Given how shows like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos" helped turn HBO into the destination for quality television in the late '90s and early 2000s, it isn't too surprising that Netflix would see a similar rise to prominence off the back of its own well-received crime-influenced series like "House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black," and even "Bloodline." It causes one to wonder what exactly it is about these stories that makes them so central to the midwifing of new eras of television -- perhaps such crime dramas, universally captivating despite often being too violent, disturbing, and complicated for mainstream TV, naturally find themselves at home wherever risks are most welcome.
Whatever the case, Netflix is now where many go for the thrills that a simulated life of crime can offer. Whether a viewer is looking for a classic series that predated the streamer's existence or is willing...

Uzo Aduba truly came to understand her character, the sharp and savvy investigator Cordelia Cupp, during the final episode of the debut season of Netflix's The Residence.
“She has this energy,” Aduba told Gold Derby at the Hollywood Legion Theater before the show’s FYC panel. “She walks us through the whole case and how she solved it, and I just remember it changed the way I saw her.”
That pivotal moment — when Cordelia, tasked with solving a murder within the White House, barrels down the Grand Cross hallway passionately rambling about a spotted owl — reframed Aduba’s entire understanding of the character she’d been embodying. “I always thought she was this very singular, serious person who's not emotional about anything,” she said. “And the truth of it is, the thing that gets her excited is her job; that's what she lives for."

We're not the boss of you now, but we still strongly recommend revisiting the classic sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle." Created in 2000 by "Little House on the Prairie" alum Linwood Boomer, the series ran for seven seasons and over 150 episodes before it ended in 2006. Though it may seem somewhat predictable now, it was a fairly subversive program at the time with regard to how chaotic and internally hostile the central Wilkerson family could be.
The actors who portrayed the Wilkersons -- and the neighbors, classmates, relatives, and co-workers they terrorize -- were an amusing mix of established sitcom stalwarts and up-and-coming child actors, a dynamic encapsulated by Malcolm actor Frankie Muniz and his on-screen father Bryan Cranston. With nearly a decade of television between us and the series finale and a reunion miniseries reportedly on the way, we're more curious than ever what the cast of "Malcolm in the Middle" is up to now,...

For months now, Saturday Night Live has enjoyed a great deal of fanfare for making it to its 50th season, which concludes on Saturday. But the show will also mark another anniversary this week — one that creator Lorne Michaels would likely prefer to forget.
On May 12, 1990, Andrew Dice Clay — one of the biggest stand-up comedians at that time — hosted SNL. In recent decades, Dice has toned down his image with funny TikTok videos and a surprisingly good performance in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, but in 1990, he was incredibly controversial. In addition to his dirty takes on nursery rhymes, Dice’s stand-up was rampant with sexist, racist and homophobic jokes. This garnered two reactions from the general public: hooting-and-hollering devotion from the tens of thousands who poured into stadiums to see the leather-clad comic, and abject revulsion from those who felt the comedian was appealing to our worst...

The French crime drama miniseries “l3P” is rather unusual in its premise and structure. Before you get into a sci-fi frame of mind, this Isn’T about a relative of C-3Po or R2-D2. The title is the name of the police psychiatric clinic, run by eccentric shrink Matthias Bernhardt (Marc Lavoine). He usually seems distracted from the given moment by other thoughts, and is further bothered by recurring visions and blackouts that may be due to undiagnosed brain damage, for which he remains firmly in denial. Each case brings him crimes to be solved with police captain Nathalie Fontaine (Barbara Schulz), who vacillates among irritation and resentment of the doc, respect for his skills and a semi-maternal fondness for him personally.
The series is six 50-minute episodes, with each main case being a two-parter.

