Oscars: Mariska Hargitay’s Jayne Mansfield Doc ‘My Mom Jayne’ Has Qualified, Campaign to Come (Exclusive)
Image
My Mom Jayne, Mariska Hargitay’s documentary about her late mom Jayne Mansfield, which dropped on HBO on June 27, became the talk of the town in recent days as people caught up with it over the July 4 weekend. And Hargitay’s film directorial debut is likely to remain a topic of conversation over the coming months because, The Hollywood Reporter can report, it received an Oscar-qualifying theatrical run the week before it hit cable — quietly screening at the Laemmle NoHo 7 in North Hollywood from June 20-26, and thereby meeting the Academy’s documentary feature Oscar eligibility requirement of a one-week run in at least one of several major cities — and Hargitay and Co. are committed to giving it a real grassroots push this awards season.

The Academy’s 693-member documentary branch, which solely determines the best documentary feature Oscar shortlist and nominees, has, in recent years, demonstrated an aversion to...

Kevin Costner Was Cut From A Major Movie Early In His Career
Image
Kevin Costner became a huge star in the 1980s and 1990s. He embodied a good, dependable All-American kind of guy, often playing golden boys in sports movies like "Bull Durham," "Tin Cup," and "Field of Dreams." He also has a passion for Westerns, winning Academy Awards for his sweeping romance between a Union solider and Native American woman, "Dances with Wolves." In recent years, he starred in "Yellowstone," a modern drama about a powerful ranching magnate. Most recently, he released his passion project, "Horizon: An American Saga -- Chapter 1," which flopped at the box office, but gained some traction on VOD.

Like many up-and-coming actors, Costner's career began with a lot of bit parts or Z-grade movies with shoestring budgets. There was one role that could have opened the door to his eventual stardom earlier, but unfortunately, his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. "The Big Chill" was...

Cynthia Erivo highlights Sisqó’s surprising ‘Thong Song’ for its impressive vocal technique and unique energy.

Cynthia Erivo has surprised many by choosing the iconic ‘Thong Song’ by Sisqó as one of her favourites due to its remarkable vocal performance. The acclaimed singer and actress – winner of Emmy, Grammy, and Tony awards – has praised the track as an example of unexpected vocal talent in a song with simple lyrics and an unusual theme.

In a recent interview, Erivo explained that while Sisqó’s song may seem light-hearted or even irreverent, the vocal technique on display is extraordinary. She especially praised the energy and vocal control in the final section of the track, where Sisqó demonstrates a level of vocal mastery that many might overlook. According to Erivo, the passion and joy the singer conveys make it a brilliant vocal performance.

Alongside ‘Thong Song’, Cynthia Erivo also mentioned other vocal performances she deeply admires,...

Everything That Has Happened Between Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun
Image
Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun’s story was a classic music industry fairytale: An ambitious young manager plucks a young prodigy out of obscurity and makes him a star. Their lives and careers have been intertwined for nearly two decades, with their names and careers synonymous with one another well beyond most artist-manager relationships. Thee wasn’t a project Bieber pursued, music or otherwise, that Braun wasn’t involved in, while each of Braun’s clients outside of Bieber would get a direct boost from one of the 21st century’s biggest stars.

The 10 Best Movie Musicals for People Who Hate Musicals
Image
Musicals can feel like a tough sell with their flashy songs and dance routines, but some films break through with gripping stories, sharp wit, or raw heart. These movies win over even those who cringe at spontaneous singing, feeling more like great cinema than stagey spectacles.

We’ve selected 10 movie musicals that ditch the Broadway fluff, ranked from captivating to unforgettable. Here’s why these films will hook you, even if musicals aren’t your vibe.

10. The Blues Brothers – English (1980) Universal Pictures

Jake and Elwood Blues race to save their orphanage with soulful tunes and wild car chases. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd’s deadpan humor keeps it grounded and gritty.

The soundtrack, featuring Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, feels like a live show, not a musical. We’re hooked by its chaotic, soulful energy.

