Liam Neeson’s Most Grounded Suspense Thriller Way Better Than ‘Taken’ Is an August 2025 Streaming Hit
Image
Liam Neeson’s 2014 thriller A Walk Among the Tombstones has suddenly become a streaming favorite. According to Flixpatrol, the film climbed to number 5 on Paramount+’s most-watched list this August. So far, it’s a surprising resurgence for the thriller, since it has often been overshadowed by Neeson’s explosive success in the 2008 movie Taken.

However, it seems that over time, people have realized that, unlike Taken’s adrenaline-fueled chase scenes and iconic phone threats, A Walk Among the Tombstones is a slow-burn mystery soaked in grit and grief. And that’s what makes it such an interesting and almost evergreen source of binge-watching.

In the 2014 movie, Liam Neeson plays Matthew Scudder, a haunted ex-cop turned private investigator hired by a drug dealer to track down his wife’s brutal killers. Now, while Taken scored a higher IMDb rating at 7.7, A Walk Among the Tombstones sits at 6.5. But the latter delivers a far deeper,...

Spike Lee, Adam McKay and 2,300 More WGA Members Sign Letter Blasting Trump’s ‘Authoritarian Assault’ on Free Speech
Image
More than 2,300 members of the Writers Guild of America have signed an open letter decrying recent actions taken by President Trump and his administration that they say represent “an unprecedented, authoritarian assault.”

The WGA East and WGA West union members signing the letter include Spike Lee, Adam McKay, Ilana Glazer, Mike Schur, Liz Merriwether and Tony Gilroy.

The letter cites Trump’s “baseless lawsuits” against news organizations that have “published stories he does not like and leveraged them into payoffs”; for example, it points to Paramount Global’s agreement last month to pay Trump $16 million to settle “a meritless lawsuit” against CBS over a “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris that Trump alleged was deceptively edited. In addition, the letter notes, Trump has “retaliated against publications reporting factually on the White House and threatened broadcasters’ licenses,” and has regularly called for the cancelation of news and entertainment TV shows that criticize him.

Dept Q Forgot Background Checks Exist and It’s Embarrassingly Obvious in Episode 6
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers about Dept Q season 1 Episode 6

Netflix‘s British crime thriller Dept Q hits the most confusing and frankly embarrassing plot hole in episode 6. Detective Carl (Matthew Goode) asked the other detectives to find out if Archie Allen had a daughter. It came despite claims that it was Allen’s daughter who reported the case.

This contradiction appears to be a continuity slip. If Allen is murdered, wouldn’t the police have contacted the daughter first about her own father’s murder? Although it was the daughter who contacted the police, it undermines the credibility of the investigation itself.

If Allen’s daughter didn’t exist, who placed the call that brought officers to the murder case? There was no basic background check on Allen in the immediate aftermath of his death. It was necessary, especially considering the violent and suspicious nature of the crime.

Fantastic Four | Fox’s calamitous 2015 film, a decade on
Image
As Marvel finds box office success with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, we take a look back at the 2015 film’s difficult production.

On the 6th August 2015, director Josh Trank dropped a bombshell. It was the day before the release of his comic book movie, Fantastic Four, but the filmmaker wasn’t in a celebratory mood.

“A year ago,” Trank wrote on Twitter, “I had a fantastic version of this. And it would have received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.”

It was the moment when the darkening mood behind the scenes burst into public view. Although anonymous stories about Fantastic Four’s troubled production had emerged in Hollywood outlets months earlier, Trank’s tweet was unprecedented – it was swiftly deleted, probably following irate calls from 20th Century Fox, but the damage was done. One analyst told TheWrap at the time that Trank’s...

