What's it about?

The sketch series will focus on U.S. history, which is where the 44th president's expertise comes in. "President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America's 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion," HBO teases. "But then Larry David called."

The State of the Race

It really does not look like there will be much turnaround this year with the Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. ‘Hacks’ Creator and Star Says Kaitlin Olson Is the Only Other Cast Member Whose Role Was Written for Them
Image
According to Paul Downs, no other actress on television could possibly wear the shoes of Deborah “DJ” Vance Jr. besides Kaitlin Olson, and that's not just because they’re size 13.

On the critically beloved HBO comedy Hacks, no character has gone through more positive growth than DJ, the formerly drug addicted daughter of a legendary comedian who has spent the last four seasons finding her own identity and independence apart from her famous namesake. DJ is the heart of Hacks and Olson is the hit show's stand-out supporting star, but Olson’s stellar performance isn’t just the serendipitous result of the casting process that the rest of the Hacks squad went through.

In a recent talk with comedy veteran and Curb Your Enthusiasm star Susie Essman for Interview Magazine, Downs revealed that he hand-picked Olson to play DJ when he and his team first began writing the character. Fortunately for them,...

A New Function of Emmys FYC Events? Getting Real About Bringing Production Back to Los Angeles
Image
Far be it for us to start our look inside the lead-up to the 2025 Emmys on a depressing note, but much like how the Los Angeles wildfires were the elephant in the room during Oscar season, if a series was shot in LA has become a major talking point at for your consideration events.

Even before the fires, the organization FilmLA reported that filming in the city was at the lowest it had been in three decades (not counting the time the world was in lockdown due to Covid-19). And the number of productions has continued to plummet, even with the natural disasters only having a minimal impact on regional filming.

Keep in mind, even more so than the increasingly global Academy Awards, the Primetime Emmys are awards voted on by industry peers, with these FYC events happening mostly in Los Angeles and almost daily from March through June. So...

Sitcom Cast Departures That Didn’t Hurt the Show One Bit
Image
When Steve Carell left The Office, the show never recovered. And when Chelsea Peretti left Brooklyn 99, a critical part of its cast’s dynamic was lost, which cost the show some of its edge. Usually, when a sitcom loses a character, no matter the reason, the show suffers. Sometimes, however, a departure is more akin to when a butcher trims the fat; the show is tightened up and, because time is no longer wasted on them, it’s an overall improved result, if anyone even notices at all.

Here are five such times where a character was removed from a sitcom, arguably for the better…

1 Mark Brendanawicz on ‘Parks and Recreation’

While actor Paul Schneider didn’t do anything wrong as the character Mark Brendanawicz on Parks and Recreation, he was meant to be a love interest for Leslie Knope, yet there was absolutely no chemistry between them. And...

Five Times Athletes Guest-Starred on a Sitcom and Couldn’t Act to Save Their Lives
Image
When a professional athlete is the special guest star of a sitcom, it’s almost always a strikeout/fumble/missed shot. Some sports fans might be so charmed by a player’s athletic prowess that they can overlook it, but a swole dude awkwardly waiting for his cue and then reciting a line with a delivery more wooden than a baseball bat is usually unwatchable.

You can find examples of this in almost every long-running sitcom, but these are five of the most egregious…

5 Bill Buckner on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’

The most infamous moment of first baseman Bill Buckner’s baseball career was when a ground ball went through his legs during a pivotal moment of the 1986 World Series. That moment became the central joke in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm Buckner guest-starred in: He misses a couple of things Larry tosses to him, but at the end, he...

Joy Behar reveals surprise match up with Whoopi Goldberg away from The View
Image
Joy Behar announced an exciting collaboration with her good friend, Whoopi Goldberg, and this time, it has nothing to do with The View.

Joy Behar’s schedule stays full even when she isn’t on The View as a cohost or moderating when Whoopi is off, even with the addition of moderating The Weekend View.

Joy loves to write plays in her spare time, and her latest, My First Ex-Husband, is currently playing on Off-Broadway.

Joy spent so much time playing her part that she got sick and was away from her seat on The View for an extended time after covering for Whoopi.

Now, it seems that Whoopi may be paying her friend, Joy, back after all that by joining her for a special one-time-only event.

Joy’s play, My First Ex-Husband, features a rotating cast including Susan Lucci, Susie Essman, Adrienne C. Moore, and now, Whoopi Goldberg is appearing in the show.

The ‘Filthy’ Performance That Secured Susie Essman’s Role in ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’
Image
Curb Your Enthusiasm just wouldn’t have been the same without Susie Greene, the foul-mouthed kaftan entrepreneur who won’t hesitate to loudly put Larry David in his place — which the real Larry loves, apparently.

Susie Greene is, of course, played by comedian Susie Essman, who seems very kind in real life. It’s hard to imagine her ever calling anybody a “fat fuck” or a “bald piece of shit.” So why was she cast as Curb’s biggest vulgarian?

While Essman knew David from back in their 1980s stand-up comedy days, it wasn’t until a specific performance in 1999 that the Seinfeld co-creator realized that she would be perfect for the role of Jeff’s rage-prone wife.

Essman recently guested on Ted Danson’s podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name. Obviously the two worked together on Curb, but as Essman told Danson, the interview finally gave them an opportunity...

Joy Behar Tells Story Of Losing Cell Phone

'Curb Your Enthusiasm' Star Ted Danson Thought It "Sucked" When He Saw It
Image
Earlier this year, fans said farewell to HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm after 12 epic seasons that never failed to make us laugh. Beginning in 1999, the series starred the outrageous Larry David as a fictionalized version of himself (or was it?) who got into all sorts of trouble thanks to his lack of filter and social manners. Along the way, we were treated to wonderful performances from the likes of J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, and, of course, Ted Danson, who – in all honesty – thought the show "sucked" when he first saw it.

Speaking with Smoove on his podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name (seen below), Danson revealed that when he first watched the pilot episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm with his wife, Mary Steenburgen, he didn’t get it. "I thought it sucked," he said. "I felt sorry for my new friend, Larry David." As such, the Cheers star...

35 Longest-Running TV Shows Ever, Ranked By Duration
Image
Longevity is something most small-screen series aspire to, and the longest-running TV shows ever have racked up an incredible number of years on the air to hold the claim. Some shows have been running so long that they're enjoyed by multiple generations of the same family. For any show released in the last year to stand a chance of making the list, it'd have to stay on-air until the 2050s. From children’s shows to daytime television, there are plenty of examples of series that have kept running through the decades, becoming TV icons in their own right.

The question of what is the longest TV show depends largely on which types of shows are included. Many news and sports programs, such as Meet the Press or Monday Night Football, have run for decades. However, they could also go on indefinitely, so they aren't the same as scripted programs, ranked...

Curb Your Enthusiasm Is Now the Most Snubbed Comedy in Emmys History
Image
When the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards concluded on September 15, 2024, Curb Your Enthusiasm again walked away empty-handed. The long-running HBO sitcom created by and starring Larry David has become the most-snubbed TV comedy in history, winning just two Primetime Emmys out of 55 nominations between 2002 and 2024. For one of the most beloved TV shows on air over the past two decades, walking away without a single Primetime award following its 12th and final season is a giant slap in the face.

While many fans and industry pundits believed Curb Your Enthusiasm had a legitimate shot of winning Best Comedy Series following its series send-off in April 2024, the dark showbiz series Hacks walked away with the honor. For a popular show that has been on the air for 25 years and garnered positive reception from critics and TV lovers alike, the Curb Your Enthusiasm Emmy snub is one of the biggest TV injustices of the 21st century.
