Dr Sales Boards Family Crime Mystery ‘Generations’, Dr Drama’s New Flagship Series After ‘Prisoner’ (Exclusive)
Image
Dr Sales, the international sales arm of Danish pubcaster Dr, is launching at Mipcom in Cannes Dr Drama’s latest event series “Generations,” mixing crime, mystery and family secrets.

Making her debut in long-form serialised drama is Anna Emma Haudal, behind DR3’s hit youth series “Doggystyle” for which she won a national Robert Award for best short series in 2019. Haudal shares the writing credits with seasoned writer Rune-Schjøtt-Wieth and co-directs with Thomas Daneskov (“Wild Men”) and Ville Gideon Sörman (“I See You”).

Toplining the drama is rising talent Alice Bier who landed the title role in Netflix’s period drama “Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction,” after an appearance in her mother Susanne Bier’s “The Night Manager.” In other main roles are seasoned actresses Ulla Henningsen, Anette Støvelbæk as well as Simon Sears (“Ride Upon the Storm”).

The series opens with the discovery of a mummified infant during a...

Playtime Boards Danish Revenge Thriller ‘Crossing Lines’ by Baghdad-Born Jahfar Muataz
Image
Playtime has boarded “Crossing Lines,” a Danish thriller by Baghdad-born first-time director Jahfar Muataz.

Currently filming, “Crossing Lines” revolves around a reformed criminal, Cairo, who enjoys his new life as a gang exit counselor. When his nephew Hamza disappears, Cairo discovers he had secretly joined his former gang. Despite his pledge to avoid violence, Cairo enlists his former underworld connections, growing frustrated with the police’s lack of action. His investigation leads him into Copenhagen’s criminal scene where his past instincts resurface.

The well-known cast is led by Afshin Firouzi (“Boundless”), Albert Arthur Amiryan (“Forhøret”), Charlotte Fich (“Borgen”).

“Jahfar’s script is a page turner,” said Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, co-ceo of Playtime. “This is exactly what you are looking for when you receive a project as an international sales company: something engaging, with a fresh tone, that can speak to people across borders,” he continued.

Jahfar moved to Denmark as...

Prisoner – TV Series Review
Sofie Gråbøl

Prison films and series tend to pick one of the following themes: Action flicks with plenty of fighting, starring the likes of a Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme or Scott Adkins. Usually, it’s a good guy fighting for survival against overwhelming odds. Next would be the slew of sexploitation women-in-chains sort, using the premise as an excuse for nudity and other aspects of lurid appeal. Most were B movies that thrived in the 1970s –‘80s. The “Orange is the New Black” series classed that genre up considerably without losing its titillation value. Then there were high-quality character dramas like Shawshank Redemption, Cool Hand Luke and The Rock. Finally come comedies like The Longest Yard.

The six-episode subtitled Danish drama “Prisoner” manages to break relatively new ground with a bleak,...

‘Prisoner’ Directors Michael Noer and Frederik Louis Hviid Talk Drama Series as Dr Sales Close With the BBC, Canal+: ‘There Is a Sense of Urgency to It’ (Exclusive)
Image
Dr Sales has been racking up sales for Danish drama series “Prisoner.”

Starring Sofie Gråbøl, David Dencik, Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt and Charlotte Fich, it has been picked up by BBC (U.K. and Ireland), Canal+ Group’s channel Polar+ (France), MHz Choice (U.S.), Sbs (Australia), Npo (Netherlands) and BeTV (French-speaking Belgium).

Revolving around four desperate prison guards, forced to deal with everything from rampant drug trade to their personal problems and imminent closure of the prison, the show was created by Kim Fupz Aakeson.

“‘Prisoner’ is an authentic, complex and compelling portrait of the harsh realities of life in prison, where it isn’t only the inmates who are trapped,” said Sue Deeks, head of program acquisitions at BBC, with Npo’s Evelien Bloemena adding:

“It’s about people with good intentions forced into difficult situations. A series with a great cast and a good fit for us as a public broadcaster.

