Networks and studios submit hundreds of actors for Emmy consideration each year, but those not officially entered can still self-submit for a chance at receiving a nomination. This year, that happened in droves.
Recognizable names like Clancy Brown (supporting actor for The Penguin) and Joel McHale (guest star on The Bear) were not on the studios' lists that were made public prior to the ballots being released on June 12. It's possible they were added later by the networks, or that the performers self-submitted. Note that Television Academy members get one free submission each year; otherwise, entry fees are based on several factors. Here is the fine print from the Emmys rulebook:
Individual achievement entries have a processing charge of $125 per submission. In addition to the $125 processing charge, each entrant is charged a $100 entry fee per individual listed on the entry, e.g., for an individual achievement entry with two entrants,...

FX will submit 19 actors from The Bear for Emmy Awards consideration this year, Gold Derby has learned.
Two-time Best Comedy Actor winner Jeremy Allen White will again be submitted as the show’s lead actor and look for the hat-trick. Past Best Comedy Supporting Actress winner Ayo Edebiri, who jumped to the lead actress race last year, is again being submitted in Best Comedy Actress.
Four The Bear stars will be submitted in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor category, including two-time winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who joins White in looking for a third consecutive victory. The other actors submitted include 2024 nominee Lionel Boyce, 2023 guest acting nominee Oliver Platt, and Matty Matheson.
In the Best Comedy Supporting Actress category, 2024 winner Liza Colón-Zayas is back, alongside costars Abby Elliott and Molly Gordon.
FX also submitted several The Bear guest stars for consideration — no surprise considering the show won both comedy guest categories at last year’s Emmy Awards.

Radio broadcaster Audacy issued sweeping layoffs this week that have impacted at least 100 workers in local and national radio operations, according to multiple sources who spoke with The Desk on background.
Two sources familiar with the company’s plans said the layoffs affected national, regional and local operations, and spanned across job titles, including human resources, accounting and payroll, creative services, on-air talent, digital content producers and other workers.
Many of the affected workers were informed about their layoffs this week, the sources said, and others are expected to be told in the coming days. While the initial tally was around 100 workers affected, one source said the total number of people who may lose their jobs could exceed 300 by the end of mid-March.
On Thursday, a spokesperson for Audacy issued a statement to reporters that confirmed the layoffs, without citing a specific number of employees affected.

Silverman intends to stay at the station through April in order to effectuate a smooth transition; the news of his departure comes two months after he helped lead the news staff at Knx through non-stop coverage of the wildfires in Southern California, with some of the first reporting from the front lines of the initial blaze that began in the Pacific Palisades community.
“As it stands now, Knx News holds its strongest ratings position in modern history. This is in no small part thanks to what all of you demonstrated over the past two months: your work is vital to Southern California, and despite the great challenges facing the media industry broadly, this remains as true as ever,...

David Field. (Courtesy photo)
David Field has resigned as the president and chief executive of Audacy, one of the largest commercial Am/FM radio broadcast companies in the United States.
The decision caps a 27-year career as Audacy’s top executive; the board of the company has appointed Kelli Turner as interim president and CEO while a search for Field’s successor takes place.
Field has overseen a number of business transitions at Audacy, the company formerly known as Entercom, including its blockbuster merger with CBS Radio and its subsequent bankruptcy a few years later.
Last year, Field wrote in a memo that Audacy had emerged from bankruptcy “with the industry’s strongest balance sheet,” but the company’s woes continued to plague it as Audacy was twice delisted from the New York Stock Exchange after failing to keep its per-share price above $1, the minimum required threshold for public trading on the exchange.

One of the most anticipated prequel films of all time has to be George Miller‘s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. After the initial announcement back in 2010, the anticipation for the film only grew after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, and nearly 9 years later the film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it will exceed everyone’s expectations.
Based on the characters from Mad Max: Fury Road by Miller, the prequel film is directed by Miller from a screenplay co-written by Nico Lathouris and Miller and it follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is snatched from Green Place of Many Mothers and handed over to the great biker horde’s warlord Dementus as they make their way through the Wasteland and come across the Citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. The Audacy streaming radio app appears on a smartphone.
A federal judge in Texas has signed off on Audacy’s plan to restructure a majority of its debt, a move that will allow the radio broadcast giant to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the near future.
As part of the plan, Audacy will divvy up around $1.6 billion in debt among its creditors, bringing its overall debt load from $1.9 billion to a more-manageable $350 million.
The plan will also see a George Soros-backed investment fund acquire around $400 million in debt, which the group will swap for stock in Audacy, as reported by The Desk and other publications last week.
“Today’s announcement marks a powerful step forward for Audacy, positioning the Company for an exciting future,” David Field, the Chairman and CEO of Audacy, said in a statement on Tuesday. “As expected, we have achieved a speedy confirmation of our prepackaged plan,...

