Developers of UK’s Marlow Film Studios to appeal planning permission rejection
Image
Developers of the UK’s Marlow Film Studios are planning to appeal the rejection of planning permission of the £750m project, which counts Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, James Cameron and Paul Greengrass among its backers, with the team behind the studios “confident of the strength of our case”.

The plans for the studios, spearheaded by Robert Laycock, chief executive of Marlow Film Studios, were rejected in the wake of a campaign from Marlow residents, with local businesses displaying posters criticising the development.

The council rejected the project due to concerns over the impact on the local road network and the...

The Best Sci-Fi TV Shows to Watch if You Liked Fallout
Image
Prime Video's latest series, Fallout, has been one of their biggest shows, impressing audiences with its deep storytelling and incredible world-building. The program follows a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, which has been ravaged by a nuclear war, living underground to avoid the threat of radiation sickness, as well as mutants, and bandits. Audiences enjoying Fallout would also be wise to check out these other shows, that have equally excelled in the sci-fi genre.

These sci-fi series are perfect for Fallout fans, following similar themes to Prime Video's latest offering. They either capture an almost identical tone to Fallout, reflecting the series' same dire sense of hopelessness in the wake of a devastating conflict, or represent the same strong commitment to building an expansive world.

ABC News Correspondent Linsey Davis Shares How Her Son Inspired Her New Children's Book
Linsey Davis
To find inspiration, all Emmy winner Linsey Davis had to do was look at her son.

The ABC News correspondent just released her first children’s book titled The World Is Awake: A Celebration of Everyday Blessings, which “inspires children to be thankful for all of God’s blessings that surround us in our daily lives,” according to its description.

In an exclusive interview with People, Davis chats about the whimsical new story (co-written with Joseph Bottum and illustrated by Lucy Fleming), dishing on how she found time to write while working and parenting — and how her 3-year-old little boy Ayden was her biggest inspiration.

William Boyd's Bond: it's not just casual sex. What 007 wants is a relationship
Solo, by William Boyd, is latest novel to follow in Ian Fleming's footsteps, which charts spy 'recklessly motivated by revenge'

We may have got James Bond slightly wrong. Yes, he is a prodigious drinker, heavy smoker and consummate killer, but when it comes to his womanising, the author of his new incarnation believes that the spy was more honourable than some think. "It seems to me he wants a relationship," said William Boyd. "It is not just casual sex."

Boyd was speaking at the launch of his new Bond book, Solo, at which he was asked who his favourite Bond girl was. "I'm not too keen on the expression 'Bond girl' because I think Bond has relationships with women," he said. Having said that, he named the character Honeychile Rider – "nothing to do with Ursula Andress playing her in the movie … I think she is a very interesting Bond woman".

Boyd should know,...

Review: Criterion Presents "David Lean Directs NOËL Coward" On Blu-ray And DVD
On Blu-ray and DVD

4-Disk Box Set

By Raymond Benson

Any fan of British cinema must celebrate Criterion’s deluxe packaging of David Lean’s first four films as a director. These collaborations with writer, performer, and “personality” Noël Coward are exemplary examples of the fine work made by the Two Cities Unit production house, which was formed during the Second World War. In each case, the films are presented in beautiful new high-definition digital transfers from the 2008 BFI National Archive’s restorations. And, as this is a review for Cinema Retro, the readers of which include many 007 fans, it must be pointed out that there is indeed a connection between the films (three of them, anyway) and Bond. Actress Celia Johnson was Ian Fleming’s sister-in-law (her husband was Ian’s older brother, Peter Fleming), and her daughters Kate Grimond and Lucy Fleming are currently on the Board of...

DVD News: Lost TV horror classic ‘Mystery and Imagination’ comes to UK DVD
Network DVD have announced the UK DVD release of the classic horror series Mystery and Imagination on July 5th 2010. This critically acclaimed and extremely popular anthology series presents a selection of Gothic tales by legendary 19th Century writers: Robert Louis Stevenson’s nihilistic The Suicide Club, Sheridan le Fanu’s Uncle Silas plus Edgar Allen Poe to name but a few, not to mention a most faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Famous faces and well – known names lend this most chilling collection of tales authenticity and truth. Ian Holm, Denholm Elliot and Patrick Mower are among the many who turn in powerhouse performances for each of the six specially commissioned, featured-length TV plays. Freddie Jones’s performance as the demented pie-maker, Sweeney Todd, lingers in the memory long after the credit has rolled and the television turned off!

This release contains every remaining episode of Mystery and Imagination,...

Remember Pa fans tomorrow is Survivors day
I just wanted to remind all you hardcore Pa fans out there that tomorrow, April 27, 2010, is a day we here in the states and in Canada have been waiting for for a looooong time. That's right, Terry Nation's original Survivors television series is - for the first time ever - hitting R1 DVD. That's all three seasons on 6 discs.

You can get it on Amazon, but I'm hearing that it's cheaper if you grab it from the BBC America Shop.

Special Features include:

• "The Cult of Survivors"

• Photo Galleries

• Lucy Fleming's Photographs

• BBC Publicity stills

Also out tomorrow from BBC America is a boxed set of season 1 & 2 of the BBC's Survivors remake series. Long time readers know we've been following the new series closely, having reviewed each and every episode. Perhaps not consistently strong, but a decent Pa show I think.

Special Features include:

• Making-of featurette (27")

• Character Profiles...
