Why ‘Severance’ DoP Jessica Lee Gagné Chose Season 2 for the Big Leap to Directing
Image
It’s all in the eyes, as they say, and Apple TV+’s “Severance” provides these windows to the soul at an almost uncomfortably close range. You can’t help but latch onto the emotional complications of the show’s “innie” (work self) and “outie” (life self) characters within its altered parallel universes of Lumon Industries—and those eyes are often key to deciphering the intentions of both.

One of the standout Season 2 episodes, the moving seventh installment titled “Chikhai Bardo” (a Tibetan Buddhist phrase relating to the moment of death), recalls Gemma (Dichen Lachman) and her court- ship and marriage to Mark (Adam Scott). Personal tragedy unravels them before they are unknowingly united again in Lumon land, despite Mark’s outie thinking that Gemma died ages ago.

“In Season 2, we go through a lot more stuff through eyes, through vision,” said Jessica Lee Gagné, who has been the series...

How ‘Severance’ Dp Jessica Lee Gagné Turned the Series’ Most Ambitious Episode Into Her Directorial Debut
Image
[This story contains spoilers for Severance season two.]

Severance cinematographer-turned-director Jessica Lee Gagné was ready to bid adieu to the hit Apple TV+ series prior to its second season.

Of course, she cherished her time on 2022’s newest — and one of only a few remaining — water-cooler shows, especially her yearslong collaboration with in-house director/EP Ben Stiller. (As director and Dp, the pair previously collaborated together on Escape at Dannemora.) The Quebec native had shot Lumon Industries’ Severed Floor and its signature white hallways in so many different ways that she was simply ready to create a new visual vocabulary somewhere else. She even rejected an offer to make her directorial debut during season two, but then everything changed as soon as she read a summary of the series’ most ambitious episode, “Chikhai Bardo.”

“[Directing] is often proposed to cinematographers so they come back for another season. So I said no at first, but then I...

It’s been almost a month, so, yeah — this interview mentions all kinds of spoilers from the Severance Season 2 finale, streaming on Apple TV+.

When Dichen Lachman paid a visit to TVLine’s New York office, 1) it was almost 16 years to the day that I published my first interview with her, and 2) the pop culture-verse was abuzz with theories about the Severance Season 2 finale, which dropped March 21.

'Insufferable': Adam Scott Weighs in on His Least Favorite Severance Co-Star
Image
This article contains spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 10, "Cold Harbor."

The opening act of the SeveranceSeason 2 finale featured a pivotal scene during which Mark Scout (Adam Scott) was able to converse with his Innie via recorded messages. The actor recently opened up about what it was like filming a scene with himself, who just happens to be his least-favorite co-star.

"I don't know," said Scott about how the scene came together during Apple TV+’s FYC event, via TV Insider. "But I have to say it was by far the most insufferable actor I’ve ever worked with. Just a pain in the a**. And I now know what my fellow castmates have been putting up with for so long." Scott added that the scene was a bit of a challenge, but credited the Severance team for helping to accomplish it.

"Yeah, that was again challenging, but really fun," Scott explained.

(One of the) showrunners on One Piece leaves the show
Image
One Piece, Netflix's live-action adaptation of the phenomenally successful manga by Eiichiro Oda, beat the odds back in 2023 to become the rare manga-to-live-action TV show that didn't absolutely embarrass itself; Netflix especially has an iffy track record with that kind of thing. Now that the second season has finished filming, co-showrunner Matt Owens has announced that he is leaving the series, at least for now.

“The last 6 years working on the live action One Piece have been a life changing journey," Owens wrote on his Instagram. "A dream come true. It’s also been A Lot. So I’m stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health.”

You can probably tell from context, by the Going Merry is the pirate ship on which Monkey D. Luffy and his crew sail the seas, in search of the famed One Piece treasure.

Severance renewed for season 3 (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)

Apple TV+ is rewarding Severance fans with another season of the critically acclaimed sci-fi workplace drama. The streamer renewed the award-winning series for a third season, and Severance creator Dan Erickson claims it won’t take another three years to arrive.

“We’re hoping that there are no massive strikes or pandemics or fissures opening up in the crest of the Earth that end up delaying us. Barring that, I’d certainly hope that we’d get this one out a bit sooner,” said Erickson in an interview with Variety. “But, Severance has always been a show that takes a long time to make, and we’re proud of what we came up with, even though it took quite a long time.”

The series premiered on February 18, 2022, with season two debuting on January 17, 2025. The game-changing season two finale aired on March 20, 2025.

‘Severance’ Star Adam Scott Was Surprised Fans Were Thirsting Over Him: ‘All I Did Was Get a Haircut’ | Video
Image
All the “Severance” thirst over Adam Scott is surprising to one person: Adam Scott. Ahead of the finale of the Apple TV+ drama, the actor behind Mark S. stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to talk about the final episode, judge fan art and debunk wild fan theories.

