French software company Kinetix took home the €10,000 Startup Challenge prize from this year’s San Sebastian Zinemaldia & Technology sidebar, held at and in partnership with the Tabakalera, an international center of contemporary culture and technology based in the Spanish city.
In addition to the cash prize, the company is offered space in an incubator for a year at one of the Basque Technology Park Network’s BICs (Business Innovation Centers) as well as access to funding of up to €500,000 for development.
Kinetix has developed a set of AI-powered tools that offer 3D animators new methods to speed up the animation process by allowing users to upload a live-action video, generate an animated 3D character and edit the resulting animation.
“For us, your technological innovation was very disruptive,” the jury explained after making the announcement. “The benefits for the sector, the speed and the automation [of the process] were very attractive. And also, the...

On Thursday, Telemundo released its first behind-the-scenes look at “Malverde: El Santo Patrón” (“Malverde: The Patron Saint”), the ambitious upcoming series starring Latin Grammy Award winner Pedro Fernández and Mexican actor Carolina Miranda.
“Malverde: El Santo Patrón” follows a boy, born in Sinaloa, Mexico, in 1870, who will ultimately become a legendary figure and a religious icon. Malverde becomes a protector of the people, as well as the innocent, the poor and the dispossessed.
The above clip reveals what the 215,000 square-foot backlot built atop Mexican national park Cumbres del Ajusco looked like before and after, and what it took to recreate the world of the iconic Mexican character, set in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The town of San Blas de Baca consists of 11 buildings with 77 sets, designed by Telemundo’s Valeria Fińana and award-winning production designer Gloria Carrasco.

Sion Sono, whose Himizu sees its world premiere in Venice next week before screening in Toronto, wasn't much known outside of Japan "until 2002's Suicide Club, which famously opened with a chorus line of angelic schoolgirls cheerfully leaping into the path of a subway train," writes Dennis Harvey in the San Francisco Bay Guardian. "Since then he's made the first of two projected Suicide sequels, the surreal psychosexual nightmare Strange Circus (2005), and deadly-'do J-horror exercise Exte: Hair Extensions (2007), to name a few. Though not in the Miike league of complete unpredictability (let alone productivity), Sono's films have been a diverse lot, not excluding an exercise or two in straight-ahead naturalism. The mega-dose of Sono that the Roxie offers this month, however, feels like two very large pieces cut from the same pie. Opening Friday is 2008's Love Exposure, clocking just under four hours (not counting intermission); next up is 2010's Cold Fish (starting Sept.
