George Lucas Makes First Appearance At Comic-Con, Previews New L.A. Museum “A Temple To The People’s Art”
Image
It was arguably the first big Sunday Am panel post Covid at Comic-Con, as Star Wars creator George Lucas, 3x Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro and Oscar winning Death Becomes Her production designer Doug Chiang gathered to tease to a very packed Hall H, the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

For Lucas, it was the first time he’s appeared onstage at San Diego Comic-Con.

The panel was narrated by Oscar nominee Queen Latifah.

“It’s a temple to the people’s art,” said Lucas about the Mobius-strip building designed by Ma Yansong which is opening next year near the USC campus in downtown Los Angeles.

“I refused to sell it,” says Lucas whose been collecting myriad comic books and thrifty pieces of art since his youth.

One of Lucas’ inspirations for opening the museum stemmed from the filmmaker needing a place to display his 40,000 pieces of art.

Rewind: ‘Fire and Ice’ Review
Image
I recently re-watched and reviewed Hawk the Slayer, which was a fun, albeit utterly flawed piece of silly fantasy flim-flam. It had the sole intention of making money, which seems as likely as someone who goes out and spends all their money on lottery tickets.

None of the building blocks were in place to make a successful film.

Compare it to my reality TV pitch. A bunch of strangers, with no discernible talent or skills, meet on a beach and are given some hours in which to build a working submarine. The parts supplied for the contestants are not those of a submarine (the contestants do not know this). I wish them luck. In their watery tomb.

Fire and Ice was a 1983 film, brought to us by the Fantasy union of the twin towers of director Ralph Bakshi and fantasy art icon Frank Frazetta. Bakshi might not be to everyone...

Predator: Killer Of Killers Director Explains Why The Yautja Look So Different In The New Movie [Exclusive]
Image
Sci-fi fans, animation appreciators, and action junkies were all being fed well this past weekend, thanks to the gory joys of "Predator: Killer of Killers." The sixth film in the franchise truly took things far beyond where we've ever seen them go before -- and not just because this played out in animation, as opposed to the much more familiar live-action medium. In addition to the anthology setup, which smashes a trio of different time periods and characters together into a series of epic confrontations across the ages, the Yautja themselves underwent quite a facelift compared to how they've typically been depicted across the previous films. As it turns out, there's a very good reason for that.

"Killer of Killers" brings back "Prey" director Dan Trachtenberg, along with co-director Josh Wassung, and /Film's Ben Pearson recently had a chance to talk to Trachtenberg about the process of bringing this film to life.

Predator: Badlands director Dan Trachtenberg teases ‘big, crazy swing’ with sci-fi movie
‘Predator: Badlands’ director Dan Trachtenberg has teased he’s taken a "big, crazy swing" with the upcoming movie. The sci-fi flick will put the titular alien hunter at the forefront of the story as its hero, and the 43-year-old filmmaker has now promised ‘Predator: Badlands’ will be a unique take on the beloved action franchise. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Trachtenberg said: "It’s a big, crazy swing, and I think that’s what drives butts into seats."If you want the same old Predator experience, you can hit play on ‘Predator’ or ‘Prey’ or any other, whichever one is your fit."‘Predator: Badlands’ follows the young Predator Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) after he has been outcast from his clan and sent to a remote planet where he forms an unlikely alliance with Thia (Elle Fanning) as the pair search for the ultimate adversary. While the director didn’t reveal...

MTV's Intense Animated '90s Anti-Superhero Series Was An Antidote To Modern Tropes
Image
The early 1990s were an exciting time for animation. Throughout the 1980s, mainstream commercial cartoons had become, well, commercials, Many of them were owned by toy companies and only put into production to advertise toy products. New cartoon shows wouldn't be greenlit unless they possessed "marquee value," which is to say they were "established IPs" (to use the modern lingo).

This over-commercialization deeply branded a generation, but caused storytelling to suffer. Certain animators sick of the Reagan era began to branch out in the '90s, and the world experienced a sudden explosion of creativity. Animators like John Kricfalusi (whose achievements and gross misconduct alike are chronicled in the documentary "Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story") and Mike Judge began animating aggressively crude, playfully subversive shows like "The Ren & Stimpy Show" and "Beavis and Butt-head," respectively. Elsewhere, animation exhibitors Spike & Mike began touring theaters with both classic...

