The writers of the HBO comedy Insecure, Issa Rae and Syreeta Singleton, have announced that they’ve been developing a remake of F. Gary Gray’s heist film Set It Off back in 2019. Little news has been revealed since then and both have gone on to other projects. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Driver, Jeremy Strong, and Anne Hathaway are set to star in Paper Tiger, a crime drama written and directed by Gray. Paper Tiger will center around "two brothers who get wrapped up in a scheme that is not quite what it seems. Their bond is tested as they get embroiled in a world of violence and corruption, finding themselves in the crosshairs of the Russian Mafiya. Gray worked with Strong and Hathaway in his most recent film, Armageddon Time, a coming-of-age film also starring Anthony Hopkins. Production on the film is expected to begin in 2025. There is no official release date for Paper Tiger at this time.

NewFest and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Bam) have announced the fourth annual lineup for their “Queering the Canon” retrospective film series, this year subtitled “Besties.”

This year’s lineup of films screening at Bam in downtown Brooklyn (April 11 – 15) includes a 4K restoration of Rose Troche’s lesbian classic “Go Fish,” the world premiere of the 4K restoration of Brian Sloan’s queer romantic comedy “I Think I Do,” 35mm screenings of Gus Van Sant’s “My Own Private Idaho” and F. Gary Gray’s “Set It Off.” The “Go Fish” screening will be accompanied by a Q&a with Rose Troche in person along with star Guinevere Turner.

Anna Kendrick’s Darby Carter found her person, Grant (Kingsley Ben-Adir), at the end of “Love Life” Season 1. And in the teaser for the second season of the HBO Max anthology series, the wedding gown-wearing Darby literally steps out of focus while celebrating her just-married status at a bar with her friends, and the show’s next protagonist enters the frame: Marcus Watkins, played by “The Good Place” alum William Jackson Harper.

Per HBO Max, the second season of “Love Life” focuses on Marcus as he comes out of a years-long relationship with the woman he thought was going to be his person. After the rug is pulled out from under him, he is plunged back into the search for the romantic fulfillment he thought he’d already found.

HBO Max on Tuesday released a new teaser trailer for Love Life, which sees Anna Kendrick‘s Season 1 protagonist cross paths with Season 2 protagonist Marcus Watkins, played by new series lead/executive producer William Jackson Harper (The Good Place). The clip shows Darby take a break from dancing to down a tequila shot. As she returns to her friends, a seemingly perturbed Marcus approaches the bar and orders himself a whiskey.

It’s been a while since I wrote about someone who had actual Oscar buzz, right? We can argue how Anna Magnani and Kimberly Elise should have contended in their years, but Cathy Tyson’s cryptic and involving turn in Mona Lisa definitely appears to have landed in the sixth spot of the 1986 Supporting Actress lineup. Tyson won Lafca (tying with Dianne Wiest for Hannah and Her Sisters) and was first runner-up with New York. She scored Globe and BAFTA nominations, as well, before missing out with Oscar. Given the strength of her performance, the degree of precursor attention she received, the way her role fits in well-worn paths for ingenue recognition, and the ... um... quality of some of the actual nominees, I’m surprised Tyson didn’t make the cut.

Love Life is getting ready for its second season on HBO Max, and the streaming service has now announced the cast for the romantic comedy series. Punkie Johnson, Leslie Bibb, John Earl Jelks, Arian Moayed, Kimberly Elise, Ego Nwodim, and Blair Underwood will appear in the second season which will follow a man (William Jackson Harper) when he starts a new search for love after a years-long relationship ends.

Saturday Night Live featured player Punkie Johnson is set to star in the upcoming sophomore season of HBO Max’s Love Life opposite Jessica Williams, Chris “Comedian Cp” Powell and William Jackson Harper.

Also boarding the anthology series’ Season 2 are Leslie Bibb (Jupiter’s Legacy), John Earl Jelks (True Detective) and Arian Moayed (Succession), who will take on recurring roles.

Exclusive: Diandra Lyle, who heavily recurred on Season 1 of Secrets of Sulphur Springs, has been promoted to series regular for the second season of Disney Channel’s time-travel mystery-adventure series. Production on season two will begin next month in Louisiana.
