‘Geek Girl’ Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix After Delay
Image
This is news that likely few were expecting by now — Netflix has picked up a second season of British-Canadian coming-of-age series Geek Girl, starring Emily Carey. That is because the renewal comes exactly 11 months after the show’s May 30, 2024 debut. Shooting will begin in the UK this summer for a 2026 debut.

The half-hour series, based on the popular YA novels by Holly Smale, had made a strong case for renewal by spending four weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at #2, reaching the Top 10 in 89 countries and amassing 28.1M views in its first seven months of release. The solid performance, coupled with a pretty modest budget and positive reviews from critics should’ve translated into a quick renewal.

So why the unusually long delay then?

A change in the series’ production credits may provide a clue. Season 1 was produced and distributed by Canada’s troubled Corus Entertainment through subsidiaries.

Who Is Hebe Beardsall from Geek Girl? Harry Potter Actress Stars in New Netflix Teen Drama - Main Image

Who is Hebe Beardsall in Geek Girl on Netflix? The blonde recruiter is part of the duo who turned Harriet Manners into a bona fide model for their runway show, but where else have we seen the actress before the teen drama series?

As a worker on Wilbur's side, Beardsall's character, Betty, plays a bigger part in the series than you realize.

Getting to Know Betty in Geek Girl

Hebe Beardsall is Betty in the eight-episode Netflix series Geek Girl. She's the short-haired blonde girl who always tags alongside Wilbur Evans (played by Emmanuel Imani) aka Harriet's agent and mentor in the fashion world.

Betty is Wilbur's meek assistant, righthand woman, and friend who helped him look for the 'perfect' model to add to their roster for the show.

‘Geek Girl’ Netflix Review: A Coming-Of-Age Show That’s Overwhelmingly Optimistic
Image
I don’t generally intertwine my two jobs as a hustling Gen-Zer who is incapable of keeping her life together, but I’m making an exception for Geek Girl because it’s a show that centers on the fashion industry. An industry that is so remarkably unforgiving that I had to immediately leave my brain behind while watching Geek Girl. It’s how some of us felt after watching Emily in Paris. Nobody has it that easy, and nobody is going to be handing things to you on a platter that way. Geek Girl tells the story of Harriet Manners, a high schooler, whose life suddenly changes when she happens to be at London Fashion Week, thanks to her class winning a competition. She’s scouted by one of the industry’s biggest agencies and then taken on a journey into the world of all things fashion. Adapted from the best-selling novels by Holly Smale,...

‘Geek Girl’ Recap (Episodes 1-10) Explained: What Happens To Nick And Harriet?
Image
From a geek girl to a fashion model, Harriet Manners’ life changed all of a sudden when she was spotted by a modeling agent at London Fashion Week. Geek Girl pretty much follows the Princess Diaries character arc—from being bullied at school to being celebrated by the world. Harriet, a neurodivergent teenager, struggled with her social life, but thankfully she had Nat, her best friend, by her side to support her. The school bully, Lexi, and her minions had crushed Harriet’s self-esteem, and as a result, she preferred hiding away from any form of attention. One wrong move and Harriet always ended up becoming the joke of the school. Harriet was not expecting her life to change after the London Fashion Week because making it big in the fashion industry was Nat’s dream and not hers. But life had other plans for Harriet, and soon it turned into a journey of self-discovery.

‘Geek Girl’ Review: Emily Carey Shines in Netflix’s Wholesome YA Fashion Comedy
Image
One of the trickiest aspects of HBO’s House of the Dragon was the way viewers spent roughly half of the drama’s first season with “younger” versions of our two heroines — Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower — before a time jump brought longer-term stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke to the screen.

That put a lot of pressure on Milly Alcock and Emily Carey to anchor those initial episodes, which they did extremely well. Alcock had the greater visibility, quickly becoming a red carpet favorite and setting herself up for the opportunity to play Supergirl. Carey’s first major House of the Dragon follow-up, Netflix’s adaptation of Holly Smale’s coming-of-age Geek Girl series, isn’t as high profile as joining DC’s House of Zor-El, but it’s a solid showcase for its 21-year-old star.

Geek Girl is a likably wholesome, generally low-stakes YA fairy tale — references to...
