Super 8 (2011) Movie Ending Explained: Is the Alien a Monster?
Image
When J.J. Abrams wrote and directed this film, Steven Spielberg saw an opportunity he couldn’t refuse. “Super 8” is a modern-day re-telling of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) without the tale of friendship between the boy and his alien friend. Set almost 30 years apart, both films have their own problems to deal with. The modern-day “E.T. home phone” would’ve not worked had it not been for the complexity of the retelling. The film is era and politics-appropriate.

Even though the film is based around the late 1970s, the Soviet threat always loomed large for the USA. The biggest imagined opposition that the USA always had was the Soviets. This trend did not die down with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Part of being a democratic process or slight transgressions towards autocratic democracy, there’s always the need for the threat of an invisible enemy. This political anxiety...

This Star-Studded Brad Pitt Movie Was Based On A Controversial Memoir
Image
"This is a true story about friendship that runs deeper than blood." These words open Barry Levinson's "Sleepers," the 1996 legal crime drama that revolves around juvenile delinquents who end up serving sentences longer than nine months. As anticipated by the film's opening lines, the story revolves around four friends who grow up in a rough neighbourhood that is overseen by two morally opposing figures — parish priest Father Bobby (Robert De Niro) and local gangster King Benny (Vittorio Gassman). While the kids often run small errands for King Benny from time to time, one unfortunate accident during the summer of 1967 completely alters the trajectory of their lives.

After stealing a hot-dog cart, the kids play around with it, and it accidentally rolls down a set of stairs and crushes a man. The four kids are sentenced to serve time at a juvenile detention center, where they're subjected to unimaginable horrors,...

The Two Perfect Jennifer Jason Leigh Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Jennifer Jason Leigh came from a showbiz family. Her father was Vic Morrow, a prolific film and TV actor who starred in the series "Combat!" Her mother was Barbara Turner who acted in many TV shows throughout the '50s and '60s, and who wrote the screenplays for "Petulia," "Cujo," "Georgia," and "Pollock." Leigh started attending acting workshops when she was still a teenager, studying with Lee Strasberg. At age 16, she started to land her first professional acting gigs, appearing in an episode of "Baretta," and in the film "The Young Runaways." In 1981, she caught the public's eye playing a young woman battling anorexia in the TV movie "The Best Little Girl in the World," but it wasn't until her role in 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" that the world took proper notice.

After that, Leigh was an actress to look out for. Her intense performances always lend...

This 22-Year-Old Thriller Starring Colin Farrell And Kiefer Sutherland Took Place In One Location And Happened In Real Time
Image
The 2002 thriller Phone Booth is one of Colin Farrell's most underrated movies. Farrell plays New York publicist Stu Shepard, who finds himself trapped in a phone booth, on the phone with a stranger who forces him to disclose his secrets while watching with a gun from a nearby building. Farrell's portrayal of the desperate Stu is central to the success of Phone Booth, which received a 72% positive Rotten Tomatoes rating and critical praise for its unusual filming style: taking place in one location, Phone Booth was filmed in real-time.

Filming in real-time means that the movie's events take place over the time that it takes to watch it. As it is not a commonly used format, movies that take place in real-time must be both creative and effective. Phone Booth is a relatively short movie, lasting under 90 minutes, and this timeframe and format would be challenging enough for a director to build suspense,...

Super 8 (2011) Revisited: J.J. Abrams’ throwback to the Amblin glory days
Image
Released by a train crash, a mysterious creature rampages through a small Ohio town. The military is on its trail, the local authorities are overwhelmed, and a group of local kids… who planned to spend their summer making a zombie movie… take it upon themselves to figure out what’s going on. That’s the set-up for director J.J. Abrams’ 2011 film Super 8 (watch it Here) – and it’s time for it to be Revisited.

Like many aspiring filmmakers, J.J. Abrams started making movies at a young age, casting his friends and shooting on Super 8 film. As a teenager, he was able to participate in a young filmmakers’ festival in Los Angeles. Newspaper coverage of that festival caught the attention of one of Abrams’ heroes, another director who had gotten started making Super 8 movies when he was young: Steven Spielberg. Although Abrams and Spielberg didn’t meet at that time,...

What Happened To Pilot Mike Durant After Events Of Black Hawk Down
Image
Pilot Mike Durant was captured and held hostage for 11 days by Somali troops during the Black Hawk Down incident. The Black Hawk Down movie accurately depicts Durant's capture and the events leading up to it, including the death of his friend and fellow pilot Wolcott. Despite his injuries and being told he would never fly again, Durant continued his career as a pilot, retired with over 3,700 flight hours, and went on to have a successful post-military life as an author, CEO, and politician.