Michael Jackson Was Upset After Being Rejected For A Tim Burton Movie

Although Tim Burton's 2005 film adaptation of Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" isn't deeply beloved -- anyone you ask will say they prefer Mel Stuart's 1971 adaptation, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," much better -- it was nonetheless a massive success. It was made for a hefty $150 million, but earned an impressive $476 million at the box office, taking most everyone by surprise. It was also better-reviewed than detractors may remember, fetching an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. "Charlie" was colorful and semi-surreal, utilizing extensive CGI to realize a nightmare carnival rendition of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Deep Roy played hundreds of Oompa-Loompas, and Danny Elfman wrote music for Dahl's original songs, printed in his original 1964 novel.

Johnny Depp played the unusual, reclusive, childlike Willy Wonka, deliberately evoking Carol Channing (in vocal inflection) and inadvertently...

‘Squid Game,’ shut out at the Emmys, tops streaming user rankings, while nomination leaders ‘Severance’ and ‘The Studio’ lag way behind
Image
With the current state of entertainment siloed across myriad streamers and with those services rarely sharing much hard data about what's popular, it can be difficult to know what is popular on TV — nonetheless find out where you can actually watch it.

JustWatch has become a major resource for that latter problem, pointing lost viewers in the direction of the show they're eager to watch. And now, the company has just released its own data about what people are looking for when they come to the site.

And in the wake of the Emmy nominations, there's a striking difference between what has been nominated and what JustWatch users are looking to watch.

To compile its data, JustWatch compared three metrics from users on its site. Shows were scored based on how many visitors clicked the links taking them to a given show, how many people looked up a series, and...

Emmys’ Music Nominations: Father-Daughter Duo Thomas and Julia Newman Make History; Hans Zimmer Could Finally Score a Win
Image
A father-daughter composing team was nominated, Hans Zimmer could win his first Emmy, and a music supervisor was nominated for three different shows — just some of the surprises among nominations for the 2024-2025 Emmys unveiled Tuesday morning by the Television Academy.

Thomas Newman and his daughter Julia Newman were nominated for their music for Netflix’s miniseries “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” a first in Emmy history for a two-generation, same-family collaboration on a single television score. And in another musical-family story, Oscar and Emmy winner Michael Giacchino’s son Mick Giacchino was nominated for his original music for HBO’s “The Penguin.”

Zimmer, who has two Oscars and four Grammys, has never won an Emmy but could this year with his nomination in the documentary music category for NBC’s “The Americas” (shared with fellow composers Anze Rozman and Kara Talve).

‘Superman’ Is Here. Is James Gunn’s Box Office Flight a Gust of Dcu Fresh Air, or More of the Same?
Image
James Gunn’s DC Studios reset “Superman” is flying toward a potential $150 million weekend debut at the box office, with $22 million already in the bank from Thursday previews. But now that we’ve finally seen it, IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio are here to debate the movie, which swaps Henry Cavill for newcomer David Corenswet as the kryptonite-averse hero who also goes by Clark Kent. (Read David Ehrlich’s IndieWire review here.)

Anne was in New York this week to join Ryan in-studio at the IndieWire offices to discuss the movie and more, Ryan having just seen it at the Regal Times Square during the first afternoon 2 p.m. public screening. While Anne enjoyed the screwball-romantic chemistry between Corenswet and “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” breakout Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Ryan loathed the experience and found it to be another serving of superhero slop as depressing as any other.

I Tried Watching Anya Taylor-Joy’s 96%-Rated Show Ironically And Ended Up Unironically Obsessed
Image
The Queen’s Gambit starring Anya Taylor-Joy was one of the biggest hits of the year 2020 on Netflix. Pushing the boundaries of narrative storytelling, The Queen’s Gambit went on to become a colossal hit for the streaming platform and boasts a phenomenal 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Brought into existence by showrunner Scott Frank of Godless fame, The Queen’s Gambit featured Anya Taylor-Joy in the leading role of chess prodigy Beth Harmon.

The Netflix show’s choice of sport was the regal game of chess. Although cerebral and markedly nuanced, I was pleasantly surprised by the intensity of chess battles between Beth and her opponents sitting across the boards. These sequences were nothing short of exhilarating action blocks. The seven-part mini-series was adapted from the eponymous 1983 novel written by author Walter Tevis.