The star-studded revival of the play Glengarry Glen Ross just had its Broadway opening night and an equally star-studded crowd stepped out to watch the performance.
Kieran Culkin and co-stars Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr took their opening night bows on Monday evening (March 31) at the Palace Theatre in New York City.
Among the attendees were Kieran‘s Broadway co-stars Sarah Snook, J. Smith-Cameron (with husband Kenneth Lonergan), Dagmara Dominczyk (with husband Patrick Wilson and son Kalin), and Sydney Lemmon.
More stars in attendance included Katie Holmes, Liev Schreiber, Ansel Elgort, and more.
Glengarry Glen Ross is “set in a cutthroat Chicago real estate office where four salespeople compete to sell mostly worthless properties to unwitting customers. Whoever sells the most wins a car; whoever sells the least is out of a job – a ruthless environment where each character will do anything to come out on top.”

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains major spoilers from “The Residence,” now streaming on Netflix.
Before writing a single word of Netflix’s latest murder mystery “The Residence,” creator Paul William Davies knew exactly who the killer and the victim would be.
Over the course of eight episodes, the new screwball whodunit series — inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s non-fiction book “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House” — unraveled the mystery surrounding the demise of White House Chief Usher A.B. Wynter on the night of an Australian state dinner at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The new Shondaland murder mystery series “The Residence” shares some DNA with another Netflix whodunit: Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” film.
“It resuscitated the genre,” showrunner Paul William Davies told Variety at “The Residence” premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday, revealing that Johnson’s film was a “hugely important” guidepost for his show in the way that it drew inspiration from 1970s whodunits.

This post contains spoilers from The Residence episode 6 from this point forward.
The ending of episode 5 asked where in the world Cordelia Cupp is while the congressional hearings about A.B. Wynter's death are taking place. Well, the opening of The Residence episode 6 reveals she's in Ecuador birding for the Giant Antpitta. Someone arrives to her treehouse in the forest to deliver more resources for Cordelia.
Meanwhile, Harry Hollinger approaches senior senator Aaron Filkins (Al Franken) about his name coming up in the hearings by Margery Bay Bix and allowing everyone to turn it into a murder mystery. Filkins assuages Hollinger by suggesting he'll make a deal with Bix. Well, Bix later turns the deal down.
In the White House on the night of the murder, Kylie Minogue runs to Cordelia screaming about finding blood on the floor of the Lincoln Bedroom. Now she's investigating the second floor after being focused on the third floor.

Al Franken is wading back into political waters, but this time it’s on Netflix’s whodunnit “The Residence.”
In a conversation with People on Thursday, the former politician described his time playing a fictional senator on the streamer’s new show. Franken – who was a real senator for Minnesota from 2009-2018 when he stepped down amid sexual assault allegations – was surprised when the offer to appear in the murder mystery show came through.
“They asked me to do it and I went, ‘I haven’t done this in a while. I hope I can do it,'” he said. “I wasn’t sure that I would be great in it, but I wanted to do it.”
Franken – who also wrote and appeared on “Saturday Night Live” from 1975 to 1995 – leaned on his real senatorial experience during the show and found himself imparting wisdom on the rest of the cast.
“There’s a big difference.

“The Residence” is now streaming on Netflix, and there are a whole lot of suspects. But that’s what happens when someone gets murdered during a major White House event.

“The Residence” was one of the first projects Shondaland announced to be in development back in 2018, as part of the company’s massive producing deal with Netflix. Some things are universally true, like Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation or the fact that water is wet. Also true: TV viewers love a murder mystery.
There’s a reason, after all, that there are so many of them on TV at any given time, from long-running procedurals like “Law & Order” to soapy dramas like “Pretty Little Liars” to dark and prestigious limited series like “True Detective.” TV viewers even like ‘em funny, like the recent “Matlock” reboot, “Only Murders In The Building” or Kaitlin Olson’s hit “High Potential.”
You have to think that’s why Netflix and Shondaland teamed up once again to make “The Residence,” its new 8-episode whodunnit set (of all places) in the White House. In Shondaland’s latest Netflix series, “The Residence,” created by Paul William Davies and inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s book “The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House,” viewers get a bird’s eye view (pun intended) of the inner workings of one of America’s most enduring institutions. Every day, hundreds of people labor behind the scenes to ensure everything from major events to the president’s living quarters are seamlessly attended to. A hilarious, eclectic and often bizarre murder mystery, “The Residence” is the closest thing to a comedy that executive producer Shonda Rhimes has ever done. The show is an overwhelming 1000-piece puzzle that eventually comes together should audiences have the patience to stick it out.