9. School of Rock – English (2003) Paramount Pictures

Jack Black’s fake teacher turns kids into a...

Neil Young Is Still Rolling Through Time on the Lovably Messy ‘Talkin to the Trees’
Image
Time fades away, but Neil Young never does. He’s been on a like-a-hurricane live roll lately with his ferocious new band the Chrome Hearts, who make their studio debut on Talkin to the Trees. The band came together fast last year, after Neil’s amazing spring tour with his old outlaw pals in Crazy Horse. Since Ralph Molina and Billy Talbot are both over 80, Neil was one of the youngest dudes in his own band — he’s still a spring chicken of 79. Health issues ended the tour early, almost exactly a year ago,...

Cynthia Erivo Proves She’s a Threat as a Singer-Songwriter, Too, With Subtle but Powerful ‘I Forgive You’: Album Review
Image
The queen of “Defying Gravity” engages in a high level of expectation defiance on “I Forgive You,” her exemplary second album as a singer-songwriter and first release since “Wicked” firmly established her as a universal household name. For those who weren’t keeping track when she released her first solo effort, 2021’s “Ch. 1 Vs. 1,” there will be some surprises in how she veers off anything like a beaten path when it comes to putative crossover.

Because Erivo is a Black woman with a powerful voice who did, after all, portray Aretha Franklin, there might be an expectation she’ll be making an R&b record, throwback or otherwise. That’s busted stereotype No. 1. While “I Forgive You” does have a kind of contemporary R&b stretch to it midway through, in totality, it’s closer to being a grandly moody Hozier record than it is just about anything else. Stereotype No.

U2 Legend Bono on Why the World Has Forgotten What Freedom and Democracy Mean
Image
A lifelong storyteller, Bono continues to take audiences to that other place.

The longtime frontman for U2 is the focus of the Apple TV+ documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender, which just got a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

He tells The Hollywood Reporter about the film and that potential U2 series.

In the film, you discuss the strangeness of not having your band with you. Did this process allow you to connect with your songs in a new way?

Absolutely. If you change the key, you’re already changing the mood of the song. If you slow down the tempo, you’re already changing it. In the case of Stories of Surrender, it has to drive the story forward. So “Sunday Bloody Sunday” is involved, not just because it’s a song that U2 fans like, but because it illustrates and hopefully illuminates a period in time when...

The Outlaw Music Festival touched down Thursday night on the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, California, and Bob Dylan once again delivered a wildly unpredictable set that stunned even his most hardcore fans.

The biggest surprise came at the very end when he broke out Ricky Nelson’s 1972 comeback hit “Garden Party” for the first time in his career. The song chronicles a Madison Square Garden oldies revue that Nelson played in October 1971 alongside Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and Bobby Rydell. Nelson initially entertained the nostalgic crowd...

When Coco Jones decided to sample and interpolate Britney Spears’ classic “Toxic” for her recent single “Taste,” she knew she was taking a risk — and some pop fans were, in fact, offended. But for the golden-voiced R&b/pop star, those kinds of choices were the whole point of her debut album, Why Not More?, which aims to both embrace and move beyond the classic R&b of her breakthrough hit, 2022’s fantastic “ICU.”

“I figured it was gonna ruffle feathers, because of course it’s something so sacred,” Jones...

Such was the case Monday as Season 27’s Knockouts continued with seven outstanding performances — and one that must have really fallen short as we didn’t even get the obligatory snippet of it. I’ll add the video when it drops later. In the meantime, let’s discuss, shall we?

A ‘Wicked’ Emmy battle? Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande could face off in Best Comedy Guest Actress

Pink goes good with green, but it might be pink versus green at the Emmys.

With confirmation that Cynthia Erivo's appearance as quintuplets is in the Season 2 premiere of Poker Face, that means the actress could battle her Wicked bestie Ariana Grande for the Best Comedy Guest Actress Emmy. Grande is eligible for her hosting stint on Saturday Night Live in October to promote Wicked.