The competitive Cold War era explored in the novel was brought to life beautifully by Scott Frank, with the help...

Matthew Goode’s 87%-Rated Netflix Show Leaves Love Island USA and Star Wars in Dust
Image
If there’s anything more satisfying than watching hot people argue over who ‘vibed’ the most, it’s watching Matthew Goode solve grizzly murders under Edinburgh fog with more finesse than a cat burglar in church shoes. With Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani steering the adaptation, Netflix’s Dept. Q quickly climbed to the top, elbowing past pop-cultural juggernauts like Love Island USA and even the widely revered Star Wars: Andor.

With a rock-solid 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, that’s no crumb of praise for a moody detective drama. That’s a full-course applause. Meanwhile, Kevin Williamson’s The Waterfront has also entered the top 10 Netflix list with 8.3 million views, promising more dark family drama to come.

Netflix's New Action Thriller Series Hailed as 'Next John Wick' Rises on Streaming Charts
Image
Netflix's new action thriller series, slightly reminiscent of the John Wick franchise, is making its way up the streaming charts.

Per FlixPatrol, as of June 14th, 2025, Netflix's new action thriller series, Mercy for None, has climbed its way to No.10 of the platform's most-streamed programs. While the highly rated Season 3 of Ginny & Georgia still comfortably sits at the No.1 spot, the South Korean series has placed on the chart shortly after its June 6th release, falling just behind Dept. Q and Animal Kingdom.

Based on the webtoon Plaza Wars: Mercy for None by Oh Se-hyung and Kim Geun-Tae, the series stars So Ji-sub as the former gang enforcer Nam Gi-jun. However, not unlike John Wick, Gi-jun is forced back into a life of crime after his brother, Nam Gi-Seok, played by Lee Joon-hyuk, is murdered. Dept. Q's Emmys 2025 submission could mean good news for season 2
Image
Matthew Goode's most recent series, Dept. Q on Netflix, hit the streamer on May 29, 2025. The 9-episode crime drama/murder mystery was intriguing overall. It's only been two weeks since the show came out, so it's not a surprise that there hasn't been any news about a renewal yet. Sometimes, the streaming service is quick to hand out a renewal, while other times it takes a while. However, the latest move made by the platform may indicate high chances for a second season.

Emmys 2025 are coming up soon in September, and the awards show was taking submissions for consideration so that we can get that list of nominations soon. The series premiered just a couple of days before the cut-off for eligibility, and the streamer submitted Dept. Q to be considered in the Best Drama category just a little bit before that window closed, per TVLine.

Netflix's new crime drama Dept. Q has spent another week chasing the No. 1 spot. However, although its viewership numbers improved, it couldn't defeat Ginny & Georgia.

Wayward Teens Find Solace in Horse Country During Sundance Award-Winning ‘East of Wall’ Trailer
Image
Kate Beecroft makes her directorial debut with the Sundance Audience Award-winning Western “East of Wall,” which blends genre tropes with docu-fiction storytelling. It was Beecroft’s investigative instinct and deftness for storytelling that led her to encounter Tabatha, a real-life rancher on whose own life “East of Wall” is based. Tabatha stars as a fictionalized version of herself in the feature set in South Dakota.

The official synopsis teases that “East of Wall” is an “authentic portrait of female resilience in the ‘New West’ inspired and played by the women and girls who live it. Set in the Badlands of South Dakota, Tabatha, a young, rebellious rancher, who rescues and resells horses, must make hard decisions to deal with her fractured family, financial uncertainty, and unresolved grief, all while providing refuge for a group of wayward neighborhood teens.”

Tabatha Zimiga and her daughter Porshia Zimiga are joined by actors Scoot McNairy...

