James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown is getting its German premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday night, and its Oscar-nominated star Timothée Chalamet is in town to present the film.

Speaking during the movie’s press conference earlier in the day, Chalamet was asked multiple times by the audience what he took from Bob Dylan’s subtle lyrical activism and his ability to separate his art and public persona from becoming overwhelmed by personal political stances.

Chalamet drew comparisons between Dylan’s subtle political messages and those of Dune writer Frank Herbert: “Be wary of cult-like figures,” would be his takeaway from both men, he said, adding that that is a sensible philosophy.

“I won’t speak for him [Bob Dylan] because he’s alive and well in Malibu, but my interpretation is just be wary of any savior-like figures,” Chalamet said.

After seven weeks on the big screen, “A Complete Unknown” has grossed $70 million in North America and $30 million internationally for a grand total of $100 million. The R-rated film ranks as Searchlight’s sixth-highest grossing domestic release of all time and is expected to pass “Sideways” ($71.5 million) to crack the top five in the coming weeks.

James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) directed the movie, which reportedly cost between $60 million to $70 million to produce. Since movie theater owners get to keep roughly half of ticket sales, “A Complete Unknown” likely won’t turn a profit in its theatrical run. However, the actor was hit with a £60 fine because he didn’t park it properly. Chalamet told the French talk show Quotidien that he chose to hop on an e-bike instead of taking a car because he wanted to beat the traffic. “It’s ecological!” he said.

Very few people serve as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. When it does happen, the host/musical guests are icons such as Elton John, Taylor Swift, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, or Britney Spears. In the history of SNL, only four of the double-duty hosts have been non-professional musicians, with the last being Deion Sanders in 1995 (although Bon Jovi also performed that night). We can soon add Timothée Chalamet to that list as the star of A Complete Unknown will host and serve as the musical guest on the January 25th episode of SNL.

The Screen Actors Guild wisely opted to cancel its in-person 2025 SAG Awards nominations announcement as fires raged throughout Los Angeles. The list of film nominees, representing the best work by actors in 2024, is led by Wicked with five nominations. A Complete Unknown and Emilia Pérez each earned four, and Anora picked up three nominations. Conclave and The Last Showgirl were nominated for two SAG Awards.

Shōgun leads all television nominees with five, followed by The Bear (coming off a disappointing season) with four and The Diplomat with three. 12 series tied with two nominations each.

The Call Me by Your Name star stunned at the red carpet premiere in the Big Apple on Friday, December 13, at the Sva Theater, sporting his new hair only days after making an appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of the Bob Dylan biopic.

Chalamet was channeling Bob Dylan, who sported a similar look back in 2003 when he appeared at the Sundance Film Festival for a screening of his film Masked and Anonymous.

Chalamet plays a young Bob Dylan in the James Mangold-directed film based on the Elijah Wald 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric. The film follows Dylan as he moves from Minnesota to the Big Apple and the controversy around the use of electric instruments.

Where biopics are known to depict their subjects as larger-than-life figures to the detriment of their story and humanization, A Complete Unknown reckons with Bob Dylan’s enigmatic nature. James Mangold, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks, seems to want to keep the singer as far out of arm’s reach as possible. I walked away from the film feeling like I didn’t learn anything new or interesting about Bob Dylan beyond what we already know about him. That seems to be by design but it’s no less frustrating from a storytelling point of view.

For the first time, Bob Dylan has publicly acknowledged the upcoming biopic about his early years in New York, “A Complete Unknown,” which stars Timothée Chalamet as the young folk music legend.

“There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!). Timothee Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me,” Dylan wrote on X, a platform on which he has recently become active.

He continued, “The film’s taken from Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric – a book that came out in 2015. It’s a fantastic retelling of events from the early ‘60s that led up to the fiasco at Newport. After you’ve seen the movie read the book.”

Chalamet responded the following day, writing on X, “Floored.

Director James Mangold and star Timothée Chalamet’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” doesn’t officially hit theaters until Christmas, but viewers in 30 cities can get a special sneak peek a week early on the biggest screen possible. Searchlight Pictures and IMAX have put together special “early access” screenings of “A Complete Unknown” on Dec. 18, they announced Wednesday.

The screenings will feature a pre-recorded post-show Q&a with the cast.
