Exclusive: Kristin Scott Thomas enjoys how she provided Scarlett Johansson, the star of her directorial feature debut My Mother’s Wedding, with a humungous Royal Navy warship to symbolize a woman working high up “in a man’s world.” With a wry smile, she says, “I think that my Naval links helped a lot.”
During a sit down with the grand dame of Apple TV+’s Slow Horses and BAFTA winner for Four Weddings and a Funeral, Scott Thomas also exclusively reveals that she’ll return to the stage in a West End revival of The Cherry Orchard, who – in opposition to Johanssen’s character – will see her play a woman who’s been brought low in that man’s world.
We begin with My Mother’s Wedding.

A dysfunctional family gathering for a special occasion (be it a wedding or a funeral) has long served as a ripe dramatic backdrop for a reason. What better excuse to bring together a motley crew of characters who know exactly how best to push one another’s buttons and dredge up long-simmering resentments in the process? If Kristin Scott Thomas’ “My Mother’s Wedding” never quite reaches the heights of that well-worn genre, it is not for lack of trying. Equal parts Anton Chekhov and Richard Curtis, her directorial debut ends up being a sweet if rather modest family affair.
The premise of “My Mother’s Wedding” is as straightforward as its title suggests. Sisters Katharine (Scarlett Johansson), Victoria (Sienna Miller) and Georgina (Emily Beecham) gather for one weekend at their childhood home to bear witness to their mother’s third wedding. Twice-widowed Diana (Scott Thomas) has seemingly found love again. Only,...

Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2023 TIFF coverage. My Mother’s Wedding (formerly North Star) opens in theaters on August 8.
They say, “Write what you know.” So Kristin Scott Thomas does with her directorial debut My Mother’s Wedding. Co-written by John Micklethwait, the film centers on three sisters returning home to send their mother down the aisle for the third time. Her first two husbands? Best friends who ultimately died while serving their country in the Navy. And neither Victoria (Sienna Miller), Katherine (Scarlett Johansson), nor Georgina (Emily Beecham) have ever let go.
It’s the same fate Thomas herself lived through. Her biological father died in a flying accident a handful of years before her stepfather did the same. Thus it shouldn’t be surprising that her fictionalization of the same focuses on one daughter above the others––just not the one you might expect. While...

Nearly three years after solving her first mystery and earning that coveted promotion to Detective Inspector, Karen Pirie is finally getting back to work. BritBox and World Productions revealed the first images from Season 2 of the British cold-case drama, which finds Lauren Lyle's titular crime-solver back in the saddle with a new, disturbing assignment that will have all eyes on her. Adapted once again by Emer Kenny, this run of episodes is based on the second book in Val McDermid's best-selling series of detective novels, titled A Darker Domain, and picks up with the inspector getting used to her newfound authority. However, that position is quickly tested when she's given a case from 1984 that has long confounded investigators, enraptured the public, and attracted attention from sinister forces that would rather the past stay buried.

Since the beginning of Season 1, "Bridgerton" has had a pretty laissez-faire relationship with history. At times, it pulls pretty directly from the real Regency era, while at others it creates its own fully distinct alternate history. Because of the show's lush style and romance genre aesthetic, this balance works pretty well. However, there's one area where the series takes particular inspiration from real English history -- namely, with the character of King George III.
In the main "Bridgerton" series, George (played by James Fleet) is much more of a background character due in large part to the mysterious illness that keeps him in bed and off-camera for the majority of the time. Since Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) is only a supporting character on the show, we only get snippets here and there of their tragic love story. What's clear is that George is severely unwell, leaving his wife to rule almost entirely in his stead.

If you are a fan of actor and filmmaker Dominic Brunt, you will no doubt be interested in our new interview with him, which has just been uploaded onto YouTube. Brunt has directed numerous horror films, including Attack of the Adult Babies and Wolf Manor. Outside of the horror genre, Brunt has also been playing Paddy Kirk in Emmerdale since 1997, so he is clearly a major celebrity who the British public will be very familiar with.
Brunt regularly attends FrightFest, and he was there this year to promote Broken Bird, which had its world premiere at the event. Written by Brunt and directed by his wife, Joanne Mitchell, Broken Bird tells the story of a mortuary assistant named Sybil (Rebecca Calder), who undergoes a downward spiral into the depths of madness, resulting in her causing harm to those who cross her path.

