The Fantastic Four: First Steps Faces A Steep Decline At The North American Box Office This Weekend
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps has managed to avoid crashing and burning at the box office in the same way as Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*. However, predictions for the reboot's second weekend in theaters are understandably raising eyebrows.

After opening to $117.6 million last week, the movie is expected to gross $40 million to $45 million over the next couple of days. On the lower side, that's a pretty steep 66% decline, which is better than Captain America: Brave New World (68%) but bigger than Thunderbolts* (56%). The latter somewhat benefited from marketing shifting to *The New Avengers.

These numbers suggest that The Fantastic Four: First Steps had a front-loaded debut, with fans rushing to see Marvel's First Family on the big screen again, but everyone else...not so much.

It's not all doom and gloom, though. The Fantastic Four: First Steps had a decent week in North America and should reach $200 million by Sunday.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps TV Spot Reveals First Official Look At Galactus As More Box Office Updates Hit
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is about to enter its second weekend in theaters, and following an estimated $7.4 million Thursday, the movie is likely to end the weekend with an additional $45 million - $47 million. That's a 61% decline.

It's neither a great result nor a particularly bad one. There's still no word on international numbers, but overseas could be where The Fantastic Four: First Steps makes most of its money. The opposite is true for Superman, as that has grossed $300 million in North America alone.

Taking a bite out of the latest Marvel Studios reboot are The Bad Guys 2 and The Naked Gun. The former made $2.25 million from Thursday previews, while the R-Rated comedy reached $1.6 million.

As of a few days ago, The Fantastic Four: First Steps had grossed roughly $250 million worldwide, so bet on it easily surpassing $300 million by the end of the weekend. The reboot should end its...

Chain Reaction (1996) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Action Movie?
Image
The Chain Reaction episode of What Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

In the summer of 1996, Chain Reaction hit theaters with just about everything you’d want from a ’90s action thriller. Keanu Reeves was still riding high as the sympathetic action hero from Speed. Morgan Freeman brought his A-game and his signature weapon voice. Even director Andrew Davis was a hot commodity, fresh off directing The Fugitive, which had critics cheering and audiences running to theaters like they were being chased by Tommy Lee Jones. Throw in classic ‘90s plot elements like government conspiracy, corrupt suits, and a groundbreaking scientific discovery, and you’ve got popcorn gold. Or at least you should. The script went through many rewrites, which resulted in a frustrated cast. Filming took...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps Cast Recreates One Of The Most Iconic Covers Featuring Marvel's First Family
Image
Marvel Studios rarely recreates specific comic book covers or panels in its movies, and while staged moments like that sometimes run the risk of falling flat, it's proven to be mighty disappointing for many fans.

When it comes to Marvel's First Family, Bryan Hitch's Fantastic Four #554 cover is an iconic piece of imagery that would have made for a great poster. That didn't happen, but The Fantastic Four: First Steps' leads—Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach—have now revealed their take on it.

If only they were in costume, eh?

In other news, Deadline caught up with Paul Walter Hauser and asked the actor about his role as the McU's Mole Man. "I figured Harvey Elder, Mole Man — mad scientist, angry curmudgeon type with this kind of species that he defends — I was like, I can get on board with that," the actor explained.

"Mole...

Marvel "Thrilled" With Response To The Fantastic Four; X-men Unlikely To Feature A-List Talent To Cut Costs
Image
Despite featuring a relatively unknown character, Captain Marvel was released in 2019 and made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. It was a good movie, but just having "Marvel" in its title was likely enough to help it break box office records.

The landscape has since changed, and superhero movies are no longer easily surpassing $1 billion in ticket sales. That's evident from relatively muted openings for Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

According to Variety, Marvel Studios is "thrilled" with the reboot's $218 million opening weekend, and that it's managed to bring Marvel's First Family back to the big screen. The movie has earned positive reviews from fans and critics alike after three 20th Century Fox duds just about killed the franchise.