In a New Series Led By ‘The Killing’ Star Sofie Grabol, Everyone Is a ‘Prisoner’
Image
Everyone is a “Prisoner” in a new Dr Drama series created by Kim Fupz Aakeson, just shown at Canneseries. Not just the inmates crammed inside an old Danish prison, but the people who guard them as well.

“Twenty years ago, I wrote a Dogme film [‘In Your Hands’] that also took place in prison. I became interested in these guards, because who takes on that job? Who walks into such a hostile environment every day, unarmed?!,” he wonders.

The characters – played by “The Killing” star Sofie Gråbøl, David Dencik, Charlotte Fich and Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt as Sammi, an ambitious rookie – have to watch their backs. But frustrated criminals are not their biggest problem: it’s the system itself, which leaves them powerless.

“It’s an extremely hard profession, poorly paid. They are constantly understaffed,” observes Gråbøl. Taking on Miriam, who still believes in people even though she can’t trust her own son.

Wolf (All-Region)
Aooowww — Woo! Jack Nicholson summons his inner dog — and dons the makeup and scary contact lenses — to go the Larry Talbot route. Unfortunately, his moon-howling nighttime life isn’t as interesting as the dog-eat-dog infighting in the publishing house where he works – where feral instincts and sharp lupine senses are a major aid to ‘getting a leg up’ on the competition. I know, cheap metaphors are the ruin of promising writers.

‘Mudbound’ Finally Hits Netflix Next Month, Plus Music and Film Documentaries
Original (2009)
Fall is upon us, and with it a fresh new crop of Netflix movies to curl up with when the weather starts to turn. Next month’s most exciting addition to the streaming service is “Mudbound,” the Southern World Ward II epic from up-and-comer-turned-force-to-be-reckoned-with Dee Rees. Netflix sealed the biggest deal of this year’s Sundance Film Festival when it paid a whopping $12.5 million for “Mudbound,” setting a high bar for the drama. Balancing out the heavier fare are classic comedies like “Men In Black” and “Scary Movie,” as well as “Field of Dreams” and “42” for the baseball lovers.

The fresh crop also includes a bevy of critically acclaimed documentaries, such as “Eventual Salvation,” “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary,” and “Cuba and the Cameraman.” Jim Carrey’s creative process gets a deep dive in “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” which includes never-before-seen behind the scenes footage from Milos Forman...

Jason Bateman in Ozark (2017)
‘Ozark’ Review: Jason Bateman’s Netflix Drama is the Most Brutal Business Lesson You’ll Ever Binge
Jason Bateman in Ozark (2017)
Two great staples of the horror genre are risk and restraint. Speaking to the latter, the alien was always scarier when you didn’t get a good look at it, and what’s in the mist is more frightening before you make your way inside the cloud. What scares us most is in our minds, and imagining the fate of facing the unknown is often more scarring than seeing it first-hand.

What drives that fear is risk. Whether we’re merely worried about one precious character dying or an entire cast getting picked off one by one, risk elevates the stakes. Take, for instance, when not only a father is at risk but his whole family. Instinctively, we care about the kids. We care about their mother. We care about the dad, sure, but more about the innocent than the guilty — nine times out of 10 the children are only paying...

You never heard of the Great Glasgow Ice Cream Wars? They weren’t exactly Armageddon, and the gentle director Bill Forsyth makes a radio personality’s involvement with two competing ice cream companies more of a plunge into amiable drollery. If you like Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero you’ll understand the odd, unhurried attitude of this oddball show from 1984.

Handmaid's Recap: Taking the Plunge
Need to catch up? Check out the previous The Handmaid’s Tale recap here.

Everybody needs a cheerleader every now and then. And in The Handmaid’s Tale this week, Moira’s sports a white bonnet and really ugly boots instead of pom-poms and a varsity sweater.

Offred returns to Jezebel’s in the Hulu drama’s latest installment, and she’s hurt to find her formerly rebellious friend’s spirit broken beyond recognition. Meanwhile, one of Offred’s fellow handmaids gets screwed in a different, even more heartbreaking way — if that’s even possible — and is thwarted as she...

