Brad Pitt’s Rare ‘F’ CinemaScore Movie Starred The Greatest TV Actor That Dismantled Capitalism
Image
Brad Pitt’s Killing Them Softly wasn’t exactly a crowd-pleaser upon its release, as despite garnering a fresh rating from critics on the Tomatometer, the movie holds an F grade on CinemaScore, which only 21 movies have earned so far. This isn’t to say the movie wasn’t well-made, quite the opposite. Boasting a cast of Pitt, Ray Liotta, and James Gandolfini, arguably the greatest TV actors of this century, known for his incredible work as the protagonist in The Sopranos, it perfectly reflects the post-2008 financial crisis cynicism.

Directed by Andrew Dominik and shot by Greig Fraser, now a prominent name in Hollywood, the movie proves to be a gritty commentary on the reality of the American dream through the cynical lens of Pitt’s hit man, Jackie.

While a mob drama on paper, the mob syndicate in the movie mirrors the real-life reflections of 2008’s crisis, and...

'Dune 3' Gets an Official Title, IMAX Cameras Confirmed
Image
The next Dunefilm is set to film later this year with Timothée Chalamet back in the starring role, who was recently seen rocking a new haircut for the film. The official title and some key production details have now been revealed, the former of which comes as a surprise after a year's worth of reporting.

According to Variety, the third Dune movie will be titled Dune: Part Three. It might be a bit obvious at first, but for those who have been paying close attention to reporting on the sequel, Dune: Messiah has been the projected title since last year. Although it will follow the events of the Messiah novel, it appears Denis Villeneuve is keeping things simple the third time around. The follow-up will feature a time jump and take place several years after Paul Atreides took control of the Empire. It is also set to feature the children...

Dune 3 Set To Be The Second Movie Ever To Achieve This IMAX Feat (After A Christopher Nolan Epic)
Image
IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond has revealed an exciting new detail about Dune 3. Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two was one of the most critically and commercially successful movies of 2024, and thankfully the acclaimed filmmaker will return to direct the third movie. The upcoming Dune: Part Three will be Villeneuve's last film in the sci-fi franchise, but it seems like it will be the biggest entry yet.

Timothée Chalamet will reprise his role as Paul Atreides in the third movie. His character will serve as the Emperor in the next entry, but based on the ending of Dune: Part Two, the Bene Gesserit and even Zendaya's Chani will likely conspire to dethrone him. This will make for an epic conclusion to the trilogy, which Villeneuve will shoot entirely with IMAX cameras.

In an interview with CNBC, Gelfond revealed that the entirety of Dune 3 will be shot with IMAX cameras,...

The Batman Fans Need To Watch The Director's Horror Masterpiece While They Wait For The Sequel
Image
When I watch "The Batman," I never want it to end. Even three hours isn't enough time in this world, and the spin-off show "The Penguin" could only tide me over so much. Even "The Penguin" setting the stage for "The Batman Part II" is bittersweet because that sequel remains years away.

Matt Reeves' "The Batman Part II" has been delayed several times. The movie is currently set to open October 1, 2027, but DC Studios co-chief James Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that he hadn't seen Reeves' script as of the end of March 2025.

It's easy to feel cynical right now. On top of these delays, Gunn is reimagining the DC Universe on film and it's difficult to see Reeves and actor Robert Pattinson's Batman fitting into that. DC Studios has even announced a different Batman movie, "The Brave and the Bold," featuring Bruce Wayne and his son Damian/Robin.

The film follows a molecular biologist-turned middle school science teacher played by Ryan Gosling who is tasked with traveling almost 12 light years from Earth to figure out a way to stop the Sun from dying. If that isn’t enough to worry about, he also runs into alien life right as his journey begins.

Here’s what we know so far about “Project Hail Mary.”

When does “Project Hail Mary” come out?

“Project Hail Mary” debuts in theaters on March 20, 2026. It’s one of 14 films Amazon MGM Studios plans to release in theaters in 2026.

