'The Hero We Needed at the Time': Avatar: Legend of Korra Star Praises Lead as Og 'No-Nonsense' Female Role Model
Image
Fans of Avatar Korra in The Legend of Korrawill love her all over again after hearing what fellow franchise voice actor Richard Epcar had to say about her in a recent guest appearance.

Avatar Aang was once the young male lead of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Legend of Korra needed a protagonist who would fill the same role as Aang in the Avatar world while otherwise feeling fresh and new. Aside from having a much more brash and confrontational personality, Korra also shows how men and women alike can be the world's greatest hero with the power of the Avatar Cycle. Epcar, who voiced Saikhan in the series, commented on Korra's role directly during his appearance on the most recent official Avatar podcast, "Braving the Elements," co-hosted by Korra voice actor Janet Varney and Zuko voice actor Dante Basco.

'This Film Contains That Sick Energy': Original Ghost in the Shell Anime Director Oversees New Big Screen Release After 20 Years
Image
Ghost in the Shell remains a staple of cyberpunk anime, with the original animated movie adaptation still highly regarded by fans and filmmakers. Now, the director of the first two films is recalling a particularly sick sentiment that went into the second movie.

Speaking about the remastered 4K versions of Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence that are coming to theaters in a new statement via Mantan Web, director Mamoru Oshii noted the development of the second movie. Particularly proud of the film, this feeling came after a traumatic personal event. This all comes as the original film is celebrating its own major milestone, with the sequel having just reached a similar achievement.

Every Father Figure in Bleach, Ranked from Worst to Best
Image
With characters being slow to age in Bleach, there aren't that many fathers to go around. Of those few fathers, many of them aren't great. However, there are others who have stepped up to raise not just their own children, but their grandchildren, too. There are many ways to be a good dad, and more ways to be a bad one. This shonen shows a whole spectrum of dynamics, and they each impact all those involved. While each character's father is never the only influence in their life, this relationship has always been important.

Arguably including grandparents for raising their grandchildren, is pushing it for what qualifies in this list. Characters like Sora Inoe, who raised his sister, could have also been added. However, he's always been firmly considered Orihime Inoe's brother. Relationships in Bleach are often fluid and don't have to fall under strict boxes of how characters are...

10 Shonen Anime Characters That Could Almost Defeat Gojo
Image
Jujutsu Kaisen introduced anime fans to one of the most famously overpowered anime characters of all, the elite sorcerer Satoru Gojo. He has harnessed the power of infinity itself with his Limitless curse energy, and when he combines that with his masterful martial arts, Satoru Gojo is practically untouchable in battle. Satoru proved it many times in battle, such as when he trounced Jogo with the overwhelming power of his Domain Expansion.

Few anime characters stand a chance of defeating Satoru Gojo and his formidable power of Infinity, but a fair number could come close to challenging him. None of them have what it takes to finish the job, but they could still give Satoru Gojo a workout and push him harder than Jogo and the other curses in Mahito's squad ever could. These elite fighters are some of the strongest anime heroes and villains, whose powers often bend and...

Bleach Actor Suggests a Major Wedding Is Coming For the Anime at Last
Image
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has made a name for itself with all the major additions it's made to the manga's story, and it looks like fans are in for at least one more big change: a wedding. Once skipped over in the manga, fans may get to see this wedding in animated form.

When Thousand-Year Blood War began to be adapted, fans were eager to see the new series specifically because the ending of the manga was so rushed that it skipped over some very important scenes. While changes were minimal at first, they've grown more significant with each cour, and now the currently airing episodes have featured some major new scenes, particularly involving Uryu, making him into a character as important as he was always stated to be. Fans expect the fourth cour to include a substantial amount of added content, based on how much manga is left to adapt,...

These Two Villains from One Piece and Bleach Share Strong Similarities
Image
This article contains spoilers from One Piece Chapter 1125

While Bleach and One Piece are both shnen anime that gained popularity around the same time, they are usually very different from each other. They have incredibly different styles, themes, stories and characters. However, there are rare occasions where they overlap. Despite taking different approaches, the series are both too big not to go over similar topics at points. In this case, two of the major villains from each show happen to have a lot of similarities.

