Streetwalkin’ (Roger Corman Cult Classics) – DVD Review
The Film:

G’s up, hoes down.

As Old Dirty said, “…bitch better have my money!” There hasn’t been a lot of evolution in the pimp game, has there? Streetwalkin’ is an interesting Roger Corman-produced effort, mixing his exploitation calling card, with writer/director Joan Freeman’s psychological study of the prostitute lifestyle, the film earns marks for its gripping drama, although really offers nothing new to the trade, that’s centuries old.

Of course, I doubt if anyone remembers this film from 1985, seemingly slipped into the forgotten cracks of time. Luckily, Shout! Factory is re-releasing apparently all of Roger Corman’s films, and while discovering this film, a lucky bit of coincidence had happened. Its star, at the time an unknown actress named Melissa Leo, has just won an Oscar for her riveting work in The Fighter. Now the marketing team has something. In all honesty, Streetwalkin...

Joshua Reviews Joan Freeman’s Streetwalkin’ [DVD Review]
Everyone starts somewhere, right?

While she may now be best known as having the title of Oscar Award Winner tossed before her name at every turn, actress Melissa Leo truly got her start thanks to the same man who gave starts to the careers of people like Francis Ford Coppola and Jonathan Demme. That’s right, Melissa Leo is an alum of the filmmaking school of the iconic Roger Corman.

Shout! Factory, in their continuing run of Corman-related releases, have given the world a brand new DVD release of Leo’s vehicle, the oddly intriguing, if not intensely flawed, Streetwalkin’. The 1985 feature, from director Joan Freeman, marks one of Leo’s first true-blue feature film projects, and while the film as a whole is deeply problematic, it’s also quite interesting.

The film follows Cookie, who we meet as she gives a hurried and emotional phone call to her mother,...

New Release: Melissa Leo in Streetwalkin’ DVD
Years before actress Melissa Leo (HBO’s Treme) picked up an Academy Award for her performance in The Fighter, she starred in the 1985 cult drama-thriller Streetwalkin’, which Shout! Factory will release on DVD on Aug. 2. The film will be priced at $14.93.

2011 Academy Award winner Melissa Leo turns a trick in 1985's Streetwalkin'.

Directed and co-written by Joan Freeman (Satisfaction), Streetwalkin’ features Leo as teen runaway Cookie, who escapes her abusive stepfather and heads for down-and-dirty New York City with her younger brother (Randall Batinkoff, Kick-Ass) in tow. When she arrives in the Big Apple, Cookie meets the charming but violent pimp Duke (Dale Midkiff, Pet Sematary) who quickly introduces her to the harsh, brutal life of prostitution.

A time capsule that does a colorful job in capturing the sights and sounds of the underbelly of 1980s Times Square, Streetwalkin’ also stars Antonio Fargas (Huggy Bear from TV’s Starsky and Hutch...