What is “Project Hail Mary” about?

Brad Pitt’s Notorious F CinemaScore Thriller Box Office Bomb Gets Outgrossed 4 Times by ‘F1’ in Just One Weekend
Image
In a way, both the crime thriller Killing them Softly and the sports drama F1 are about capitalism. One of them features a central character who isn't in it for the riches, while the other film ends with the protagonist literally demanding the money that's owed to him. Both movies star Brad Pittin the lead role, but only one of them has been successful. This weekend, F1generated nearly $150 million at the global box office, on the back of positive reviews and near-unanimous praise from audiences. At the same time, it ended up lapping Killing them Softly's entire box office haul four times in just three days. The crime thriller debuted back in 2012, received straight-up hate from audiences, and concluded its run with less than $40 million globally.

It was, however, a film of uncommonly high pedigree. Directed by Andrew Dominik, Killing them Softlycompeted for the prestigious Palme d'Or at...

‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer: Ryan Gosling Leads Amazon’s Sci-Fi Flick
Image
Amazon MGM has released the first trailer for Project Hail Mary.

The sci-fi comedy stars Ryan Gosling, who plays a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace (Gosling), who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.

The Phil Lord and Chris Miller-directed space adventure is based on the Andy Weir bestseller of the same name.

Amazon MGM showed footage from the film at their CinemaCon presentation in April. Gosling was present and called the film an “insanely ambitious story, massive in scope.” It was so big, “we tried to put it on a TV once, it wouldn’t fit,” he said.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the first trailer for Project Hail Mary has finally landed! In it, we find Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling lost in space as a hapless 6th-grade science teacher tasked with saving the world.

Based on Andy Weir's New York Times best-selling novel of the same name, the movie is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative masterminds behind Sony Pictures' animated Spider-Verse trilogy. Drew Goddard, who wrote the big screen adaptation of Weir's The Martian, penned the script, and the impressive cast also includes Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Bastian Antonio Fuentes, Isla McRae, and James Wright.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer: Ryan Gosling Is a Science Teacher Trapped in Space
Image
Ryan Gosling puts the “not” in “astronaut” in the first trailer for “Project Hail Mary,” Amazon MGM Studios’ adaptation of the Andy Weir novel of the same name. The film hails from “Jump Street” and “Spider-Verse” filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, with “The Martian” screenwriter Drew Goddard on script duties for a story that’s not entirely dissimilar from that previous Weir adaptation starring Matt Damon.

Gosling plays a middle school science teacher whom an international group enlists as humanity’s last hope — he is to travel 11.9 million light-years as Earth faces extinction with the Sun dying out.

Set to Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times” and showing off some eye-popping cinematography by Oscar-winning “Dune” and “The Batman” Dp Greig Fraser, the trailer boasts a mix of humor and humanity that is a hallmark of Lord and Miller’s filmography.

Speaking of, this marks Lord and Miller’s first...

Extended ‘Project Hail Mary’ trailer screens at CinemaCon: Ryan Gosling tries to save the universe for Lord and Miller
Image
Amazon MGM Studios started its inaugural CinemaCon presentation with a bang: the first trailer for Project Hail Mary, a new science-fiction feature from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with Ryan Gosling in the lead role.

The movie is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir (The Martian) with a script from Drew Goddard. As revealed in the trailer — and likely familiar to anyone who has read Weir’s best-selling book — Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut sent on a longshot mission to save the planet as the sun begins to die. Ryland, the lone survivor of the trip, eventually comes face-to-face with an alien who similarly wants to save the universe.

The trailer, set to Harry Styles’s “Sign of the Times,” showcased Lord and Miller’s bold vision and blended science-fiction spectacle and future dread straight out of Interstellar with Ridley Scott's The Martian—not a...

‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer: Ryan Gosling Goes on a Suicide Mission to Save the Sun in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Sci-Fi Spectacle
Image
Amazon MGM Studios’ CinemaCon presentation began on Wednesday night with a look at the first trailer for Ryan Gosling’s “Project Hail Mary.”

The filmed-for-IMAX movie from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel by the same name. Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up from a coma and finds himself alone on a space station — with absolutely no memory of how (or why) he got there.

On Earth, Sandra Hüller’s character recruits a reluctant Grace who complains “I put the not in astronaut. I can’t even moonwalk.”

“The whole world is counting on you,” she says. Scenes ensue on the space ship called “Hail Mary.”

The character’s memory begins to return over time. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until...

Jason Momoa Returns to Arrakis as 'Fast X' Star Joins 'Dune: Messiah'
Image
Jason Momoa is officially returning to the sands of Arrakis, according to the man himself. The Fast X star will reprise his role as Duncan Idaho in Dune: Messiah, the highly anticipated sequel to Dune: Part Two from director Denis Villeneuve. Although Idaho met his end in Dune, fans of Frank Herbert’s original novels won’t be surprised by his return. In Dune: Messiah, Idaho is resurrected as a ghola, a genetically engineered clone, and plays a crucial role in a conspiracy against Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet). Poor Paul, he loves Duncan so much. The plot will focus on Paul’s struggle as Emperor, burdened by the religious fervour surrounding his rule and the devastating jihad waged in his name. Momoa delivered the news to EW while promoting his upcoming role in Minecraft:

Everything We Know About ‘Dune: Messiah’
Image
Last year's release of Denis Villenueve's epic blockbuster sequel, Dune: Part Two, met widespread critical and audience acclaim along with overwhelming box-office returns. But the famed director isn't finished with Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi universe just yet. He is already developing his highly-anticipated film-trilogy finale: Dune: Messiah.

Despite there being six books in the main series, Villeneuve doesn't intend to make any more Dune movies beyond this upcoming threequel. Regardless, his films have brought Herbert's original characters and story to life in a way that hasn't been accomplished before in theaters, so it's no wonder die-hard fans are already itching for more. Here's everything we know so far about his third, and final, installment, Dune: Messiah — from production updates to the expected plot — so everyone can get just as excited as we are to see Paul Atreides' character arc brought to a satisfying end.

The Best Robert Pattinson Movies, Ranked
Image
Robert Pattinson has become one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. That is due, of course, partly to his casting as pop cultural icon Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.” It is also thanks to Pattinson’s willingness to take risks and push himself. Over the years, he has managed to outgrow his work in the “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” franchises and establish himself as an actor whose films are not only worth taking seriously but actively seeking out.

In his latest film, writer-director Bong Joon-ho‘s “Mickey 17,” Pattinson plays over a dozen different versions of the same poor sap. It is a fearless swing from an actor who has built his career by always aiming for the fences. So, without further do, here are Pattinson’s seven best films, ranked.

Are Dune's Chani And Stilgar Related?
Image
Denis Villenueve inarguably accomplished an impressive feat with his first two "Dune" movies. Finally giving Frank Herbert's supposedly "unfilmable" 1965 novel a worthy big screen adaptation, the French Canadian filmmaker somehow managed to craft his own unique vision while staying true to the author's original story.

Villeneueve was clearly loyal to Herbert's writing but wasn't so precious about it that his movies didn't make changes to the novel. In places, the director and his team were able to make their own creative decisions, such as when production designer Patrice Vermette based the look of the Emperor Shaddam's tent on a Rolex watch. Elsewhere, cinematographer Greig Fraser shot the exterior of the Harkonnen home planet Giedi Prime with infrared cameras to produce a monochrome image that reflected the black sun-drenched surface of the world. These were all creative decisions the team had to make in order to bring Herbert's words to life in a visual medium.

