Dave Boyle's Netflix series “House of Ninjas” is a show that balances action-packed spectacle with witty, humorous fun while diving nose-deep into the underground reality of shinobi from the point of view of a dysfunctional family. Audiences may know him best for his film “Man from Reno,” starring Ayako Fujitani. For his newest developed project, director Boyle brings the secretive world of shinobi operations to modern Japan through a script based on a story by Kento Kaku, Yoshiaki Murao, and Takafumi Imai, with additional directorial support from Murao and Tomoyuki Takimoto. With production helmed at Toho, the martial arts TV series boasts an all-star cast and features impressive work led by action/stunt director Keiya Tabuchi, known for his involvement in the live-action “Attack on Titan” movies, “Shin Ultraman,” and “Shin Kamen Rider.”

One of the coolest and most beloved sub-genres for thriller, action, and drama fans is the spy genre and there’s a good reason. In a spy film or series, we get complicated and cool characters who put their lives on the line by going against numerous people and instead of always letting their guns talk they use more covert tactics, which are always thrilling to watch. So, Netflix being what it is, it has a large library of content and also some of the best spy shows you can find and that’s what inspired us to compile a list of the best spy shows you can watch on Netflix right now.

Long ago in feudal Japan, ninjas (or shinobi) were masterful mercenaries hired by warlords to lead dangerous espionage missions to catch the baddies. But now it’s 2024, and ninjas… don’t really exist — except in House of Ninjas, the new spy thriller from writer-director Dave Boyle (Man from Reno) starring Kento Kaku, Yosuke Eguchi, and Tae Kimura. The series imagines a world in which ninja clans are alive and well — except they’re (mostly) retired. So when an evil clan threatens Japan, a family of former ninjas covertly comes out of retirement to foil the plot… and kick ass and take names.

A Netflix Japanese thriller, House of Ninjas is a gripping story revolving around the last of the Shinobi families, the Tawaras. The Tawara patriarch, Souichi Tawara, decided to leave their original identity as ninjas behind and lead a normal life, but the reemergence of their rival clan, the Fumas, became a reason for the Tawaras to change their decision. To protect their country from an evil entity like the Fuma leader, Yosuke, the Tawaras took up their responsibility as Shinobis and fought against their enemies. Let’s talk about this cast of interesting characters in the series and learn about their journey.

“Only ignorant fools say ‘ninja.’” So claims Taki, the mysterious matron of the Tawara family, as she sternly corrects her grandson in the old ways. Played by veteran actress Nobuko Miyamoto, there’s much more to Grandma Taki than meets the eye. Such is the way of the world in Netflix’s new series, House of Ninjas. The proper term is “shinobi.” It’s what was used historically.
House of Ninjas is a new action dramedy that follows a modern-day shinobi family who has forsaken the lethal trade of their ancestors for a “normal” life. And like in every dramedy, the Tawaras are comically and tragically dysfunctional. The family patriarch, Soichi (Yosuke Eguchi) struggles to maintain a low-key profile whilst his wife Yoko (Tae Kimura) and daughter Nagi (Aju Makita) succumb to their old devious habits, stealing stuff just for the rush. Their thievery goes from grocery store shoplifting to museum art object theft.

Netflix has greenlit a Japanese drama series about the last ninjas to remain in modern times.
Man From Reno director Dave Boyle is behind House of Ninjas, which will air in 2024 and is based on a story by Kento Kaku, Yoshiaki Murao and Takafumi Imai.
The series will tell the story of the Tawara family, the last ninja family that abandoned its roots after an incident took place, who must take on the greatest crisis in Japanese history, threatening to shake the nation to its core.
Ninjas have been an area of fascination over the centuries and, as shown in the program, the legendary Japanese heroes of the shadows remain active today.
Boyle, who also wrote and directed Big Dreams, Little Tokyo, White on Rice and Surrogate Valentine and tends to utilize primarily Asian or Asian-American casts, will pen with Masahiro Yamaura, Kota Oura and Kanna Kimura.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
African Cats – Samuel L. Jackson (Narration)
Deep Gold – Bebe Pham, Jaymee Ong, Michael Gleissner
Madea’s Big Happy Family – Tyler Perry, Loretta Devine, Bow Wow
Water for Elephants – Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz
Movie of the Week
Water for Elephants
The Stars: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz
The Plot: A veterinary student (Pattinson) abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet.
The Buzz: This period piece looks to be a well put together romantic drama. I enjoyed Pattinson’s general vibe in the trailer; thankfully a far cry from his brooding ham-bake of the Twilight films. Witherspoon is winsome, I typically love her in her more dramatic pieces — aside from the laborious Vanity Fair. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of on-screen magic this pair can conjure up. Happy to see Christolph Waltz again,...