When Jennifer Euston was casting Orange Is the New Black, it stands to reason that she was selecting interesting performers first and, given the show’s evocative opening credits, interesting faces second. But somewhere on the opening page of criteria, there must have been a listing that read: “Must also be capable of fronting a Columbo-esque mystery procedural.”
In the case of Kate Mulgrew, she’d already starred in the iconic spinoff series, Mrs. Columbo.

Rian Johnson delighted fans with his 2019 murder mystery movie Knives Out, the whodunit story centered on the death of a bestselling author. The writer and director has become a pro in the murder mystery genre with the follow-up sequel film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, along with the Peacock murder mystery series Poker Face.
If you loved every aspect of Knives Out, which earned Johnson an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, the new Netflix murder mystery series The Residence, is a must-watch for numerous reasons.
The Residence Has a Gender-Swapped Benoit Blanc
The reason to watch The Residence for those who love Knives Out is not just because both shows are murder mysteries. A key character in Knives Out who links the franchise together is Benoit Blanc. Raquel Welch and Saturday Night Live weren’t a match made in comedy heaven. The actress was assigned a “babysitter” to keep her out of Lorne Michaels’ hair when she hosted in 1976, according to Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live. Welch was attempting to make the transition from 1960s sex symbol to Vegas-style dynamo. What could SNL do with a talent like this?
Welch had ideas, like this bizarro, high-kickin’ musical number. SNL viewers must have felt like they were watching a hybrid of a Donny and Marie variety show and a late-night Skinemax movie.
Of course, SNL writers had their own pitches, mostly centered on her cleavage. Chevy Chase had a brilliant idea — every time Welch was on-screen, he wanted the camera to slowly drift from her face to her breasts. Even funnier (to Chase): No one would tell Welch this was happening, though she...

The White House was terrified of Chevy Chase.
Gerald Ford had just walked an unlikely path to the presidency, first taking over for the disgraced Spiro Agnew and then for Richard “You can’t fire me, I quit!” Nixon. The new leader of the free world had the advantage of simply not being Nixon, but that didn’t last long, thanks to a new comedy show called Saturday Night (so new that it wasn't yet Saturday Night Live).
One of the surprise hit’s first recurring characters was Chase’s unkind imitation of Ford. Though Ford was a real-life college athlete, this cartoon version was a clumsy oaf, falling off ladders and tumbling down stairs. The caricature stuck to Ford like tar, and his team believed the best way to fight back was to prove that they were in on the joke.

Un asesinato en la mismísima Casa Blanca. © Netflix
A White House-set whodunnit from Shonda Rhimes? We’re seated.
The latest Netflix series from mega-producer Rhimes is a mix of “Only Murders in the Building” meets “Knives Out,” with Rhimes and executive producing partner Betsy Beers reuniting with “Scandal” alum Paul William Davies to go back to D.C.
The screwball crime comedy stars Uzo Aduba as Metropolitan Police Department consulting detective Cordelia Cupp, who is tasked with solving a murder alongside FBI Special Agent Edwin Park (Randall Park). The duo are billed as a modern-day Sherlock and Watson and ”Odd Couple” team, as Aduba’s Cupp is the most sought-after detective in the world but Park remains skeptical about her unconventional methods.
As the character description teases for Aduba’s role, Cupp is “an astute observer of human behavior, with a distinctive and – to some, unsettling – conversational style. As she dives deeper into the evening’s events and key suspects,...

