Intro: Marriage. Divorce. Dating. Unplanned pregnancy. Psychological counseling. Gambling debts. Sexual awakening. Absentee fathers. Balloon animals. Cowboys. It’s all covered in the 1989 comedy Parenthood – which tells the stories of parents, grandparents, and a whole lot of kids. This led to Oscar nominations, financial success, and even a couple TV series follow-ups – and we’re about to hear all about it, because it’s time for Parenthood to be Revisited.

Grab a warm blanket and relight the Black Flame Candle. Spooky season is officially upon us! What's more, as if the return of colorful leaves, chilly air, and pumpkin spice lattes wasn't enough to suit all of your autumnal needs, the coziest time of the year also comes with the long-awaited resurrection of three supernatural sisters who no doubt played a huge part in the childhoods of '90s kids worldwide.

Roald Dahl’s marvelous horror thriller for children (the ones ready for it) knows exactly what it is and doesn’t soft-pedal the scary stuff. Horrible (but sexy) witches plot the wholesale destruction of Hansels and Gretels everywhere, and the only kid that can stop them has been changed into a mouse. Nicolas Roeg runs wild with Dahl’s imaginative, refreshingly un-pc book; the usual softening touches are skipped in favor of unadulterated scarifying Fun. It couldn’t be better directed; we wish that Roeg had been able to create a dozen such outrageous fantasies. Star Anjelica Huston is an amazing Grand High Witch, with Mai Zetterling, Anne Lambton and Jane Horrocks providing able witchy support. Recommended!

Crew members working on the upcoming movie adaptation of The Witches were horrified on Wednesday to witness an apparent stabbing of a stagehand on set. The incident took place at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, famous for shooting Harry Potter movies. Reportedly, serious trouble began to arise in the studio when an altercation developed between the stagehand and a rigger. This resulted in the rigger stabbing the stagehand in the neck with a Stanley knife, seriously wounding him in front of around 100 other crew members. It wasn't made clear if Anne Hathaway or any of the other lead stars of the movie were nearby when the attack occurred.
Immediately following the stabbing, several other members of the crew tended to the bleeding stagehand. Authorities were then quickly called in, arresting the rigger and placing him into custody on suspicion of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. At this point,...

Warner Bros. and Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, and Cast Away director Robert Zemeckis' upcoming remake/ re-adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory author Roald Dahl's The Witches is coming our way soon. The much anticipated new version from producers Alfonso Cuarón (Roma), and Guillermo del Toro (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) has already snagged a cast including Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water) and today we have word that the new movie will begin filming in Georgia, Alabama, and The United Kingdom next month. This production schedule makes sense as we already know the movie has a set release date of October 16, 2020.
Based on The Bfg author Roald Dahl's 1973 novel of the same name, the story follows a young boy named Luke who inadvertently spies on a convention of witches while staying at a hotel in England with his grandmother,...

[To help get you into the spooky spirit this October, the Daily Dead team thought it would be a great idea to spotlight some of our favorite witchcraft movies that just might cast a spell on you and make your Halloween season a "hexcellent" one!]
We were methodical trick-or-treaters. Every Halloween night, after hitting every house with a light on for what seemed like endless blocks of suburbia, my sister, cousin, and I would haul our plastic pumpkins into the living room of my parents' house and pour our sugar-coated contents onto the floor. It was there that the sorting—and eating—of each type of candy would begin, and it would always happen in the glow of whatever movie happened to be on TV that Halloween night. Sometimes it was a Friday the 13th film and other times it was Halloweentown. One year, it was The Witches, and let’s just say that it was a little harder to focus on organizing my Reese’s Cups on that All Hallows’ Eve.
Although considered to be a film that’s fun for the whole family, The Witches is wholesome entertainment with teeth—a big set...

With his new film Welcome to Marwen arriving in November, director Robert Zemeckis has lined up his next project, writing and directing an adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches. Zemeckis is reportedly in final negotiations for this project, with sources claiming a deal will be finalized shortly. Warner Bros. is distributing this adaptation, with the project in development for more than a decade, with Guillermo del Toro once attached to direct back in 2006.
The Witches was published by Roald Dahl in 1983, centering on an eight year old Brititsh boy who is sent to live with his Norwegian grandmother after his parents are both killed in a car accident. The grandmother has a gift for storytelling, and the boy becomes particularly intrigued with her stories about witches. She tells him about the little boys that witches look for, and the "witchophiles" that hunt them, before the boy returns to England...

In the spirit of October, this list will look at scary scenes, but not from the horror classics directed by Craven or Carpenter or even Hitchcock (I’m excluding him, though I argue most of his work isn’t exactly horror). These are from the films that aren’t really meant to scare you. At least, not at the visceral level that horror films do. These are the fifty definitive moments from non-horror films that still made an impact on the “frightening front.” From shocking to creepy to unsettlingly hair raising, these are moments that will stick in your mind long after watching the films, even if they are part of a very different narrative.