“The decision by our existing and new debt-holders to become equity holders in Audacy represents a significant vote of confidence in our company and the future of the radio and audio business,” a spokesperson for Audacy said in a statement.
The investment marks the latest move involving Soros Fund acquiring some or all of a distressed media company. Last year, Sorous Fund helped bring Vice Media out of bankruptcy after taking a position in that company. It also acquired a minority stake in Crooked Media,...

The Audacy streaming radio app appears on a smartphone.
Radio broadcaster Audacy says it is moving forward with plans to develop and launch a subscription-based streaming audio service within the next few years.
In a court filing this month, officials at Audacy confirmed the radio industry was suffering from “over-the-air listening erosion,” or a drop in audience for traditional Am and FM radio stations, as more consumers — particularly those who are younger and tech-savvy — gravitate toward digital platforms and mobile devices.
“While reach remains strong…consumption continues to fragment and shifts toward digital devices,” David Field, Audacy’s CEO, said in the filing.
The comments were outlined in an internal business plan outlining Audacy’s long-term strategy. The plan was released this month as part of Audacy’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, in which the broadcaster sought to eliminate all but $350 million in debt through restructuring.

One of the largest radio companies in the U.S., Audacy, said Sunday that it would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after reaching a deal with its debt holders to restructure.
Audacy owns some of the most high-profile radio stations in the U.S., including L.A.’s infamous alternative station Kroq, Kcbs and Knx, as well as New York’s 1010 Wins news station, Wcbs talk station, and Wfan, the country’s first sports radio station.
Audacy owns more than 200 radio stations across the country, and also operates dozens of digital radio channels. The company also has partnerships with companies like Warner Bros. Discovery and Bloomberg LP.
Audacy was created after the merger of Entercom and CBS Radio in 2017, when CBS was looking to exit its non-tv businesses.
In a statement Sunday, the company said the deal with debt holders will reduce its debt load by about 80%, from $1.9 billion to $350 million.

Just prior to the season finale episode, which will be released tonight on AppleTV+, the show Shantaram starring Charlie Hunnam has been axed by the streaming service. Stantaram is based on the lengthy 900-plus page novel by Gregory David Roberts and had a huge production with the ambitious, epic scope of shooting across two continents. Both of which had been impacted by the Covid pandemic.
The series started filming its first season, but production came to a pause in February 2020 when the pandemic was taking shape. Since the show filmed in multiple countries, production was not able to resume until May 2021 for the remaining ten episodes of the season. Deadline reports that the show hadn’t quite taken off as much as the streaming service’s more popular titles, such as The Morning Show and Ted Lasso.

Charlie Hunnam's return to the Sons of Anarchy universe might happen sooner than you think.
Deadline reported this week that the star's TV comeback vehicle, Shantaram, has been canceled after just one season.
The cancellation comes just ahead of its first season finale.
No reason for the cancellation has been given, but the show hasn't reached the level of success as some of its Apple TV+ counterparts.
Many of the streaming services still keep viewership statistics under wraps, and the expansive nature of Shantaram certainly makes us think it was an expensive series to produce.
The show is described as "a hopeful cinematic love story coupled with a thrilling epic adventure that follows one man's journey to redemption through a country that changes his life."
It follows a fugitive named Lin Ford (Hunnam) looking to get lost in vibrant and chaotic 1980s Bombay.