A Crime Thriller Series From The Creator Of The Queen's Gambit Is Taking Over Netflix
Image
Everyone loves a good crime thriller, and there's a new one racing up the Netflix top 10 from the creator of the hit 2020 limited series "The Queen's Gambit." Scott Frank co-created the wildly popular chess drama with Allan Scott (who owned the rights to the eponymous book on which the show was based), and now he's delivered the Scotland-set crime procedural "Dept. Q," and fans are eating it up. "The Queen's Gambit" broke viewership records for the streamer, so it looks like anything Frank brings to Netflix is almost guaranteed to be a hit, even if the projects are wildly different from one another.

Frank co-created "Dept. Q" with Chandni Lakhani, based on the "Department Q" book series by Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen. The series stars Matthew Goode as fallen detective Carl Morck, who is tasked with putting together a cold case team in the basement of an Edinburgh office. Morck...

“That’s why we’re desperate”: Matthew Goode Reveals Why ‘Dept. Q’ Season 2 Must Happen Under Any Cost
Image
New shows tend to take some time to carve their niche and find an audience, and had networks not been patient enough in the past, shows like The Office and Breaking Bad would’ve never reached the heights they did. But in the streaming era, media giants, especially Netflix, tend to play hardball with new shows, which has earned the streamer major flak in recent years.

Dept. Q, starring Matthew Goode, has been the new top-performing entry under the Netflix umbrella, and while a second season hasn’t been greenlit yet, in addition to fans, Goode himself is adamant about jumping off to season 2.

Based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s novel series by the same name, the series has pulled impressive viewership with its first season, breaching the top 10 spot in 10 countries, and currently holds an 84% critical score on the Tomatometer.

Matthew Goode On New Detective Show ‘Dept Q’, His “Favorite Day Ever” With Maggie Smith On ‘Downton Abbey’ & If He’d Do A Spinoff
Image
With Netflix series Dept Q., Matthew Goode stars as Dci Carl Morck, a curmudgeonly cop afflicted by Ptsd and almost Sherlock-level powers of deduction. Based on the novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, which have also been made into a series of Danish-language films, the Netflix series is developed by and partially directed by Scott Frank, of The Queen’s Gambit fame. Frank moves the action to Scotland, with Goode starring as the English outsider alongside such Scottish favorites as Kelly Macdonald, Chloe Pirrie, Mark Bonnar, Shirley Henderson and Kate Dickie.

As Morck reels from an incident that almost killed him and paralyzed his colleague Di Hardy (Jamie Sives) he finds himself sidelined to a ‘lost cause’ basement cold case unit with his sidekicks Akram (Alexei Manvelov) and Rose (Leah Birne). Here, in a Zoom chat from his home in the U.K. with his wife and children making excellent background appearances,...

Dept Q (TV Series 2025) ‘Netflix’ Recap & Ending Explained: Who Kidnapped Merrit Lingard?
Image
Based on writer Jussi Adler-Olsen’s book series by the same name, Netflix’s “Dept Q” is a taut thriller propelled by a layered mystery, timely humor, and an eclectically charming cast. Created by Scott Frank, the nine-episode British crime thriller grips your attention early and plays with it with some clever ruses. With Matthew Goode’s charismatically jaded Carl Morck (like Hugh Laurie’s House MD), Alexej Manvelov’s enigmatic Akram, and Leah Byrne’s sharply vibrant Rose, we have a team of investigators we will not mind tuning in to for the foreseeable future. A trifecta we have not seen since the cult-ish “Mindhunter.”

So, the only concern for the show is whether Netflix execs will find it in their heart to allow it to grow into a multi-season series. As soon as possible. Meanwhile, let us discuss the show’s ending and the various subplots’ conclusions.

From a genre perspective, Scott Frank's latest project for Netflix has little in common with his previous two shows for the streaming service, the Emmy-winning limited series The Queen’s Gambit and Godless. But like them, Dept. Q is must-see TV.

Adapted from the best-selling Department Q crime novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, the nine-episode series (now streaming) stars Matthew Goode as Dci Carl Morck, an acerbic detective returning to work months after a routine welfare check leaves a young cop dead, his best friend and partner paralyzed from the waist down, and him with a bullet wound to the neck and mandated therapy.
