Criterion unveiled their titles for October 2025 and, true to form, their new releases in the month of October lean into the spooky and macabre. Among the new titles are a recent Guillermo del Toro classic, a Ken Russell favorite making its 4K debut and two gems from Canadian auteur David Cronenberg. Plus, we get 4K reissues of two of Criterion’s very best.

Let’s start off with the David Cronenberg titles. First off is “A History of Violence,” from 2005, which gave him a great second wind after years spent offering up more obscure films. The feature, based on a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, follows a small-town everyman (Viggo Mortensen) who, after a violent attack at his diner, unlocks his hidden past. Featuring memorable, suitably colorful supporting performances from Ed Harris and William Hurt, it’s one of Cronenberg’s very best. And the Criterion...

The Criterion Collection‘s October line-up is stacked with genre heavy hitters: Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Eyes Without a Face, The Shrouds, A History of Violence, Altered States, Deep Crimson, and Nightmare Alley.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me will be released on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on October 7.

Serving a prequel to “Twin Peaks,” the 1992 psychological horror film is directed by David Lynch from a script he co-wrote with Robert Engels.

Of all the Star Trek films starring the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series, one stands alone as a particularly poor showing. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is the only film in the series directed by William Shatner, and it has been panned for everything from directing to the script. On the 35th anniversary of the movie's release, it's worth a second look. However, when compared to its predecessors and successors on the big screen, one thing is clear: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier simply had bad visual effects.

William Shatner fights God. That’s about all anyone remembers from the infamous Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Over the years, the tale has grown in the telling. Some called it one of the worst films of all time, others call it a box office catastrophe. It killed the careers of the director, producer, the entire special effects company, and nearly ended the entire Star Trek franchise right there and then. It is remembered merely as a vanity project gone horribly wrong.

But ask yourself this. What does God need with a starship? Can you answer it? Can you understand the question? To dismiss it out of hand is to dismiss the opportunity to think.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier has always got a bad rep from most fans and critics alike. It’s usually voted the least liked, original crew feature film and current holds a not very hot, 21% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

But I think that is unfair. I believe the film has a lot more going for it than people give it credit. Once you look past the special effects and strange plot, there is probably the closest feature film that resembles the Original Series. Also, it’s a film that deserves a decent Directors Cut.
