Image
[This story contains spoilers from season three, episode five of The Gilded Age.]

Broadway actor Jordan Donica’s arrival as Dr. William Kirkland has spiced up Peggy Scott’s love life on The Gilded Age.

What started as a house call to treat his mentor’s daughter from a debilitating cold has blossomed into one of the HBO’s hit period drama’s hottest romances. Since his introduction in episode two (“What the Papers Say”), Dr. Kirkland has become a fixture. Peggy (a role Denée Benton has made a fan-favorite) and her mother Dorothy’s (Audra McDonald) visit to their cousin Athena (Jessica Frances Dukes) in Newport, Rhode Island, where his family has long maintained a home, in episode three (“Love Is Never Easy’) solidified his presence. From the moment Dr. Kirkland knew Peggy was nearby, he reached out with a letter requesting permission to “call on her.” That led to a romantic get-to-know-you stroll, parasol and all, by the...

Image
Lynne Meadow will step aside after a 53-year run as artistic director of the highly influential Manhattan Theatre Club that included guiding shows by such playwrights as Christopher Durang, John Guare, Beth Henley, Terrence McNally, Eureka Day‘s Jonathan Spector and many others.

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 3 Opens With 2.7 Million Viewers in Three Days, Up 27% From Season 2 Premiere
Image
“The Gilded Age” returned to HBO with its third season, on Sunday night and has shown an uptick in viewership compared to previous seasons.

In its first three days of availability, the Season 3 premiere reached 2.7 million viewers, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. That marks a 27% increase from the 2.1 million viewers who watched the Season 2 premiere in the same amount of time, and a 30% increase from Season 1’s 2 million viewers. These statistics account for a combination of viewers on HBO’s linear channel as well as streams on Max. It should be noted that the totals are incomparable to that of other titles on HBO, as the network typically reports viewership achieved in a single night rather over the course of three days.

Season 3 of “The Gilded Age” is expected to continue growing in viewership week by week. Both previous seasons saw steady increases over time, with finale episodes bringing in...

Casey Bloys, Julian Fellowes & Cast Reflect On ‘The Gilded Age’ Then, And Now, As Season 3 Premieres At Tribeca Festival
Image
“One of the hallmarks of an HBO show is always reflecting something in society today, and the idea that we would be in another Gilded Age is somewhat unbelievable,” said Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content. But “I’ll take railroad daddy over Elon Musk.”

Bloys was introducing the Season 3 premiere of the HBO series, referring to the ruthlessly ambitious fictional railroad magnate George Russell played by Morgan Spector, and to the billionaire Tesla CEO.

Comparisons to Gilded Age late 19th century Gilded Age and now continued throughout a Q&a after the first episode world premiered at the Tribeca Festival. The show created by Julian Fellowes debuts June 22.

“I mean, there were moments when we were filming, and they were racing each other to the moon, their new rockets, and that kind of thing. And you thought, well, they didn’t have rockets, so they didn’t do this.

‘The Gilded Age’ Teases Marriage and Upheaval in Season 3
Image
HBO is promising more high-society unrest in season three of The Gilded Age.

The network has set a June 22 premiere date released a first teaser for the drama’s forthcoming season. The teaser shows Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) sticking to her “too much is never enough” ethos and preparing to marry off her daughter, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) — a prospect which, judging by Farmiga’s expression in a few shots in the minute-long clip, doesn’t excite Gladys very much.

Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), meanwhile, expresses an opposite view: “Some people want to marry for love. I know I do,” she says — to which her aunt Agnes (Christine Baranski) replies, “I don’t understand.” Watch the teaser below.

The season logline for season three of The Gilded Age reads, “Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society.

Deborah Kampmeier (‘The Gilded Age’ director) on 2nd season’s ‘heartbreaking’ scenes and ‘complex female characters’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“I was obsessed with Edith Wharton when I was a teenager. That whole world was very much a part of my imagination when I was a young girl,” remembers Deborah Kampmeier, who directs two episodes of the second season of “The Gilded Age.” The HBO drama series draws heavily on the works of the legendary writer, and the director’s affinity for her writing and the opportunity to step into “the decadence of the world” of that period drew her to the project. She was also inspired by the “epic nature of the style” of the show that was established in its first season by directors Michael Engler and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

To acclimate herself to the visual style of the lavish period piece, which is set in 1880s New York, Kampmeier “really studied season one,” sharing, “I watched those episodes multiple times.” She worked...

