All 5 Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott Movies, Ranked
Image
Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott’s collaborations are almost entirely contained to a single decade: the 2000s. The first four of these films made together came out between 2000 and 2008, and then their fifth, was released in 2010. It’s safe to call Crowe one of Scott’s most well-known collaborators, though the actor who’s actually appeared in the most Ridley Scott movies out of anyone is Scott’s wife, Giannina Facio.

All 9 Deaths In Gladiator 2 Explained
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Gladiator II.

Gladiator II is even bloodier than its predecessor, as nearly every major character dies in the sequel. Gladiator's ending features the death of Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) and Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), with Maximus' death and his legacy continuing to loom over the events and characters in Gladiator II. The original Gladiator also includes the deaths of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), Antonius Proximo (Oliver Reed), Maximus' wife (Giannina Facio), and Maximus' son (Giorgio Cantarini).

Between General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) and his troops invading Numidia, the bloodshed during the gladiator games in the Colosseum, and the backstabbing conducted by Macrinus (Denzel Washington), there is copious bloodshed throughout the story and during Gladiator II's ending. Lucius Verus Aurelius (Paul Mescal) is one of the few prominent characters to survive the sequel. While many characters die in Gladiator II, this list...

Everything to Remember About 'Gladiator' Before Watching the Sequel
Image
Spoiler Alert: Spoilers follow for the original GladiatorWere (hopefully) about to be entertained once again. Ridley Scotts long-awaited Gladiator II finally hits theaters next weekend, and if early buzz is to be trusted, viewers should expect another hugely engaging round of brutal combat and immaculately constructed setpieces. For a long time, viewers had no idea how Scott could possibly continue the 2000 Best Picture winning original, given that it ends with the lead characters death. But recent trailers have given us a better idea of Scotts vision for a legacy sequel (even if it does admittedly raise questions about whether hes retconning the first one).

With the new installment less than a week away, film junkies are understandably in a mad rush to rewatch the first Gladiator before seeing the sequel. But obviously, not everyone has the time to do so, plus theres an entire generation of people who missed seeing the original in theaters.

Gladiator Streaming for Free Ahead of Sequel's Release, Cracks Viewership Top 10 Chart
Image
Ridley Scotts epic film Gladiator (2000) is widely considered one of the greatest sword and sandal period dramas. The film is, after 24 years, getting a well-deserved sequel. Now, fans who want to brush up on the original can watch it for free on the Roku Channel. The Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix historical tale has even cracked a list of the Top 10 movies across all streaming platforms, landing at No. 10 per Reelgood.

Gladiator won five Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture. It's the tale of Commodus (Phoenix) who takes power and rank from Maximus (Crowe) who is then doomed to fight to the death in gladiator arenas.

The sequel, Gladiator II, over two decades coming, will be released in the United States on Nov. 22. It stars Paul Mescal as the son of Crowes Maximus and Connie Nielsens Lucilla. Gladiator II is directed by Scott with the screenplay written by David Scarpa and...

Ridley Scott Recalls Joaquin Phoenix Nearly Quitting Gladiator, Reveals Russell Crowe's ReactionRidley Scott Recalls Joaquin Phoenix Nearly Quitting Gladiator, Reveals Russell Crowe's Reaction
Image
Joaquin Phoenix is widely considered one of the best actors of this generation and the Academy Awards recognized his talent when they awarded him the Best Actor award for 2019's Joker. However, the actor has been surrounded by controversies about wanting to leave projects ahead of filming.

This year, Phoenix left Todd Haynes' yet-untitled gay romance film five days before the film was supposed to start filming, and the film was ultimately scrapped. While the move shocked the people involved in the project, it turns out he's been trying to get out of projects for a long time. In a new interview with The New York Times, legendary director Ridley Scott revealed he also tried to get out of his role in 2000's Gladiator.

Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon’ World Premieres in Paris With Joaquin Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby
Image
Holding the world premiere of Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” in Paris was a no-brainer for Sony’s motion picture group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, due to the film’s French DNA and its subject, the famous French emperor (played by Joaquin Phoenix).

