Paul Etheredge

The Other Review: An Unflinching Portrait of Grief
Image
A pristine modern home becomes the stage for a uniquely American nightmare in Paul Etheredge’s The Other. The film opens on a familiar portrait: Robyn (Olivia Macklin) and Daniel (Dylan McTee) are a well-meaning couple attempting to build a family after years of struggle with infertility.

Their solution is to foster Kathelia (Avangeline Friedlander), an eight-year-old girl rendered mute by a devastating family tragedy. The film quickly establishes an unsettling atmosphere, where the quiet corridors of their house seem to hold as many secrets as the silent child they have welcomed.

What begins as a domestic drama about the challenges of adoption soon curdles into something far more sinister. The central question is not simply what happened to Kathelia’s family, but what unseen force is now taking root in this new one. The film uses the supernatural to probe the anxieties simmering just beneath the surface of suburban life.

The Other Movie Ending Explained & Spoilers: Does Kathelia Kill Her Unborn Sister?
Image
Adopting kids is probably one of the noblest things humans do, even if it comes from selfish reasons. It’s still a messy, deeply human choice to open your life up to someone who needs it. Paul Etheredge’s latest psychological horror, The Other, is made on a shoestring budget with a local crew, yet the end result is a modest, effective film that knows exactly when, and how, to genuinely creep you out. The lore is simple enough, yet the plot never feels predictable, revealing its hand at just the right moments. With a tight runtime and surprisingly seamless performances from the cast, The Other defies the harsh reviews you might come across online. If you’re a horror fan, this one deserves a spot on your watchlist.

Spoilers Ahead

What happens in the film?

Daniel and Robin are your average young White couple, but in the best way possible—neurotypical,...

This Bloody '00s Slasher Was a Major First for the Horror Genre
Image
The horror genre has always been a home for marginalized audiences; viewers who find comfort in the movies that the mainstream media often dismissed as "too different to be good." It's why the medium has become such a fan-favorite for underserved communities even though it hasn't always shown them the same love back. Whether it be race, sexuality, or gender, horror has a sordid history of perpetuating stereotypes rather than amplifying these underserved voices, with films like 2004's Hellbent, directed by Paul Etheredge, trying to remedy this decades-long issue. The movie made history by premiering as the first truly gay slasher, focusing on a group of gay men trying to survive a masked killer as they get ready for a West Hollywood Halloween party. It follows the typical plotting of a slasher, but injects this traditional setup with its own special flair; it utilizes the creators' deep understanding of LGBTQ...

Olivia Macklin, Dylan McTee and Shawnee Smith Join Paul Etheredge’s ‘Psychopomp’ (Exclusive)
Image
Olivia Macklin and Dylan McTee are set to lead Paul Etheredge’s paranormal parenting thriller “Psychopomp” alongside Shawnee Smith, Avangeline Friedlander and Lily D. Moore.

The horror will spotlight Macklin and McTee as a couple who foster a “mute orphan” (portrayed by Friedlander). The child, however, has endured a calamitous past that will haunt the family.

“This act of love turns to horror when they find themselves besieged by a terrifying entity intent on destroying this newfound family from within,” reads the film’s official logline.

Macklin is best known for her role as Madre in the television miniseries “The Young Pope.” Additionally, she has starred in “Pretty Smart” and “Christmas Always Finds Its Way.” She’ll be seen next in Richard Lagravense’s “A Family Affair” led by Joey King, Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron.

McTee hails from Mike Pr. Nelson’s “Wrong Turn” and the TV series “Roswell,...

Zoe Bell Stares Us Down in the Latest Raze Poster
Watching Zoe Bell punch, kick, and fight her way through action-packed motion pictures is always a certified cinematic blast. Since I’ll probably never get a proper follow-up to director Paul Etheredge’s 2009 effort “Angel of Death,” I’ll just have to settle for Josh C. Waller’s female fight flick “Raze.” That’s not necessarily a bad thing, mind you. If you’ve seen the trailer for the flick, then you already know what to expect from this thing. A group of women are abducted and forced to fight one another with their bare hands. It’s billed as an action/horror hybrid, though I’m sure there’s certain guys out there who will turn this endeavor into a full-on fap fest. Don’t look at me like that. There are dudes in this world who think female-oriented Mma matches are better than porn. I know I’m gross.

Interview with Mark Bessenger of Bite Marks starring Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night)
Mark Bessenger Hey horror fans. Remember how we've all been complaining about an array of lifeless horror film remakes and bland horror film concepts? So when something comes along that tries to give us something different, something edgy, we should be out there supporting it, right? ....Well Bite Marks starring Windham Beacham, Benjamin Lutz, David Alanson and Stephen Geoffreys, is that film! Bite Marks deals with a truck driver and a gay couple who must fight off a pack of blood thirsty vampires after their truck breaks down in the middle of a lumber yard and it turns out their cargo is a coffin carrying vamps. What makes Bite Marks different is its humor, the way that its characters develop, the merger of horror/comedy/gay indie film, etc. You're probably saying to yourself though "but that's the gay vampire film?". Gay, straight, black, white, low budget, big budget -...

Gay Of The Dead 14: Final Destination and Day Of The Dead screenwriter, Jeffrey Reddick
One of the nice things about being a gay horror filmmaker is, after you hang around awhile, you realize you’re part of a nice little club. And eventually, it feels like you all know each other.

I first met Jeffrey Reddick at a cast and crew screening of one of my films. Paul (Hellbent) Etheredge-Ouzts brought his friend “Jeffrey” to the screening, and we chit-chatted a bit afterward. On the way home my brain added up all the stuff we talked about, and suddenly it clicked—Was that the writer of Final Destination?

Since then we’ve become friends and, in the grand tradition of Hollywood, mainly see each other at screenings and conventions. He’s a busy guy, and kinda sorta has that career that many of us indie flick filmmakers dream of—access to the people who make it happen, and big(ger) budgets.

Jeffrey and I...

‘Angel of Death’ Trailer Posted, Zoe Bell’s Mojo Risin’
Zoe Bell is about to take front and center of a few million LCD screens this February. And it's about time. We have to admit we've been looking forward to this trailer (above) since we took a visit to the set of Crackle's new action thriller web series Angel of Death, which stars the New Zealand stuntwoman-actress (Bell) as Eve, a vengeful assassin out to "right the wrongs" of all those vicious cold-hearted hits. That's all after a near-death wound to the head delivers visions of her past victims. Really? Well, thankfully comic mastermind Ed Brubaker, known for his gritty crime fiction (and a couple of Eisner Awards), wrote the series and will most likely keep it out of the ridiculous bin. Bell, of course is the longtime stuntwoman for former Xena star Lucy Lawless, who co-stars as Bell's weary neighbor Vera. Rounding out the cast are Doug Jones, Ted Raimi...