The Gilded Age Season 2 Reflects Our Current Labor Moment
Image
Fans of HBO original series The Gilded Age have been waiting patiently since March 2022 to find out what happens next in the battle between New York’s Old Money and Nouveau Riche.

Season two continues the ensemble format established in season one by centering the storylines of the Van Rhijins and Russells plus the stories of their respective household members. Peggy Scott’s plotline takes a deeper look into African-American society beyond the city. There’s also a new cast of guest stars and supporting characters creating tension for our established characters.

Season one left off with George Russell (Morgan Spector) successfully avoiding financial ruin because of the railroad accident. This season, George’s employees are growing frustrated with working long hours in the steel mills while George is concerned that the possibilities of strikes and boycotts will cost him his own livelihood and those who depend on his railroad company for theirs.

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 1 Recap: What to Remember for Season 2
Image
“The Gilded Age” is back for a second season, moving to the coveted Sunday night slot on HBO and Max. Creator and co-showrunner Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) worked with co-showrunner Sonja Warfield to bring the American period drama to life, incorporating historical accuracy with the help of Dr. Erica Dunbar. Directors included Michael Engler, Salli Richardson Whitfield and Deborah Kampmeier.

Season 1 left off with the threat of an opera house battle — not one involving troops and guns, but socialites and wealth. “The Gilded Age” was peppered with historical events and landmarks, including the introduction of electricity by Thomas Edison, and the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. The hand of the Statue of Liberty that holds the torch, which was delivered before the rest of the statue from France, served as a date spot, and Clara Barton and the American Red Cross made an important appearance. Fellowes also injected servant-class stories into the ensemble cast,...

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 Trailer: The Decadent HBO Series Returns in October
Image
Nothing stays the same forever — not even on a show from Julian Fellowes, the creator best known for the comforting (and occasionally chaotic) vibes of “Downton Abbey.”

Fellowes’ latest HBO drama, “The Gilded Age,” returns soon for its second season — another installment full of lavish costumes, clashes of new and old ideology, and Carrie Coon waging psychological warfare on an impervious Christine Baranski. That’s right, Bertha Russell (Coon) and Agnes Van Rhijn (Baranski) are still at it in Season 2, the former while she pushes New York toward the urban, modern, and industrial; the latter by gatekeeping from her tea room and insisting that her niece Marian (Louisa Jacobson) focus on getting married — and ostensibly feeling less enthused when Agnes’ sister Ada (Cynthia Nixon) appears to be finding love. The trailer uses words like “fighter,” “battle,” and “war,” leaving no ambiguity as to what exactly is going on between these...

“Yes, and you’ll need to pick a team,” Coon’s Russell responds. “Head-to-head and one will be the winner.”

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 Teaser: Carrie Coon Starts a Social War in 19th Century New York
Image
“The Gilded Age” is losing a bit of its high society luster, thanks to a certain 19th century social climber.

The official synopsis reads: The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic change, of great conflict between the old ways and brand new systems, and of huge fortunes made and lost. Season 2 begins on Easter morning 1883, with the news that Bertha Russell’s bid for a box at the Academy of Music has been rejected. This Was Julian Fellowes' Inspiration For The First Downton Abbey Film
Image
Series creator Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") could have kept "Downton Abbey" going for years. After all, soap operas are notorious for spanning generations. But I admire the restraint to put a pin in the series after six seasons of television. It felt like the perfect place to allow the characters to find their own futures. But as we know now, of course, the future of "Downton Abbey" was far from over.

Since the series finale in 2015, Highclere Castle has opened its doors to the aristocratic Crawleys and their downstairs staff once again with two theatrical feature films ("Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture" and "Downton Abbey: A New Era"), both of which are excellent extensions of the British period melodrama. I'm still kind of stunned they were able to pull it off, considering the obligation of giving the hefty ensemble their time to shine within the time constraints of a movie.

Salli Richardson-Whitfield is staying with HBO.

