Iranian-French performer Golshifteh Farahani accepted Locarno Film Festival’s Excellence Award Davide Campari on Wednesday night during the 78th edition’s opening ceremony in Switzerland, a celebration that set a reflective tone for the ten-day event. The honor, presented on the Piazza Grande, recognizes careers that shape contemporary cinema; recent laureates include Mélanie Laurent and Ethan Hawke.
In an emotional address Farahani called cinema “a refuge in this dark world,” dedicating the prize to “everyone searching for light,” and evoking the destruction still unfolding in Gaza. Festival artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro praised her “charismatic and multifaceted” work, saying her performances “leave a deep mark on the eyes and hearts of film lovers.”

Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani discussed having to leave Iran, her love for music, and her career, including her most recent role in Julia Ducournau’s Cannes Film Festival competition movie Alpha, during a public conversation at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland on Thursday.
She talked about shaving her head when growing up in Iran, including when she was 16, which allowed her to play sports with boys. “I had a double identity,” she said. “I was popular with the girls because I would give them the phone numbers of my friends. … The same boys I would play with in the evenings [as a boy] would whistle at me in the morning and not recognize me.”
She concluded: “I was playing with death. I was obliged to sacrifice my femininity in order to ride a bicycle.”

It was a very emotional Locarno opening night as Iranian female power, Gaza, and Armenia got the spotlight on the first night of the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival on Wednesday. Iran-born actress Golshifteh Farahani received a big and cordial Swiss welcome and the Excellence Award Davide Campari on the picturesque lakeside town’s Piazza Grande square. And in a special surprise, she was handed the award by fellow Iranian actress Zar Amir.
“I thought this prize should go to you, to all of us, to us, in this obscure, dark world,” Farahani told the Locarno crowd in an emotional acceptance speech. “We still believe in art and culture. We take refuge in cinema. We watch movies, movies in which everyone is included. We feel love, anger, jealousy, no matter which side of the frontier we live on, no matter which God we believe in, no matter where we pray,...

It’s recap time. With the Invasion Season 3 trailer out on the platforms, it’s time for a quick revision of the previous season, so we find it easy to catch up with the upcoming one.
Apple TV+ show’s Season 2 questioned the very purpose of the humanity-alien relationship and the fight thereafter. The ‘hive mind’ is not just a mere entity to deal with, and the season forced our heroes to be on the battlefield rather than hiding. With the trailer out, several notions build up the fact that Season 3 will be by far the most vulnerable, testing abilities, challenging the characters and putting a final showdown (maybe) for Invasion.
With the gloves off now for Season 3, let’s once look back and see what happened in Invasion Season 2 and how it sets the stage for the next season.

The Deauville American Film Festival is launching a new industry initiative designed to bridge the gap between the French and U.S. film sectors.
“Deauville has always been the leading European platform for American cinema,” says festival director Aude Hesbert. “But our industries operate in such different ways, and we rarely speak the same production language. With this new program, we want to turn the festival into a space for real dialogue and collaboration.”
Rather than introducing a traditional co-production market, the festival will host a focused one-day program of panels, case studies, and networking sessions on September 8, positioning Deauville as a key transatlantic meeting point.
The day will be split into two thematic sections. The morning – organized in collaboration with public institutions like the Cnc and major players such as Mediawan – will highlight the strengths of the French production ecosystem, with panels on international appeal and case studies of recent U.

It’s always a pain waiting for streaming shows. Just as we start to enjoy a season, we end up with just eight to 10 episodes and then a long hiatus. Invasion is no stranger to long breaks, with the first season dropping in October 2021 and then having to wait until August 2023 for season 2. The wait is almost over for Invasion season 3.
In a way, the wait has been about what we would usually expect. However, we did fear that this break would be longer, as there was so little news about it in the run-up to the summer, especially since we didn’t get a renewal until February 2024!

The Invasion season 3 premiere will air on Friday, Aug. 22, which almost matches the date for the second season. Only one episode will drop, which has become normal for Apple TV+ shows.

Julia Ducournau has turned 180 degrees since Titane, the gritty and bizarre thriller that Spike Lee’s Cannes jury awarded the Palme d’Or in 2021. There’s no doubt that all eyes are on her newest, Alpha, in a way they weren’t on Titane after Raw. Her first and most horrific film by a landslide (too much to ever gain a wide audience) was a cannibal movie about a teen girl starting veterinary school. Here, no bodies are eaten or impregnated by a fire-hood car. But almost everyone’s is crumbling.
Zoomed-out, this coming-of-age story explores 13-year-old Alpha (Mélissa Boros), her doctor mother (Golshifteh Farahani), the real-world horrors of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, and the pulpy disasters that follow Alpha’s use of a potentially infected needle for a house-party tattoo. The dusty parallel world Ducournau has fashioned is just real enough to be ours and just fantastical...

In the space of two years, French actor Tahar Rahim has transformed himself completely to inhabit a pair of drastically different characters, the iconic French-Armenian crooner Charles Aznavour, and Amine, a man engulfed in drug addiction who is dying of a mysterious disease.
The latter performance is the force behind Julia Ducournau’s allegorical drama “Alpha” which world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday evening and earned an 11-minute standing ovation.
Rahim, who saw his career explode 16 years after a breakthrough performance in Jacques Audiard’s Cannes prizewinning thriller “A Prophet,” had transformed himself before, notably in “The Serpent,” starring as the merciless serial killer Charles Sobhraj. But in “Alpha,” he went to the extreme, losing 20 kilos (44 pounds) for the part, so that he could relate to his onscreen character, Amine, on an emotional level, as well as physical.