Dune: Part Two earned widespread acclaim in 2024, praised for its massive scope, set pieces, and political intrigue. The sequel completes director Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's first Dune novel, effectively adapting the back half of the book. If the 2021 film didn't do so already, this sequel establishes the series as a cinematic franchise that is not to be missed. With the new Dune movies introducing the sci-fi epic to a new generation of fans, audiences are bound to have questions about the most recent film—especially with Villeneuve's adaptation of Dune Messiah on the way.

The 2025 Oscar Craft Races: Who Will Win, Who Should Win
Image
Editor’s Note: On Februrary 27 this article was updated to reflect changes in our predictions for the Best Sound and Best Production Design categories.

When it comes to the “technical” categories, we all know what the Academy voters like: large-scale world-building, showy “look at me” uses of craft, period detail, and, ideally, especially for certain categories (like Best Editing and Cinematography), it helps to be the Best Picture front-runner. But those aren’t always the ingredients that make for the best filmmaking and visual and aural storytelling.

With final Oscar voting having wrapped, the IndieWire craft team looks at eight categories to see who is most likely to win and who we would pick if we had a vote. A few notes before we jump in.

The “Will Win” sections below are based on the latest predictions by IndieWire’s Bill Desowitz, the best craft and animation awards analyst in the business.

Kathleen Kennedy: One Recent Star Wars Movie Helped Perfect Many Technologies For Lucasfilm That “We now take for granted”
Image
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has recently made headlines with reports of her alleged plans to step down and retire by the year’s end. While there is no confirmation about Kennedy’s rumored exit, the prolific producer has undoubtedly been a key figure in shaping the galaxy far, far away for the past decade.

Amidst reports of Kennedy’s alleged exit plans, it might be worth taking note of the one technology developed under her regime that has now become commonplace in the Star Wars franchise. In an interview, Kennedy revealed how one of the best Star Wars movies of the recent era helped Lucasfilm perfect the volume technology, and here is what she had to say.

Oscar 2025 Winner Predictions: Cinematography
Image
We’ve put too much stock on the winners of the ASC prize in past years, like when we thought that Łukasz Żal’s cinematography for Cold War would persevere over Alfonso Cuarón’s for Roma on Oscar night. That particular pick was further justified by Paweł Pawlikowski’s nomination for his direction, as there’s a strong link between films winning in this category and their being nominated for directing and, especially, best picture.

Which is my way of saying that the only thing that was going to possibly prevent us from calling this race for Lol Crawley’s cinematography for The Brutalist was if the ASC went for Greig Fraser’s for Dune: Part Two, especially considering that Fraser won an Oscar for his work on the first Dune. But the ASC’s very ASC winner this year was Ed Lachman’s work on Maria, a result that...

4 Oscar-Nominated Cinematographers Analyze Pivotal Scenes from Their Films
Image
IndieWire invited the cinematographers from the Oscar-nominated films to choose and analyze a pivotal scene that best showcases their craft. Here are the four who were able to participate: Lol Crawley (“The Brutalist”), Greig Fraser (“Dune: Part Two”), Paul Guilhaume (“Emilia Pérez”), and Ed Lachman (“Maria”).

For Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” Crawley resurrected VistaVision, the higher resolution, wide-screen variant of 35mm popularized in the ’50s (“Vertigo”). The strategy worked visually and thematically for a maximalist approach to this post-war immigrant drama about Holocaust survivor and visionary architect László Tóth (Best Actor nominee Adrien Brody). It brilliantly showed off the Brutalist style of Tóth’s work as an expression of his post-war trauma, with its massive blocks of concrete and steel. Additionally, the format provided a wider field of view of the compositions.

“Dune” Oscar winner Fraser returns with “Dune: Part Two,” Denis Villeneuve’s more lavish, action-packed sequel, in...

Maria Dominates as Edward Lachman Wins Big at the 2025 ASC Awards
Edward Lachman
Edward Lachman, Jomo Fray, and Sam McCurdy take home top honors at the 39th annual ASC Awards, while ‘Maria’ and ‘Nickel Boys’ stand out among the winners.

