Showtime's would-be anthology series "The First Lady" has been canceled, Showtime confirmed to Popsugar and Variety first reported on Aug. 2.

"The First Lady" focused on the stories of several of Washington, DC's first ladies, and the first season featured Viola Davis - who also executive produced the series along with JuVee Productions, the company she runs with her husband, Julius Tennon - as Michelle Obama.

Season one followed Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, and Obama. The series was originally on order for three scripts, but Showtime ordered a full season, having it join other network series including "The L Word," "Shameless," and "On Becoming a God in Central Florida." In the inital installment, Lexi Underwood played Malia Obama; Dakota Fanning played Susan Ford; O-t Fagbenle played Barack Obama; Michelle Pfeiffer played Betty Ford; and Gillian Anderson played Eleanor Roosevelt.

“The First Lady” won’t be getting a second term in office. Showtime’s 10-episode anthology series about three of the most famous presidential wives has been canceled after just one season, TheWrap has confirmed.

“The anthology series The First Lady will not be moving forward with another season. We would like to applaud the artistry and commitment of our showrunner Cathy Schulman, director Susanne Bier, their fellow executive producers, our amazing cast, led by executive producer Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, and our studio partner Lionsgate for their dedicated work in telling the unique stories of three remarkable leaders,” the network said in a statement, provided to TheWrap.

Showtime has released the first trailer for the upcoming anthology series, “The First Lady,” which follows presidential couples throughout American history.

The former U.S. presidents, first ladies, their families and colleagues will be played by a company of A-list stars. The Obamas, Fords and Roosevelts are among those portrayed on the series.

Viola Davis will play Michelle Obama opposite O.T. Fagbenle (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) as Barack Obama. Lexi Underwood (“Little Fires Everywhere”) and Saniyya Sidney (“King Richard”) play their daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama.

The series focuses on Tom Ripley (Scott), a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York. He is hired by a wealthy businessman to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit. Fanning will take on the role of Marge Sherwood an American living in Italy who suspects darker motives underlie Tom’s affability.
