Where’s Dutch? John Hughes’s second best Thanksgiving movie is nowhere to be found
Image
John Hughes is responsible for the greatest Thanksgiving movie of all time, 1987’s poignant Planes, Trains & Automobiles. This Steve Martin and John Candy-led classic has become a perennial and a movie tons of folks have probably been revisiting this week. However, about four years later, in 1991, John Hughes made another Thanksgiving movie in the same vein, Dutch. Despite being a pretty solid movie with a very recognizable cast, it’s a hard movie to track down nowadays.

Dutch is very much in the vein of Planes, Trains & Automobiles in that it pairs a snooty, white-collar guy with a more down-to-earth, blue-collar kind of guy. The big twist here is that the white-collar guy is a kid, with Ethan Embry (then known as Ethan Randall) playing a prep-school kid who winds up on a long journey home for Thanksgiving with his mom’s new boyfriend, Dutch, played by Ed O’Neill.

Mark Blum died yesterday in New York at the age of 69 from coronavirus complications. He starred opposite Rosanna Arquette, Aidan Quinn, and Madonna in Susan Seidelman’s Desperately Seeking Susan and had a recurring role as the character Union Bob in the series Mozart In The Jungle, created by Roman Coppola, Alex Timbers, Paul Weitz, and Jason Schwartzman. His film work includes Peter Faiman’s Crocodile Dundee and he was a constant presence on the Off Broadway stage, in plays such as Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery.

Blum was the Director of the Uta Hagen Institute’s Hagen Core Training at Hb Studio. On Tuesday the theatre community lost four-time Tony Award winning playwright Terrence McNally to Covid-19.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio just announced at his press conference that there are now 21,873 coronavirus positives and 365 deaths reported in the city.

Over the course of the interview, Hogan recalled how he met his first wife Noelene Edwards while working as a lifeguard at a swimming pool.

The two married in 1958 and separated in 1981, but reconciled in 1982 when they remarried. They stayed together until 1990.

Rewatching classic Australian films: Crocodile Dundee
The most commercially successful Australian film in history may linger fondly in the memory, but it plays awkwardly now

Its been almost three decades since Paul shrimp on the barbie Hogan first doffed his iconic Akubra hat and graced the big screen, wrestling wild animals, sipping pots of beer and comparing knife sizes in the role that defined his career. But given the oafishness of his character, graced" hardly seems the right word.

Back in 1986, when Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee became a local and international box office sensation (the film that bears his name is to this day the most commercially successful Australian feature in history), Hogan and director Peter Faiman extracted laughs from the story of a Tarzan-like rube with a small brain, a big heart and a bigger knife.

"Dutch" Dooley Stands Out Among The Aristocrats
The Anchor Bay Entertainment re-release of director Peter Faiman's 1991 comedy-drama "Dutch", is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.

From writer/producer John Hughes, "Dutch" stars Ethan Randall, Ed O'Neill and JoBeth Williams, with a cameo appearance by golfer Arnold Palmer :

"...'Dutch Dooley' (O'Neill) attends a ritzy party with his girlfriend, 'Natalie Standish' (Williams), standing out terribly among the upper-class aristocrats -- wearing a cheap suit and telling boorish anecdotes.

"While there, he meets Natalie's snobbish, wealthy ex-husband 'Reed' (Christopher McDonald), who tells Natalie that he will have to break his Thanksgiving plans with their son 'Doyle' (Randall) for an unexpected business trip to London. He also threatens to strip Natalie of her custody of Doyle.

"Dutch overhears this in the background and subsequently looks out for both Natalie and Doyle..."