Showing how much things have changed is The Fantastic Four: First Steps' $4.5 million haul in China this past weekend (Superman made $6.5 million). In 2019, Avengers: Endgame earned $614 million in the Middle Kingdom alone.

Marvel’s Next Moves: ‘Black Panther 3’ and a Young ‘X-Men’ Cast to ‘Keep the Cost Down’; ‘Blade’ and ‘Deadpool 4’ Are Lower Priorities
Image
Could have been worse. Could have been better. That’s the collective takeaway on Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which pulled in $218 million globally following its July 25 bow.

But as with “Superman” two weeks prior, the superhero movie’s overseas haul — $100 million, including an anemic $4.5 million from China — offers a stark reminder of how much things have changed since pre-covid days and where the tripwires lie for the Disney-owned studio, which has ambitious plans for two “Avengers” movies in 2026 and 2027, respectively, followed by an “X-Men” reboot further out on the horizon. By contrast, “Avengers: Endgame” nabbed $614 million from the Middle Kingdom alone in 2019.

“There’s a reset of what a hit is, and I don’t see them consistently hitting $1 billion as before — without China, with Disney+ exposure, post-covid, without megastars,” says one top agent who represents several clients in the Marvel universe. “China used Marvel, Disney and the U.

Avatar: Fire And Ash Trailer Officially Released After Playing In Theaters With The Fantastic Four
Image
The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally been released—via SFFGazette.com—after playing exclusively in theaters before The Fantastic Four: First Steps this past weekend. You may recall that it also leaked online earlier this month, though Disney acted quickly to take it down.

Providing a long-awaited glimpse at Avatar: Fire and Ash's eye-popping visuals, new clans, and stunning new creatures, this sneak peek doesn't reveal too much about the story. Even so, for fans of Pandora, what's shown should be more than enough to convince them to buy a ticket in time for this holiday season.

With Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family.

Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer drops online; James Cameron’s epic saga continues this December
James Cameron
Released in 2009, director James Cameron’s film Avatar became the first movie to officially gross more than $2 billion. Then it took him thirteen years to get a sequel into theatres, so it wasn’t clear if the follow-up was going to be able to replicate that success. But then, sure enough, Avatar: The Way of Water also grossed more than $2 billion, paving the way for not only Avatar 3, or Avatar: Fire and Ash, (which is scheduled to reach theatres on December 19, 2025) but also Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 – which will be released on December 21, 2029 and December 19, 2031, respectively. With the release of the third film now just five months away, a trailer has dropped online and can be seen in the embed above!

Cameron crafted these sequels with a writers room that consisted of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (who worked on The Way of Water and Fire and Ash), Josh Friedman...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps First Concept Art Reveals Designs For Galactus, Silver Surfer, The Thing, More
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is one of Marvel Studios' most visually distinct movies, largely due to it taking place on Earth 828. The parallel reality features a retro-futuristic world inspired by the 1960s and artist Jack Kirby's incredible comic book illustrations.

Talking to Variety, Ryan Meinerding, a character designer, creative director and the head of visual development at Marvel Studios, talked about putting a new spin on the team's iconic costumes.

"With the look of their suits, [costume designer] Alexandra [Byrne] and I were looking through different iterations of the comics," he explained. "The initiative came to lean into the blue and white suits more than the other iterations from the comics."

"It was meant to feel a little bit friendlier and more earnest and not quite so contemporary in its coolness," Meinerding continued. "We landed with something that felt like it was from the past, as if it was designed for a 1960s sci-fi movie.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Promises Its Most Stunning Visuals Yet
Image
James Cameron is diving back into the world of Pandora with Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in the Avatar series. Set to release on December 19, 2025, this movie picks up where The Way of Water left off and looks like it could be the most visually jaw-dropping chapter yet.

Cameron is once again wearing several hats, he’s directing, co-producing, editing, and helped write the story. He worked on the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, along with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. The movie is produced and released by 20th Century Studios.

