4 sci-fi/fantasy shows from the 80s that should be revived
The Lord of the Rings (1978)
The sci-fi/fantasy genre has hit an all-time high with numerous new movies and shows. Epic sagas like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones have proven that viewers want to see more. Which sci-fi/fantasy series from the 1980s are due for a revival?

Jack Lilley, ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Stuntman and Actor, Dies at 91
Image
Jack Lilley, the stunt performer and actor who made a home for himself on Little House on the Prairie by working on every one of the beloved NBC drama’s nine seasons, has died. He was 91.

Lilley had Alzheimer’s disease and died Wednesday at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, his granddaughter Savanah Lilley told The Signal, a news outlet in Santa Clarita.

In Blazing Saddles (1974), Lilley played one of the outlaws who loots the town of Rock Ridge, and in one scene, he and his horse slide into a pool of mud and are submerged. It was an accident, but director Mel Brooks liked it so much, he kept it in the movie.

The mustachioed Lilley had worked with Michael Landon on Bonanza for years starting in 1961, and that led to Landon hiring him for Little House in 1974. (Landon, of course, starred in,...

Fans of John Wayne can now stream the actor's classic Western Rio Lobo, which was originally released in 1970. The film, which drew some ire from famed movie critic Roger Ebert, is now available to stream on Prime Video.

Rio Lobo was directed by Howard Hawks, and the screenplay was penned by Burton Wohl and Leigh Brackett. Wayne had previously collaborated with Hawks on 1959's Rio Bravo and 1966's El Dorado before Rio Lobo, which ultimately turned out to be the director's final film. In the film, Wayne plays a Union leader who vows revenge against the traitors who'd assisted Confederate forces in a deadly attack against his troops during the Civil War. Jorge Rivero, Jennifer O'Neill, Jack Elam, Victor French, and Susana Dosamantes also star.

Valuable Lessons I Learned From Little House on the Prairie
Image
We’re traveling back to the prairie as the charming and cherished series turns 50.

I grew up on Little House on the Prairie with my family and my best friend. It was an important part of my childhood, as we learned invaluable lessons about family love, community, and true friendship.

While the series was a hit in the 1970s and 1980s, not even the cast knew the impact the series would have on audiences 50 years later.

(NBC/Prime Video Screenshot)

We watched the Ingalls family and their friends experience trials and triumphs together for nine seasons and three movies.

The pilot movie and the first season more closely mirrored Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, while Michael Landon added creativity and more characters to the later seasons.

Death of a Gunfighter
Image
Richard Widmark reportedly used his clout to amp up this revisionist western, but the result seems forced at best, and hampered by Universal’s TV-grade production values. The sober screenplay brings in good ideas but the execution can’t quite hold its own with the more progressive westerns of the genre-changing years 1968-’69. A cast of familiar faces makes much of it look fresh: Carroll O’Connor’s venal saloon keeper steals the show, while interesting casting gives us Lena Horne as Widmark’s romantic partner.

Little House on the Prairie Reboot in Development
Melissa Sue Anderson, Melissa Gilbert, Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Richard Bull, Sidney Greenbush, Jonathan Gilbert, Rachel Lindsay Greenbush, and Katherine MacGregor in Little House on the Prairie (1974)
Another day, another reboot announcement.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Little House on the Prairie is getting the update treatment.

A reboot is officially in development on a one-hour drama that would be based on Laura Wilder's beloved novels.

The new series would be co-produced by Paramount TV Studios, Anonymous Content, and Friendly Family Productions.

Details are scarce at this early stage, which is not uncommon for a project this early into development.

The book series was previously adapted into a TV series for NBC and starred Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert.

It was a roaring success and aired from 1974-83, having tremendous staying power.

TV movies followed the end of the original series, while ABC aired a miniseries based on the books in 2005.

The original series centered around the Ingalls Family, who live on a small farm near the village of Walnut Grove, Minn., in the late 1800s.

A reboot of “Little House on the Prairie” is in the works at Paramount TV Studios and Anonymous Content, TheWrap has learned.

The one-hour drama would be based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic “Little House” novels and would be co-produced by Paramount TV Studios, Anonymous Content and Friendly Family Productions. There’s no word yet on the creative team or talent that would be attached to the “Little House on the Prairie” reboot.

The book series was previously adapted into an NBC show starring Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert, which ran for nine seasons between 1974 and 1983.

The original “Little House on the Prairie,” also produced by Friendly Family Productions, centered around the Ingalls Family, who live on a small farm near the village of Walnut Grove, Minn., in the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s. The show primarily focused on Gilbert’s character, Laura, as the “Little House” novels were an autobiographical work by Wilder.