Lesley Manville, Samantha Morton, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Eloise Smyth in Harlots (2017)
‘Harlots’: Why Hulu’s Bawdy Prostitution Drama Will Prepare You for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
Lesley Manville, Samantha Morton, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Eloise Smyth in Harlots (2017)
Hulu’s “Harlots” arrives at a key time for women’s sexual and reproductive health. Not only are those issues being addressed in today’s political climate, with Texas in particular considering various anti-abortion legislation, but Hulu’s other big spring release, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” also addresses a woman’s ability to decide what to do with her body.

But while “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a dystopian story of women forced to breed for high-ranking men, “Harlots” takes a more practical approach to how women used their bodies to deal with oppression. Becoming a whore or madam wasn’t ideal, but in 1760s Georgian London, it was both lucrative and offered the best chances at some sort of upward mobility and independence – unlike the conditions of the completely patriarchal marriages of the day.

‘Barry’ Review: The Best Obama Biopic Yet, But Not the Whole Story — Toronto Review
Charlotte Fich
There are so many reasons for the movies’ recent fascination with Barack Obama’s formative years — this summer saw the release of “Southside With You,” a chintzy rom-com that chronicled Obama’s idyllic first date with his future wife — but chief among them is the feeling that he’s the first modern President who feels like a real person. Which is not to say that Bill Clinton is an android or that George W. Bush is (necessarily) a stack of hay that’s been stuffed into a business suit and enchanted by a vengeful wizard, but that Obama came to lead America in large part because he is America, a one-man melting pot whose vagabond life was driven towards a singular destiny. He knows what it means to be an outsider in this country, to be rejected for attempting to make good on the promise of his homeland. He did drugs.

Pretty Little Liars Season 7 Episode 7 Review: Original G'a'ngsters
Whenever a Dilaurentis stops by, you're guaranteed drama.

That was the case on Pretty Little Liars Season 7 Episode 7 when Jason returned to Rosewood, and brought a whole lot of angst with him.

He wasted no time in trying to get rid of Mary Drake. Someone has to be blamed for all of the drama in town, and she's an easy person to shift the target to.

There's a high chance she knows more than she's letting on. Are we meant to believe she apparently doesn't remember this other child of hers?

Yes, Charlotte has a sibling, but could the sibling really be the person orchestrating this reign of terror against the girls? It just seems so damn stupid to have another hidden member of Alison's family.

All of the stuff with the storm cellar was intriguing, but I refuse to believe Mrs. D was the one who had all the files on the girls.

2016 Heroes Con Review

Author - Mark Cook

****More pictures from HeroesCon, and artist interviews, can be found in the Heroes Con Exclusive Pages****

It was a beautiful weekend in Charlotte, Nc for the 2016 Heroes Con. Fellow writer Mike Connally and I were lucky to attend the Con. I decided to break my review down into categories since there was so much to take in during the event:

1. Artists – Neal Adams, Juan Doe, Paulina Ganucheau, Stacey Lee, and Freddie Williams II were just a few of the 300+ artists who were in attendance at HeroesCon. All artists were eager to speak with fans, sign autographs, prints, commissions, and some would draw an original sketch of your choosing depending on the amount of time they had.

The Artist Stage was also interesting. Artists would take to the stage, paint or draw an original piece while the crowd could sit and watch, and they would later be auctioned.

The Living And The Dead: the BBC's new supernatural drama
facebook

twitter

google+

We chatted to the writer and cast of new BBC supernatural period drama starring Colin Morgan, by the co-creator of Life On Mars...

On the wall of Ashley Pharoah’s office hangs the bullet-riddled driver-side door of a red 1983 Audi Quattro. It’s a set-souvenir from Ashes To Ashes, the time-travel police drama he co-created to follow Life On Mars. Somewhere nearby is a sepia photograph of a young man looking justifiably disturbed by the sack-headed, creepily masked figures who surround him. That’s Pharoah’s souvenir from the set of The Living And The Dead, an eerie period supernatural drama launching in 'box-set' form on BBC iPlayer tomorrow.

