Sentimental Value ‘Cannes’ Movie Review: Joachim Trier Returns With Another Complex Examination of The Bonds We Share And Those We Break
Image
Expectations couldn’t possibly be higher for Trier’s follow-up to “The Worst Person in the World,” and if initial word-of-mouth is to be believed, “Sentimental Value” (Original title: Affeksjonsverdi) has more than delivered. Maybe—just maybe—the overwhelming sweep of Palme d’Or buzz (culminating in an eventual second-place Grand Prix win) and annual Neon exhalation might be due in part to Trier’s chosen approach that has resonated with the artistic crowd: healing through the artistic process.

Yeah, this is gonna be one of those movies, and given Trier’s Bergmanian touches to the overlap of life and art, it might not be presumptuous to compare “Sentimental Value,” in some way, to Mia Hansen-Løve’s own art-reckoning project “Bergman Island.” In Trier’s case, the attempted reconciliation takes on his usual millennial quirk in such a way that sometimes risks diverting the emotional power of the ideas he...

'Faithless' Frida Gustavsson Calls the Ingmar Bergman Adaptation Perilous
Image
A story of marriage, infidelity, and the emotional turmoil that gradually follows suit, Faithless is a raw, atmospheric take on the Liv Ullman and Ingmar Bergman classic. A story that has been stretched across time, the adaptation stays true to its roots. Marianne (Frida Gustavsson) is happily married to Markus (August Wittgenstein), but things get complicated when Markus best friend, David (Gustav Lindh), comes to stay for the summer. What starts as a spark between Marianna and David turns into a dramatic affair that changes the course of their lives forever. Forty years later, an older David (Jesper Christensen) and Marianne (Lena Endre) reconnect, still dealing with the consequences of their actions.

Tomas Alfredson Stands by Decision to Turn Bergman-Penned ‘Faithless’ Into Series: ‘It Would Be Different if I Remade “The Seventh Seal”’
Image
Some people claim you can’t touch anything Ingmar Bergman was involved in. Tomas Alfredson is not one of these people.

“Not everything Bergman did was genius, but a lot of it was,” he tells Variety. Swedish director is behind new series “Faithless,” premiering in Toronto and based on the 2000 film directed by Liv Ullman and written by Bergman himself.

“This is his most autobiographical work. Ever. He started writing it several times and couldn’t finish, because he was so tormented by guilt. There was something in this material I felt could tackle in a different way. It would be different if I remade ‘The Seventh Seal’ or ‘Fanny and Alexander,’ but this? It was open for reinterpretation.”

Alfredson, of “Let the Right One In” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” fame, made a show that’s “very free from the original,” he underlines. Even though Lena Endre returns to the role of Marianne,...

Tomas Alfredson on Remaking Ingmar Bergman’s Steamy Infidelity Drama ‘Faithless’ as a TV Series
Image
The story of Faithless, the new six-part TV series from director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) is familiar to European arthouse fans. Renowned director David Howard, 73, is reunited with the great love of his life, the actress Marianne Vogler, 75, and forced to reflect on the painful consequences of their affair decades earlier when Marianne was married to David’s best friend, Markus. In 2000, actress-director Liv Ullmann (Cries and Whispers), muse and frequent collaborator to the legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal), adapted the story from Bergman’s previously unproduced screenplay. The tale of lust, adultery, and the damage wrought by desire, premiered in Cannes and has been hailed as a modern-day classic.

For his limited series adaptation, Alfredson teamed with screenwriter Sara Johnsen (July 22) to reexamine and expand Ullmann and Bergman’s original story. The basics of the plot are the same.

Tomas Alfredson & Sara Johnsen On Adapting Ingmar Bergman’s ‘Faithless’ & Why TV Is A Much “Freer Art Form” For Creatives – London TV Screenings
Image
Exclusive: Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, now best known as the director behind beautiful, taut features like Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, wrote to Swedish screen legend Ingmar Bergman sometime in the early 2000s with an idea. Bergman’s response was characteristically colorful.

“What the hell is this? What do you mean?” Bergman told Alfredson.

Alfredson had told the Persona filmmaker that he wanted to remake Faithless, the 2000 feature Bergman had written about an imaginary woman who recollects her painful experience of adultery to an aging filmmaker. The pic played in competition that year in Cannes and was directed by Bergman’s ex-wife, actress Liv Ullmann.

“This was long before everyone was producing remakes, so it was a very unusual question, especially for Bergman,” Alfredson said.

Fast forward to February 2024 and Alfredson is deep into an edit of a contemporary TV adaptation of Faithless he has...

Kiss Me (Kyss mig) | Review - Polari (aGLIFF) 2012
Mia (Ruth Vega Fernandez) is on the traditional track: successful architecture career, a wonderful apartment in the city, and she’s engaged to her boyfriend of many years, Tim (Joakim Nätterqvist). Mia and Tim travel to celebrate the 60th birthday and engagement of Mia’s father, Lasse (Krister Henriksson) to Elisabeth (Lena Endre). Mia’s younger brother, Oskar (Tom Ljungman), introduces her to Elisabeth’s daughter, Frida (Liv Mjönes). The idea is for everyone to get along like one big happy family. As with so many Scandinavian films I’ve seen recently there is so much beauty in Kiss Me – from the actors themselves to the lighting as well as the Swedish countryside. Writer and director Alexandra-Therese Keining captures one of the most intimate love stories I’ve seen in years. There is nothing trite or syrupy about Mia and Frida as we witness the evolution of their relationship. Keining...

Watch: Clip from 'The Master' Promotes San Francisco Castro Screening
The Weinstein Co. is taking full advantage of the hype surrounding Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master to not only promote the film, but to place an emphasis on seeing it in theaters in 70mm as it screened twice in New York over the weekend following last week's Chicago screening and now a new clip has come online promoting an August 21 screening in San Francisco at the Castro Theatre. The film is an original story written by Anderson in which Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls. Joaquin Phoenix is one of said "lost souls", co-starring alongside Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Lena Endre, Jesse Plemons, David Warshofsky, Rami Malek and Joshua Close. The film will have a Venice Film Festival premiere,...

Twelve The Master Photos with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix
Philip Seymour Hoffman at an event for The Ides of March (2011)
12 photos have arrived from director Paul Thomas Anderson's latest drama, The Master, which is already being heralded by critics as a modern masterpiece and the film to beat at this year's Oscars. The story follows a man (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who creates a questionable new religion that soon gains quite a following. Check out these latest "low-fi" images, followed by comments from Philip Seymour Hoffman and producer JoAnne Sellar, who both downplay the movie's connection to L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology.

Attempting to play down the presumed fact that The Master is a thinly veiled biopic about L. Ron Hubbard and his creation of Scientology, Philip Seymour Hoffman made the following statement.

"It's not the L. Ron Hubbard story. [Scientology] was one of the bigger movements at the time, but there were a lot of movements at that time. There's nothing about how I'm behaving or talking that echoes [Hubbard]. I...

New Poster for 'The Master' Looks Political
Is it just me or does this new poster for The Master look like an advertisement for Barack Obama's re-election campaign? Am I missing the symbolism? Maybe I am just a little slow this Monday morning, but I'm not entirely getting the meaning? Is it a message of "hope" compared to the half-empty bottle of alcohol seen on the first poster? Despair leads to Hope leads to... Am I looking for meaning where there is none? A lot of conversation surrounding Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film was swirling over the weekend after it screened for the first time in Santa Monica. As would be expected, reactions were generous for the film in which Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls.