The returning cast is massive. Sam Worthington is back as Jake Sully, along with Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, and Stephen Lang as the fierce Colonel Quaritch. There are many others returning too, including Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, and Jack Champion. Two new faces join the universe: David Thewlis and Oona Chaplin.

New ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Visuals Tease the Most Breathtaking Chapter Yet
Image
James Cameron is back again with another Avatar film, and this one’s called Avatar: Fire and Ash. It’s the third movie in the Avatar series and a direct follow-up to Avatar: The Way of Water, which came out in 2022.

This new movie is still all about Pandora, the stunning alien world, and once again Cameron is directing, co-writing, co-editing, and producing the film. He worked on the script along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, as well as Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025, after a long journey filled with delays—nine of them to be exact. The movie was supposed to come out way earlier, but it kept getting pushed back because of the crazy amount of work involved, especially with the technology they needed for filming underwater scenes. They were doing things that had never been done before,...

Trailer for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Reveals New Villains, Fiery Conflict, and a Dark Turn for Pandora
Image
The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash is finally out, and it’s bringing some major heat—literally. The third movie in James Cameron’s sci-fi franchise gives us a glimpse at a much darker side of Pandora, and it’s not looking good for Jake Sully and his family.

The trailer was first shown before The Fantastic Four: First Steps in theaters, but now 20th Century Studios has dropped it online.

This is our first official look at Fire and Ash ahead of its December 19, 2025 release date.

In the trailer, we hear Jake (played by Sam Worthington) pleading with Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), saying, “You can’t live like this baby — in hate!” Tension between the Na’vi and the humans hasn’t cooled down at all, and now we’re seeing even more division among the Na’vi clans themselves. This time, it’s the Ash People who step into the spotlight,...

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer Drops — Meet the Ash People and Witness a New Na’Vi War
Image
The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally arrived, and it gives fans a wild look at what’s next in James Cameron’s massive sci-fi world.

‘Avatar: Fire And Ash’ First Trailer Unveils The Ash People And More Na’Vi War
Image
After beginning play over the weekend in front of The Fantastic Four: First Steps screenings, 20th Century Studios’ trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has dropped. It’s the first look at the third installment of the franchise, and comes ahead of its planned December 19, 2025 release.

“You can’t live like this baby – in hate!” exclaims Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) to his wife, Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). As we’ve known coming out of the press tour for Avatar: The Way of Water, not all Na’vi clans are nice, and we have known for a while the Ash People were going to be trouble. And the military humans led by Recom Miles Quaritch aren’t letting up. Also shown here, Sully’s children are in peril again, as expressed by Neytiri, and human friend Spider continues to get in entanglements.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps: First Look At Practical Thing Suit Revealed Along With A Deleted Dating Scene
Image
Much of The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Earth-828 was brought to life with practical effects, and we're sure you'll remember set photos showing a "real" version of The Thing.

The character was brought to life with visual effects (unlike the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four movies), but this stand-in was used on set to give the cast and VFX artists some much-needed reference material. Now, we know who was in the suit, and it wasn't Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Actor and professional wrestler Richard Summers-Calvert has confirmed that he was the practical Ben Grimm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, while sharing new behind-the-scenes photos from the reboot's set.

You can take a closer look at Summers-Calvert as The Thing in the Instagram post below.

The Fantastic Four Now Eyeing $230+M Global Launch; Robert Downey Jr. Shares More Avengers: Doomsday Prep
Image
It won't be until Monday morning that we have a clear idea of exactly how high The Fantastic Four: First Steps has soared during its opening weekend. Still, the latest round of estimates is in, and things look simply fantastic for Marvel's First Family.

According to Deadline, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now eyeing a global launch of $220 million - $230 million after grossing $106.2 million worldwide through Friday.

The Matt Shakman-helmed reboot earned $57 million on Friday, taking its expected domestic opening weekend to $120 million - $125 million (some analysts believe it could go as high as $130 million if there's strong walk-up business today).

