Nearly a decade after helming Friday the 13th, director Sean S. Cunningham plunged into aquatic horror with DeepStar Six.

The 1989 film is coming to 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on June 17 from Kino Lorber. It’s been newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative with Dolby Vision/Hdr.

Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the deep sea horror film DeepStar Six. The 1989 movie will now be getting a new 4K Blu-ray release, according to Blu-ray.com. Kino Lorber is behind this physical media distribution. The movie stars Taurean Blacque, Nancy Everhard, Greg Evigan, Miguel Ferrer, and Nia Peeples. DeepStar Six is set to hit retailers on June 17.

The description reads,

Not All Aliens Come From Space! Far below the surface of the unforgiving sea, the daring crew of DeepStar Six are explorers in a forbidding world of impenetrable darkness and unimaginable pressure. They have invaded the icy fathoms into which no human has ever ventured. Their mission is to establish a top secret Navy base on the ocean floor.

Fans of Marvel’s new series, Daredevil: Born Again, should check out this other action-filled adaptation of a comic book legend. The Punisher, released in 1989, starred Dolph Lundgren as the police officer turned vigilante in a troubled film that has been hailed as one of the most honest adaptions of the character. Scorned by critics and early audiences, The Punisher has managed to gain quite an impressive following in the years after its release. And now, thanks to Tubi, the film is getting ready to meet a whole new audience… for free.

The Punisher stars Lundgren as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. After an attack leaves his family dead and the wounded cop presumed the same, Castle turns vigilante as he ignites a mafia war and tracks down the people who killed his family. What starts as a revenge story turns into a battle crisis as a new enemy arises...

Before the blockbuster behemoth that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic book movies were pretty few and far between. Not only that, but they were a seriously mixed bag (even more so than now), often straying far from the source material. To remind comic book fans of how things used to be, the 1989 Marvel effort The Punisher – which finds action icon Dolph Lundgren in the title role – has set its sights on free streaming.

Directed by Mark Goldblatt and, of course, loosely based on the Marvel Comics' character of the same name, The Punisher stars Dolph Lundgren as Frank Castle who, in this version, is a police officer who embarks on a deadly one-man war against crime after his family is murdered. So, at least some of the elements are still in place.

Released in 1989 and often compared to its fellow ’89 release Leviathan (which has also gotten the Black Sheep treatment), DeepStar Six was scripted Geoff Miller and Lewis Abernathy – which is interesting because movies like Leviathan and DeepStar Six exist because James Cameron’s The Abyss was coming out the same year, and Abernathy and Cameron are pals. Abernathy even had an acting role in Titanic.

This big, expensive and well-produced action-suspense Sci-fi epic mostly delivers on its promise to be Aliens at the bottom of the sea. At heart it’s a 1950s pulse-pounder with a bigger monster, a zillion times the budget and a script that does everything but make us care. We appreciate the likable characters but it’s too easy to predict who will ‘get it’ next. The realism factor is not bad at all, although the undersea explorer video training sessions should have given ‘how not to crack up under stress’ more emphasis. And can’t anybody properly mind those pesky nuclear bombs?

While it may not be Friday, there is still plenty to celebrate this Tuesday the 13th, as we prepare to head back to Camp Crystal Lake with Scream Factory’s impressive Friday the 13th Collection, which brings together all the films from the original franchise, as well as the remake and Freddy vs. Jason as well. Scream Factory also put together a Blu-ray release of one of the most seminal films from my childhood this week—Terror in the Aisles—and they even are giving Motel Hell the Steelbook treatment on Tuesday as well.

Kino Lorber is also keeping busy this week with their special edition Blu for DeepStar Six as well as a SteelBook for Rawhead Rex, and for those of you who dig on The Exorcist sequels, both Dominion and Exorcist: The Beginning come home on Blu-ray this Tuesday, courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