Solomon Kane: The Serpent Ring Q&a with Patrick Zircher
Image
Written and illustrated by Patrick Zircher, Solomon Kane: The Serpent Ring #1 will be released by Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures on March 26th. It's Solomon Kane's first solo series in fifteen years, and we recently caught up with Zircher, who told us all about the new series, his love Solomon Kane and the world of Robert E. Howard, and much more. We also have a preview of the first issue you can check out below!

What was your first exposure to Solomon Kane and the world of Robert E. Howard?

Patrick Zircher: The very first Howard-inspired stories? Mom would grab issues of Kull and bring them home. After reading those, I picked up the Conan the Barbarian comic. Then one day, practically exploding from the school library shelf, I saw the Conan paperbacks with the Frank Frazetta covers. The stories are great fun but also made me feel, when I was young,...

“Never Heard From Him Again!”: The Director Schwarzenegger Wanted For The Movie That Made His Career Told Him To Ditch His Signature Look
Image
The director Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted for his breakout movie, Conan the Barbarian, told the Austrian action legend he should change his signature look. Schwarzenegger first rose to prominence when he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Debut Acting in a Motion Picture for his appearance in 1976's Stay Hungry, before following it with the acclaimed bodybuilding docudrama Pumping Iron. His breakthrough role as an action icon came with 1982's John Milius sword-and-sorcery epic Conan the Barbarian, but the director could have been very different if things had gone to Schwarzenegger's original plan.

It seems that the Terminator 2 star originally wanted the project to be helmed by American animator and filmmaker Ralph Bakshi, who made the dark fantasy Fire and Ice and the animated 1978 epic The Lord of the Rings. In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Bakshi, now retired, revealed that Schwarzenegger took him to lunch to ask him...

The 15 Best Sword And Sorcery Movies, Ranked
Image
Fantasy is a hard nut to crack. Where science fiction can build on the rust and chrome of worlds we know, fantasy asks us to envision something new, often helped along by tidbits of real world history (as many fans of George R.R. Martin know quite well). To bring these worlds to life on screen requires more magic than words on a page, making the special effects budget blow the king's purse wide open.

When it works, it's something special. We get to see impossible worlds, meet cultures and countries where the riddle of steel and the law of chivalry thrive. We take to skies full of dragons, and sandy deserts full of bandits. Of this grand niche, the sword and sorcery movie is the most approachable, with a down to earth ruffian flair. The distinction between this and high fantasy is slim, but for our purposes, if the world...

Mark Hamill Voiced An Elf In This Dark, 1970s Animated Film By The Lord Of The Rings Director
Image
Despite overshadowing by later works, Wizards is a standout sci-fi film that deserves more recognition for its dark themes and animation. Wizards' detailed backgrounds and unique character designs showcase Bakshi's masterclass in animation, utilizing rotoscoping effectively. Mark Hamill's role as an elf in Wizards should not be overlooked, showcasing his early talent in voice acting before his iconic role as Luke Skywalker.

Although Mark Hamill is immediately recognizable for his 1977 performance as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, another movie from the same year actually showed off his talents as a voice actor. Like Hamill, animator Ralph Bakshi is best-known for his work on a major Hollywood IP in this case, the somewhat notorious animated Lord of the Rings movies. However, while this project arguably came to define his career, it is his 1977 film Wizards featuring Mark Hamill that deserves greater recognition.

Wizards centers around the clash between a...

How Star Wars Was Partly Inspired by Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon
Image
The Buck Rogers comic strip set the stage for Star Wars, inspiring George Lucas to create his own galactic saga. Lucas honed his filmmaking skills with American Graffiti before pursuing his dream of making big-budget sci-fi. Collaboration with colleagues and advice from industry veterans shaped Star Wars into the iconic franchise we know today.

"The more things change, the more they stay the same," French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr wrote in 1849. During the following century, a real-life epoch that proved the quote true was set in motion when writer Philip Francis Nowlan created a character known as Anthony Rogers for his 1928 novella Armageddon 2419 Ad. The following year, the character would be reconstituted for the Buck Rogers comic strip, moving from literary side note to a hugely successful comic with a nearly 4-decade run that inspired countless radio and television serials. The comic would heavily influence a generation of sci-fi filmmakers,...

Disney's The Black Cauldron Could Have Looked A Lot More Like Nightmare Before Christmas
Image
The late '70s were a dark time for Disney. Following the death of Walt Disney, the studio went through much experimentation (not all of which was successful), and the departure of animator Don Bluth and several other animators led to a mini-crisis at the studio. Still, this was a very interesting time for Disney, which released many movies unlike anything they'd made before or since, from the sci-fi adventure "The Black Hole" to the criminally underrated "The Black Cauldron."