Actor Charlie Hunnam-starrer series ‘Shantaram’ will not be returning for a second season.
Its Season 1 finale, released tomorrow, December 16, will serve as a series finale, reports ‘Variety’.
Based on the Gregory David Roberts’ epic, 900-plus-page novel, Shantaram was an ambitious, big-scope undertaking, shot across two continents, which was impacted by the pandemic.
The series had shot two episodes before pausing filming in late-February 2020. Because of its expansive nature requiring filming in multiple countries, the series did not resume production on the remaining 10 episodes until May 2021.
‘Shantaram’, which hasn’t generated the level of buzz that some of Apple TV+’s popular titles have, follows Lin Ford (Hunnam), who escapes a maximum-security Australian prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of 1980s Bombay, gets entangled with a local mafia boss and eventually uses his gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan. Episode 2. Charlie Hunnam in “Shantaram,” premiering October 14, 2022 on Apple TV+. Courtesy of Apple TV+
“Shantaram” is an intense thriller series, filmed in Bhopal, India, but set in Mumbai back when it was called Bombay. It offers a gritty look at poverty, corruption and organized crime that many will find will be hard to get into, but well worth the effort. In Season One, protagonist Lin Ford (Charlie Hunnam) is on the lam from Australia for something we won’t learn about for a while. Upon arrival in India, he’s mugged and wakes up in one of Bombay’s poorest sections, luckily surrounded by kind-hearted locals. Without money or a passport, Lin makes himself useful to the community by using medical knowledge he’d acquired in an impoverished area lacking other access to treatment.
The time period isn’t specified but some references and the state of technology make it seem vaguely in the 1980s,...

If you enjoy watching talented actors situated in foreign lands, drenched in cosmetically applied sweat, opining in borderline-comical accents about second chances, Apple TV+’s Shantaram is likely to be your favorite new show of the fall.
Breathlessly awaited for nearly two decades by countless people who bought Gregory David Roberts’ epic tome to read on an airplane but never quite finished it, Shantaram has the insufferable trappings of yet another white savior story about a damaged guy whose quest for self-actualization leads him to an exotic place where superficial lessons about a previously unknown spiritual system help him and basically nobody else around him. Sons of Anarchy seemingly closed the book on Jax Teller with its 2014 series finale, but Charlie Hunnam is not ruling out a return to that world in some capacity.
The franchise created by Kurt Sutter remains alive and kicking, thanks to Mayans M.C., which recently secured a pickup for Season 5.
If you watch Sons of Anarchy online, you know Jax Teller died in the series finale, but the actor is working on ways to bring the character back.

“Sex Education” producer Eleven has cast “Ten Pound Poms,” a drama series from “Brassic” creator Danny Brocklehurst for BBC and Australian streamer Stan.
Michelle Keegan (“Brassic”), Faye Marsay (“Game of Thrones”) and Warren Brown (“The Responder”) lead the cast alongside Australian actors Rob Collins (“Mystery Road”), Leon Ford (“Elvis”), Declan Coyle (“Long Black”), David Field (“Shantaram”), Stephen Curry (“Hounds of Love”), Hattie Hook (“Savage River”), Finn Treacy (“The Portable Door”) and Emma Hamilton (“The Tudors”).
The six-part series follows a group of Brits as they leave dreary post-war Britain in 1956 to embark on a life-altering adventure on the other side of the world, in sun-soaked Australia. But life down under isn’t exactly the idyllic dream the new arrivals have been promised.
Brocklehurst said: “ ‘Ten Pounds Poms’ demands an ensemble cast that we are always rooting for, actors we love and want to succeed. I am thrilled to have found those actors.

Director Andrew Dominik’s funny, violent film about Australian criminal Mark ‘Chopper’ Read from 2000 contains a never-bettered performance from Bana
With this superb true-crime drama from 2000, now on re-release, director Andrew Dominik made a brilliant debut. But in terms of sheer star-birth impact, Dominik had nothing on the breakthrough made by the leading man he’d found, former TV comic Eric Bana who gave the big-screen performance of his life, reeking with lairy anti-charm and black comic charisma.
Bana plays Mark “Chopper” Read, the notoriously violent and misogynist Melbourne criminal on whose unreliable but bestselling memoirs the film is based. We see him in jail in the late 70s, grinning, giggling and monologuing with eerie lack of fear; first launching a savage attack on rival tough guy Keithy George (David Field) in the prison association room, then snarlingly informing his cringing lieutenant Jimmy Loughnan (Simon Lyndon) that he intends to...
