Audio Film Review: Origins of Her Artistry in ‘Hola Frida’

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for the new animated film release “Hola Frida,” created by André Kadi and Karine Vézina, about the early 20th Century childhood life of influential artist Frida Kahlo. In select theaters on August 8th, see local listings.

This is based on a popular book and looks through the prism of Kahlo’s challenges as a child. Her family is shown to be stable and loving, with a mother who desires that her two daughters will have all opportunities, despite the early 20th Century attitude of women as second class. Frida is a precocious child until polio forces her to a bedridden state, which is symbolically rendered as her survival instinct, embodied by another healthier “imaginary friend” Frida who advises her polio-ridden self to use the soul of creativity to heal her life. The child as artist creates the artist in waiting.

Ghosts has missed a mark by not making Jay permanently see the spirits

Up to now, only Sam has seen the spirits in the house in Ghosts. However, during the 2024 Christmas special, Jay was temporarily able to see and speak to each of them. The show should have made this permanent.

Jay ended up possessed by Pete during Ghosts season 4, episode 8. People have been possessed before, and driving over the boundary has been the way to kick the ghost out of the body of the living. That wasn’t possible with Pete, though, whose ghost power is crossing the boundary.

It led to Sam performing an exorcism. While it worked, it didn’t quite work perfectly. Instead of Pete being expelled, Jay was expelled from his own body, making him a spirit temporarily.

Technically, Jay’s spirit crossed over to the afterlife in Ghosts

Will Pete’s daughter decide to hold her wedding at the Woodstone B&b? That question’s asked and answered on CBS’s Ghosts season two episode 19, “Ghost Father of the Bride.” Directed by Jay Karas from a script by Julia Harter and Liz Alexander, episode 19 will air on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 8:30pm Et/Pt.

Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar lead the cast as Samantha and Jay, the living residents of the mansion. Playing the mansion’s resident ghosts are Brandon Scott Jones as Isaac, Richie Moriarty as Pete, Danielle Pinnock as Alberta, and Asher Grodman as Trevor. Román Zaragoza stars as Sasappis, Sheila Carrasco plays Flower, Rebecca Wisocky is Hetty, and Devan Chandler Long plays Thorfinn.
