10 Best Slow-Burn Westerns, Ranked
Image
Since the days of John Wayne and Howard Hawks, Western movies have been among the most respected in cinema, blending everything from adventure and action with social commentary and history. Having built up the careers of Hollywood icons like Clint Eastwood, John Ford, and Kevin Costner, the genre has also delivered a consistent line of fantastic films, from classics like The Searchers to modern hits like Django Unchained.

While some Westerns take no time to get to the action side of the genre, others have shown a penchant for telling drawn-out, slow-burn stories, which focus on characters and tension instead of gunfights. For many, the charm of the genre lies in its stunning visuals and almost unparalleled character studies, and some movies do a much better job of honoring this than others. From epic classics to modern hidden gems, the genre has no shortage of stories that take their time in getting to the action.

Donald and Kiefer Sutherlands Western Is Surprisingly Subversive
Image
Forsaken is a Hollywood Western with a unique twist: the father-son pairing of Donald and Kiefer Sutherland for the first time. The movie explores themes of forgiveness, redemption, and different perspectives, deviating from typical Western tropes and plot points. Forsaken subverts expectations by not allowing certain relationships to progress and avoiding the typical gun duel climax of traditional Westerns.

This article contains spoilers for ForsakenForsaken is a typical Hollywood Western in many respects, but it has one thing to recommend it more than most: the pairing of Donald and Kiefer Sutherland. Before Forsaken, the father-son pair had acted together in two movies: Max Dugan Returns, Kiefer's first movie, and A Time To Kill, in which they never share a scene. Forsaken is the only movie they get equal billing in and, with Donald Sutherland's recent death, this is a feature that many may want to revisit or check out for the first time.

Johnny Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean Co-Star Weighs in on Jack Sparrow's Possible Return
Image
The idea of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie without Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow is seemingly something that fans aren't really on board with. Whether the character will return for the much-mooted sixth movie is unknown at this time, but one of Depp's co-stars, Greg Ellis, believes that, should he be left out, it would be tantamount to having a ship without a captain.

"I think for Pirates 6...in an ideal world, every character who the fans have fallen in love with will be able to come back to kind of wrap everything up. Ultimately it comes down to screenplay and story. If Jack Sparrow isn't a key, if not the key element, to wrapping up a multi-billion-dollar franchise, is it not akin to not having Captain Kirk in [the original] Star Trek?"

Greg Ellis, who played Lieutenant Commander Theodore Groves in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, has similarly...

Review: Teen Titans: The Complete Series
The Teen Titans have proven remarkably flexible since their mid-1960s debut as a collection of sidekicks. They appealed to the young readers with Bob Haney’s laughable “hip” language and as the readership grew up, so too did the members of the team, addressing adult issues with changing times and tastes.

They were propelled from mid-list to top-seller status by the Marv Wolfman and George Pérez run starting in summer 1980. These were teens on the verge of adulthood and had problems and issues that the college-age readership were drawn to. The blend of supernatural, science fiction, and super-heroics meant the stories could, and did, go anywhere.

In 2003, things went full-circle as the more mature incarnation was youthified for younger viewers as the Teen Titans hit the Cartoon Network in a five-season run. This success led to the even younger Teen Titans Go! so all the characters and their conflicts...

Review: Batman: The Brave and the Bold The Complete Third Season
Well, it’s about time. For the last twenty-five years or so, we’ve had one animated Batman series after another but to be honest only two are really good: Batman the Animated Series and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The latter has been slowly coming out on Blu-Ray with season one in 2013 and season two in 2015. This month, we’re getting the third and final season and the good news is that it is as entertaining as remembered.

After increasingly odd interpretations of Batman, Warner Animation decided to go retro and bring back the Batman of the 1960s, who was not afraid to operate in daylight and would partner with just about anyone in a mask as the need arose. Producer James Tucker saw to it that it honored the comic the series took its name from while modernizing it with contemporary characters and characterizations. The result was...

The Lion Guard: Unleash The Power DVD Review
The Lion Guard is a somewhat surprisingly good show airing on Disney Junior, and the story of Kion and his friends continues with a new DVD release The Lion Guard: Unleash the Power.

The release is the first collection of episodes available on DVD, and it’s not only a good selection because these are episodes that focus on the individual members of the Guard, but because these are some of the series’ most rewatchable efforts.

The show is not just a fun adventure for kids, but the series takes on a broad range within its episodic content, tackling some tricky issues, without actually decoding its own efforts and bogging down in overt explanation.

For example, the episode Fuli’s New Family spans a variety of issues, but chief among them is an examination of the idea that just because doing something seems objectively “right,” or, “how friends act,...