Edward Lachman won his first ASC Award for Maria, beating out Greg Frasier for Dune: Part Two and Lol Crawley for The Brutalist at the 39th annual ASC Awards, held on February 23 at The Beverly Hilton. Lachman’s surprise win comes after five previous nominations, marking a long-awaited achievement in his career.

Maria, Lachman’s collaboration with director Pablo Larraín, focuses on the final days of opera singer Maria Callas, reflecting on her life and the challenges of maintaining her voice. To capture this story, Lachman utilized Kodak film in 35mm, 16mm, and Super 8, shooting in both color and black-and-white stock. This film is part of Larraín’s Important Women Trilogy, alongside Jackie and Spencer.

Other notable winners included Robert Elswit for Ripley in the Limited Series category,...

‘Maria,’ ‘Nickel Boys,’ ‘Shōgun,’ and More Win at the 2025 ASC Awards
Image
“Maria” cinematographer Edward Lachman won the Feature Film prize at the 39th annual ASC Awards, February 23 at The Beverly Hilton. His surprise win beat out Academy Award favorites “Dune: Part Two” (Greig Fraser) and “The Brutalist” (Lol Crawley), as well as “Nosferatu” (Jarin Blaschke), “Conclave” (Stéphane Fontaine), “A Complete Unknown” (Phedon Papamichael), and “Wicked” (Alice Brooks). The expanded list was due to how close the percentage of voting was.

This marks Lachman’s first win after five nominations at the ASC Awards. He was previously nominated for his work with Todd Haynes on “Mildred Pierce,” “Far From Heaven,” and “Carol,” as well as his previous effort with Pablo Larraín, “El Conde.” His second project with the Chilean filmmaker, “Maria,” follows the last days of opera singer Maria Callas as she reflects on her life and the struggle of maintaining her own voice. It serves as a culmination of Larraín’s “Important Women” Trilogy,...

‘Maria’s’ Edward Lachman Wins Top Honors at American Society of Cinematographers Awards
Image
Edward Lachman has taken top honors at the 39th annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards for his work on “Maria.”

In a competitive year, the ASC nominated seven cinematographers in the feature film category. The last time the field expanded beyond five was in 2014. The other nominees are Lol Crawley for “The Brutalist,” Phedon Papamichael for “A Complete Unknown,” Stéphane Fontaine for “Conclave,” Greig Fraser for “Dune: Part 2,” Jarin Blaschke for “Nosferatu,” and Alice Brooks for “Wicked.”

In its 38-year history, only 18 have gone on to win the Oscar. Last year, Hoyte Van Hoytema won the ASC for “Oppenheimer” and went on to win the Oscar.

In TV, winners included Robert Elswit for “Ripley.” Elswit won the Creative Art Emmy last year. Speaking with Variety for Inside the Frame, Elswit spoke about shooting the black and white limited series. He said, “Lighting was important. It needed to reflect who...

The ASC’s Theatrical Feature Film prize winner has gone on to claim the Best Cinematography Oscar nearly half of the time — 18 times in its 38 years — including Hoyte van Hoytema for Oppenheimer last year. Maria also is up for the Best Cinematography Oscar, which is its only nomination. Lachman will vie for the prize against Lol Crawley (The Brutalist), Greig Fraser (Dune: Part Two) Paul Guilhaume (Emilia Pérez) and Jarin Blaschke (Nosferatu). All five also were up for the ASC Award tonight.

Rumors Suggest Jason Momoa’s Return as Duncan Idaho in ‘Dune: Messiah’
Image
In an exciting update for ‘Dune‘ fans, Jeff Sneider of The Hot Mic reports that Jason Momoa is set to return as Duncan Idaho in the highly anticipated sequel ‘Dune: Messiah.’

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film will continue the saga where Duncan Idaho is resurrected as a ghola—a clone created from genetic material, aligning with Frank Herbert’s original storyline.