Mike Durant is a real-life military pilot and a key figure in the movie Black Hawk Down. Ridley Scott's 2002 war movie tells the harrowing story of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, which was a two-day fight between American forces and the Somali National Alliance (Sna). The initial purpose behind the mission was to apprehend the top lieutenant of Sna leader, Mohammed Farah Aidid. However, the simple...

September 29th Genre Releases Include Cruel Jaws (Blu-ray/DVD), Pandemonium (Blu-ray), Ghost Ship (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray), The Caller (Blu-ray)
Image
After last week’s offbeat slate of home media releases, things are back on track this Tuesday, with a wildly eclectic assortment of titles headed home just in time for the Halloween season. If somehow you haven’t been adding any of the Blumhouse movies to your home collections over the years, you can now play catch-up rather easily with their Blumhouse of Horrors: 10-Movie Collection. Vinegar Syndrome is once again doing the dark lord’s work with their releases of Pandemonium and The Caller, and Severin Films is showing some love to both Cruel Jaws and Massacre in Dinosaur Valley, too.

Scream Factory has put together a brand new collector’s edition Blu-ray for Ghost Ship that arrives this week, and if you’re someone who digs on “banana pants” cinematic experiences, you’ll definitely want to pick up Agfa’s Blu-ray for Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things.

First Trailer for Superpower Sci-Fi 'Higher Power' Starring Ron Eldard
"Well, what if I told you I had a plan? It's the only thing powerful enough to stop what's coming." Magnet Releasing has debuted the first official trailer for a very weird, global-scale indie sci-fi film of sorts titled Higher Power, about a gamma ray that gives a human on Earth some crazy impressive superpowers. This is very hard to describe, you just have to dive into the footage. The official description is fairly vague as well, only explaining that "when the Universe decides what it wants, it's pointless to resist." You'll get a sense of this in the trailer. Starring Ron Eldard as Joe Steadman, who reminds me a lot of a young Jeff Daniels in Dumb & Dumber. The cast includes Jade Tailor, Austin Stowell, Jordan Hinson, Colm Feore, Tom Wright, and Laura Margolis. This actually looks pretty cool, and a bit weird. It's worth a watch, for sure.

Looking back at Drop Dead Fred
Mark Harrison Aug 15, 2016

We revisit Drop Dead Fred, starring the late, great Rik Mayall...

Hey, snotfaces, what do you get when you mix Mary Poppins and Beetlejuice? Look no further than 1991's Drop Dead Fred, a fantasy comedy about an imaginary friend, which turns out to be about a woman's mental breakdown after years and years of emotional abuse.

If you're of a certain age and, much like Phoebe Cates' protagonist Elizabeth at the beginning of the movie, you haven't seen Fred since you were a child, you may remember it as a childhood staple that you were probably a bit young to be watching and for many, it might have been your introduction to Mayall's comic stylings. However, also like Lizzie, Fred's anarchic behaviour has different implications when you meet him again in adulthood.

He first re-emerges after Lizzie has lost the three major totems of adulthood - her marriage,...

The Fear Monger: Friday The 13th May Bring Back This Iconic Character
Good day, horror fans. The scariest thing about this week might just be the complete lack of big horror releases in theaters. Arguably the biggest debut is Gregory Levasseur.s Egypt-set supernatural horror The Pyramid, but it wasn.t even given that wide of a berth. (It isn.t playing where I live, which may or may not be inside of a haunted pyramid.) There.s also Erik Skjoldbjærg.s Norwegian thriller Pioneer, but that.s got an even smaller release window. On the VOD front, December 5th saw the release of the thriller Poker Night, which stars Ron Perlman, Titus Welliver, Giancarlo Esposito and Ron Eldard. (Go watch The Babadook if you haven.t yet.) In smaller news, Uwe Boll has taken to Indiegogo to try and fund the presumably violent sequel Rampage 3: No Mercy. (Why?) The highly anticipated sci-fi thriller Z for Zachariah, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and...

Poker Night Review
As an avid Texas Hold’em player, I’ve honed my ability to read statuesque poker faces concealing the slightest tell (a subconscious sign revealing your rival’s hand). Sure, developing such a sleuthy skill has helped build a nice bankroll for my casino trips, but I’ve also carried this talent over into my film criticism as well. Just because a movie isn’t human doesn’t mean there aren’t tells scattered about the script and screen, as filmmakers unintentionally show their hand long before the cards are flipped. Foreshadowing, heavy-handed-dialogue, condemning red herrings – it’s not that hard to spot a tell.

Squaring off against Greg Francis’ Poker Night, I didn’t expect to face an opponent with Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu’s swagger. Establishing itself as a criminal thriller, we meet a police officer named Jeter (Beau Mirchoff) the night he’s abducted by a masked...