Forsaken Review
Going into Forsaken with the intent to enjoy yourself is quite easy: with likable real-life father/son pair Kiefer Sutherland and Donald Sutherland playing on-screen family, all set amidst the backdrop of a post-Civil War small western town, the potential for an emotionally-fueled slice of western escapism is palpable. And it should go without saying that the familial chemistry shared between the two leads is Forsaken‘s biggest draw.

They’re easy to watch, the setting is lush (while occasionally incongruous in a studio backlot kind-of-way), and Kiefer has the angsty gunslinger bit nailed down, but Forsaken‘s mind-numbing story derails the movie of all momentum. Its bad guys are bland (save one), its moralistic preachiness is off-putting, and its unadorned direction repeatedly robs potentially captivating scenes of any emotional relevance.

The Sutherlands occasionally manage to cut through that, but it’s far too rare. Here Sutherland the Senior plays William Clayton,...

The Sutherlands Head West in First Trailer For ‘Forsaken’
After an epic year for westerns, including Bone Tomahawk, Slow West, The Hateful Eight and even Jauja and The Revenant to an extent, we’ll get a few more this year. Following Aferim! and Jane Got a Gun this month, Forsaken will arrive in February, and today brings the first trailer.

Led by both Kiefer Sutherland and Donald Sutherland, the film follows the former as a retired gunslinger who returns to his hometown in order to the mend the relationship with his estranged father — you can guess who — but they get involved with protecting the area. Coming from longtime 24 producer and director Jon Cassar, we didn’t hear much about it when it premiered at Tiff last year, but hopefully it’s a sleeper surprise this spring.

Also starring Brian Cox, Michael Wincott, Aaron Poole, Demi Moore, and Greg Ellis, check out the trailer and poster below.

In 1872, John Henry...

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: First 'Pirates of the Caribbean' One of Most Enjoyable Summer Blockbusters of Early 21st Century
'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...

Spoilers for Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness lie ahead.

Like their forerunners, the two latest Star Trek films, in their semi-rebooted, alternative universe, are replete with famous faces from outside the franchise, surprising cameos and multiple little touches that raise a smile.

With the third film in the rebooted series coming next year, the 50th anniversary of the debut of Star Trek on TV in 1966, let's take a look at a few of the geeky nods in Jj's Trek films.

Batman: Assault On Arkham Blu-ray Review
Batman: Assault on Arkham, the latest effort from DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, casts Batman aside (for the most part) in order to focus on Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad.  The anti-hero team has gotten quite a bit of press lately for its planned live-action adaptation, so now's a great time to take a look at one of the Suicide Squad's animated iterations, now available on Blu-ray. While Batman: Assault on Arkham takes the opportunity to cast Batman villains in lead roles, it doesn't come close to exploring all the potential those characters offer.  The voice acting is spot on as usual and the animation style is a visual joy, but the half-baked plot and immature on-screen antics makes this a weak adaptation rather than a must-have addition to your collection.  Hit the jump for our Batman: Assault on Arkham Blu-ray review. Feature: The Good Any time the villains get to take center stage,...

Review: Batman: Assault on Arkham
Based on a video game, Batman: Arkham, which I do not play, I came into Batman: Assault on Arkham, without any particular predisposition. As the first editor of the Suicide Squad, I was intrigued to see how they would operate. As I feared, screenwriter Heath Corson totally misused the team in this violent, pointless direct-to-animated mess which is unleashed on Tuesday.

Amanda Waller (Cch Pounder) played within the gray areas of the DC Universe, picking damaged heroes and villains, as needed for missions. She made sure there was a field leader to keep them in line, and offered the heroes something they wanted and the villains a chance at clearing their records. Here, she collects a motley assortment of villains without a real rationale for each, putting them together for a mission that makes little sense. The silly MacGuffin here is that the Riddler (Matthew Gray Gubler) has stolen...

'Batman: Assault on Arkham' Opening Scene Eradicates the Riddler
Batman: The Animated Series (1992)
The Riddler (Matthew Gray Gubler) should have quit while he was ahead in the opening scene from Warner Bros.' Batman: Assault on Arkham, debuting on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD August 12. This clip features Edward Nygma trying to stump Amanda Waller (Cch Pounder) with a series of riddles, but the tables are quickly turned on him when he realizes it was all a setup.

For those who are making the journey to San Diego for this year's Comic-Con, we reported last week that Batman: Assault on Arkham will have its world premiere screening on Friday, July 25. In the meantime, take a look at how this animated adventure begins.

