The 76th annual Tony Awards have already made history. For the first time, two of the acting nominees identify as non-binary: Harrison Ghee who is contending for lead actor in musical for “Some Like It Hot” and Alex Newell, vying for featured actor in a musical for “Shucked.” Their nominations have been warmly embraced. But 40 years ago, a history-making acceptance led to death threats.
At the 37th annual Tony Awards on June 5, 1983, producer John Glines thanked his lover when he accepted the best play honor for Harvey Fierstein’s “Torch Song Trilogy,” a three-act drama set in New York in the 1970s and early 80s starring Fierstein as a gay, drag queen and torch singer. “He expressed gratitude to an assortment of people , ‘lastly but most importantly, to the one person who believed and followed the dream from the beginning, who never said ‘You’re crazy; it can’t be...

The Screen Actors Guild presented legendary comic actor Eddie Cantor with the first annual Life Achievement Award back in 1962. More recently, Mary Tyler Moore, Charles Durning, Debbie Reynolds, Rita Moreno, Carol Burnett, Helen Mirren and Robert De Niro have received the honor.

It was a night of record-making firsts and honoring legends from Hollywood’s Golden Era. John Forsythe and Marlo Thomas hosted the 34th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1982 — before cable TV and streaming services took over and network TV still ruled the small screen. Read on for our Emmys flashback 40 years ago to 1982.
One of the most celebrated dramas of all time set new records and dominated the acting categories. “Hill Street Blues” received 16 major nominations, breaking the two-decade record of 14 for “Playhouse 90” in 1959. It’s also the first series to receive nine acting noms in one ceremony. It would end the evening tied with “Fame” for the most wins with four, including Best Drama Series, a writing win (it received four out of the five bids in that category) and two acting trophies.

Though streaming and cable comedies such as “Ted Lasso,” “Hacks,” “Barry” and “Only Murder in the Building” are poised to receive multiple Emmy nominations, ABC’s perceptive and smartly funny mockumentary “Abbott Elementary” may just teach them a lesson. The freshman series, a valentine to educators who overcome trials and tribulations to teach, is a leading Emmy nomination contender.
Set in a predominately Black, grossly underfunded grade school in Philadelphia, the series stars Quinta Brunson as an eager second-grade teacher who is one of the few educators who have made it to a second year at the school. Brunson also created the series which was inspired by her mother who was a teacher in Philly for 40 years. Reviews were glowing for the series. The L.A. Times critic Robert Lloyd wrote: “The series feels fresh even as it mines the familiar. As much as characters represent an agglomeration of types,...

Hesseman starred in all 90 episodes of “Wkrp in Cincinnati,” from 1978 to 1982, and returned to star in nine episodes of the series revival, “The New Wkrp in Cincinnati,” in the 90s. His character’s real name was John Caravella, and he was very big in the anti-disco movement.

Rhonda Fleming died last Wednesday in Santa Monica, California. The 97-year-old actress, who had left a successful 15-year career as a leading lady in studio films 60 years ago, was correctly noted in her obituaries as “the Queen of Technicolor” because of her flaming red hair, as well as her significant presence as a film noir actress, particularly in Jacques Tourneur’s masterpiece “Out of the Past” (1947).
Her films included a number of now-acclaimed auteurist titles like Budd Boetticher’s “The Killer Is Loose,” Allan Dwan’s “Slightly Scarlet” and “Tennessee’s Partner,” and Fritz Lang’s “While the City Sleeps,” to go along with more mainstream titles like “The Spiral Staircase” and “The Gunfight at O.K. Corral.”
Unlike actresses like Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Tippi Hedren, and others who made multiple films with Alfred Hitchcock, Fleming is less identified with the master. But he provided her with her breakout role in 1945’s “Spellbound.

Valerie Bertinelli first became a household name in 1975 when she played Barbara Cooper on the CBS sitcom “One Day at a Time” for nine seasons. While Mackenzie Phillips as older sis Julie was the rebellious daughter in a household headed by Bonnie Franklin‘s divorced mom, Bertinelli’s upbeat character was more adept at making wisecracks. She would earn two Golden Globes as Best TV Supporting Actress but never competed for an Emmy. Even when she starred in a string of popular TV movies in the ’80s and ’90s with such ripe titles as “I Was a Mail Order Bride,” “The Seduction of Gina” and “Shattered Vows,” she was overlooked by TV’s top acting honor.
Bertinelli, 59, would spend three years starting in 2001 as a heavenly being named Gloria on “Touched by an Angel” and more recently appeared on TV Land’s “Hot in Cleveland” for five seasons until 2015 alongside of Betty White,...

Because we invite them into our homes, TV series regulars have a way of feeling like friends or even family. That is certainly true of the gang from “One Day at a Time,” the Norman Lear-created comedy series that aired on CBS from 1975 to 1984. Bonnie Franklin, who played a divorced mom and career woman who was raising her two daughters solo, and Mackenzie Phillips, who was the defiant older teen Julie, were highly relatable. But it was Valerie Bertinelli, as quick-with-a-quip little sis Barbara, who became America’s sitcom sweetheart.
She would win two Golden Globes for as Best TV Supporting Actress for her role as Barbara Cooper. But even though the actress would go on to headline a series of popular made-for-tv movies in the ’80s and ’90s with such attention-grabbing titles as “The Princess and the Cabbie” and “The Seduction of Gina” before becoming a heavenly creature...

In the last shot of Alfred Hitchcock’s final (and underrated) “Family Plot,” impostor-psychic-turned-kidnapper Barbara Harris looks straight at the camera and winks. It was only time in Hitchcock’s career that he broke down the fourth wall, and the gesture felt like his goodbye to his fans.
Harris died August 21 at 83 of lung cancer. Her notable roles included “A Thousand Clowns,” “Nashville,” “The Seduction of Joe Tynan,” and a supporting actor Oscar nomination for “Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?” But for Hitchcock fans, her death reminds us that 42 years have passed since the master’s last film, and fewer of his actors are still alive.
It’s nearly impossible to track every actor who appeared in his work. (Anyone from Hitchcock’s early British films would have had to be a very small child.) However, there are still a number...

Litchfield Og Barb Denning should look very familiar - no matter what generation you're a part of. Mackenzie Phillips, who plays Orange Is the New Black's latest jailbird to rock the cage in Max, has been on the scene since her debut role as Carol in 1973's American Graffiti. She was only 12 when she landed the part and hasn't stopped acting since.
Phillips has an extensive résumé. After her breakout film role, she appeared in guest capacities on shows like The Love Boat and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Her most iconic role, however, came when she landed the part of Julie Cooper on One Day at a Time in 1975, a part she held until 1983. She later went on to appear as a different character in the Netflix reboot of One Day at a Time, which premiered in 2017.

Chicago – The irony is, of course, that actress Mackenzie Phillips was in a notable 1970s sitcom called “One Day at a Time,” and that phrase often describes the struggles of living with addiction. Phillips talked to HollywoodChicago.com about living that life at the “Hollywood Show” Chicago.
Mackenzie Phillips was born in Alexandria, Virginia, the daughter of The Mamas & the Papas singer John Phillips and his first wife, Susan Adams. She was in a band at the age of 12, and was spotted by a casting agent. She auditioned for the breakthrough George Lucas film, “American Graffiti,” and won the role of Carol. Three years later, she won her signature role, that of Julie Cooper on the long-running situation comedy “One Day at a Time,” co-starring Valerie Bertinelli and Bonnie Franklin.