Yhwach has been a force of nature since his introduction. He's been a dominating force that's brought devastation to Soul Society. While he's currently having a hard time in his battle against Ichibe Hyosube, he's still unmatched for the sheer destruction caused as a Bleach antagonist. On the other hand, Imu is a lot more mysterious character. There has been almost nothing shared about them yet,...

Told with a mix of plot-heavy story arcs and stand-alone episodes, Stand Alone Complex offers excellent characterization, a captivating plot, and a look at a future that feels a little too close for comfort in modern times.

Mamoru Oshii’s ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Returns With New Trailer Ahead of Re-Release
No doubt eager to capitalize on the upcoming live-action adaptation, Anchor Bay Entertainment and its subsidiary Manga Entertainment are gearing up for a deluxe rerelease of the original animated Ghost in the Shell. First released in Japan and the Us in 1995, the landmark science fiction film by legendary director Mamoru Oshii is one of the most visionary and influential films in the “cyberpunk” subgenre that exploded onto the silver screen with Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and enjoys a longstanding literary tradition thanks to authors like William Gibson and Neal Stephenson. Taking an unmistakably Japanese (and indubitably Oshii) approach to the genre, Ghost famously features both mesmerizing action sequences that inspired the Wachowskis in the direction of The Matrix, and lengthy meditations on transhumanism, existentialism, and spirituality in a hypercapitalist dystopia where human bodies and memories are subject to the same means of production and reproduction as any material resource.

Sooooo What's going On With 'Metroid'?
While Nintendo decidedly played it safe with their versus E3 Nintendo Direct announcements, one game in particular seemed to be missing -- "Metroid."

Of course Retro -- the masterminds behind the amazing "Prime" trilogy -- is the "no duh" dev for orchestrating a new Samus adventure. One problem though; they're currently deep in development for "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze."  When asked if there were any plans for a new "Metroid" game they told IGN:

"Well, we love Metroid. We love Metroid Prime and we always will. It was a big part of our studio, the culture of the studio. The majority of that team is still at Retro," Kelbaugh said. "When we finished with Dk, we still had a lot of really cool ideas. That, in combination with what the Wii U could do, we really wanted to continue with that. Again, Retro Studios loves Metroid. We might do another one someday.

James Bond villains harm nuclear power's public image, says scientist
Royal Society of Chemistry president says evil characters' hidden reactors have contributed to negative perceptions

He may have been On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but James Bond and the power-hungry villains he saved the world from did no service to the image of nuclear power, a leading scientist has claimed.

The film version of Dr No, first screened 50 years ago and still a TV favourite, and other Bond movies have helped frame public perceptions of the hazards of nuclear power along with accidents such as Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima, according to David Phillips, president of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

He feared the portrait of the evil megalomaniac and his nuclear reactor hidden away on a Caribbean island contributed to the "entirely negative" and "remorselessly grim" perception of the industry as a force for evil.

Phillips told the BBC that when nuclear power was discussed "it is not...

James Bond Villains Make Us Hate Nuclear Power
In the film "Dr. No," super-duper-spy James Bond stops a villain bent on sabotaging a space launch with a nuclear ray by pushing him into a reactor's boiling cooling vat and blowing the entire plant to hell.

"It is not at all surprising that the public at home and abroad are skeptical," said Phillips "Nuclear power has to be part of the future national energy mix,...

Blu-ray Review: Space Dogs
Space Dogs

Stars (the voices of): Chloe Grace, Dorothy Fahn, Richard Epcar, Spike Spencer | Written by John Chua, Aleksandr Talal | Directed by Inna Evlannikova, Svyatoslav Ushakov

A brand new CG animated movie from Russia, Space Dogs is one of the first stereoscopic 3D animations to be released in the territory, and now it makes its UK debut (in 2D) on DVD and Blu-ray from the folks at Signature Entertainment. The film is very loosely based on the true story of Belka and Strelka, the two dogs who were famously sent to space by the Soviet Union in the 60′s.

In this family-friendly film version of events, Belka the circus dog is thrust onto the streets of Moscow when the rocket she is piloting hurtles out of control and out of the circus tent. Fortunately the crash leads her to meet a streetwise dog named Strelka and her rat friend Venya.