Set in 1894 Somerset, The Living And The Dead is in the tradition of the dark English pastoral. It pits the rural customs and rites of an ancient way of life against the modern ingress of industry and technology.

34 Wtf Moments From WWE Raw (Dec 7)
WWE.com

The TLC go home show. How quickly are WWE pay per views coming round these days?

This week’s episode looked set to be a bumper edition after a couple of new factions were established last week. Sheamus ‘recruited’ King Barrett, Rusev and Alberto Del Rio to form the League of Nations, while Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose joined forces with The Usos to form a family, of sorts. The powers that be have a lot of explaining to do as to why the factions are together now which would be sure to take up a very boring opening 20 minutes of the show.

The other main talking point heading into this week’s Raw was who would be the fourth man? Last week’s episode saw the shock return of Tommy Dreamer to a WWE ring, as the Ecw Original assisted The Dudley Boyz against the Wyatt Family.

A Room with a View
Ready for something actually relaxing? Perhaps the Merchant Ivory team's most gentle and pleasant film, this comedy of English manners at home in Surrey and abroad in Italy is a visual and dramatic delight. Prince Charles Meets Jon Snow's Killer from Game of Thrones, 'Rufty-Tufty' Ensues
Turns out, Jon Snow's killer (one of them, anyway) is a pretty funny guy.

Games of Thrones star Owen Teale – who plays Night's Watchman Alliser Thorne on the smash HBO series – had Prince Charles in stitches during a special performance at the prince's home in Wales Wednesday evening.

The Welsh star, 54, was performing some Shakespeare when he was ambushed by two drama students pretending to be starstruck Thrones fans.

The pair, from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, then proceeded to take over and conduct a comedy skit of their own at the performance staged by Charles...

Orphan Black Boss on [Spoiler]'s Fate, Clone Club's New Threat and More
Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (2013)
Warning: The following post mortem contains spoilers from Saturday’s season finale of Orphan Black. Proceed at your own peril.

It wouldn’t be an Orphan Black finale without a fatality — or (perhaps) two.

RelatedOrphan Black Renewed for Season 4

Although Rudy definitely succumbed to his genetic defect, Delphine’s future was left more ambiguous at the close of Saturday’s Season 3 climax. Batman: The Animated Series (1992)
'Batman 1966' Animated Movie Happening with Adam West & Burt Ward
Batman: The Animated Series (1992)
Hot news coming out of the Mad Monster Party in Charlotte, North Carolina. Original stars of the hit 1966 live-action TV series Batman are returning to reprise their roles in a new animated movie. While an exact release date has yet to be announced, the film will hit Blu-ray, DVD and VOD in 2016. It will be released in conjunction with the big screen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and it promises to provide a campy alternative to that film's more serious take on the DC superhero mythos.

Burt Ward, who played Robin in the original series, broke the news while participating in a Q&A with co-star Adam West. Both will return to their respective roles for this brand-new animated film. Burt Ward says the movie will run 90 minutes, and there is the possibility of a new animated Batman franchise, as a second movie is in the works. Though, a...

DVD Review: 'Unit One' With Mads Mikkelsen Is The 'Borgen' Meets 'Law & Order' Cop Series You Didn't Know About
Full disclosure: Danish series "Unit One" hit shelves in late October, right around when I received my review copies of all thirty-two episodes of the show. Between day-to-day work, the awards season, and the holidays, it has taken me a while to make my way through the series, but there is perhaps no better time than in the quiet of the early winter TV and movie season to settle in with the International Emmy Award-winning procedural. Bringing the progressive attitude of "Borgen" (a decade before that show aired), along with the camaraderie found between the characters in the original series of "Law & Order" (along with great knack for crime storytelling), "Unit One" has lost none of its potency fifteen years since it first broadcast in 2000, and it's well worth tracking down. While it's still something of an achievement when an actress is chosen to lead a new television series on U.

For the third week of December, Clive Barker fans have much to celebrate as Scream Factory is releasing Lord of Illusions in high def for the first time ever. Also coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week are several indie horror films, Millennium’s Poe-inspired Stonehearst Asylum and the cult classic Don’t Look in the Basement is being resurrected on DVD as well.

