This originally opened in Denmark last fall, and arrives on VOD in the US this March. The film follows three longtime girlfriends from elementary school who are coming into their prime and finding a new lease on life after participating in a cooking course in Italy. Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights to the uplifting Danish drama “The Food Club” from Scandinavian sales and aggregation banner LevelK.

Although it has yet to have an international premiere, “The Food Club” has been acquired for more than 30 territories. Besides selling to Samuel Goldwyn Films for North America, the movie was picked up by SquareOne for all rights in Germany, as well as German-language remake rights; The Reset Collective for Australia and New Zealand; Ads Service for Hungary; Big Tree Entertainment for India; Yes Dbs for Israel; T&l for South Korea; and Mirror Audiovisual for Spain.

International sales outfit LevelK has acquired the uplifting female-led Danish drama “The Food Club,” directed by Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg (“One-Two-Three Now!”).

LevelK will be handling world sales rights to “The Food Club” outside of the Nordics. Set in the lush countryside, “The Food Club” is headlined by three well-known Scandinavian actresses, Kirsten Olesen (“The Bridge”), Stina Ekblad (“Wallander”) and Kirsten Lehfeldt (“Men & Chicken”).

The film revolves around three longtime girlfriends from elementary school who are coming into their prime and are finding a new lease on life after participating in a cooking course in Italy.

Marie (Olesen) is abandoned by her husband on Christmas Eve, leading her identity as part of a happy family to crumble; while Berling (Ekblad) is the eternal bachelor who lives the sweet life but has a complicated relationship with her daughter; and Vanja (Lehfeldt) lives with the memories of her late husband and has difficulty moving on.

Other winners at Swedish film awards include The Yard, Martha & Niki and My Aunt In Sarajevo.

Johannes Nyholm’s The Giant (pictured) was the big winner at the 2017 Guldbagge Awards in Sweden.

Produced by Garagefilm International and Beo Film, it won best film, best screenplay (for Nyholm) and best make-up (Eva von Bahr, Love Larson and Pia Aleborg).

The Yard also won three awards, including best actor (Anders Mossling), best cinematography (Ita Zbroniec-Zajt) and best sound/sound design (Patrik Strömdahl).

Goran Kapetanović won best director for the unusual My Aunt In Sarajevo, which had a theatrical release despite being only 58 minutes long. The film’s Sadžida Šetić also won best actress in a supporting role.

Maria Sundbom picked up best actress for The Girl, The Mother And The Demons, while Michael Nyqvist won best supporting actor for his role in A Serious Game.

The film has now been sold to Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Polyband Medien GmbH), France (Ab Groupe), China (Hgc Entertainment), Turkey/Cyprus (Ozen Film), Latin America (California Filmes) and Bulgaria (Pro Films Ood).

Previous announced deals include Middle East (Gulf Film), Russia/Cis, (Daro Film Distribution), Estonia (EstinFilm), Former Yugoslavia (Cinemania Group), Thailand (Sahamongkolfilm International Co. Ltd.), Malaysia, Brunei and Vietnam (Rain Film).

The Shamer’s Daughter, based on the first book in Lene Kaaberbøl’s bestselling series The Shamer Chronicles, is to be adapted as a feature film.

TrustNordisk will kick off presales on the fantasy-adventure film at the European Film Market (Efm) at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 6-16).

The screenplay will be written by Oscar-winner Anders Thomas Jensen, who wrote the script for Academy Award winner In a Better World.

The feature will be directed Danish filmmaker Kenneth Kainz (Pure Hearts).