Specifically, Kimmel asked Scott about the fan response to Season 2, Episode 7 “Chikhai Bardo,” which shows Mark S. (Scott) before he was severed. The episode, written by Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman and directed by Jessica Lee Gagné, has inspired several fan edits of Scott and posts about how attractive he is.

“Literally, all I did was get a haircut. It goes to show just how terrible my haircut is as Mark S., I guess,” Scott told Kimmel on Thursday night.

Scott then revealed that he does not use a wig in “Severance” and that Mark S.’s stuffy, professional hair style is “all Ben Stiller.

‘Severance’ Renewed for Season 3 at Apple TV+
Image
Praise Kier! “Severance” will return for Season 3 at Apple TV+.

It’s not surprising that the streamer would be interested in more episodes of the drama from Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller. “Severance” first premiered in February 2022. It quickly became a breakout hit for Apple, garnering widespread critical acclaim as well as 14 nominations during the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards and Creative Arts Emmy Awards. That first season ultimately took home two wins for Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Music Composition for a Series in the Original Dramatic Score subcategory.

Season 2 has been similarly praised by critics as both installments currently have 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. During its premiere week, “Severance” Season 2 secured 598 million viewing minutes, according to Nielsen measurements. That week the series ranked No. 4 on the audience measurement company’s weekly list of the top streamed original content, a rarity for Apple TV+.

Waffle parties for everyone: Severance will return for a third season at Apple TV+.

The streamer announced the renewal just a few hours after the second-season finale of Severance debuted late Thursday. The series is Apple TV+’s most watched drama to date.

“The idea of getting to make more Severance with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world’s finger traps combined,” series creator, writer and executive producer Dan Erickson said in a statement. “I can’t wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread and malice with these truly incredible people.”

Added executive producer and director Ben Stiller, referring to the show’s central conceit of people with divided work and non-work personae, “Making Severance has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of. While I have no memory of this, I’m...

‘Severance’ Renewed for Season 3 at Apple TV+
Image
Praise Kier! “Severance” has been renewed for Season 3.

The news comes the day after the Season 2 finale of the Apple TV+ workplace thriller.

What started as a niche sci-fi mystery with a cult following became Apple TV+’s most-watched series ever during its second season run, according to the streamer.

In the series, created by Dan Erickson and directed and executive produced by Ben Stiller, Adam Scott stars as Mark Scout, a man who undergoes a procedure that separates his work life and personal life. As Mark’s “outie” grieves the loss of his wife, his “innie” lives an entirely different existence behind the walls of the shady biotech company Lumon. Of course, Lumon and its experimental severance procedure aren’t exactly what they are advertised to be.

In Season 1, Mark and his co-workers Helly (Britt Lower), Dylan (Zach Cherry) and Irving (John Turturro) launch a rebellion against the company...

‘Severance’ Dp Jessica Lee Gagné Had No Intention of Directing — Then She Read Episode 7
Image
Mark (Adam Scott) and Gemma (Dichen Lachman) aren’t the only people who go on a journey in Episode 7 of “Severance” Season 2. For “Chikhai Bardo” and all the impressionistic ways it dramatizes the tethers of love and grief that bind together these two Outies, the producers turned to cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné for assistance in figuring out how the transitional moments between scenes would work visually. That collaboration, in turn, empowered Gagné to do something she did not think she would do on “Severance” or any other TV show: Direct an episode.

IndieWire reached out to Gagné about stepping into the director’s chair and maintaining the show’s sense of self through all the Severed iterations of Gemma we see. A big challenge was making the visions of her and Mark’s relationship in a time long past, one that feels as simultaneously familiar and impossible as memory, less...

Severance Season 2 Episode 7 Resolves A Minor Detail You Totally Forgot About
Image
In Keir we trust. This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Severance."

A show as wide-ranging and complex as "Severance" leaves several plates spinning in the air during any given episode -- some of which get resolved relatively soon, and others that take a bit longer to resolve themselves. Although certain goat-related mysteries leftover from season 1 continue to reverberate through the second, there's a significantly more minor (though no less mystifying) one that eagle-eyed fans have been waiting to shed some light on for almost three whole years now.

Remember when our Macrodata Refinement Team moseyed on over to their rival department Optics & Design during the debut season and, in episode 6 (titled, evocatively enough, "The Grim Barbarity Of Optics and Design"), finally realized the O&d team was far larger than they ever assumed? In a subtle act, the ever-suspicious Dylan G. (Zach Cherry) poked around the department and...

Severance Season 2 Episode 7 Goes Full Lost With The Show's Best Episode Yet
Image
Your outie is kind and doesn't divulge any of the major spoilers from the following article for the latest episode of "Severance."

"Severance" has always flirted heavily with the notion of becoming the heir apparent to the throne left behind by "Lost" -- a similar mystery-box experience about a group of characters thrown into strange circumstances and that seems to uncover more questions than answers with every passing season. Season 2 has somehow raised the bar of quality even higher than it already was the first time around, diving deeper into the complex world-building details of this workplace satire and making us fully invested in our quartet of heroes as we learn more about their inner lives. But episode 7, titled "Chikhai Bardo," might ultimately go down as the moment when the creative team took the torch from "Lost" showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse and made it official.