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is also exceeding expectations overseas, where it's now looking at a $105 million start. Like with Superman, the weeks ahead will be crucial for this one, though it's fortunate to have little in the way of noteworthy competition this August.

Will Marvel Studios'...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps: A First Look At Ralph Ineson's Practical Galactus Costume Has Been Revealed
Image
Much has been said about the practical costume worn by Galactus actor Ralph Ineson on the set of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and we now have a first look at it.

The Nosferatu star took to Instagram earlier today to share some photos from his time on set, a lonely experience for the actor, seeing as he shot his scenes without the rest of the reboot's cast.

This costume is an amazing practical creation, and pretty much identical to what we saw in the movie itself. Fans have unanimously praised the McU's take on the Devourer of Worlds, and the hope is that he'll somehow return in a future movie.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week, Ineson said, "There’s a lot to explore in the lore, and he is a big character in the whole universe. But I would be one of the last people to...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps' CinemaScore Has Been Revealed (And It Sets A Record)
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps has touched down in theaters, and with people now getting to watch the latest Marvel Studios blockbuster, we have a CinemaScore (perhaps the best indication of how good word-of-mouth is with filmgoers).

As a reminder, CinemaScore is a market research firm that surveys audience reactions to newly released movies.

After attending opening night screenings, moviegoers rate films on an A+ to F scale, providing insights into audience satisfaction. Widely used in the film industry, CinemaScore helps gauge the initial reception of movies and influences box office predictions based on audience feedback.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been awarded an A-, meaning it joins MCU movies like Captain America: The First Avenger, Black Widow, and Thunderbolts*. It also ties with The Batman and another huge superhero movie released earlier this month, Superman.

“The Fantastic Four: Baby Steals The Show In This Dishy Redux” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Agility and fragility are effortlessly married in this, the most lucid and coherent super-hero film since Man invented Marvel & DC.

Let’s cut to the chase. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a treat, a sumptuous treat. It is one helluva good-looking film with charismatic actors pitching in like there is no tomorrow. Which happens to be the literal truth, if we consider that the world is under attack by a space-god named Galactus.

Yeah, yeah, I know. In how many ways is this world going to be saved by the superheroes, right? Give us, and them, a break, will you…

But hold on! This is not the usual Superheroes versus Super-villain saga clogged to the brim with show-offy special effects. There is more here… more emotional velocity, more compelling drama. Most of all, there is a cute baby involved this time, and he must be saved before the world.

Matthew Wood, Pedro Pascal, Ralph Ineson, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Julia Garner, Vanessa Kirby, and Joseph Quinn in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)
What Did You Think of The Fantastic Four: First Steps?
Matthew Wood, Pedro Pascal, Ralph Ineson, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Julia Garner, Vanessa Kirby, and Joseph Quinn in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)
Marvel Studios may not have a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con this year, but they do have a movie that has made its way out into theatres just in time for Comic-Con weekend: The Fantastic Four: First Steps! We’ve seen the early reactions and we know what JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray thought of the movie (you can read his 8/10 review Here) – and now we want to know, what did you think of The Fantastic Four: First Steps?

There have been several attempts to bring the Fantastic Four to the screen over the years, to varying levels of success. Roger Corman produced a low budget adaptation of the comic book back in 1994, but it was never officially released. Tim Story directed two big budget Fantastic Four movies that were released by 20th Century Fox, Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). In 2015, Fox gave the...

Fantastic Four: First Steps Is One Of Marvel's Best Movies In Ages (Until It's Not)
Image
It's spoilerin' time! This article discusses major plot details from "The Fantastic Four: First Steps."

