[Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for Season 1 of “Dune: Prophecy.”]
It wasn’t enough for Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. to mount three big-budget spectacles directed by Denis Villeneuve based on Frank Herbert’s classic “Dune” series. The studios also teamed up with HBO to produce the TV series “Dune: Prophecy.”
Executive produced by Diane Ademu-John and showrunner Alison Schapker, the show also takes place on a massive scale. The veteran who carries the six-episode series (which starts production on a second season this summer) is Emily Watson, a British character actress who broke out back in 1997 with a Best Actress Oscar nomination for Lars von Trier’s “Breaking the Waves.”
With 28 years of rich work behind her since then, Watson emerges in a powerful role as Valya Harkonnen, the ruthless, driving Mother Superior of the Sisterhood, an early precursor to the mighty Bene Gesserit. She and her black-veiled minions run the universe, wielding their dark arts behind the scenes.

The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 6, "The High-Handed Enemy," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 22 on HBO.
Back in May of this year, it was announced that Dune: Prophecy had tapped Tabu, an acclaimed Indian actor, to play Sister Francesca in the series. Ever since the series premiere, it's been a waiting game to see when she'd appear on-screen and what type of role Sister Francesca will play in the present day storyline. Sister Francesca's role turned out to be short-lived yet important as it showed the different types of lives members of the Sisterhood can live around the universe.
Sister Francesca saw her end in the Season 1 finale (possibly series finale) after being poisoned by Empress Natayla, the wife of Francesca's lover, Emperor Javicco Corrino. This comes just after Francesca questions her loyalty to Valya Harkonnen, who orchestrated Francesca and Javicco's affair as only a small part of...

Inspired by “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the series is set 10,000 years before the events of “Dune” and follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces threatening humankind’s future while establishing what will become the Bene Gesserit order.
Alison Schapker serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Diane Ademu-John co-developing the series and serving as executive producer. Anna Foerster executive produced and directed multiple episodes.
The role came to Tabu – whose international credits include Mira Nair’s “The Namesake” (2006) and “A Suitable Boy” (2020) and Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” (2012) – through a straightforward process.

The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15 on HBO.
Over the course of Dune: Prophecy, comparisons have been made to The Penguin and Game of Thrones. The latter sticks out the most, as the Sisterhood tries to use Reverend Mothers in various Houses to control the Imperium. In essence, it's all about politics, sinister alliances, and betrayals.
With Valya Harkonnen's big plan as Mother Superior in full swing, her sister, Tula, becomes a key player. Interestingly, she has a strong parallel to Game of Thrones' Arya Stark. As Tula's story unravels, however, Dune: Prophecy actually makes her a better version of Arya, given...

Sarah J. Maas' stories are brimming with content that would make for excellent television adaptations, and her A Court of Thorns and Roses was picked up by Hulu — though the adaptation's prospects look grim after it was taken out of active development and lost its showrunner earlier this year. The complex world-building and dynamic characters found throughout Maas' books provide great foundations for on-screen adaptations. Many are hoping Hulu's Court of Thorns and Roses TV show will still happen, but another forgotten Maas adaptation should have been first.
Throne of Glass is Maas' first fantasy series, and while it starts off less mature than Acotar, it's a beloved part of the author's lineup. All seven Throne of Glass books would serve as a great introduction to the various fantasy worlds Maas has built, but Hulu's initial attempt to adapt the series went nowhere. Episode 2 of Dune: Prophecy closed out with a face-off between what are widely viewed as the show's most interesting characters, and it looks like the shocking developments that followed have taken their toll on Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson).
Spoilers follow.
Towards the end of "Two Wolves," Valya returned to Salusa Secundus to find herself confronted by the enigmatic Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who had previously admitted to using his strange pyrotechnic abilities to murder both Revered Mother Kasha (Jinhae) and the young Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior).
Upon learning that Hart - who apparently survived being swallowed by a sandworm on Arrakis - had made it his mission to wipe out the Sisterhood entirely, Valya uses "the Voice" to command the soldier to plunge his own dagger into his throat. Incredibly, Hart manages to resist the order.
"I always wondered what your greatest fear would be," he responds. "Now I have seen it.