Spotlight Titles:

Don’t Look in the Basement – Digitally Restored (Film Chest, DVD)

Don’t Look in the Basement, also known as The Forgotten, is one of the best low-budget movies in the horror/thriller genre. With a budget of roughly $100,000, the film is presented in great B-movie style with generally good acting and directing.

The plot revolves around a young psychiatric nurse, Charlotte Beale (Rosie Holotik/Playboy cover girl 1972), who goes to work at the isolated Stephens Sanitarium following the murder of its proprietor,...

10 Reasons You Should Resubscribe To WWE Network
WWE.com

If the earliest adopter of the WWE Network and adapter to WWE’s digital-over-analog future plans, this week is the time when your initial six-month subscription will lapse. If feeling a bit less-than-generous and unwilling to pony up the $9.99, consider the following. In the past six months you’ve seen Brock Lesnar break The Undertaker’s win streak at Wrestlemania, screamed “Yes!” on the top of your lungs, watched Sami Zayn and Tyson Kidd or Charlotte and Natalya have surefire “match of the year” candidates in Nxt, saw Pat Patterson come out of the closet, saw the debut of “Alberto Barista” on Slam City, got to watch Cm Punk’s Best In The World documentary, saw the debut of Sabu on Ecw TV, Ric Flair being involved in the start of the feud in World Class between the Fabulous Freebirds and the Von Erich family, and so much more.

“Haht” of Gold: Top 10 Oscar-Winning Actors from Massachusetts
It is not too shabby in what the Northeast (New England) part of the United States has produced in terms of past and present actors/actresses making their show business dreams come true. Film careers can be a lot like ice cubes–they start out solid and cool but if you sit around in stagnation your efforts and hard work can melt away before one’s very eyes. Certainly no one can accuse this talented crop of thespians of being one-hit wonders on the big screen. After all, one does not become a recipient of an Academy Award by just sheer luck and charitable fortune.

As a native Bostonian and life long New Englander, I felt compelled to spotlight those Massachusetts-born and bred actors from the same region that had ultimate success on the big screen in winning the Oscar for their acting achievement and contribution to the motion picture industry.

'Gentleman's Guide', Neil Patrick Harris' 'Hedwig' lead nominations for the 2014 Tony Awards
Love and Murder (2000)
Fully realizing its underdog appeal, the cheeky musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder slayed the competition this morning with a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including nods for both of its tireless leading men, Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. Neil Patrick Harris’ return to Broadway after a decade yielded him his first-ever Tony nomination for the celebrated revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which netted an impressive eight nods. (Had it been eligible as a new musical, Hedwig probably would have easily tied Guide, as score and book would have been slam dunks). Trailing these shows with seven...

The Good Wife! The Vampire Diaries! The Walking Dead! General Hospital! The TV Addict Week in Rewind
Best Night Of Television: Between Revenge, The Good Wife, Masters Of Sex and The Walking Dead, Sunday night and a DVR could keep a TV lover happy for the entire week.

Oddest Tradition: “So,” asked The Vampire Diaries’ Stefan of Mystic Falls’ Remembrance Day, “we have a holiday dedicated to burying people alive?” We’ll drink to that!

Tackiest Ads: Promos for the game Battlefield 4 feature gamers describing things like stabbing people, destroying and other horrors of war gleefully.

Worst Idea Ever: Glee is considering Kurt to the virulently anti-gay Russia. Sorry, but a show that was too afraid to address teen drug abuse head-on when given the opportunity can’t be trusted with something so incredibly incendiary.

Best Halloween Costumes: General Hospital’s cast donned some outrageously fun outfits, including badguy Faison, who did a dead-on impression of Beetlejuice!

Sweetest Rerun: Sunday night, Fox will air an episode of...

For those missing their dose of Danish TV crime on Saturday nights, fear not, there's a new box set out just for you.

Unit One - an elite team travelling around Denmark solving some of the country's most heinous crimes