'Beware The Batman' Producer Discusses Character Selection
Murakami also discusses how the show seeks to keep the new villains from looking like carbon copies of Batman's more traditional rogue's gallery, i.e. keeping Cluemaster from being a poor man's Riddler or Magpie from being a Poison Ivy knockoff. There's a lot more insight from Glen in the video above about some of the behind-the-scenes decision-making on the show. Be sure to tune in tomorrow for an all new episode which contains the debut of the season's main villain, Anarky. What Ever Happened To...? 6 Dropped Plotlines From 'Dexter'
Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
This upcoming Sunday, Jun 30th, Showtime's 'Dexter' returns for its 8th and final season! And one of the things I’ve always loved about the show is the time it takes to set up its key story threads for the entire season; meaning it usually takes a good 3-4 episodes before I get a feel for the overall direction they’re heading in. And with that, there are often interested side stories that seem prominent at first but then never pan out. Now, I’m sure there are plenty of plot threads you’re all wondering about – whatever happened to Lumen? Is Jordan Chase presumed dead, or in hiding? Whatever happened to that hottie Masuka started dating while setting up Dexter’s bachelor party? Inquiring minds want to know. But for right now, here are 6 of my personal curiosities. With the final season fast approaching, might some of...

Irrational Reveals The Full Voice Cast For 'Bioshock Infinite'
Troy Baker will be playing Booker while Courtnee Draper takes on the role of Elizabeth as Irrational lays out the "Mass Effect," "Kingdom Hearts II," and "Sealab 2021" vets among the cast portraying the heroes and villains of "Bioshock Infinite."

You can find the full cast list after the jump.

The coolest thing about this cast list is that it's populated by veteran voice actors and not simply sprinkled liberally with television and film actors putting in a couple of hours in the booth. "Dishonored" had a great cast of performers turning in one of the more uninspired collection of voice overs in recent memory.

Troy Baker

(Final Fantasy Xiii, Catherine, Red Faction: Guerilla, Brothers In Arms, Batman: Arkham City)

as Booker DeWitt

Courtnee Draper

(Surf’s Up, Ponyo, and Kingdom Hearts II)

as Elizabeth

Jennifer Hale

(Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic)

Review: Ape Escape DVD
I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting when I popped Ape Escape into my DVD player. My frame of reference of the series was the original Ape Escape on PS1; the pioneer software for Sony's dual-stick Dualshock controller; a sweet soundtrack filled with poppy drum 'n' bass, and more ridiculous monkeys than you could count - trying their hardest to put their Iq-giving 'Pipo Helmets' to good use.

Plot-wise, the Ape Escape DVD provides the last of those three. A series of two-to-three minute episodes that largely focus on Specter - the villain of the Ape Escape series. He's an evil ape granted a genius intelligence though an experimental helmet. With his army of fellow apes (given helmets of their own), he intends to take over the world... but never manages to succeed.

At the very least, I expected an animation of the Ape Escape series to be an anime.

Exclusive: Michael Rooker Talks Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy!
James Gunn
Anyone who knows James Gunn's work knows that he is a very loyal director who likes to use certain actors again and again. So when it was announced that he would be directing and re-writing Marvel Studios epic sci-fi adventure Guardians of the Galaxy, speculation started to fly about who would be cast in the film. Many believed that Nathan Fillion, star of James Gunn's Slither and loved by Joss Whedon, would be taking on one of the lead roles. But the actor denied that, saying he was too commited to his series Castle to board the project.

That brings us next to Michael Rooker, who also starred in Slither and had an important role in Super. He, too, claims to be too busy with his own television series The Walking Dead to think about Guardians of the Galaxy, but he doesn't rule it out. In fact, he...

Fox’s ‘Touch’ Adds To Cast For Season 2
Lukas Haas (Inception) and Saxon Sharbino have joined Fox’s drama series Touch as new regulars as the series reboots with moving the action (and leading duo Martin, Kiefer Sutherland, and his son Jake, David Mazouz) from New York to Los Angeles. In the first season finale, Martin and Jake met Lucy (Maria Bello), a distraught mother whose gifted daughter (Sharbino) is missing. The casting keeps 13-year-old Sharbino at Fox where she was discovered last pilot season when she beat out a score of young actresses to land the lead in the Karyn Usher pilot. Despite the fact that the pilot didn’t make it to series, Fox brass loved Sharbino’s performance. Haas will play a genius working for the mysterious Aster Corps that is after Jake. Joining Touch as a recurring is Greg Ellis (24), playing a journalist and an old friend of Martin’s.