Loosely based on the first two books in Lloyd Alexander's "The Chronicles of Prydain" series, the film follows a bard and a princess who try to destroy a powerful and ancient magical cauldron before the wicked Horned King uses it to rule the world. This is by far the darkest animated movie Disney has made, one that starts with an explanation that the Black Cauldron's power comes from an...

There's A Brutal Unfinished Animated Conan The Barbarian Film The World Has Never Seen
Image
The adventures of Conan the Barbarian are not, in their purest form, for children. Created by pulp author Robert E. Howard in 1932, the Cimmerian warrior inhabits a cruel world ruled by those who are handiest with a sword or endowed with the power of sorcery. Though Conan is uncommonly chivalric, he is utterly ruthless in combat — and Howard's battle scenes are described in invigoratingly vicious detail. There are impalements and beheadings and wholesale eviscerations. There are also orgies and elements of bondage. But the presence of wizards and dragons and all kinds of nasty monsters means Conan's tales are catnip for kids.

There have been efforts to tone down the sex and violence of Conan's tales, but they are essential to his appeal. Howard wrote with a boundless fury; he roared and raged as he bashed away at his typewriter. The savagery is the point. If you want sanitized, kid-friendly fantasy,...

Fire and Ice: Revisited Ralph Bakshi’s Animated Epic
Image
Animation and fantasy go hand in hand. In the 80s, there was a boom of fantasy epics in the land of cartoons that had nothing to do with the House of Mouse and everything to do with adult content. This was helped along from the previous decade by creator Ralph Bakshi, who had started things off with Fritz the Cat and would be the first to do a feature-length version of Lord of The Rings with his animated film and the trippy flick Wizards (and later – the cult film Cool World).

During our fave decade, Anime would find a welcoming home in the US with several classics that would be released during that time. Canada would also get into the mix with Heavy Metal (which we’ll get to.) But Ralph Bakshi decided to join forces with one of the biggest names in fantasy art for a new entry into...

Rebel Moon Review
Image
Plot: In a dark corner of the universe controlled by a Fascist regime called The Motherworld, a former soldier named Kora (Sofia Boutella) tries to escape her past by living as a simple farmer on a peaceful moon called The Veldt. When that moon is invaded by The Motherworld and her friends are threatened, Kora sets off to recruit an army of soldiers to battle with the Motherworld and end their tyranny.

Review: Take Star Wars, a liberal amount of Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven, and Battle Beyond the Stars, and mix it in with a heavy helping of Heavy Metal (both the magazine and the film), and you end up with Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. While a bit overstuffed (Snyder maybe made it a little too lean at just over two hours), it’s nonetheless a deliriously entertaining sci-fi epic that one could easily call the Best Star Wars Movie Never Made.

Appreciating the Darkness of Don Bluth’s ‘The Secret of Nimh’
Image
There’s a common misconception that art directed towards children is automatically less dignified than art aimed at other demographics. And with so many people mistakenly believing that animation is exclusively meant to entertain kids, it makes sense that audiences and critics often dismiss animated films as if it were impossible for them to contain anything of substance. Of course, the simplest stories are often the hardest ones to tell, and having your film be marketed towards kids doesn’t mean that it should feel like it was written by them.

One of my personal favorite examples of an animated movie that delves into much deeper (and darker) subject matter than your average cartoon is Don Bluth’s directorial debut, The Secret of Nimh. A dark fantasy fable about talking mice, this 1982 adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh takes fascinating liberties with the...

John Carpenter’s Halloween Celebrates its 45th Anniversary With New Posters
Image
Celebrate the 45th anniversary of Halloween with limited edition art prints featuring Michael Myers, available at the H45 convention or online. The limited edition print is priced at $90, while the timed edition print can be purchased for $75. Both are 36"x24" and signed by the artist. The artwork for the posters was initially created for Spooky Pinball's Halloween pinball game and painstakingly recreated to accurately represent the original painting.

Michael Myers comes home again in brand-new artwork. A pair of stunning posters created by artist Jason Edmiston celebrates the 45th anniversary of John Carpenter’s 1978 slasher film Halloween. Both pieces of art feature the Halloween franchise’s iconic boogeyman: one is a specifically timed edition, while the other is a limited edition available only at the upcoming H45: 45 Years of Terror convention being held this weekend in Pasadena, California. Tool’s Adam Jones Unveils Epiphone Les Paul Guitar Featuring Artwork by His Wife Korin Faught
Image
Adam Jones has teamed up with Epiphone for the Les Paul Custom Art Collection. The latest guitar in the collection features artwork by the Tool guitarist’s wife, Korin Faught.