Five years ago, acclaimed Japanese fashion photographer and music video director Kazuaki Kiriyamade an explosive and groundbreaking assault on the movie world with his directorial debut feature, the visually stunning and hugely ambitious sci-fi epic, ‘Casshern’. Now, Kiriya returns in his own inimitable style with the equally spectacular period, fantasy action-adventure, Goemon.
Produced by Kiriya and legendary producer Takashige Ichise (The Ring; Dark Water; The Grudge; Shutter) and boasting a star-studded cast that includes Yosuke Eguchi (Shaolin Girl), Takao Osawa (Ichi; Sky High), Jun Kaname (Blood; K-20; Casshern), Tetsuji Tamayama (Norwegian Wood; Casshern) and Susumu Terajima (Casshern; Ichi The Killer), Goemon is based on the exploits of the film’s eponymous, ninja bandit hero – the Japanese folklore equivalent of Robin Hood.
The year is 1582 and the ruler of Japan, Oda Nobunaga, has been brutally murdered leaving the country in a state of political chaos. Meanwhile, a chivalrous thief known as Goemon,...

The official website for Permanent Nobara has been updated with a new 2-minute trailer. The film is the latest by director Daihachi Yoshida, who began his career as a highly successful television commercial and music video director before making his feature-length debut with 2007’s Funuke Show Some Love, You Losers!
His new film is based on a manga series by Rieko Saibara, a cartoonist who’s popularity has been soaring recently due to the frank nature of her work, covering self-reflective subjects like single motherhood (Ikechan to Boku) and her own manga career (Onnanoko Monogatari).
Former J-pop idol Miho Kanno stars as a woman named Naoko who returns to her village home with her daughter after getting divorced. Her mother runs the only hair salon in the area for women to get perms, but the main reason they show up day after day is to discuss their most personal love...

Here is the last trailer for Goemon, and while I'm excited with the of course breathtaking visuals, I'm hoping the storyline is better then Casshern.
In 1582 Oda Nobunaga was on the verge of conquering all of Japan, but was forced to commit suicide at Honno-ji Temple by one of his generals, Akechi Mitsuhide. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Nobunaga’s top general, overthrew Akechi a few days later and completed Nobunaga’s dream of unifying Japan under one ruler. The world was at peace for a time, but soon a ninja bandit named Ishikawa Goemon (Yosuke Eguchi) appeared, using his super-human abilities to steal from the rich and give to the poor—a habit which cemented his reputation as a hero to commoners everywhere. One night while looting treasure from Nanban (Southern Barbarians), Goemon finds a mysterious box hidden inside a secret grave. A forgotten relic from the past containing untold powers, it...

Taiwan film seeing resurgence
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Still think Taiwan cinema is all about dark, existential auteur pieces with stationary camera and almost no dialogue as embodied by Hou Hsiao-hsien, Tsai Ming-liang and Edward Yang? Think again. After years of industry and public debate, many of Taiwan's new production companies and directors are diving into commercial filmmaking to resuscitate Taiwan's comatose film industry. CMC Entertainment, a new film giant formed a year ago in Taiwan, is making big splashes. CMC is co-financing director John Woo's highly anticipated historic drama Battle of Red Cliff, starring Chow Yun-Fat, Tony Leung and Taiwan supermodel Lin Chi-ling. Also in preproduction is Blood Brothers, Woo's first gangster film since his return to Asia. The project stars Taiwan superstar Shu Qi, Chang Chen and Hong Kong star Daniel Wu. CMC's first film, Silk, a supernatural horror film in the vein of Columbia Asia's 2002 horror blockbuster Double Vision, is due for release in October. The film, starring Taiwan superstar Barbie Hsu, Japanese superstar Yosuke Eguchi and Taiwan star Chang Chen, boasts a megabudget (for a domestic film) of $192 million Taiwan ($6 million).
