Per The Hollywood Reporter, Westworld star Thandiwe Newton has signed on for the upcoming Anaconda reboot film from director Tom Gormican. Silo star Steve Zahn has also joined the project, as have Ione Skye and Selton Mello, the latter of whom will be making his English-language feature film debut in Anaconda.

Paul Rudd and Jack Black are teaming up for a new version of the campy 1997 cult classic Anaconda for Sony Pictures, and to announce the release date, the pair made a hilarious video together (below). In the short clip, Black promises, "There's gonna be a big f**kin' snake, and it's gonna rip." Two comic legends and this description should be more than enough to put butts in seats come Christmas Day 2025, when the movie will hit theaters.

Little else is known about the project, which was first announced back in August 2024. Given the casting of Rudd and Black, it's clear the studio, Sony Pictures, wants to take the Anaconda franchise into more intentionally comedic territory. Tom Cruise has positioned himself as one of the greatest action stars of the last two decades thanks to franchise roles like playing Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible. As if we didnt already know that Cruise has the ability to draw a crowd, U.S. Paramount+ subscribers have been making it abundantly clear, as four of the stars movies are currently dominating the streamers Top 10 even though most of them have been on the platform for more than a year.

Top of the pile is 2022s highest grossing movie, Top Gun: Maverick, which is currently holding third position on the chart. The sequel to Cruises 1986 blockbuster suffered numerous delays during the Covid pandemic, and all the signs suggested that when it arrived the reaction would be quite muted in the same way as many other pandemic movies. Instead, Cruises return to the skies took off at Mach 10 and just kept going.

The new Anaconda movie from Sony Pictures is currently in the early stages of development. The horror movie, which will provide a new take on the titular snake, recently added another big name to its cast.

Per Deadline, Daniela Melchior will join Jack Black and Paul Rudd in the upcoming Anaconda film. The actor is best known for her role as Cleo Cazo in 2021's The Suicide Squad. She also appeared in Fast X, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and in Road House, where she starred as Ellie opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. Melchior is also set to star in the Amazon MGM Studios film Balls Up alongside Mark Wahlberg.

Anaconda has been remade in China, and an official trailer has been released for the horror film.

Per Bloody Disgusting, the Chinese Anaconda remake comes from co-directors Xiang Qui Liang and Xiang He Sheng. Like the original film from 1997, the new Anaconda tells the story of a group of humans falling prey to the world's largest snake. A further sequel in the popular Top Gun franchise is now in the works, and already has a story, according to the legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Discussing the potential of Top Gun 3 with Screen Rant, Bruckheimer revealed that Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has a "wonderful" idea for where the story will go next, and it’s an idea that Hollywood icon and lead actor Tom Cruise loves.

For us 90s kids, Dick Tracy was an interesting monster of a movie. It seemed to take a lot of cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which was released the previous summer, but it definitely had a distinct voice of its own. Dick Tracy was another classic pulp adaptation of an urban enforcer that had very dynamic visuals and an over-the-top rogues gallery. It even sported a score by Danny Elfman, which would have his signature atmospheric sound. The movie would introduce a generation of young audiences to the 1930’s film noir/ detective movie genre. Additionally, the movie brought back Warren Beatty after a three-year absence when his last film, 1987’s Ishtar, was a big flop. Having a star like Beatty in a big-budget franchise like this was an enormous asset for the re-budding intellectual property. And the star power wouldn’t even stop there.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been named the best original film screenplay of 2023 at the Writers Guild Awards, which were held on Sunday evening in Los Angeles and New York.

The win gives “Everything Everywhere” a sweep of the four major Hollywood guild awards: the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild, where it won the ensemble cast award and set a record with four wins in the five SAG categories.

The win made the freewheeling indie film only the fifth film to sweep the major guilds since the SAG awards first handed out the ensemble award in 1995. The first four were “American Beauty,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Argo,” all of which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

If “Everything Everywhere” was a strong favorite to win that award going into this weekend, it will now be a commanding one heading into Oscar week.

Writers had to share the spotlight with independent filmmakers and sound designers last night, but they’ll have it all to themselves tonight when the 75th annual Writers Guild of America awards are officially unveiled.

The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) labor unions represent writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news.

Michelle Buteau was hosting from New York and said she felt “luckier than Pete Davidson’s dick” to be presiding over the ceremony. Her raucous monologue included lines such as, “Tom Cruise is more of a ‘Bottom Gun’ than a ‘Top Gun.'”

They didn’t qualify for consideration under the guild’s guidelines or those of its international partners.

The Original Screenplay frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is in contention for this guild award as are two of its Oscar rivals: “The Fabelmans” and “Tar.” The WGA race is rounded out by the scripts for “The Menu” and “Nope.”

Likewise our predicted winner for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars — “Women Talking” — is vying for this award too. It faces off against a pair of Oscar nominees — “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — plus “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “She Said....

The Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) and Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) announced the outstanding screenplay nominees for their annual Writers Guild Awards just one day after the 2023 Oscars nominations came out. Given the organization’s strict eligibility rules, the WGA has created interesting differences between its choices and the Academy’s this year.

Looking at the five WGA Original Screenplay nominees, only three were nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar: “The Fabelmans,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “TÁR.” The difference could easily be chalked up to the fact that Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” were not eligible, as they were not written under the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba) or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of an international affiliate Guild.