Faught’s original painting “Sensation” adorns the back of the fifth guitar in the collection, perhaps the crown jewel of the new Epiphone line. The stunning piece first premiered as part of the “Lost Days” exhibition in October 2016 at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles.

“‘Sensation’ is a painting about the loneliness and isolation of illness,” Faught mused via a press release for the guitars. “‘Sensation’ is a word to replace a fear based word. A word she learned while preparing for childbirth. A word she could retreat into when lying in bed with only herself and her thoughts. Gentle meditative properties and calmness resonate through her body as she lives within the moment.”

Before Motu: Revelation, He-Man Had a Now-Forgotten Sequel Series
Image
The Masters of the Universe franchise and its original cartoon continuity came slashing back to life thanks to the Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Not only was a new CGI He-Man series promptly made for a younger audience, but a sequel to Revelation is now in the works. Before either of these shows was conceived, however, there was another attempt to revive Mattel's most powerful man in the universe.

The New Adventures of He-Man was a 1990 attempt to restore the once glorious series to its former luster. This involved sending Prince Adam's alter ego away from Eternia and into a new, far more futuristic setting. Sadly, the desired effect wasn't achieved, with the show failing to interest fans. Now, it's rarely remembered, with the Netflix series officially replacing it as a sequel.

He-Man: Unused Moebius Art Designs That Could be Resurrected for a New Masters of the Universe Movie
Image
On July 18, it was reported by Variety that Netflix was canceling its live-action He-Man movie, swallowing a $30 million loss from pre-production. While this most likely has to do with the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes, the silver lining is that in the wake of the success of Barbie, Mattel will be more likely to find a studio interested in a theatrical He-Man movie.

He-Man has been in development hell seemingly as long as the internet has existed. The 1987 movie was one of the first movies to feature a post-credits scene teasing a sequel. The sequel never materialized. Fans thought the success of Transformers would lead to more toy-line movies. It did not happen. Then fans saw hope for He-Man when Marvel and DC movies began their shared universes, but more ‘80s cartoons/toys did not get the same treatment. Now, Barbie and Mario Bros. have consumed the pop culture zeitgeist...

Eden’S End: Grant Morrison’s Secret History of Man & Superman is a Stunning Epic (Review)
Image
Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp have just released their latest comic project, and it's breathtaking in its scope. The epic short Eden’s End manages to tell the secret history of man and superman in a mere fifteen pages.

Morrison launched a Substack newsletter at the beginning of 2022, where they have proceeded to provide annotations of their previous work in addition to running short comics and other projects. Morrison is now using the platform to launch their latest comics work with their Green Lantern collaborator Liam Sharp: a series of fifteen-page stories Morrison has dubbed “Hollywood pitch comics” in a densely-compressed format of square-shaped pages roughly the size of a 12” LP record. The series is called Xanaduum Presents, and Eden's End is the first installment: a sci-fi/fantasy parable about the origins of humanity itself.

Dynamite Announces Writer and Artist for Fire and Ice Prequel Comics
Image
Last year, Dynamite Comics announced that they were expanding the world of Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta’s cult fantasy, Fire and Ice, in comic book form. Now, the publisher has announced who will be picking up the torch! The first issue of the comic is set to release in August of this year, and will be written by Eisner Award winning Bill Willingham and drawn by Leonardo Manco. Willingham shares his excitement with Dynamite below.

"I discovered both Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi at an early age. My awareness of Frazetta cemented the first time someone put a Conan book into my hands. I discovered Bakshi when almost everyone did, when the film Wizards was released. I was in college at the time and working a number of jobs to be able to afford it. One of those jobs was at a local movie theater. I got to see it about a dozen times,...

Pussy Riot Tell Putin to ‘Put It in a Dick Cage’ on New Song

Boys Noize and Pussy Riot have a simple message for Putin and the rest of the patriarchy: “Put it in a dick cage.” On “Chastity,” their new joint single, which also features Alice Glass, they play with sexual power dynamics – “When I say ‘sit,’ you sit/When I say ‘crawl,’ you crawl” – over burbling, clubby synths all leading to the chorus/punchline: “You can make me love you if you … put it in a dick cage.”

The track’s video features scenes that look like they came out of vintage movies,...