Ashton Kutcher in Jobs (2013)
‘Jobs’ Over ‘Blue Jasmine’ Any Day or Night
Ashton Kutcher in Jobs (2013)
Ashton Kutcher is terrific in “Jobs,” but the true stars are the geeks who look like angelic children from another planet: Josh Gad (Steve Wozniack), Lukas Haas, Ron Eldard, Nelson Franklin, Eddie Hassell. They are not famous, but they represent the creative mind at work and at play. They are the intellectual pool from which Steve Jobs got his ideas. And creativity is what this film, directed by Josh Stern and written masterfully by Matt Whiteley, is about. The creative process and how suits can destroy a living creative force like Apple Computer. Watching Steve Jobs (Ashton Kutcher) direct and manage.

Ashton Kutcher in Jobs (2013)
'Jobs' - a job incomplete (Ians Movie Review)
Ashton Kutcher in Jobs (2013)
Film: "Jobs"; Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, Matthew Modine, J.K. Simmons, Lesley Ann Warren, Ron Eldard, Ahna O'Reilly, Victor Rasuk and John Getz; Director: Joshua Michael Stern; Rating: **1/2

Steven Jobs, the late CEO and co-founder of Apple, was a fascinating man. His personal and professional life had elements intriguing and enchanting, thus making his story inspirational and motivating.

The film "Jobs" attempts to demystify this genius starting from the myth and working its way back, showing the hard work and heartbreak that he endured. The narration begins in 2001, with a frail and lanky Jobs moving with an awkward gait on the podium. He delivers a straight-faced speech and with diffused.

Film Review: Ashton Kutcher Portrays the Ethereal Hero in ‘Jobs’
Chicago – The revolution in technology, that has allowed the world to change completely in just two generations, was led in part by dreamers in a garage. One of those “Edisons” was Steve Jobs – the creator of Apple Computers – portrayed with an inventor’s instinct by Ashton Kutcher.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Kutcher, and the approach that director Joshua Michael Stern and writer Matt Whiteley took with the character of Steve Jobs, are the highlights of the film. There is great respect toward the passion in the dreamers and innovations, and that type of creativity that changes our way of doing and thinking. Where the film doesn’t score points is within the “inside baseball” elements of the Apple Computer corporation. There is too much time given to boardrooms, marketing managers and staffing decisions, and while this is intriguing, it isn’t as interesting as the reflective vision that Steve Jobs gave his products.

Ashton Kutcher in Jobs (2013)
Jobs Movie Review
Ashton Kutcher in Jobs (2013)
Title: Jobs Director: Joshua Michael Stern Starring: Ashton Kutcher, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, J.K. Simmons, Matthew Modine, Ron Eldard, Lesley Ann Warren, Ahna O’Reilly, John Getz, Victor Rasuk, James Woods, Amanda Crew, Brad William Henke, Brett Gelman, Kevin Dunn If the background extras staring on in worshipful awe and/or cowed silence didn’t clue one in on Steve Jobs’ anointed brilliance in director Joshua Michael Stern’s film about the influential Apple founder, then cinematographer Russell Carpenter’s reverential framing or, especially, John Debney’s cloying, heavy-handed score surely achieve the same effect. A biopic whose overly literal and demonstrative telling is at frequent odds with a slightly more full-bodied screenplay, “Jobs,” [ Read More ]

Opening this weekend is director Joshua Michael Stern's Jobs. Interview: Actor Josh Gad, Director Joshua Michael Stern Get ‘Jobs’
Chicago – The new film about the founder of Apple Computers, “Jobs,” is a tour de force for Ashton Kutcher, in his portrayal of Steve Jobs. Opposite to him is familiar character actor Josh Gad, as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Creating the ethereal atmosphere in the film is director Joshua Michael Stern.

Josh Gad and Joshua Michael Stern were recently in Chicago on a promotional tour for their new film, and provided insight to capturing the essence of what made those two “Steves” tick. Josh Gad has been a journeyman actor, cast in five TV series over the years (like “1600 Penn”), character film parts (“The Internship”) and in his most high profile, originating the character of Elder Arnold Cunningham on opening night of the Broadway smash “The Book of Mormon.” Joshua Michael Stern made his directorial debut with “Neverwas” (2005), and followed that up with “Swing Vote” (2008).

The Two Steves: Ashton Kutcher...

Open Road Films has released four clips from the upcoming biopic, Jobs. Alien Invasion Month: ‘Super 8′
Super 8

Written and Directed by J.J. Abrams

2011, USA

So I know it’s Alien Invasion Month and that the key requirements of Sound on Sight’s ongoing theme are quite simple: a) aliens and b) invading. I also know that apart from the U.S. military’s invasion of small town Ohio, there’s not a whole lot of that second part in J.J. Abrams’ Super 8, least of all from its star extraterrestrial, a recently escaped interplanetary alien-spider-gorilla who’s been exacting revenge on the government that studied him by abducting townsfolk and household appliances to rebuild his ship constructed from white, morphing Rubiks cubes. It’s all very technical, if you must know.