Building a genre series from scratch is tough. Millions of devoted fans and detailed source material can’t guarantee an audience for shows like “Game of Thrones” or “The Rings of Power” — or for their new cousin, “Dune: Prophecy.”
Developed by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, this prequel to Denis Villenueve’s “Dune” film series doesn’t require watching either movie. As established in Episode 1, “The Hidden Hand,” written by Ademu-John and directed by Anna Foerster, these events took place more than 10,000 years before Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya found themselves on the planet Arrakis, focused on the mysterious Sisterhood known as the Bene-Gesserit.

Ahead of its debut this Sunday, HBOs newest sci-fi fantasy series Dune: Prophecy has officially received its first batch of reviews from critics. This comes after eight months since director Denis Villeneuves Dune: Part Two had made its theatrical debut, which garnered a worldwide gross of over $700 million at the box office.
Per review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Dune: Prophecy has scored a Tomatometer rating of 74%, based on 38 reviews. Compared to Villeneuves Dune movies, which both earned Certified Fresh ratings, the spinoff is currently the lowest-rated installment of the franchise at the moment. As Ron Hilliard of Discussing Film said, "The show boasts a strong, well-rounded ensemble cast, a compelling narrative, and gorgeous set designs reminiscent of Denis Villeneuve's two movies. However, some other lacking comparisons to the films are just too hard to shake off."

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the review embargo for Dune: Prophecy lifted earlier today and the response to the six-episode HBO series is so far mostly positive. While this is technically a prequel to the Dune movies, Denis Villeneuve isn't involved and the massive time gap means there will be no crossovers.
For the most part, it sounds like Dune: Prophecy is a worthy addition to the sci-fi franchise, even if it doesn't necessarily break the mould. For fans of Villeneuve's groundbreaking movies, that's likely to come as something of a let-down.
In The Hollywood Reporter's review, it's said, "Even though it’s part of a brand, Dune: Prophecy has lots of elements to introduce, and the series is already a slow, sometimes lugubrious build. But I found myself becoming increasingly invested as it went along. Maybe by the end of the first season, I’ll be hooked.

Denis Villeneuve's involvement in Dune: Prophecy, or lack thereof, has been revealed. Executive producer Jordan Goldberg recently shared that the acclaimed filmmaker was very hands-off on the prequel series due to his commitment to the film side of the Dune franchise.
When Dune: Prophecy was first announced back in 2019, Villeneuve was set to direct and produce the series pilot, in addition to serving as an executive producer. However, as the project evolved, Villeneuve's role in the series became unclear, especially as the production of Prophecy overlapped with that of Dune: Part Two. While speaking with Screen Rant at the 2024 New York Comic-Con, Goldberg clarified Villeneuve's role in the show, stating, "Well, Denis' got his own franchise that he's working on right now and he's been busy doing that and his own projects. He's really left to us to figure out how to platform the new characters and the new worlds,...

HBO has just dropped the official trailer for Dune: Prophecy (via SFFGazette.com) following a star-studded panel at the New York Comic-Con. It's also been revealed that the six-episode series premieres on Sunday, November 17 at 9pm Et/Pt.
If you're unfamiliar with Frank Herbert's Dune books, you may struggle to make sense of what you see here. There's a great deal of political intrigue, though, with the spotlight put primarily on Bene Gesserit's mysterious origins.
Talking to Screen Rant earlier today, executive producer Allison Schapkey explained how this iteration of the group differs from what we've seen in Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies.
"I think when you see the Bene Gesserit in the films, first of all, you're really seeing their forward face. They cultivate such a mystique, such a mystery. And they're out there being ruthless and decisive and powerful and trying to play every angle and manipulate every possible outcome.