From Marvel Comics' First Family to the savior of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, the trajectory of the Fantastic Four might as well have been written in the stars. To many, including /Film's own Witney Seibold in his review of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," that's exactly what director Matt Shakman delivered at a time when the franchise needed it most. Moviegoers disappointed by a string of high-profile swings and misses ("Thunderbolts*" innocent) couldn't have asked for much more than an ensemble of perfectly-cast stars, a retro tone infused with style and hope, and a crowd-pleasing adventure ripped right out of the pages of the source material. The ready-made narrative of this "fantastic" blockbuster giving the MCU a much-needed shot in the arm and a new lease on life is almost too obvious to dismiss.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps Looks Set To Beat Superman With Best Thursday Preview Box Office Of 2025
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now playing in theaters, and according to Deadline, early estimates point to a $23 million haul at the North American box office following previews that began at 2pm on Thursday.

We'll have official numbers later today, but this $23 million estimate suggests the Marvel Studios reboot will easily beat those conservative $100 million - $110 million opening weekend predictions.

$23 million would also top Superman's $22.5 million debut ($2.8 million of which came from early Amazon Prime screenings), giving The Fantastic Four: First Steps the biggest Thursday of 2025 so far.

Proving that superhero fatigue only applies to movies that ultimately aren't a big enough draw to non-fans, the Matt Shakman-helmed reboot looks to get off to a considerably bigger start than Thunderbolts* ($11.5 million Thursday) and Captain America: Brave New World ($12 million Thursday).

The Fantastic Four: First Steps marks the 12th time an MCU movie has made more than $20 million from preview screenings.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Audience Score Has Been Revealed By Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter
Image
Critics had their say on The Fantastic Four: First Steps earlier this week, and following an early international release and Thursday previews, fans and moviegoers are finally weighing in on the Marvel Studios reboot.

With over 2500 verified ratings on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has an excellent 93% score. That's higher than Superman (92%), the same as Thunderbolts* (93%), and quite a bit above Captain America: Brave New World (76%).

The movie's Tomatometer score currently sits at 88% based on 235 reviews. While Thunderbolts* received a similar level of acclaim, it also failed to crack $400 million at the worldwide box office.

Fortunately, there appears to be far more interest in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Marvel Studios has successfully marketed it as an event movie, and as a largely standalone tale set on a separate Earth, it's likely to be a far more welcoming prospect than a feature led by streaming characters (Marvel...

"#DoomsdayIsComing": Russos Tease The Fantastic Four As Robert Downey Jr. Reveals Doctor Doom Comic Research
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now playing in theaters, and the Russo Brothers have taken to Instagram to hype up Marvel Studios' "awesome" new movie.

Joe and Anthony also made sure to warn fans to "stay in your seats for the credits" because "#DoomsdayIsComing." The implication is that there's something in the post-credits scene setting the stage for next December's Avengers: Doomsday.

If you'd rather not wait to find out what happens, you can read a full breakdown of both stingers here.

It's shaping up to be a big weekend for Marvel's First Family, and we'll be sharing updates on the reboot's Audience Score and Thursday preview box office numbers very soon.

In our review of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, we concluded, "The Fantastic Four is an exceptional introduction to the MCU’s First Family, and thanks to a Jack Kirby-infused feel that’s unlike anything we’ve seen before,...

Film Review: Marvel-ous Start for ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’
Image
Chicago – “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is a step in the right direction for Marvel Studios and easily the best Fantastic Four movie ever made. But when you look at the movies that came before it, that’s not as big an achievement as it sounds. This Fantastic Four is essentially a superhero hangout movie where the essentials of the plot hold the least weight of any superhero movie in modern memory.

We’re introduced to the Fantastic Four in a ’60’s style TV special celebrating four years of protecting the earth after a cosmic storm gave them superpowers on a trip into space. Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) is a scientist who can stretch his limbs like rubber bands, His wife Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) has powers of invisibility … and is expecting the couple’s first child. Sue’s brother Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) can light himself on fire and fly,...

Galactus' Voice In The Fantastic Four: First Steps Has Finally Been Revealed (And He Sounds Perfect)
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now playing in many theaters across the world, and while the best way to watch this movie is on the biggest screen possible, clips of Galactus are getting a lot of love on social media this morning.