“Where else could you begin the worldwide rollout of ‘Napoleon’ than France?,” said Rothman on the red carpet of the event at the Salle Pleyel concert hall, where Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby and Tahar Rahim were able to attend thanks to the end of the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike.

But the French theatrical bow comes with a downside for Apple, which financed the pricey movie and will now have to wait 17 months to launch the movie on its service due to France’s strict windowing rules.

“It’s a great credit to Apple who made the film because this particular movie (…) is a big screen experience,” said Rothman. “It...

Paramount Plus Banner Title ‘Bose’ Wraps Production, Unveils Further Key Cast (Exclusive)
Image
“Bosé,” the highly anticipated Paramount Plus Original, has wrapped production. The announcement comes as Paramount Plus has also confirmed the remainder of the internationally recognised cast of the six-part series, a biopic of Spanish singer-songwriter Miguel Bosé.

Two behind-the-scenes images, shared in exclusivity with Variety, also hint at the production ambitions of the series, one of the biggest Spanish-language series to date at Paramount Plus, which turns on one of the most resonant figures in recent times in Spain. Resonant for his hits, which span a remarkably long six-decade career, and for his life story, which charts Spain’s emergence from more oppressive times to hard-won freedoms in democracy.

Produced by Vis, a division of Paramount, in collaboration with Shine Iberia, part of Banijay Iberia, Pepe Baston’s Elefantec Global and Legacy Rock, “Bosé” will premiere exclusively on the Paramount Plus International streaming service in the coming months, Paramount Plus also confirmed Tuesday.

Crafting Lady Gaga’s ‘House of Gucci’ Rise and Fall Through Costumes
Image
Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with United Artists Releasing, for this edition we look at how “House of Gucci” costume designer Janty Yates tackled the behind the scenes world of one of the biggest brands in fashion.

Costume designer Janty Yates has been one of director Ridley Scott’s most trusted collaborators for over 20 years — they’ve done 14 films together since Yates’ Oscar-winning work on “Gladiator” in 2000 — but Yates never takes the partnership for granted. “I’m always so incredibly grateful to be asked,” Yates told IndieWire in a recent interview. “I never, ever assume that I’m going to do the next one.” Yates and Scott’s most recent project, “House of Gucci,” had been on Yates’ radar for decades thanks to her close relationship with Scott and his wife Giannina Facio,...

Zoë Kravitz Teases That Robert Pattinson’s Batman Transformation Is ‘Out of This World’
Image
Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”

Zoë Kravitz says she has “seen a little” of “The Batman.” Of course, she’s not allowed to say too much, but Kravitz, who stars as Catwoman in the upcoming DC film, says of Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, “Rob is perfect for this role. He was incredible. His transformation was out of this world.” She added, “[Director] Matt Reeves has a lot of heart, and he cares so much for these characters. I’m just very excited for him to be able to go on vacation because he deserves it. I hope the fans love it because we put a lot of work into this.”

…

When Wesley Snipes was first approached about co-starring in Netflix’s new limited dramatic thriller series “True Story,” he thought producers wanted him for Kevin Hart’s role: a famous Hollywood comedian whose life unravels when...

Lady Gaga and Jared Leto Talk Their ‘House of Gucci’ Transformations: ‘It Was An Immersive Experience’
Image
Father, son and house of Gaga. Method acting aside, Lady Gaga worked through both a physical and mental transformation to play her character inspired by the real-life Patrizia Reggiani.

“I’d say truly the most challenging part was playing a murderer,” Gaga told Variety’s Marc Malkin at the red carpet premiere of the film at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles. “But I will say that after a lot of research, I realized that she knows that she made a big mistake, and it was a lot of trauma that drove her towards this huge mistake that I know she regrets. So when you go see ‘House of Gucci,’ you will not watch a movie about some sexy, gold-digging murderess. You will watch a real woman fall in love and fall apart.”

Jared Leto, who plays Paolo Gucci, has drawn attention for his particularly dramatic physical transformation.