I rarely allow myself to go into a major horror release fully blind. Such was the case with Palme d’Or winning director Julia Ducournau’s sophomore masterpiece Titane, a highly stylized and anguishing exercise in brutality and narrative experimentation. It turned out to be one of my favorite films of 2021. For Alpha, her third film, which screened in official competition at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, I also entered with little forewarning. This time, however, my lack of preparation only heightened the disappointment I felt in the face of the film’s clunky insensitivity, abrasive tone, and, at times, embarrassingly misjudged swings into body horror.
As with Ducournau’s previous work, Alpha is a punishing experience for the audience, but this time, there’s almost no reward for its relentlessness. If, in 2025, you’re going to exploit the AIDS epidemic, you had better have a compelling reason. Or, at the very least,...

Julia Ducournau’s Alpha, the follow-up to her Palme d’Or winner Titane, has landed with poor scores on Screen International’s Cannes jury grid.
With an average of 1.5, it is joint bottom alongside Ari Aster’s Eddington. It collected two zero-stars (bad) from Le Monde’s Mathieu Macharet and The Guardian’ s Peter Bradshaw, as well as four one-stars (poor) and four two-stars (average). Screen’s critic and Positif’s Nt Binh were the outliers, awarding it three-stars (good).

The movie Alpha seems like it’s going to be one of the most-talked about films to come out of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival this year!
Stars Emma Mackey and Tahar Rahim were among those who walked the red carpet at the event on Monday night (May 19) in Cannes, France.
They were joined by director Julia Ducournau, who previously won the Palme d’Or for Titane, and co-stars Melissa Boros, Golshifteh Farahani, Finnegan Oldfield, and Louai El Amrousy.
Alpha is about a troubled 13-year-old girl who lives alone with her mother. Their world comes crashing down the day she comes home from school with a tattoo on her arm.
Variety reports that in the middle of the premiere, there was an interruption in the balcony of the auditorium and audience members began shouting for a doctor and waving their phone flashlights. The movie was not paused and paramedics arrived to...

Count on Julia Ducournau to leave Cannes speechless.
The French director, who shocked and stunned the world’s biggest film festival in 2021 when her body horror masterpiece Titane won the Palme d’Or, returned with her latest genre-mash up, Alpha.
Ducourau walked the red carpet with her cast, including Tahar Rahim, Golshifteh Farahani and Emma Mackey, with Cannes jury president Juliette Binoche and actress Vicky Krieps also in attendance.
The Cannes crowd gave Ducournau and her team enthusiastic applause and quite a few cheers for the AIDS-coded horror drama about a mysterious virus and the fear and social exclusion it evokes. While considerably less violent and provocative than her Palme d’Or winner Titane, Alpha proved just as moving, with several of the castmembers drying their eyes as the house lights came up. There was particularly loud applause for Melissa Boros, who plays the titular Alpha, for Farahani as her mother,...

Four years after winning the Palme d’Or for Titane, Julia Ducournau is back on the Croisette, debuting her latest Cannes Film Festival Competition entry Alpha. Inside the Palais late Monday local time, the genre-bending movie received a 12-minute ovation.
The response came after a disruption mid-screening, when some audience members in the gallery section began shouting to stop the movie. It turned out that a person was having a medical emergency. The movie continued, however, and the shouts abated after a minute or two. The person later was carried out on a stretcher.
Ducournau thanked all who supported her film after the screening, saying the team “all put a lot into the film.”

“Titane” director Julia Ducournau made a triumphant return to Cannes Monday evening with her new feature “Alpha.” The mother-daughter infection thriller earned an enthusiastic 11.5-minute ovation after its premiere — one of the most glowing in-person receptions thus far at this year’s film festival. As the applause raged on, Ducournau grew visibly emotional, wiping tears away and making a heart with her hands as a sign of gratitude.
But the premiere of “Alpha” faced a brief interruption when, about an hour into the film’s runtime, attendees in the balcony began waving their phone flashlights. Some audience members shouted for a doctor in French, asking for the screening to be halted. Paramedics eventually arrived and, shortly after, one audience member was carried out on a stretcher. The screening of “Alpha” continued without pausing as the incident unfolded.
It remains unclear what the cause of the medical emergency was. The incident...

Julia Ducournau has insisted that genre “imposed a distance” on her first two features, but to watch her third — the dour and dismal “Alpha,” which eschews the more legible body horror of her earlier work in favor of a comparatively grounded AIDS allegory — is to appreciate that genre wasn’t a wedge between emotions in “Raw” and “Titane” so much as it was a conduit for them. Depriving herself of that same channel as she plunges headlong into the most loaded material of her career so far, Ducournau struggles to find another mode of expression that might be able to take its place.
Regrettably, “Alpha” is just a few minutes old before that struggle begins to seem futile, as the opening scenes are so helplessly adrift within a cold gray sea of unformed feeling that the rest of the film can only do its best to tread water. The only...