Super 8 begins, in prototypical Spielbergian fashion, with a broken home. Joe (Joel Courtney) sits on a snow-covered swingset, clutching in one hand the locket of his mother, all while his father and the...

Ashton Kutcher Tries in the First Trailer for Jobs
Here is the first trailer for the Steve Jobs biopic, Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher. He will play the Apple founder in what looks like a very safe by-the-numbers movie. It reminded me a lot of the movie Flash of Genius with Greg Kinnear playing Robert Kearns who takes on the Detroit automakers who he claims stole his idea for the intermittent windshield wiper. Note: Dermot Mulroney starred in that movie as well as Jobs, he’s like the go to biopic sidekick. That was a good movie, but like Jobs would likely play out better on TV instead – because it’s just not that interesting.

The trailer likes to make out that Jobs was “The Original Innovator”, “The Original Rebel”, and “The Original Visionary” because movies lie. There was a lot of innovation before the 1970′s I’m pretty sure. But look, Ashton Kutcher tucks in his shirt just like Steve Jobs…...

Trailer for Jobs Starring Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs [Updated with New Images]
The trailer has been released for the Steve Jobs biopic, Jobs (thankfully, no longer called "jOBS"). The by-the-number biopic stars Ashton Kutcher as the Apple founder, and traces his path through the rise, fall, and resurrection of the company. The trailer is filled with cringeworthy titles referring to Jobs as "The Original Innovator", "The Original Rebel", and "The Original Visionary" because there was no innovation, rebellion, or vision before Steve Jobs and his friends (who he would later backstab) started building computers in their garage. Sorry, everyone who lived before 1976. I caught the film at Sundance, and thought it was fairly safe and forgettable, although I did get a laugh out of Jobs "transforming" by tucking his shirt into his jeans. Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Josh Gad, Dermot Mulroney, Lukas Haas, J.K. Simmons, Ron Eldard, and Matthew Modine. Jobs opens August 16th.

Justified, Ep. 4.11: “Decoy” a riveting Western-in-miniature
Justified, Season 4, Episode 11: “Decoy”

Written by Graham Yost and Chris Provenzano

Directed by Michael Watkins

Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on FX

Some of you multiplex-frequenters might have checked out Kim Jee-woon’s The Last Stand this past January, in which a seemingly unstoppable cartel badass has to make his way through a sleepy border town guarded by Deputy Sheriff Arnold Schwarzenegger in order to escape safely to Mexico. Despite having about one thirtieth the budget and half the runtime of that sorry effort, “Decoy” manages to take a classic Western template – the armed standoff – and pack it in with far more thrills, tense setpieces, incredible performances, and winning dialogue. This is one for the books.

TV is a medium defined by its limitations. 22 or 44 minutes to tell a story. Minimal budget. Contracts to honor. Content restrictions. Episode orders. Fan service. “Decoy” is Justified‘s version of going “all out,...

Ashton Kutcher’s Steve Jobs Biopic Delayed
Ashton Kutcher‘s take on Steve Jobs will not come out on April 19th, 2013 as had been expected since the Apple company celebrates its 37th anniversary that day. Open Road Films, which picked up the film in January before it closed the Sundance Film Festival, has yet to set a new release date. The distrib of the film reportedly requires more time to market the film. The indie Steve Jobs biopic previously titled jOBS, the distrib has also made the wise decision of omitting the Apple-speak and simply retitling it Jobs. Partially shot in the Palo Alto, Calif., garage that was Apple’s birthplace, Joshua Michael... Timothy Olyphant in Justified (2010)
David Meunier on the Dixie Mafia and Playing 'Justified' Double-Dealer Johnny Crowder
Timothy Olyphant in Justified (2010)
David Meunier has seen his share of backstabbing and intrigue on “Justified.” As Johnny Crowder, he was next in line to take over his family’s crime syndicate after his Uncle Bo (M.C. Gainey) -- until wayward cousin Boyd (Walton Goggins) got in his way. When Johnny tipped Boyd off about his uncle's Oxy shipment, Bo retaliated by shooting his nephew in the stomach, subsequently putting him in a wheelchair. With Bo dead and Boyd now running the Crowder family business, Johnny feels more than a bit supplanted -- he blames Boyd for his state and wants revenge. He also has some lingering desire for Boyd’s fiancée, Ava (Joelle Carter), which doesn’t help cousinly relations. “Justified,” now in its fourth season, finds Johnny back in the forefront as he enacts a stealthy, multi-pronged attack on Boyd, partnering with Dixie Mafia head Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns) to kill him...