Before we get too ahead of ourselves, they have to get in first. While the guest categories are not in Gold Derby's predictions center yet, comedy is loaded with contenders. Five of last year's six comedy guest actress nominees could be nominated again: The Bear's Olivia Colman and Jamie Lee Curtis (who won), Hacks' Kaitlin Olson, Only Murders in the Building's Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and SNL's Maya Rudolph (a two-time category champ). Toss in new hopefuls, like Hacks' Julianne Nicholson or...

Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
Baylee Littrell gets American Idol assist from famous father
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
American Idol had quite the premiere, including a contestant with a boy band connection.

The show had a new vibe, with Katy Perry no longer at the judges’ table.

However, her replacement, Carrie Underwood, meshed well with Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

It was like going home again for Carrie, who won American Idol Season 4

The hit ABC singing competition featured some stellar singers who impressed the judges.

One of those contestants was the son of Backstreet Boys member Brian Littrell.

Baylee Littrell leaves American Idol judge in tears

The second Baylee walked out onto the American Idol; there was something familiar about him. Carrie was the first to mention it, prompting Baylee to reveal his famous family connection.

“My dad is Brian Littrell from the Backstreet Boys,” Baylee expressed.

Lionel’s jaw dropped to the floor at the news, while Luke used the moment to poke at Carrie for...

‘American Idol’ Nepo Contestants, From the Son of a Backstreet Boy to a Country Legend’s Grandchild and More
Image
American Idol kicked off Sunday night with its annual promise: to serve as a launching pad for aspiring young musical talent. But some contestants already have a head start with a familiar advantage: the lineage of a famous family.

Season 23 rolled out its first “nepo baby” with Baylee Littrell, son of Backstreet Boys member Brian Littrell, who auditioned in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

“There’s something about you that looks familiar,” Underwood said to the 22-year-old Georgia hopeful.

Idol didn’t hide Baylee’s background, it leaned into it: showing footage of dad Brian introducing him onstage and performing, and a photo of Underwood with Backstreet Boys posters on her wall.

Brian Littrell made the case for his son, saying that being the progeny of a famous singer isn’t exactly a perk. Still, it didn’t hurt his chances either, as he earned...

The Season 4 champ officially took her seat on the judges' panel next to Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, 20 years after she won the reality TV singing competition in 2005. The eight-time Grammy winner replaces Katy Perry, who left the series after seven seasons as a judge. This is the eighth cycle of American Idol on ABC following the show's original 15-season run on Fox from 2002 to 2016.

The two-hour premiere aired Sunday, March 9 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) and featured auditions from New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville. As the show's only constant since the series premiere in 2002, Ryan Seacrest returned as host.

"I feel like I'm going to audition, to be honest," Carrie said as her car pulled up to Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. "I just want to do a good job." She called her own experience on...

Cynthia Erivo, fresh off the box office success of “Wicked,” will command center stage on Broadway’s biggest night as host of the 78th Tony Awards.

She takes over as emcee from Ariana DeBose, who hosted the past three shows. Erivo is a former Tony winner herself, having captured the best actress in a musical prize in 2016 for her turn in the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple.” She is currently nominated for an Oscar for her work as Elphaba in “Wicked.” Previously, she earned nods for her performance in 2019’s “Harriet,” as well as for co-writing “Stand Up,” a song that was featured in that film. Erivo has also won an Emmy for a televised performance of “The Color Purple,” plus a Grammy for the show’s cast recording, putting her tantalizingly close to Egot status.

“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said in a statement.

As he continued to amp up the energy, James also earned buzzers from Adam Levine and Kelsea Ballerini, giving him the coveted four-chair turn and a huge decision ahead of him. The coaches were full of praise for the performance, with Legend telling the young singer, “Conor, that was so beautiful. It is truly one of our great songs, period, in the world. What I really loved about your version is it really took us on a journey.