The writer of Top Gun, Jack Epps Jr., has stated that Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is the opposite of what a Top Gun candidate should be, with both films in the franchise proving he is correct. In the making-of documentary for Top Gun, Danger Zone: The Making of Top Gun, Epps Jr. stated, "Maverick as a character is anti-Top Gun...". He went on to say that the ideals of the Top Gun program were centered around camaraderie and togetherness and that making Maverick the opposite of that was a creative liberty he took to give the film dramatic weight, also stating that writers should never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The highest grossing movie of the year, Top Gun: Maverick, is going back into select theaters this Friday, Dec. 2 on premium large format screens and Imax for a two-week run.

The news comes in the wake of Paramount+ setting a drop date for Tom Cruise’s biggest grossing movie of all-time on Dec. 22 in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the UK and Latin America.

Paramount Pictures has failed to get the copyright lawsuit over Top Gun: Maverick dismissed.

On Wednesday, Nov. 9, a judge rejected the studio’s motion to dismiss the suit, saying it “contains sufficient well-pleaded facts” to support its claims of copyright infringement, breach of contract, and declaratory relief. Paramount will now have to file its answer to the suit no later than Nov. 28.

The lawsuit was brought by the family of Ehud Yonay, a journalist who wrote a 1983 article for California magazine called “Top Guns,” which served as the basis for the original 1986 movie.

I never in a million years would have predicted "Top Gun: Maverick" to be one of the highest-grossing pictures of the year. It's a legitimate old-school four-quadrant success story, a minor miracle even under normal circumstances in a blockbuster world obsessed with superheroes and lightsabers, and a hands-down praise-Jesus miracle in pandemic times.

It makes sense, then, that if this old-school type of blockbuster is going to blow the doors off of movie theater attendance numbers that the studio would go similarly old school when it comes to the film's second life on the home video market.

“Top Gun: Maverick” has just sped past box office juggernaut “Titanic” to become Paramount Pictures’ highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office of all time.

Having earned over 601.9 million at the U.S. box office to date, Tom Cruise’s sequel inched past “Titanic,” which in 1997 ultimately grossed 600.7 million. And it brings “Maverick’s” global total to 1.19 billion, with room to grow yet.

However, it’s worth noting that “Titanic” has been re-released since 1997 and its actual domestic total sits at 659.3 million, still placing it at #7 on the all-time domestic charts. What’s more, James Cameron’s film has made a whopping 2.2 billion globally as the #3 biggest movie ever, and even “Top Gun” is never going to catch that lofty total, without even taking into account inflation from 25 years earlier.

Paramount Pictures’s Top Gun: Maverick’s first-run release has surpassed Titanic‘s first-run release, 601.919M to 600.788M.

Top Gun: Maverick is the 12th movie in domestic box office history to cross that threshold and crosses that mark in 47 days. 2019’s Avengers: Endgame is the fastest grossing pic to 600M at ten days. Among pandemic fare, Spider-Man: No Way Home crossed the six-century mark in 17 days.

Titanic remains the highest grossing domestic movie in the studio’s 110-year history with its re-release grosses putting that James Cameron pic’s total cume at 659.3M.

Exclusive: WME has signed Eric Warren Singer, one of the screenwriters behind Paramount’s summer smash Top Gun: Maverick.

The Tom Cruise sequel nearly 30 years in the making hit theaters on May 27 and has thus far grossed over 907 million worldwide, registering as the highest grossing film of 2022. Singer shares screenplay credit on the Navy aviator action-drama with Ehren Kruger and Christopher McQuarrie, having worked from a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, which was based on characters created by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr.

Singer came to Top: Gun Maverick after collaborating with its director Joseph Kosinski on the critically acclaimed drama Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, which starred Josh Brolin, Miles Teller and Jeff Bridges. On Monday, Paramount Pictures celebrated its 357 million global box-office performance for “Top Gun: Maverick” — and faced a federal copyright lawsuit from the heirs of the late Ehud Yonay, author of the 1983 magazine story that inspired the original “Top Gun.”

Nearly four decades ago, Paramount secured rights to “Top Guns,” an article published in the May 1983 issue of the now-folded California magazine; Yonay received a writing credit for the article on the original 1986 film, with a screenplay by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr.

In 2018, Yonay’s heirs filed for what’s known as termination rights. So now they argue it is them — not Paramount — who currently owns the underlying rights to make any movies based on “Top Guns.” They claim Paramount didn’t ask for permission — or pay them to make “Maverick.”

Screenwriter Jack Epps Jr. took the assignment to write a movie called Top Gun in the mid-1980s for one reason: he wanted to fly in a fighter jet.

Paramount Pictures has been drawn into a potentially massive legal battle over the rights to Top Gun. According to a lawsuit filed on Monday in California federal court, the studio knew it didn’t have the rights to the sequel but forged ahead with production and distribution anyway.

The complaint was filed by Shosh and Yuval Yonay, the heirs to the author of the 1983 California magazine story, Ehud Yonay, entitled “Top Guns” that the original movie was based on. They are taking advantage of a provision in copyright law that allows authors to reclaim the rights to their works after waiting a period of time, typically 35 years. The clause has quickly become a massive thorn in the side of studios that face the prospect of losing franchise rights to many iconic works from the 1980s.