The director, producer and actress has extended her overall deal, which covers both the premium cable channel and streamer HBO Max, for two more years. Richardson-Whitfield first signed a deal with HBO in September 2020.

Under the extension, she’ll join HBO’s Los Angeles Lakers drama Winning Time as an executive producer and direct half of season two’s episodes (she helmed two in the first season) while continuing as an EP on The Gilded Age. Additionally, her Early May production company will continue to develop series with the intent to tell stories from unique and diverse perspectives. Among Early May’s projects is Motherland Bounce, a half-hour HBO Max show based on the life of rapper Nissim Black. Comedian Moshe Kasher is writing the script.

Why ‘The Gilded Age’ Decided 2 Composers Were Better Than 1
Rupert Gregson-Williams
Between them, you’ve definitely heard the work of composers (and brothers) Harry and Rupert Gregson-Williams in film and TV projects such as “Wonder Woman,” “The Crown,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” “House of Gucci,” “The Alienist,” “Catherine the Great” and a large swath of the Adam Sandler oeuvre. But only recently have they decided to join forces to become a double-threat, on HBO’s recently renewed, turn-of-the-century hit “The Gilded Age.”

However, this series is not their first duo effort. “Our first experience was with George Clooney; I’m not sure how the opportunity came about,” Harry said. “But ‘Catch-22’ [for Hulu] was our first foray into co-composing with each other. And, you know, it takes a while to feel out each other and how we how we would deal with the various obstacles and how we would get the most creative juices out of each other.

‘Downton Abbey’ Recap: What Happened in the First Movie? (Video)
Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, Allen Leech, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Lily James, Fifi Hart, and Oliver Barker in Downton Abbey (2010)
A new “Downton Abbey” movie is on the horizon, but before you watch “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” you may need or want a brief refresher on what happened in the first film.

Released in 2019, the aptly named “Downton Abbey” is a feature film continuation of the wildly popular TV series that ran for six series and wrapped up in 2015. Show creator Julian Fellowes returned to write the “Downton Abbey” film, and frequent director of the show’s TV episodes Michael Engler directed the movie.

Luckily, a short four-minute video recap of the events of the first “Downton Abbey” movie has been released online, with actor Kevin Doyle (who plays Mr. Molesley) narrating a brief summation of what happened in that film.

Set in 1927, roughly a year after the TV series ended, “Downton Abbey” finds the Crawleys receiving word that King George V and Queen Mary are intending to visit...

‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ Finally Gives a Beloved Character the Happy Ending He Deserves
Image
[Editor’s note: The following post contains some spoilers for “Downton Abbey: A New Era.”]

Thomas Barrow, dashing butler of “Downton Abbey,” has taken quite a journey from nefarious footman to stalwart captain of the Grantham household. Played by the effortlessly poised Robert James-Collier, Thomas launched the early days of “Downton Abbey,” when it was still just a runaway hit TV series, as a slick foil to the good-natured characters filling out most of the wholesome storylines. Over the seasons, the series revealed that Thomas’ schemes were motivated by his struggle as a closeted gay man living in early 20th century England. The character softened when he was slowly accepted by the household, upstairs and downstairs, revealing his tender heart and desire to find love.

But fans were disappointed by Thomas’ storyline in the first movie, “Downton Abbey” (2019), which dangled the possibility of romance for Thomas only to end in a violent brush with the law. At the time, director...

‘The Gilded Age’: Carrie Coon & Morgan Spector Kick Off Season 2 Production In First Look Photo
Image
Production has officially begun on The Gilded Age Season 2 and HBO is giving fans a first look at the set in a new photo of Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector above. Shooting is underway in Rhode Island and New York state.

While it’s unknown how much time has elapsed since the Season 1 finale, the Russells have plenty of reasons to look so gleeful. At last, Bertha (Coon) made her big debut in society with a glorious gala that was attended by anyone who is anyone in New York City—even if some were there against their wishes.

Yes, the likes of Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) and her sister Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon) dressed to the nines for the celebration but they only made an appearance at the behest of their longtime friend Caroline Astor (Donna Murphy), who was there herself to please her daughter.

Here’s what HBO...