Broken Bird had the enviable, and possibly daunting, task of opening this year’s FrightFest festival, which is now in its 25th year. Previous festival openers include The Guest, Land of the Dead and Suitable Flesh, so Broken Bird shares company with some very high fliers, but would this year’s opener nose dive or soar towards the sun? Well, it’s safe to say that Broken Bird is not a lame duck.
Upon first meeting Sybil (Rebecca Calder) you would be forgiven for thinking she seems very proper, very traditional and very reserved; you would be right… to an extent. Her pristine and formal look, her polite and dignified manner and her interest in poetry seemingly make her the perfect employee – tending to grieving relatives and managing their needs, but Sybil has darker sides.

Rebecca Calder is superbly supple as the damaged protagonist in a richly imagined horror story
With her prim manners, mid-century chic and 180-degree rampart of a fringe, there’s something just too correct about Sybil (Rebecca Calder), though it’s this decorum that wins her a job at the funeral home of Mr Thomas (James Fleet). Like Amélie Poulain’s twisted little sister, she’s given to eruptions of fantasy: about a tryst with museum curator Mark (Jay Taylor), whom she runs into at an exhibition about Roman burials, or about sucker-punching an adulterer’s corpse. But, as she reveals to Mr Thomas, the morbidness and control-freakery have an explanation: she was orphaned as a child as a result of a car crash.
An extension of director Joanne Mitchell’s 2018 short, Broken Bird has not only the detail and richness of a long-cherished project, but also patrols a careful tonal...

In keeping with its title, Broken Bird opens with Sibyl preparing a dead avian to be stuffed and mounted. It’s an uncomfortable start to a film full of uncomfortable and disturbing moments.
Apart from her amateur taxidermy, Sibyl also puts her talents to work at a funeral home run by Mr. Thomas. If this isn’t enough to make it clear that she’s not your typical protagonist, her only hobbies seem to be poetry night at the local pub and trips to a museum devoted to Roman funeral practices.
We’re also introduced to Emma, a policewoman whose life is unravelling in the wake of her young son Jake’s (Aleksa Muždeka) death and his body’s subsequent disappearance. We soon find out...

Sybil Chamberlain (Rebecca Calder) has just landed her perfect job, working as a mortician at a funeral parlour run by the kindly Mr. Thomas (James Fleet). The only survivor of a tragic car accident which took the rest of her family when she was just years ago, Sybil’s interest in death has grown over time at a similar rate to her increasing flights of fancy into a world where even outsiders such as she can find lasting love and live her dreams for real.
With a social life which mainly consists of avoiding other attendees at a nearby pub’s poetry night and taking various trips to the local Roman Funeral Museum, it’s during one of these visits that Sybil bumps into friendly employee Mark (Jay Taylor) and she is instantly smitten. Can she keep her increasingly twisted desires at bay and find true happiness?

Every season, Bridgerton introduces fans to characters — and actors — who are instantly obsession-worthy. (Lady Whistledown would never spill her ink on anyone who wasn’t.) Prepare to open your heart to a whole new cast, as Queen Charlottetakes her throne in 2023.
The Bridgerton prequel, created by Shonda Rhimes, escorts us into the past, exploring the very beginnings of the love story between Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) and King George (James Fleet) — a rare presence in the original series. Bridgerton universe newcomers India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest portray the royals in the early days of their complicated marriage. Netflix's Regency-era series, Bridgerton, may have had an extended break between Seasons 2 and 3, but in the meantime, fans got to enjoy the spin-off, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which explores the early relationship between Bridgerton's royals, Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel and India Amarteifio) and King George III (James Fleet and Corey Mylchreest), but the prequel story connects to the original in many ways, even altering the dynamic between two fan-favorite Bridgerton characters. While the Bridgerton franchise focuses heavily on romance, there are a few great platonic relationships, as Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Eloise (Claudia Jessie) in Seasons 1 and 2, Violet (Ruth Gemmell) and Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh and Arsema Thomas), and even the playful sibling relationships among the Bridgertons provide a different kind of relationship that can be just as compelling.

Bridgerton is among Netflix's most popular shows. The romance series primarily follows the large Bridgerton family as they fall in love and navigate the complexities of their social class in the early 19th century. With elegant costumes and classic love stories, it's no surprise that Bridgerton has caught the attention of the masses, but it's important to remember that, although the series is set in the Regency era, the history is loose, to say the least. Even the prequel series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which centers on Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel and India Amarteifio) and King George (James Fleet and Corey Mylchreest) who were real monarchs, does not strive for perfect accuracy. The franchise, as a whole, takes an alternative approach to the era, imagining a much more inclusive upper class. But despite some purely fictional characters and events, other elements in the series are rooted in fact.