Hollywood screenwriter Guy Thomas died Friday at his home in Ventura County, Calif., of a suspected heart attack, his friend Gerri Malcolm confirmed to Variety. He was 66.

Thomas was best known for his screenplay of “The Magic of Belle Isle,” directed by Rob Reiner and starring Morgan Freeman as a struggling alcoholic writer and Virginia Madsen as his neighbor. His other screenplay credits include 1980’s “Wholly Moses!” and 2001’s “Chasing Destiny.”

Before his death, Thomas was working on an alt-history science fiction Western series, “Billy Stars,” with Oscar-nominated producer David Valdes.

We Had an Amazing Superhero Series in the 80s and We Didn’t Even Know It! Highway To Heaven
When I was growing up, there was a show that I loved to watch called Highway to Heaven. It had been years since I had seen the show, then it recently popped up on Netflix and I immediately started rewatching it.

As I watched the show, I was flooded with nostalgia and the memories of the show started flooding back. The show was filled with hard-hitting drama, humor, inspiration, and even action in some cases. One of the things I loved about the series most was the positive heartfelt messages that each episode revolves around.

Most episodes stressed moral themes and dealt with common human failings, such as egotism, bitterness and greed. Other episodes addressed such topics as racism, bullying, Mental illness, self-esteem, the environment, cancer, and more. There are also some big stars that got their start in the series like Paul Walker, Will Wheaton, and Josh Brolin. It...

Little House On The Prairie Deluxe Remastered Edition Season One Review
Little House on the Prairie is an institution of television that really needs no introduction, but the newly released remastered edition of season one (and the upcoming releases of all the seasons) are worth a serious look.

Some shows from this era and beyond, especially those in fair rotation in syndication, are difficult to push as a truly necessary purchase, but there are a lot of notes to Little House which made the previous releases, and this one especially, true must owns for fans. Of course, that does make for a certain question mark if one already has the previously-released season DVD efforts.

First, while many may get a decent fill of the show through syndication, there are a lot of episodes that simply never get play. There are several episodes that are likely seen as too controversial, or just plain overly harsh to a full family sensibility, to come up in syndicated cycles,...

Highway To Heaven Reboot in Development at A&E; Mark Wahlberg on to Executive Produce
Highway to Heaven is returning to television if executive producer Mark Wahlberg has anything to say about it.  For those of you who didn't have a chance to watch this delightful series during its late 80s run on NBC, it followed Jonathan Smith (Michael Landon), an angel on probation given assignments by God to help troubled humans overcome their difficulties.  Assisting him on Earth was his human companion, Mark Gordon (Victor French), whose cynical personality often clashed with Jonathan's to humorous effect.  A&E's planned reboot will have an edgier take (of course) and will be penned by Hell on Wheels showrunner, John Wirth.  Hit the jump for more. News of the Highway to Heaven series reboot comes courtesy of THR.  While I'm happy to see this particular series making a comeback, the decision to go "edgier" with it makes me a bit concerned.  It was one of the more...

Little House on the Prairie: Actor Merlin Olsen Dies at 69
Football Hall of Fame member and actor Merin Olsen has died. His death was announced by his brother, Orrin, who said that he'd been being treated for mesothelioma.

After a successful time playing college football, Olsen began playing for the Los Angeles Rams in 1962 as part of the National Football League. He was one of the leading defensive players of his era and missed only two games in his 15 years with the NFL. Following his time on the field, Olsen went to work as a commentator for NBC throughout 1980s.

Olsen dabbled in acting while playing football and in 1969 acted opposite John Wayne and Rock Hudson in The Undefeated.

Review: 'Mission: Impossible' Season 6
The concept behind Mission: Impossible had never been attempted on television before and the CBS series about a covert government operation taking on; well, impossible, cases became a smash hit. Guided by the steady Peter Graves, Greg Morris and Peter Lupis, the series received awards, acclaim and most importantly, ratings. Early on, the show was also headlined by Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, but they left after three seasons. In stepped Leonard Nimoy, Lesley Ann Warren, and Sam Elliot for the next two seasons but by spring 1971, the show was beginning to feel tired.

Season six, airing 1971-1972, was the season that should not have been. Paramount Pictures wanted the show canceled and placed into profitable reruns but CBS saw ratings upticks at the end of season five and wanted the series back. Nimoy wanted out, saying he was bored. It was time to change everything up.

The penultimate season,...