While we won't be posting any leaked content here, if you're eager to hear what the McU's Galactus sound like, it won't take you long to track one of the many clips down.

It's fair to say that Ralph Ineson is perfectly cast as the Devourer of Worlds, and while it appears a few tweaks have been made to his natural voice, his performance still shines through. The actor is speaking at a slightly lower register than normal, making Galactus sound suitably ancient.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ineson was asked about playing a supervillain the same summer his Nosferatu co-star Nicholas Hoult stars as Lex Luthor in Superman.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Rotten Tomatoes Score Is On The Rise Ahead Of Thursday Previews
Image
The review embargo for The Fantastic Four: First Steps lifted on Tuesday, and while the first wave of reviews was very positive, the reboot's Rotten Tomatoes score has been hovering around the mid-80s for the past couple of days.

The movie finally arrives in U.S. theaters later this afternoon, and that percentage score is now on the rise! With 174 reviews counted as we write this, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has an average rating of 89%. It debuted with 88% (the same score as Thunderbolts*), but this is the highest point it's reached on the review aggregator so far.

Can it possibly crack the 90s? That remains to be seen in the coming days, but either way, it ranks among Marvel Studios' best-reviewed movies.

Vanessa Kirby has received the lion's share of praise for her take on Sue Storm. "Vanessa is able to convey Sue's power and humanity so brilliantly,...

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Outscores ‘Thunderbolts*’ to Become This Year’s Top-Rated Comic Book Movie
Image
The new movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps has already hit theaters in some countries, and the early reviews are very positive.

Right now, it holds an 89% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 174 reviews. The critics agree that the film benefits from a strong cast and a cool 1960s style, saying it “does Marvel’s First Family justice.”

Via Rotten Tomatoes

This score puts Fantastic Four: First Steps just ahead of Thunderbolts*, which currently has an 88% approval rating. Among other comic book movies this year, Superman comes in third with 84%, while Captain America: Brave New World is much lower at 46%.

Via Rotten Tomatoes

Even though Thunderbolts* got good reviews, it didn’t perform well at the box office. By mid-July 2025, it had made around $382 million worldwide, which is low for a Marvel movie. According to reports, the film needed to earn $425 million globally just to break even.

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” Review: Marvel’s First Family Finally Gets the Film it Deserves
Image
The MCU is amid a full-blown metamorphosis. After years of expansion and ambitious interconnections, the franchise is entering a new phase of redefinition. With Kang (Jonathan Majors) removed from the throne of villainy for both off-screen and creative reasons, the mantle of “big bad” for the Multiverse Saga has officially passed to Doctor Doom – who will shockingly be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. The narrative reset confirmed by Kevin Feige in the upcoming Avengers films begins here, with The Fantastic Four: First Steps acting as the launchpad for these characters’ official entry into the MCU timeline. At the same time, it marks a sort of historic restart: after decades of problematic adaptations – and no matter how loudly 2000s nostalgia screams – Marvel’s First Family has never truly received the justice it deserves. Until now…

Directed by Matt Shakman and written by a team of eight hands – Josh Friedman (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Rotten Tomatoes Score Finally Breaks Unfortunate Streak For The First Family
Image
With 130 reviews now counted, The Fantastic Four: First Steps sits at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Marvel Studios movie has been Certified Fresh by the review aggregator, marking another win for the MCU at a time when the superhero genre needs one.

Thunderbolts* was a critical hit, but struggled at the box office (it tapped out at $382 million). Captain America: Brave New World, however, received largely negative reviews and barely passed $400 million worldwide.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps has quickly become one of Marvel Studios' best-reviewed movies, marking a phenomenal start for the McU's First Family that breaks an unfortunate streak for the Fantastic Four franchise.

Every single Fantastic Four movie until now has been rated "Rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes; First Steps is the only one produced by Marvel Studios, and the first to not only be deemed Fresh, but Certified Fresh.

In 2005, Tim Story's Fantastic Four movie, starring Ioan Gruffudd,...