“The most important thing is the heart,...

Ridley Scott Won’t Let Age Or Pandemic Slow A Storytelling Appetite That Brought ‘House of Gucci’ & ‘The Last Duel;’ Napoleon & More ‘Gladiator’ Up Next
Image
Exclusive: As his House of Gucci cast premiered the awards season entry in Europe in concert with the 100th anniversary celebration of the fashion brand, Ridley Scott stayed back in Los Angeles. Glimpsed through the limited lens of a Zoom call, Scott obviously lives well. But he’s quick to say that where he’d rather be is the getaway home in France where he suddenly finds himself at the center of a fledgling winemaking business that manufactured its first batch of reds and roses from grapes grown on his estate in Provence. He shares the place with wife Giannina Facio, a driving force as producer on House of Gucci along with Scott, Kevin Walsh and Mark Huffam. And you might remember her as Maximus’ wife in those Gladiator flashbacks as Russell Crowe’s character was dying.

Gucci Heir Says ‘House of Gucci’ Film Is ‘Stealing the Identity of a Family’
Image
The Gucci family is not happy with Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” film.

Patrizia Gucci, who is the great-grandchild of Guccio Gucci, told the Associated Press that she is worried the film “goes beyond the headline-grabbing true-crime story and pries into the private lives of the Guccio Gucci heirs.”

“We are truly disappointed,” Gucci told AP on Wednesday. “I speak on behalf of the family. They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system… Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything. But there is a borderline that cannot be crossed.”

“House of Gucci” follows the real-life murder of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), the former head of the Gucci fashion house, who was shot dead in 1995 by a hitman in Milan. His former wife, Patrizia (Lady Gaga), was convicted of arranging his murder in 1998. She...

Will Smith in Concussion (2015)
Sony Pictures announced today that it has scheduled the Will Smith drama Concussion for a Christmas Day release. The film is opening at a prime time, not only because of the holiday movie season but also just as the NFL will be preparing for the playoffs. In his search for the truth, Omalu, a total outsider to pro football, takes on the sports industry’s status quo. Ridley Scott, Giannina Facio, David Wolthoff, Larry Shuman, and Elizabeth Cantillon are producing the film which starts production in a few weeks. Albert Brooks Joins Will Smith in NFL Concussion Drama
Albert Brooks
Albert Brooks is in talks to star alongside Will Smith and Alec Baldwin in Sony's Untitled Football Project, with Gugu Mbatha-Raw just closing a deal to join the cast as well.

The project is based on the GQ article Game Brain by Jeanne Marie Laskas, which follows Dr. Bennett Omalu as he became the first doctor to find chronic traumatic encephalopathy (Cte) in an NFL player, and brought his discovery to the public's attention.

The project is said to be in the same vein of whistleblower dramas such as The Insider, examining the long-term effects of suffering several concussions throughout a playing career, along with the corporate, cultural and political interest that help fuel the popular sport. No details were given for Albert Brooks and Gugu Mbatha-Raw's characters.

Peter Landesman is directing from his own adapted screenplay, with Ridley Scott, Giannina Facio, Michael Schaefer and Larry Shuman set to produce.

Ridley Scott Gets The Devil In The Kitchen
When chef Marco Pierre White published his autobiography in 2006, his infamously tumultuous life was guaranteed to be a dramatic read. Originally titled White Slave, the book was released in America under the new moniker, The Devil In The Kitchen, and readers were not disappointed. Now, it seems the story of the man widely regarded as the first ‘celebrity chef’ may be headed for the screen, as Ridley Scott, Giannina Facio and Colet Abedi have optioned the work for development.

Following the man from his humble and tragic beginnings in Leeds, UK, to the height of fame and fortune at the centre of London’s restaurant scene, The Devil In The Kitchen depicts the genesis of “the godfather of modern cooking.” Earning his stripes from some of the best chefs in the country, such as Albert Roux and Raymond Blanc, White himself would go on to train Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal,...