Fans of the book will already be familiar with Duncan Idaho’s unique journey in ‘Dune: Messiah,’ but for those new to the story, we’ll avoid revealing too much about how his return unfolds. Suffice it to say, his resurrection plays a crucial role in the intricate political and philosophical conflicts that define this chapter of the saga.

The plot of ‘Dune: Messiah’ thickens as Timothee Chalamet’s character, Paul Atreides, finds himself overwhelmed by the religious zeal and ongoing jihad he’s tied to.

Amidst this chaos,...

‘Wicked’ Cinematographer Alice Brooks Seeks a Place in ASC History
Image
No woman has even won an Oscar for best cinematography, and that’s not likely to change in 2025. Why? Because no women made the final five. But this year, the American Society of Cinematographers could be righting Oscar’s wrong.

ASC has only handed out the top prize once to a woman — Mandy Walker, who won in the feature competition in 2023 for “Elvis.” Now, for the first time since 2014, the feature competition field has expanded its nominees to seven, with Alice Brooks landing a nomination for her work on “Wicked.”

Brooks had one goal for the big screen adaptation of the hit musical, that “it would be the most beautiful love story between these two women,” she says, referring to Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who star as the famous witches of Oz.

Brooks is Jon M. Chu’s go-to Dp since their filmmaking days at the University of Southern California.

‘Dune: Part Two’ Cinematographer Greig Fraser’s Work Is Pretty Enough to Hang on a Wall – So They Did
Image
“Dune: Part Two” cinematographer Greig Fraser’s work on Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the classic Frank Herbert sci-fi novel is so beautiful, every image he shot could be framed and hung on a wall — so that is exactly what they did.

A brand-new exhibit, Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Exposures,” runs until the end of the month at the Leica Gallery in Los Angeles, and highlights the work of the cinematographer (currently nominated for an Academy Award for his work). Along with photographs taken by Fraser, the exhibition features text by “Dune” star Josh Brolin.

TheWrap walked around the exhibit with Fraser, who talked about what the shoots were like, what made “Dune: Part Two” different and what his next challenge will be.

[Indicating to image of Rebecca Ferguson, hunched over, with Villeneuve talking to her] Where is this? I imagine in the big pyramid on Arrakis?

Mary Parent Knows How to Produce Big, Artful Movies Like Oscar Contender ‘Dune: Part Two’
Image
Mary Parent has seen it all. Since her youthful days hanging with current Warner Bros. co-chairs Michael DeLuca and Pamela Abdy at New Line Cinema, she has worked her way up the ranks at Universal Pictures, where she and Scott Stuber ran the movie division, to her own production shingle, Disruption Entertainment, which currently co-produces with Legendary Entertainment. Among many other things, Parent produced Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” series, A.G. Iñárritu’s Oscar-winning “The Revenant,” and the Monsterverse movies including blockbuster “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($572 million worldwide).

But the films consuming most of her attention over the past few years are Denis Villeneuve’s ongoing “Dune” trilogy (Warner Bros./Legendary). She oversees all the films at Legendary, but on some projects like “Dune,” which she sold to Legendary three years before she joined the company, she’s an on-the- ground producer.

Part One scored $429 million...

Conclave, Anora And The Brutalist Score Big At The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards –– See The Full List Of Winners
Image
The Ee BAFTA Film Awards happened this evening at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted once more by David Tennant.

Poking fun at Trump during his monologue, Tennant also offered the usual celebrity gags and had several stars singing part of The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)".

Cautioning audience members that there would not be an intermission as with nominated epic The Brutalist, Tennant also admonished winners to "keep your speeches the opposite of your films: nice and short."

A somewhat surprising addition to the night (though perhaps not given their presence on the soundtracks for both Better Man and Anora) was a performance of "Greatest Day" by Take That.

As for the winners, it was a good night for Conclave, which won Best Film, another Adapted Screenplay trophy for writer Peter Straughan, Best British Film and Editing and A Real Pain, which went home with Original Screenplay for...

