Doomsday Returns to Superman Lore, Revealing He's Secretly Been [Spoiler] All Along
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Superman #19Superman's darkest foe, Doomsday, has returned at last. However, Doomsday has a shocking secret that rewrites DC lore in a major way, changing everything readers and Superman himself thought they knew about him. Doomsday just revealed his true identity as an unexpected DC villain, and Superman's nemesis will never be the same as a result.

Superman #19 by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Alejandro Snchez, and Ariana Maher marks the long-awaited comeback of Doomsday in Superman canon. The monster initially appears in his usual form, a giant-sized monster wreaking havoc. Superman and the freshly debuted Superwoman prepare to face off against the rampaging beast, but then time freezes and Time Trapper appears. The situation takes a dramatic turn when Time Trapper lowers his cloak, revealing that he's secretly been Doomsday all along.

Mindy Newell: Butterflies Are Timey-Wimey
Before I get started – or let’s pretend that I have just stopped time – just want to say regarding Martha Thomases’ column of last week:

Shit, Martha, why the fuck didn’t I think of writing that?

• • • • •

See, about two months ago I hurt my middle finger at work. It got caught between a stretcher and a door. The noted and very adorable Dr. Christopher Doumas used the C-arm to check it out. Nothing was broken – be thankful for small miracles, right? – but there was plenty of soft tissue damage, meaning I bruised the fascia, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Plus broken capillaries and such. Which caused my ahem middle finger to swell up and turn several shades of purple.

But you know how they say that soft tissue damage hurts worse than a broken bone? – well, maybe you don’t, but trust me, they do say that – so believe me when I tell you:

Goddamn,...

Mike Gold: The Bizarro Family – Marilyn Monroe and JFK!
Bizarro Mindy Newell’s column debut last Monday inspired me to trash the column I had in mind for today and instead tell you the story of Bizarro Marilyn Monroe and Bizarro John F. Kennedy. Well, let’s say postpone – the first rule of deadline writing is “thou shalt not never ever throw any idea out.”

Way, way back in the days shortly after newsprint replaced papyrus and the stapler revolutionized the magazine industry, DC Comics published a monthly called Adventure Comics. At this moment in time – February 13, 1962 – Adventure’s lead feature was “Tales of the Bizarro World,” based upon the popular characters running rampant through the Dcu of the era. If you’re even thinking about asking if these stories were in continuity, please immediately see your doctor about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

DC’s approach to humor at the time allowed for inside jokes as long as they didn’t interfere with the story.

Cornerstone Credentials: John Forte

No disrespect to Jay-z or Trick Daddy, but if there's a rapper who really needs to put pen to pad to write a book about his life, it's John Forte.

In the years leading up to his music industry success, the former Fugees affiliate lived a charmed life, overcoming an impoverished childhood and going on to enjoy the privilege and opportunities that came with an elite private school education. That all came to a crashing halt, however, when in 2000 he was arrested at an airport after authorities discovered he was carrying $1.4 million worth of cocaine in a briefcase.

He began serving a 14-year sentence in 2001, but the term was commuted when outgoing...

We don't hear much from Grammy nominated musician and producer John Forte -- famed for his grizzly-voiced lyrics on The Fugees' "The Score" album and his 1998 his hit "Ninety Nine (Flash The Message)" from his first solo effort "Poly Sci." Those of us with a seat at Nanette Lepore's Spring 2011 Fashion Show at New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center will get a taste of what he's been getting into lately. Forte and his live band are set to perform three songs created specifically for the show, as models stomp their way down the runway at Lincoln Center.

LeBron James' New Team Will Have A Hip-Hop Flavor No Matter Where He Ends Up
Today is the day. LeBron James, the most coveted free agent in the history of the NBA, will announce where he will be playing basketball for the next few years during a special show tonight at 9 p.m. on Espn. Obviously the sports world is waiting with bated breath for James to make his intentions known, but the entertainment universe is also tuning in. Considering what a huge cross-cultural star King James has been, his new home will most certainly have an effect on the local music and culture scenes, which is why so many hip-hop personalities have gotten involved (including Fat Joe, Diddy and friend and partial New Jersey Nets owner Jay-z).

In fact, signing James is so important to the handful of teams still in the hunt for his services that most of them have already signed other top-tier free agents in order to provide James a convincing...

Candy Spelling investing lots into Broadway
By Roger Friedman

Candy Spelling is in New York and taking it by storm. And just like they sing in the Mel Brooks musical, she “wants to be producer…”

On Tuesday Candy hit Michael’s, where Barry Diller was reaching the tipping point with Malcolm Gladwell, and uber literary agent Lynn Nesbitt was listening to Shirley Lord Rosenthal. On Wednesday, it was the Four Seasons. In the Grill Room: no less than Henry Kissinger (dining with uber literary agent Lynn Nesbitt), Mort Zuckerman, Michael Ovitz and the Pace Gallery’s Arne Glimcher. Liz Smith broke bread with two editors from Good Housekeeping. Carly Simon wandered in, looking for musician John Forte. It turned out he was at the Four Seasons Hotel. Who knew they had lunch there?

Candy is turning into a Broadway angel. She has money in “Promises, Promises.” Next year, she’s invested in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,...

Must Watch Videos: The 2010 Sundance bumpers
One of the exciting things about attending films festivals is the bumpers that play before each screening. Not familiar with what a bumper is? It’s normally an artistic video introducing the festival done by some really creative people. After the jump, I’ve embedded the four bumpers that played at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The four videos are titled “Clean Slate,” “Either Or,” “Growl,” and “Pitch.” All of these have been under the direction of Buck, with original music by John Forte. Check ‘em out after the jump!

On June 23rd, a remarkable album, eight years in the making, will be released. 'Listen' is a collection of 15 original songs, written by children who stutter, and recorded by iconic artists including Carly Simon, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Duncan Sheik, John Forte, Mandy Patinkin and many others. In addition, Jon Bon Jovi donated the use of his studio, so that his state-of-the-art facility could support the recording process. Superstars from the worlds of pop, rock, R&B, Broadway, hip-hop and more joined together to contribute their time and talents to a cause bigger than stuttering - a call for compassion and acceptance, and for respect of one-another's differences.