The memoir focuses on White's tumultuous early years and his success as a chef in 1980s London.

The 52-year-old - who trained Gordon Ramsay - was the first and youngest chef to win three Michelin stars. He has appeared on cooking shows like Hell's Kitchen, MasterChef and Marco Pierre White's Kitchen Wars.

Ridley Scott Options Raucous Chef Marco Pierre White's Memoir The Devil In The Kitchen
It.s no secret that we.re huge fans of Jon Favreau.s Chef around these parts, which means we.re not at all surprised that chef movies are on the rise - though maybe from places we didn.t expect. Blockbuster filmmaker Ridley Scott has teamed up with his oft-collaborative actress Giannina Facio and Iranian screenwriter Colet Abedi (Fashion House) in optioning The Devil in the Kitchen, the excellent memoir from the original culinary genius asshole Marco Pierre White. If you.ve read The Devil in the Kitchen, or if you keep up with world-renowned chefs in general, you.re aware of Marco Pierre White. In 1994, he became (at 33) the then-youngest chef to earn 3 Michelin stars, arguably the highest honor in the land. This was done by dedicating a large portion of his life to the kitchen, where he often turned boys into men in a sense, while holding...

Ridley Scott Options The Devil In The Kitchen
Ridley Scott
Ridley Scott always has so many projects bubbling away in his development kitchen that it’s a wonder he has time to monitor them all. Still, that’s what a production company like Scott Free is for. The delivery truck has backed up to the loading bay, bringing yet another new possibility: Marco Pierre White’s memoir The Devil In The Kitchen: Sex, Pain, Madness And The Making Of A Great Chef.Scott has splashed some cash alongside fellow producers Giannina Facio and Colet Abedi to buy the rights to White’s tome, which somewhat unsurprisingly, chronicles his rise to become one of the pioneers of the celebrity chef archetype. It has all the usual ingredients: a riotous childhood, rock star status in the 1980s kitchen scene bristling with other trendy types and his work training the likes of Mario Batali and Gordon Ramsay. Oh, and the fact that he...

Will Smith To Star In Ridley Scott-Produced NFL Concussion Project
When a slot suddenly opens up in the schedule of mega star Will Smith, it is pretty big news in Tinseltown. Now that the actor has exited Julius Onah’s Brilliance, his schedule window may soon be filled with the upcoming, untitled drama being produced by Ridley Scott – exploring the issue of brain trauma in American Football.

It all starts with Sony, who have the rights to a GQ article titled ‘Brain Game,’ written by Jeanne Marie Laskas. Passionate about the subject, Ridley Scott originally intended to direct the film, but will now stick to producing it, with Peter Landesman (Parkland) attached as writer and director. Scott has been developing the project along with his producing partner, Giannina Facio, and with Landesman having completed the script, cameras look set to roll before the end of the year.

Intended as a ‘whistleblower’ type of story, the project follows Dr. Bennet Omalu...

Will Smith Joins NFL Concussion Drama for Producer Ridley Scott
Ridley Scott
Will Smith is in talks to star in an untitled drama for producer Ridley Scott, which examines the NFL's concussion issues.

If a deal becomes finalized, the actor will portray Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic neuropathologist who, in 2002, was the first doctor to discover chronic traumatic encephalopathy (Cte) in the brain of a professional football player, and made the public aware of the condition. The plot is described as a whistleblower tale in the same vein as The Insider, which explores the traumatic price that athletes pay, along with the political, corporate and cultural interests that drive professional sports.

We first reported on this project back in November, when Ridley Scott signed on to write the script and direct, but now he will only be serving as producer. Peter Landesman (Parkland) is now directing and writing the script, based on the 2009 GQ article Game Brain by Jeanne Marie Laskas, which...