Oscar-Nominated Cinematographers on Using Classic Techniques and Old Tech for a Modern Feel
Image
It’s ironic that a quarter of the way into the 21st century, when studios have seemingly accepted home streaming as their primary means of movie distribution, Dp Lol Crawley has earned an Oscar nomination for “The Brutalist,” shot on VistaVision, a widescreen film process developed by Paramount Pictures in 1954 to help lure viewers away from their living room TVs and into the theaters.

Used for such films as John Ford’s “The Searchers,” Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” VistaVision was designed as a competitor to 20th Century Fox’s Cinema- Scope, which employed an anamorphic lens to compress a widescreen image on to standard 35mm film stock.

“As opposed to pulling the film down vertically in a motion picture camera, it’s actually pulling it horizontally across eight perforations at a time,” explains Crawley. “So you end up with a bigger format,...

Visual Effects Society Awards: ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ topples ‘Dune: Part Two’ for top prize
Image
The Visual Effects Society just made the Oscar race for Best Visual Effects a lot more interesting, crowning Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as its choice for top Photoreal Feature Tuesday night at the 23rd Annual Ves Awards. The Apes win came over a field that included heavy Academy Awards favorite Dune: Part Two along with Better Man, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Twisters.

However, the Ves feature award turned out not to be such an accurate predictor of the Oscar winner a year ago, with The Creator winning at Ves, while Godzilla Minus One snared visual effects at the Academy Awards. Avatar: The Way of Water took home both in 2023.

The Apes victory was especially surprising in that it was the film’s only win of the night, while Dune otherwise dominated in tallying four wins, the most of any photoreal feature. Those included triumphs for Best Environment,...

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ Top Visual Effects Society Awards
Image
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the top feature prize at the 23rd Annual Visual Effects Society Awards and the one that most closely corresponds to the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. The celebration of achievement in visual effects took place on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The sci-fi primate sequel beat “Dune: Part Two,” which went into the evening with the most nominations (seven) and emerged with the most wins (four): Outstanding Achievement in a Photoreal Feature, Outstanding CG Cinematography, Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature and Outstanding Compositing & Lighting in a Feature.

The victory for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” does not necessarily make the film a frontrunner in the Oscars’ visual-effects race. Over the 22 years of Ves Awards, the winner went on to receive the Oscar 12 times, but the two groups have only matched three times in the last 10 years.

2025 Ves Winners Include ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ and ‘The Wild Robot’
Image
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won the top VFX prize for Best Photoreal Feature at the 23rd annual Visual Effects Society Awards, held February 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and hosted by The Sklar Brothers (“What We Do in the Shadows”). This marks the fourth Ves win for the “Apes” franchise and Wētā FX, which also took home the character award for the Robbie Williams CG chimp from “Better Man.”

But “Dune: Part Two” bolstered its status as the VFX Oscar frontrunner for Dneg by grabbing the most live-action awards with four: Oscar-nominated Greig Fraser’s CG cinematography for Arrakis, the Arrakeen Basin environment, simulations for atomic explosions and wormriding, and compositing and lighting.

However, DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” earned top animated film honors and also won four awards. “Civil War,” meanwhile, won the supporting VFX prize for Framestore.

“Shōgun” was named Best Photoreal Episode and snagged three...

Image
After two separate delays due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the 2025 Critics Choice Awards have all finally been handed out. The winners list provides another indicator of the strength of several films leading into the Academy Awards March 2, though TV plays a big role in the Critics Choice Awards as well — even if many of the top contenders on that side of the event, such as “Shogun,” which led the TV awards with four wins, are not eligible for this September’s Emmys having already stormed last year’s Emmys.

“Anora” won Best Picture out of a field of 10 nominees. It was the only Critics Choice Award the Sean Baker film starring Mikey Madison won full stop. The most film wins went to “Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “The Substance” with three each.