A First Look At [Spoiler] From The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Post-Credits Scene Has Leaked Online
Image
The Fantastic Four: First Steps has opened in France, Indonesia, Italy, and the Netherlands today, meaning spoilers are already starting to find their way online.

That's inevitable with a staggered international release, but one of the reboot's worst-kept secrets has already surfaced this morning. Several photos from The Fantastic Four: First Steps' mid-credits scene are circulating on social media, revealing a first look at Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom.

We won't be posting them here, but they're not exactly hard to find. We'd also argue that this scene works best when seen on the biggest screen possible (it elicited gasps and applause at our screening).

Regardless, you'll find an in-depth breakdown of the movie's post-credits scenes here later today.

Filmmaker Matt Shakman has already confirmed that this sequence was shot by the Russo Brothers on the set of Avengers: Doomsday, and it shows Doom talking to the young Franklin Richards,...

"I Was So Appalled": The Fantastic Four Star Pedro Pascal Blames Wonder Woman 1984 For Not Going Clean Shaven
Image
The comic book version of Reed Richards has frequently sported facial hair, so Pedro Pascal having a moustache and beard in The Fantastic Four: First Steps isn't that big a deal.

Some fans have complained about The Last of Us star not going clean-shaven, but if you need to blame someone for that, you can lay it at the feet of whoever convinced Pascal to shave for 2020's Wonder Woman 1984.

Talking to Vanessa Kirby for LADbible's "Agree to Disagree" video series, Pascal explained, "I grow such shit facial hair, but if I were to shave it all off, I really look very [awful]. Strongly disagree with a clean-shaven me."

"I was so appalled by the way I look in 'Wonder Woman 1984.' I loved the movie, but I was so appalled by the way that I looked that I never have gone back unless it were completely necessary,...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps Eyes Impressive $210M Global Box Office Launch Following Glowing Reviews
Image
The first reviews for The Fantastic Four: First Steps have been, for lack of a better word, fantastic. Now, Deadline has shared some updated tracking data a couple of days before the Marvel Studios reboot arrives in theaters.

According to the trade, it's currently eyeing a $190 million - $210 million global launch, not a bad start for a team of superheroes best known for starring in bad movies.

$90 million - $100 million is the expected international haul, with a conservative $100 million - $110 million North American debut expected. Why conservative? Well, it was only a couple of days ago that we were hearing $130 million - $140 million. We'll see what happens this weekend.

Superman opened to $220 million at the worldwide box office, so it's proving to be a good summer for Marvel and DC as both studios look to shrug off so-called "superhero fatigue."

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’: Critics praise ‘charismatic leads’ and ‘a fresh start’ for the MCU
Image
The critics have spoken and agree that The Fantastic Four: First Steps lives up to the heroic team's name, with initial reviews on Tuesday celebrating the film for its character-driven storytelling and strong performances.

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter praises Marvel for shifting its focus toward character development. “There’s a fresh willingness to prioritize character over the usual barrage of interchangeable CG action sequences that often overwhelm them, instead giving us relatable folks to invest in,” Rooney writes, highlighting the film’s commitment to emotional depth amid the spectacle.

Directed by Matt Shakman, the film is set in the early 1960s and stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Reed’s wife Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Sue’s brother Johnny, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. Julia Garner appears as the mysterious Silver Surfer known. Rooney notes, “The actors are so terrific and their chemistry...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Rotten Tomatoes Score Has Been Revealed
Image
The reviews are in for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and that means we have an all-important Rotten Tomatoes score. Love or hate it, the review aggregator plays a crucial role in helping many moviegoers decide whether a new release is worth buying a ticket for.

As we write this, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has 88% based on 88 reviews. That number will fluctuate in the coming days as more verdicts are counted (we'd expect at least 300+), but like Superman, we wouldn't expect the number to change too much.

The movie is also "Certified Fresh," another win for Marvel Studios at a time when one is needed.