Saturday Night Live's biggest stars are everywhere these days: from the hallowed halls of Studio 8H, all the way to the beachy shores of Malibu, California. And in honor of the historic 50th anniversary of the longstanding comedy sketch series, everyone is getting in on the action of celebrating and honoring its many iconic moments. Including Volkswagen, which reunited Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, and Fred Armisen as "The Californians" in a commercial for their latest car.
The air-headed, valley girl-inflection-toting bottled blondes from the popular soap opera parody sketch star in the ad for the new Volkswagen ID Buzz, an electric take on their own California icon, the old Vw bus, which debuted on Thursday. And, frankly, it's giving nostalgia vibes in an extremely earth-conscious way, which is like, totally Californian of them. We’re celebrating 50 years of “Saturday Night Live“! All this week, we’re digging into the late-night comedy institution with new stories, including lists, essays, interviews, and more.
It’s certainly a familiar scene by now, one we’ve all become quite accustom to over the last half century: There’s Lorne Michaels, the famed producer of a televised sketch comedy show airing on NBC. There’s a cast of ever-changing talented performers. At this particular point in time, Jim Downey is the head writer. Al Franken, Tom Davis, Jack Handey, and Alan Zweibel are all on the writing staff. There’s a live audience. There’s a musical guest. There’s the familiar parody newscast. On this particular night, Steve Martin is a guest, as he often is to this very day. Watching a clip on YouTube from this particular night from the mid-’80s, Steve Martin opens the...

For the last several decades, Saturday Night Live has been faced with questions of its future. While so many people claim not to watch or call it unfunny, everyone still talks about it and sketches still go viral. Some feel the show has run its course, the sketches need work, or members of the cast need to go. Nothing ever comes of it because Saturday Night Live is engrained as part of the fabric of late-night television that no one really ever expects to end. But there’s one point in time when Saturday Night Live almost did get canceled, and arguably should have been. The show was hanging by a thread, and instead of a complete cast shake-up saving the show, it led to a year that has become known as the “weird season.”

During Sarah Silverman’s single season as a featured player on Saturday Night Live, she rarely found herself in sketches. The reality? At 22, Silverman just wasn’t ready for prime time. But that doesn’t mean she didn’t leave her mark on the show — literally.
Silverman has given various accounts of her SNL experience over the years. She was famously fired by fax, and in her memoir The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption and Pee, she lamented that “by some fluke, my genius is overlooked, 25 weeks in a row.” But in this week’s Tonight Show conversation with Jimmy Fallon, she described her SNL year as “great — I loved it.”
Her youth defined her experience. “I had a great time. You know, I got along with everybody, and I was scrappy,” she told Fallon. “I just remember being shocked at how grown-ups behaved. I just remember just thinking — because I was a kid,...

“I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.”
That was the mantra that self-help guru Stuart Smalley told himself at the end of every SNL sketch he starred in, sketches in which he hosted a cable access show called Daily Affirmations. While it was certainly played for laughs, the man who created and embodied Smalley — former Minnesota senator and SNL veteran Al Franken — says there’s more to him than you might assume at first.
At the very least, there’s no denying that Smalley had staying power. From 1991 to 1995, he was one of the most commonly recurring characters on SNL. He was so popular, in fact, that in 1995 he starred in the oft-forgotten movie Stuart Saves His Family, and today, he remains one of the most memorable SNL characters of the ‘90s.

After 50 years of pushing the boundaries of network television, Saturday Night Live has birthed countless talents across multiple generations.
Robert Downey Jr. and Anthony Michael Hall recently looked back on their brief run on the NBC sketch comedy show during the infamous Season 11, which ran from 1985 to 1986 and served as creator Lorne Michaels‘ attempt to refresh the show after Eddie Murphy‘s exit.
“I’m proud to be a part of it. It was like an out-of-body experience,” said Hall on the Peacock docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, recalling “just being shocked” at being the show’s youngest cast member at 17 after SNL “meant so much to me as a kid growing up in New York.”
Downey Jr. recounted his best friend and Weird Science co-star bringing him the opportunity. “Michael Hall said to me, I’m gonna go do SNL. I’m gonna get you an audition and I...