Dune: Prophecy showrunner Alison Schapker shared what fans can expect from the Harkonnen Family in the upcoming HBO prequel series. In Denis Villeneuves Dune films, the Harkonnen Family was introduced as the main antagonists to Paul Atreides story.
During a recent interview with EW, Schapker confirmed that Dune: Prophecy will not only explore the Harkonnens origins, but will also show how they were able to become one of the most formidable houses within the empire, even after falling from grace. "We get to see how it all started. When we meet Valya Harkonnen, she is a girl whose family has experienced a tremendous fall from power and has lost its noble status," Schapker said. "She dreams of restoring what she feels is rightfully theirs. How she goes from being someone obsessed with rebuilding her noble house to being someone who is dedicated to the Sisterhood above all is a big part of the story.

HBOs upcoming Dune: Prophecy series has received a new batch of official photos, unveiling a closer look at the sci-fi epics main characters. The prequel will take place 10,000 years before Paul Atreides ascension.
Released by EW, the Dune: Prophecy photos feature the Harkonnen sisters Valya and Tula, who are respectively portrayed by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams. They are expected to be key figures in the rise of the Bene Gesserit order within the Galactic Empire. According to Watson, the shows version of the Harkonnen family will be less extreme than what was depicted in Denis Villeneuves Dune movies, but will still be "a bit of a f***ed-up family." One of the stills also featured Vikings alum Travis Fimmel as the Emperors loyal soldier, Desmond Hart. Fimmel is no stranger to the genre, after previously appearing in Maxs Raised by Wolves series.

Once known as Dune: The Sisterhood, the TV series Dune: Prophecy, which serves as a prequel to the Dune feature films directed by Denis Villeneuve, started filming in November of 2022, then underwent quite a shake-up in 2023 when the director of the first two episodes, Johan Renck (who executive produced and directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series Chernobyl) decided to leave the project over creative issues, then Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) – who had been cast as one of the show’s lead characters – followed him out the door. Everything has been worked out since then, with Dune: Prophecy on track for a November premiere on both HBO and the Max streaming service… and now we’ve learned that the promotions will begin at New York Comic Con, where attendees will get to experience both a panel and a fan experience.

HBO has just dropped the second teaser trailer for Dune: Prophecy (via SFFGazette.com), the upcoming small screen prequel which we believe is meant to be a standalone story unconnected to Denis Villeneuve's movies.
It's also been confirmed today that the show will premiere this November, so we're now just waiting for an exact date.
While not quite as visually stunning as those big screen adaptations, the show does have the same look and feel even if it's hard to shake the feeling it might end up being "Dune on a budget." Still, we're intrigued by what we see here and, for fans of Frank Herbert and the Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, this story being told on screen is long-overdue.

What Do We Know About Dune Prophecy? More than you may think. With the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel a critical and box office success, it is going to be several years before we see the next feature film in the series, Dune Messiah. Luckily, production on the small-screen prequel /spin-off was concurrent with Dune: Part Two which means before the end of the year we are going to return to the fictional realms of Arrakis, Geidi Prime, and more via Max.
While not much in the way of footage has made its way online, there have been quite a few reveals about Dune Prophecy, so let’s jump in and discuss.
Denis Villeneuve is not directing any episodes
The original plan was for Villeneuve to helm the series in addition to his big screen directorial duties. The series, originally announced as Dune: The Sisterhood,...

Last month, Warner Bros. Discovery shifted three of its highest profile Max Originals – Harry Potter, Lanterns and It prequel Welcome To Derry – to become HBO Originals.
The company is now continuing this shift with the move of The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy.
Both shows will now premiere on HBO as well as launching on its Max streaming service.
It is part of a strategy to rebrand its highest profile titles into HBO Originals, giving them a linear airing on the premium cable network as well as a streaming bow.
When the move was originally unveiled in June, the company said it was not sure whether The Penguin, which is set to premiere in September, and Dune: Prophecy would fall under the new branding but this has now been cleared up.
The Penguin stars Colin Farrell as the titular character. Developed by Lauren LeFranc, Farrell will reprise his role as the...