The only place for The Fantastic Four: First Steps to go was up after the team's previous movies. 2015's Fantastic Four, directed by Josh Trank and starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Michael B. Jordan, is one of the worst-reviewed superhero movies ever,...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps First Reviews Are In: Marvel Studios Finally Does Right By Its First Family
Image
The first social media reactions for The Fantastic Four: First Steps were glowing, though we know better than to put too much stock in those. After all, it's almost become a cliché for full reviews not to match what's initially said on X, but is that the case for Marvel Studios' latest movie?

The early buzz surrounding Matt Shakman's reboot was overwhelmingly positive, not dissimilar to Superman earlier this month.

Now that the review embargo has fully lifted, we see that those social posts were once again largely accurate, with critics hailing filmmaker Matt Shakman's reboot as a much-needed breath of fresh air for the MCU and a win for its First Family.

There are some complaints, though most seem to be the typical moans and groans we see whenever a new superhero movie is released.

As always, we'll start with the trades. Deadline's review is positive, arguing that,...

What The Critics Are Saying About ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe begins a new chapter this week with a reboot of one of the company’s most beloved properties, The Fantastic Four.

Starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Fantastic Four: First Steps was directed by Matt Shakman (Wandavision) and comes from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer.

First Steps marks the fourth attempt to translate the original comic book characters of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing to the silver screen. This time, the action will take place in an alternate history/parallel universe set in the ’60s.

Deadline’s Damon Wise described the film as a “satisfying and stylish Marvel adventure.”

“It also benefits from a smart script and — I can’t believe I’m writing this — really quite moving performances from its four charismatic leads,...

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Review
Image
Stars: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Ralph Ineson, Julia Garner, Natasha Lyonne | Written by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, Ian Springer | Directed by Matt Shakman

Often referred to as Marvel’s First Family, the Fantastic Four finally make their MCU debut (sort of) with this new adventure, the third iteration of the characters, following their previous appearances in the 2005 and 2015 movies. Directed by Matt Shakman – who clearly impressed Marvel honchos with the TV series WandaVision – the new film is superbly cast, beautifully designed and takes big comic book swings with its story choices.

The film begins on Earth 828 (a nice detail at the end explains the number), an alternate universe that is handily styled like the 1960s, allowing Shakman to lovingly recreate the look of the classic original comics. Like the recent Superman movie, the script chooses to dispense with the Fantastic Four’s origin story,...

The Fantastic Four: The First Steps' Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Out of This World
Image
Marvel has had several attempts at adapting the First Family. Now, the MCU tried again with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which marks the third adaptation in two decades.

The MCU has struggled with its titles in Phase Five, which came after the blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Even in 2025, Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* struggled to maintain the same quality. Kicking off Phase Six, The Fantastic Four: First Steps debuted with a stellar 88% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its Jul. 25 release.

The debut score comes after The Fantastic Four: First Steps' blue carpet in Los Angeles, California, and it comes from 50 reviews from critics. The rating might fluctuate as more opinions come in, but it's still a great feat. Since the film won't be in theaters until Friday, there is no audience score available yet.

The new superhero film stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/ Mister Fantastic,...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps Review
Matt Shakman
The Fantastic Four: First Steps marks a triumphant return for some of Marvel’s most loved characters, offering both a fresh take and a deeply faithful adaptation of the beloved Lee and Kirby characters. Directed by Matt Shakman, the film marks the beginning of Phase Six in the MCU, and sets itself apart with a striking retro-futuristic aesthetic inspired by the 1960s—a decision that both honours the era of the original comics and gives the film a distinctive visual identity.

The story centres around the group’s impactful history as emerging global icons. Just as they begin to find their footing, they are called upon to confront an existential threat: the arrival of Galactus, a planet-devouring cosmic entity, and his mysterious sidekick, the Silver Surfer. As the team grapples with the overwhelming stakes of saving their world, an intimate subplot unfolds around Reed Richards and Sue Storm, who are expecting their first child.
