddy reads: Charming and handsome, Frasier’s son Freddy is a nuanced combination of his father and grandfather. Years ago, Freddy rejected following in his father’s footsteps—dropping...

Frasier Revival Recasts Key Character

One Frasier character will look a bit different when he returns for the upcoming Paramount+ revival: Jack Cutmore-Scott (Deception) has been cast to play Frasier’s son Freddy, our sister site Variety reports.

‘Frasier’ Sequel Series at Paramount+ Casts Jack Cutmore-Scott as Freddy Crane
Image
Jack Cutmore-Scott has been cast in the “Frasier” sequel series at Paramount+, Variety has learned.

Plot details are being kept mostly under wraps for the series, but the official logline states, “Frasier is off to a different city with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge, and an old dream or two to finally fulfill. Frasier has re-entered the building!”

Cutmore-Scott will play Freddy Crane, Frasier’s son. The character is described as “a nuanced combination of his father and grandfather. Years ago, Freddy rejected following in his father’s footsteps—dropping out of college to become a fireman—and he’s never looked back until now, when recent troubles have left him with no one to turn to in his life. If they can overcome past differences, Freddy and Frasier might finally have a chance to repair old wounds.”

In the original series, Freddy was briefly played by...

‘The Magicians’ to End After Season 5 on Syfy
Stella Maeve, Summer Bishil, Hale Appleman, Olivia Taylor Dudley, and Arjun Gupta in The Magicians (2015)
And for its final trick, “The Magicians” is bidding farewell.

Syfy has announced that the current fifth season of the fantasy show will be its last. Season 5, which is scheduled to last 13 episodes, premiered in Jan. 2020, meaning that the series finale will air on April 1.

Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. The series first premiered on Syfy in January 2016, and has been one of its most consistent shows over the last four years.

News of the show’s end means that the NBCUniversal-owned cabler’s scripted roster has been whittled down to only a couple of returning series. However, Syfy is gearing up to premiere several new offerings in the near future, and recently ordered a pair of shows including one inspired...