Any marriage that lasts nearly six decades is certainly a story for the ages, especially if it’s rooted in reality, like the one at the center of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
The origins of the 57-year romance between Britain’s King George III and Queen Charlotte are the subject of the series, which was created by Shonda Rhimes and based on characters first introduced on-screen in Bridgerton.
While the British king and queen are very real figures, the six-episode interpretation of their romance is fictional. As the series reminds you in its opening moments, “It is not a history lesson. It is fiction inspired by fact.”
Portrayed in their 1800s iterations by Golda Rosheuvel and James Fleet and as their 1700s predecessors by India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest, the royal couple aren’t all that was pulled from history books to create the world of Queen Charlotte. Read...

It is never a normal “opening night” when it comes to the Toronto Film Festival, which is offering numerous films including the much anticipated Hayao Miyizaki film The Boy and the Heron, which is the key opening-night gala. But there are others including two exceptional directorial debuts from celebrated veteran stars Kristin Scott Thomas and Patricia Arquette making it all a very memorable kickoff for TIFF on many fronts.

The fashion and hairstyles in Bridgerton are essential in portraying the characters' personalities and emotional journeys. Queen Charlotte's extravagant hairstyles and outfits showcase her love and dedication to her husband, King George. Kate Sharma's tight up-do represents her responsibility for her family's future, while her loose curls symbolize her growing love for Anthony Bridgerton.
Besides the steamy romance, the fashion in Bridgerton, from the stunning dresses to the impeccable hairstyles, is one of the most important elements. The hit Netflix series is set in London during the British Regency era, and it is based on the Bridgerton novels by Julia Quinn. In the show, the eight siblings of the noble Bridgerton family fall in love during the social match-making season, and each season of Bridgerton follows a different sibling's love story. I am always very much excited when the film-making duo Dominic Brunt and Joanne Mitchell have a new film coming out. They have proved themselves again and again when it comes to horror and the variety of ways they can creep audiences out. From the often subtle but great zombie movie Before Dawn, to the at times brutal revenge thriller Bait to the bizarre but brilliant Attack of the Killer Babies. Next up, they tackle the werewolf subgenre with Scream of the Wolf.
Scream of the Wolf shows a new vampire movie being shot in an old abandoned house but with a full moon in the sky some of the cast and crew go missing and a wolf seems like the most obvious culprit.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story explores the lives of beloved Bridgerton characters, with their ages adjusted in the earlier timeline. Shonda Rhimes has expanded the Bridgerton universe beyond Julia Quinn’s novels by creating the prequel focused on the Bridgerton Queen. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story follows the start of Charlotte and King George’s marriage and reign together and switches between this period and the Bridgerton timeline, just after season 2. King George has had a very minor role up until Queen Charlotte so the Netflix prequel has finally been able to spotlight their tough but loving relationship.
Queen Charlotte has many returning characters from Bridgerton, all of whose backstories were quite unknown before the prequel. Lady Danbury and Lady Violet Bridgerton join Queen Charlotte as their history as young women are developed. Since Queen Charlotte and King George are based on the real King and Queen of England,...

Warning! Spoilers for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
While Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story explores how King George III’s (Corey Mylchreest and James Fleet) condition impacted their marriage, it does not reveal the worst of his hallucinations. By the ending of the show, Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio and Golda Rosheuvel) has discovered the tragedy of her husband’s mental illness, a storyline that is expanded as the two grow closer and King George attempts to be a good husband despite it. But given that the series needed to balance two timelines and ensure that the tone did not become too dark, it makes sense that it needed to remove some of the most painful facts of King George’s condition.

One of the best parts of Queen Charlotte is the relationship between young Brimsley (Sam Clemmett) and Reynolds (Freddie Dennis). They may struggle to balance their duties to Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifo) and King George (Corey Mylchreest) with their feelings for each other, but they seem happy when we last see them together. During Charlotte and George’s ball celebrating the birth of their first son, Brimsley and Reynolds sneak a dance together in the garden as an orchestral version of “I Will Always Love You” plays in the background. But just as we see them gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes, we are taken back to the Regency Era where an adult Brimsley (Hugh Sachs) dances alone, begging the question: Where is Reynolds?