Damon Wayans has revealed how he “purposely” got himself fired from “Saturday Night Live” by going off script.
Wayans was a cast member for Season 11 of the sketch comedy series, which has been deemed “the weird year,” as it marked Lorne Michaels’ return after a brief hiatus. Instead of adding up-and-comers from the comedy clubs, Michaels decided to hire an all-new cast of already-established stars. With poor reviews and low ratings, the series was on the verge of being canceled.
Wayans explained in the new Peacock docuseries “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night” that he was not nervous about auditioning for the show, and that he had a handful of characters he had been working on. “I felt like I was born to be on ‘Saturday Night Live,'” he said.
He had former “SNL” star Eddie Murphy’s advice in the back of his head: “Eddie’s advice to me was,...

Dulcé Sloan is ending her seven-year run at Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.”
The comedian, who served as a correspondent and contributor to the late night show, has opted to part ways with “The Daily Show.” Her departure comes as her deal was up, and the split was amicable, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. Her last episode on “The Daily Show” aired in December.
“Dulcé Sloan is an exceptional comedic force and we are thankful for her hilarious seven-year run on ‘The Daily Show,'” a spokesperson for “The Daily Show” said in a statement. “We wish her the best and look forward to watching her next chapter.”
Sloan will kick off her 2025 tour later this month, which will take her from London to Honolulu, among other national shows. She’s also featured in the voice cast for Fox animated series “The Great North,” in which she voices Honeybee Shaw.

For the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, an American institution, we’ve seen a prime-time special, a well-regarded feature-length film (with a theatrical release) about its first broadcast, a limited-time immersive attraction, an upcoming SNL50 anniversary special and music documentary and now, this week, the show that has been at the center of the comedy world for half a century gets the multi-part documentary treatment on Peacock.
SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, Peacock’s new docuseries with the massive task of defining a show that is both beloved and criticized, holds deep and personal connections for its fans, has always tapped or been a major part of the zeitgeist, has a cast that needs a catalog — Steve Martin, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and hundreds of comedic forces over five decades — to discover its unknown history and tease out a narrative that honors the massive legacy of SNL.
Thankfully, this is pulled off.

“The show must go on” is about as close to showbiz law as you can get, but that hasn’t stopped some Saturday Night Live performers from refusing to take the stage. Take Ruth Gordon, the 80-year-old host who said “No way!” to an Al Franken and Tom Davis sketch in which she’d keel over dead halfway through. Which, understandable.
Here are five other SNL cast members and guests who flat-out refused to participate in show sketches…
1 John Belushi
In the movie Saturday Night, Dan Aykroyd reluctantly acts in a sketch as a “cutie pie” getting catcalled by female construction workers. Aykroyd played the beefcake in the sketch alongside Lily Tomlin, but he wasn’t the first choice.
Writers Rosie Shuster and Anne Beatts wrote the role for Belushi, who gave the part a big thumbs-down since he was self-conscious about tiny shorts that would show off his weight.

When Jean Smart hosted the season premiere of Saturday Night Live this year at the age of 73, she briefly became one of the five oldest hosts in the show’s long history. Let’s hope Smart enjoyed it while she could because another comedian recently knocked her off the list, meaning an astonishing five people older than 73 have anchored 90 minutes of live comedy on a Saturday night.
Here are the AARP-approved hosts who made the list…
1 Betty White (88) Play
Lots of fans have tried online petitions to get their favorite stars booked as SNL hosts, but only one has ever worked — the 2010 Facebook campaign to draft 88-year-old Betty White into service. “When I first heard about the campaign to get me to host Saturday Night Live, I didn’t know what Facebook was,” White confessed during her opening monologue. “And now that I do know what it is, I have...