In Praise Of The Poster For Army Of Darkness, One Of The Greatest One-Sheets Of All Time
Image
Even in the age of streaming, the movie poster is an essential component of prerelease marketing campaigns, aimed either at getting you to the theater or — these days — getting you to click play. As we approach the 30th anniversary of Sam Raimi's sword-and-sorcery comedy "Army of Darkness," we look back on its iconic poster art, one that star Bruce Campbell reckons he's signed a hundred million times.

The third of Raimi's blood-soaked "Evil Dead" series, "Army of Darkness" flopped at the box office in early '93, simultaneously too weird to seduce new fans and too confusing for those who were expecting more cabin-in-the-woods mayhem. Since then, it has exploded in popularity on home video and gained a cult following, gathering its foothold in the pop culture consciousness by its endless supply of quotes, spectacular production design and practical effects, and a classic movie poster immortalizing its hero in...

Jean-Luc Godard Told His ‘King Lear’ Star Molly Ringwald He Didn’t Like ‘Pulp Fiction’: ‘Not Authentic’
Image
Jean-Luc Godard only had contempt for Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction.”

Godard told “King Lear” actress Molly Ringwald that “Pulp Fiction” lacked truth, despite being one of the most popular films of 1994 and winning Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. Yet Godard was unimpressed while in conversation with Ringwald.

“We chatted about recent films. He didn’t think much of ‘Pulp Fiction,’ the movie of the moment,” Ringwald recalled in a New Yorker essay, noting that they stayed in touch after the 1987 “King Lear.” “‘Not authentic,’ he declared. (That word again!) However, we both liked ‘Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould,’ a more obscure film by the French Canadian director François Girard.”

Ringwald played Cordelia in Godard’s “King Lear” and stressed authenticity on set.

“When I watch ‘King Lear’ now, I’m struck by how extremely still and vigilant I seem,” Ringwald wrote. “My back is straight and...

Ray Bradbury's Classic Comic Stories Return in 'Home To Stay' Collection
Image
A new comic collection called Home to Stay is compiling every EC Comics adaptation of legendary author Ray Bradbury's stories for the first time ever. Ray Bradbury changed the landscape for science-fiction storytelling in the 20th century. His novel Fahrenheit 451 continues to inspire to this day as one of the most important dystopian stories in literature, with many putting it on the same level as George Orwell's 1984 and other sci-fi classics. Several of his other novels are still beloved today like Something Wicked This Way Comes and The Halloween Tree. Bradbury's work is legendary, but not many fans know that his tales found their way into the world of comics.

During the height of EC Comics' popularity in the mid-1950s, several of Ray Bradbury's stories were adapted by Al Feldstein for comic readers. This opened a whole new audience to the work of Ray Bradbury during...

Promoting Army Of Darkness Was A Pain In The Neck For Bruce Campbell
Image
If you think two independent, ultra-gory, unrated horror movies getting a big(ger) budget third sequel made by a major Hollywood studio sounds unlikely, then let me remind you of a little movie called "Army of Darkness?" Strange but true — the follow-up to "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2" (subtitled "Dead By Dawn" if ya nasty) is a lightly-r-rated affair that sees hapless hero Ash (Bruce Campbell) thrust into a fantasized version of the Middle Ages, one that tones down the gushing blood and bodily dismemberment of the prior films before replacing them with rampaging skeletons and exploding catapults ... and it was made by Universal Pictures.

It's a sequel that is equal parts expensive as it is expansive, especially for a franchise that began as the quintessential "cabin in the woods" horror film. In addition to Universal footing the bills for the movie, they were also in charge of distributing and marketing it.

‘Guns Akimbo’ Filmmaker Jason Howden Prepping ‘Monsters Of Metal’ Film Based On His First Comic Series For Opus
Image
Exclusive: Jason Howden (Guns Akimbo) will co-write and direct a film adaptation of his first comic series Monsters of Metal, which launches with its first issue via Opus Comics on October 19.

Penned by Howden and Llexi Leon (Iron Maiden’s “Speed of Light”), who founded Opus Comics and its parent company Incendium, the comic was conceived as an R-rated mockumentary — a cross between Spinal Tap and The Monster Squad, which sees a group of beloved horror icons team up to form a heavy metal band.

Frankenstein’s monster (named Frank) and his bandmates Medusa, Jack O’Lantern, Werewolf and the Bride have spent the last few centuries squatting in Dracula’s castle – unbeknown to their slumbering host. But after a band rehearsal gets out of hand and wakes the fearsome vamp, the group gets booted from the castle and are forced to hit the road. As Frank and the band take their act on tour,...