Bridgerton spin-off Queen Charlotte is overshadowed by the idea of death - the death of King George III, to be precise - but Queen Charlotte's own death is an important background detail. Given the prequel's changes to the true story, including casting Golda Rosheuvel, who is a lot younger than the real Queen was in 1815, when it's partly set, the question of how old Queen Charlotte was when she died looms large.
Bridgerton introduced Rosheuvel's fabulous, big-haired queen alongside James Fleet's initially hidden King George, revealing a tragic love story torn apart by King George's terrible mystery illness. The following contains spoilers from Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, now streaming on Netflix.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story revives romance in the Bridgerton universe with a love story that bridges the two shows and time itself. The six-episode prequel series successfully details a fictionalized version of Charlotte and George's love story spanning the past and present. It utilizes all the best romance tropes while exploring some heavy subject matter in the Georgian Regency era. Because of how daunting combining those narrative threads seems, it may surprise fans how delicately and successfully Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story tells this chapter of Charlotte and George's lives.
The prequel faces the ambitious wall of reintroducing Charlotte and George, as played by India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest, and the show cleverly and sparingly uses Golda Rosheuvel and James Fleet's iterations of the Bridgerton characters, respectively. For most of its first hour, Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story plays like a step-by-step instruction manual on how to create an irresistible romance, courtesy of creator Shonda Rhimes.
Step one: Introduce a heroine we can’t help but love in Charlotte (India Amarteifio), a 17-year-old princess who spends the ride to her own wedding darkly joking about skewering herself on her undergarments rather than get married off to a man she hasn’t met. Step two: Engineer a meet-cute between our heroine and said man, George III (Corey Mylchreest), and make him so clearly smitten with her that we find ourselves instantly taken with him too. Step three: Have the pair married off in a lavish ceremony, and then sent off into the evening to live out their happily-ever-after.

Queen Charlotte, the Bridgerton spin-off series splits its timeline, becoming both a prequel and a sequel. Telling both the story of Queen Charlotte’s romance with King George in their early lives and her attempt to match make for her 13 childless children, the series spans multiple decades.

The real people and historical events actually seem to set a precise timeline, even if specific events are told differently. But looking at the evidence presented by both Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte, some extensive changes have been made to avoid some timeline issues.

Dripping jewels and attitude, the fashionable aristocrat sweeps into a mid-18th-century London drawing room, eyeing a handsome young man like a cat stalking a tasty mouse. The great seducer is Lady Bellaston (wittily played by Ted Lasso Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham). Her new target: the naive Tom Jones. “She is intoxicated on the spot,” Waddingham says. “She thinks, ‘I shall have him,’ as she usually does. But then she is utterly derailed by him. He is very much a case apart for her.” The penniless Jones has little choice but to accept the great lady’s tempting patronage: Squire Allworthy (James Fleet), who had generously taken him in as a baby of uncertain parentage, has recently kicked him out and disowned him. Already out of favor for bedding the gamekeeper’s daughter, Tom sealed his fate by stubbornly pursuing Sophia Western (Sophie Wilde), the girl next door who’s...

Witness the birth of the "Bridgerton"-verse, dear reader! While the third season of Netflix and Shondaland's steamy collab has not yet descended on the Ton, the streamer has been hard at work at an equally titillating spin-off. There's been a lot of buzz about "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story," a prequel series that will explore the early days of the titular queen's rule. Queen Charlotte, as portrayed by Golda Rosheuvel, has already stolen the show a thousand times over in "Bridgerton"; her marriage to King George III (James Fleet) has stirred an equal amount of curiosity. It makes sense that their love story would draw enough interest to merit a spin-off — and with a premiere date finally set in stone, Netflix has finally graced us with a trailer. Check it out below!

Queen Charlotte is a woman forced into marriage in the full-length trailer for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
“There is reason they wanted me. Why me?” India Amarteifio’s young Charlotte pleads on her way to Buckingham House. “Charlotte, there are worse fates than marrying the King of England,” she’s told.
Throughout the trailer, Bridgerton fans get a look at young versions of several of the characters from the original series, including Lady Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas), King George (Corey Mylchreest) and Brimsley (Sam Clemmett). Bridgerton stars Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury), Ruth Gemmell (Lady Violet Bridgerton) and Hugh Sachs (Brimsley) will reprise their roles in the prequel.
The almost three-minute look at the spinoff (below) also sees Charlotte trying to run away from the marriage and eventually falling in love with the king, as she gets to know him better. “You are breathtaking,” Mylchreest’s King George tells Charlotte.