Will Smith at an event for Seven Pounds (2008)
Now that Will Smith has stepped off the pic Brilliance, the whole town is after him. I’m hearing he has aligned himself to that football concussions project that Ridley Scott and Giannina Facio have been developing. The pic, still untitled and inspired by the GQ article “Game Brain,” is at Sony, and Peter Landesman wrote the script and will direct. He made his helming debut on the JFK pic Parkland. Back when Deadline broke the story, Scott was looking to direct the concussions movie project after his massive Moses movie Exodus with Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton. Scott moved over and now will produce with Facio, along with Shuman Company’s David Wolfhoff and Larry Shuman. Landesman has completed the script, and the plan is to shoot this fall. Smith will play Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who was a total outsider and made the first discovery of Cte,...

Ridley Scott tackles ancient aliens with HBO's Pharaoh
Ridley Scott explored the extraterrestrial origins of man to, let's say, mixed results in Prometheus, and now he's continuing the trend with a television series that will contend aliens had a hand in the construction of Ancient Egypt. That sounds awesome. Even better: this series is for HBO. The show, entitled "Pharaoh", was created by David Schulner (executive producer on NBC's "Dracula" and "Do No Harm") along with Giannina Facio and Colet Abedi, while...

Ridley Scott Options Young Adult Fantasy Series Fae
The Hunger Games may be the only young adult fantasy series succeeding at the box office, but everyone is still eager to find its successor. Divergent comes out next year, and The Mortal Instruments has refused to die, so other book series with the basic plot of "teenage female protagonist attempts to save the world" have a reasonable chance to make it to the big screen. The latest contender is Fae, which has just been optioned by Ridley Scott. Per Deadline, "Protagonist Caroline Ellis reaches 16, a birthday that triggers the battle fated for centuries between the Dark and Light Fae, forcing her to confront who she is and discover whether her tumultuous relationship with Devilyn Reilly, who’s battling the power of the Dark within him, will destroy them both along with humanity." Kind of makes "Sweet 16" parties look even sillier by comparison. According to Deadline, Scott and Giannina Facio will produce the adaptation.

Isaiah Washington, Matthew Cherry Huddle On Football Concussion Pic
Ridley Scott
Exclusive: Isaiah Washington wants to follow his Blue Caprice turn as Beltway Sniper John Allen Muhammad by starring in Game Time Decision, an indie film by writer/director Matthew A. Cherry (The Last Fall) that tackles the provocative topic of concussion-related injuries in professional football players. Washington will be an executive producer on the film. They plan to start production next spring. Washington will play a retired professional football player suffering from a degenerative brain disease who attempts to reconnect with his estranged son to warn him about returning to play a game too soon after sustaining a concussion. Cherry is a former NFL wide receiver, and he and Washington want to highlight Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a condition which unfortunately is growing more prominent with the failing health and suicides of former gridiron greats. Just last week I revealed that Ridley Scott and Giannina Facio are interviewing A-list writers to...

Ridley Scott to Direct Football Concussion Film
Ridley Scott
No director likes to mix it up more than Ridley Scott, as evidenced by his plan to direct a sports drama about the "dangerous effects of concussions in football." Scott and his producing partner Giannina Facio are currently meeting with potential writers. If you could mathematically calculate a 180-degree difference between films, only then you could accurately describe the distance between a concussion movie and a movie in which Cameron Diaz has sex with a car. Or maybe not! Just because a movie involves traumatic brain injury doesn't mean it can't also be caliente.

Ridley Scott to Direct Drama Exploring Debilitating Effects of Concussions in Pro Football
While Ridley Scott is currently taking on the epic of all epics in his Moses movie, Exodus, he plans on following that up with a smaller picture focusing on a very different kind of human misery.  Scott is looking to bring the debilitating effects of sports concussions to light by directing a feature film that explores the life-changing injuries in the context of pro football.  He and and producing partner Giannina Facio have been meeting with top screenwriters for the project, which looks to be his next directorial effort after Exodus.  Hit the jump for more. Deadline reports that Scott "wants to create a drama focusing on the debilitating effects that concussions are having on our sports heroes, and the role that league owners play in allowing it to happen."  The plot would be a morality tale focusing on the occurrence of these injuries and the blind eyes turned by those in charge,...
