HollyShorts Film Festival is betting big on international expansion, with plans to launch in Dubai this December as the Oscar-qualifying short film showcase looks to establish footholds beyond its Hollywood home base.

The fest, which has spent two decades building cachet in the competitive short film space, will stage its first Middle Eastern edition Dec. 12-14, giving regional filmmakers a direct pipeline to Academy Awards consideration. HollyShorts holds Oscar-qualifying status across four categories, making it a coveted platform for emerging talent.

Co-founder Theo Dumont has enlisted industry veteran Jeff Pryor as strategic advisor for the Dubai launch. Pryor brings serious global event chops from his tenure as executive VP of corporate communications at MGM Studios, where he orchestrated James Bond premieres worldwide. More recently, as president of Priority PR, he’s executed splashy campaigns across multiple territories, including a buzzy Cannes “speed boat brunch” that reintroduced Miramax to the market.

John Cena and Idris Elba are not the most likely pairing one would expect, but the two are in a movie together this year. The latter is a versatile actor whose work spans both award-nominated works and blockbuster titles. Elba has been nominated for seven Emmys, including for the series Luther, The Big C, and Hijack.

On the film side of things, Elba is known for his stirring role in Beasts of No Nation. More recently, his roles have included voicing Knuckles in the Knuckles spinoff TV show as well as the mainline Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie.

Toronto International Film Festival doesn’t only recognize feature films.

On Thursday, TIFF announced the lineup for its television section, the Primetime program, meant to recognize episodic and serialized storytelling. This included 10 different series, six of which will host their world premieres at TIFF. This year’s 50-year celebration of TIFF also marks the 10th anniversary of its Primetime program, which departs from the festival’s film-heavy lineup.

One of the six series to have its world premiere in TIFF Primetime will be “The Lowdown.” The Tulsa-set series for FX stars Ethan Hunt, who also serves as an executive producer. “The Lowdown” was created by Sterlin Harjo (a fellow EP alongside Hawke), who was a co-creator for “Reservation Dogs,” also for FX.

Netflix's biggest action movie franchise is set to make a big comeback, according to its leading star, Chris Hemsworth. Action movies are great, but action movies made by stunt performers are on a whole other level. That's what Netflix brought to the proverbial table in 2020 with Extraction. Starring Hemsworth as mercenary Tyler Rake, the film was ball-to-the-wall action, including a gigantic one-take sequence, and plenty of John Wick-inspired action. Amazon MGM Studios' last two action movies that went straight-to-streaming have both become huge successes on Prime Video. Heads of State, in particular, has managed to do the unthinkable and become the fourth most-watched Amazon MGM movie of all time on the streamer.

According to Deadline, Heads of State has attracted more than 75 million viewers worldwide on Prime Video since its debut on the streaming service on July 2. This makes the Idris Elba and John Cena-led action comedy the fourth most-watched Amazon MGM Studios’ film of all time on Prime Video.Heads of State ranks behind The Tomorrow War (No. 3), The Accountant 2 (No. 2), and the Dwayne Johnson-Chris Evans Christmas action title, Red One, which remains Prime Video’s most-watched Amazon MGM Studios feature title of all time.

The pic ranks behind the Dwayne Johnson-Chris Evans Christmas action title Red One from Jake Kasdan, which is Prime Video’s most watched Amazon MGM feature title of all time. While an extended month number was never made public, Red One clocked 50M Prime Video viewers in its first four days; it also received a theatrical release, grossing $186M worldwide.

The second most-watched Amazon MGM movie on Prime is the Ben Affleck-Jon Bernthal The Accountant 2 with 80M worldwide viewers over its first 28 days. That Gavin O’Connor-directed action dramedy also went to the big screen and grossed $103.2M at the global box office.

It's not news that "Cats" is a bad movie. Directed by Tom Hooper, the movie uses Andrew Lloyd Webber's inscrutable and mostly plotless Broadway musical as its source material, and to say it's jarring, bizarre, and outright terrible is an understatement. Also, Taylor Swift is in it.

War Of The Worlds Is Conquering Streaming

2025's War of the Worlds has become a streaming hit during its debut week. The new Prime Video original movie, which stars Ice Cube, Eva Longoria, Iman Benson, Andrea Savage, Devon Bostick, and Clark Gregg, is an adaptation of the iconic 1898 sci-fi novel of the same name by H. G. Wells.

Pierce Brosnan will always be known for his work as James Bond, but just a few years after he suited up as 007 for the final time, he led a star-studded thriller that’s finally coming back to streaming. The movie is currently among Prime Video’s worldwide top 10 this week, per FlixPatrol. Me Before You was an adaptation of Jojo Moyes’ bestselling novel. During its release, the film became a shocking blockbuster and earned over $208 million worldwide on a modest $20 million budget, while outperforming larger titles like X-Men: Apocalypse.

The heartbreaking romance features Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Lou, a caregiver hired for Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), who becomes paralyzed after a tragic accident. The story unfolds when Will decides to end his life through assisted suicide; meanwhile, Lou tries hard to change his mind. With time, the two grow closer romantically, and Lou struggles to accept Will’s brave decision.