This very welcome...

‘Severance’ Finally Reveals What Happened to Mark’s Wife
Image
There are a few overarching mysteries in the mind-bending sci-fi psychological thriller series Severance. The biggest one, of course, is what Lumon Industries’ ultimate goal is with the severance program and employees like Mark (Adam Scott). The second is what happened to Mark’s wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman) who, it was confirmed at the end of Season 1 when a picture of her was revealed, is actually alive. Mark’s innie knew her as Ms. Casey, the wellness counselor for the severed floor.

Since Season 2 has resumed, the mystery has deepened as Mark’s innie now knows who Ms. Casey really is in relation to his outie and eventually, Mark’s outie learns that she is still alive, too. Not surprisingly, he will stop at nothing to reunite with his wife. But where is she and what happened? Episode 7, one of the most visually stunning and beautifully presented of the series,...

'Severance' Season 2 Is Brutally Skewering This Phony Corporate Practice
Image
Apple TV+'s hit dystopian sci-fi/nightmare/workplace sitcom Severance is many things, but possibly most of all, it's a satire of working life in the modern era. Since the very first episode, creator Dan Erickson and executive producer Ben Stiller have used their fictitious setting, Lumon Industries, to take real-world practices to an absurd extreme.

Season 1 found the innies working to earn meaningless performance perks like finger traps and waffle parties, a funhouse mirror reflection of the ways that companies attempt to keep their workers productive without having to offer better pay or benefits. Season 2 already looks like it's going to build on the series' satirical foundation by introducing another element to the mix: taking aim at phony corporate accountability that promises positive reform but delivers nothing of substance.

'A Different Kind of Part': Christopher Walken Reveals Why He Agreed to Star in Severance
Image
Christopher Walken stars as Burt Goodman in the Apple TV+ original series Severance, which recently returned for its long-awaited second season. Walken's character quickly became a fan-favorite in season one, due in large part to his relationship with Irving, portrayed by John Turturro. In a recent interview, Walken explained why he agreed to star in the show in the first place, explaining that his decades-long friendship with Turturro played a major part in his decision.

In the Apple TV+ series, Severance, Walken portrays Burt Goodman, the head of the O&d Department who forms a romantic connection with Macrodata Refinement's Irving (Turturro). His character's connection to Irving becomes a pivotal moment in the lead-up to the explosive season one finale, and his innie's "retirement" serves as arguably the most heart-wrenching moment of the series. In a recent interview with TV Insider, Walken would explain that initially, he was intrigued by...

We see the panic that erupts throughout Lumon as a result. “Goodbye, Mrs. Selvig” is directed by Sam Donovan.

Severance Season 2’s Budget Ballooned So Big During Filming Chaos, It’ll Reportedly Wipe Out Almost All Of The Studio’s Profit
Image
The budget for Severance season 2 increased to the point that it reportedly wiped out all of the production studio's profit. Severance season 2 has returned to Apple TV+, three years after the first installment premiered. Although some of that extended gap between episodes comes down to strike-related delays, the production process was also slowed down by disagreements between the showrunners and changing ideas about what the second installment would look like.

Due to reported animosity between showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman, not to mention scrapped scripts and aborted storylines, the cost of Severance season 2 rose to $20 million per episode. New details underline where some of that cost went. It also explains what the price tag means for Fifth Season, formerly known as Endeavor Content, which produces the sci-fi thriller.

Severance Season 2, Episode 1 Review: I'm Blown Away By Just How Good Adam Scott Is In Apple TV+'s Game-Changing Season 2 Premiere
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Severance season 2, episode 1Severance season 2 is everything I expected it would be and more. Before getting into the episode, it's important to note that season 1 was released back in 2022. Due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, work on the show was delayed, and we're only now getting season 2. I've had an issue with this era of streaming shows where projects debut to massive success and then disappear for a couple of years or more before returning. This can lead to interest waning, especially for shows just starting. Luckily, Severance allows us to adjust to its in-universe changes.

Severance is a psychological thriller series featuring Adam Scott as Mark Scout, an employee at Lumon Industries who undergoes a "severance" procedure to separate his work and personal memories. However, as work and life personas mysteriously begin to collide, it quickly becomes clear that not all is as it seems.

The 'Severance' Season 2 Delay Was More Important Than Anyone Realized
Image
Quick Links How the 'Severance' Production Delay Hurt Fans So Streaming Contributed to the 'Severance' Season 2 Postponement?

A lot can happen in three years, a truth that perhaps no group of people is better able to quantify than Severance fans. The Apple TV+ series faced numerous delays after its Season 1 release in February 2022, such as a 148-day WGA Strike and reported tensions between co-showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman behind the scenes. Production delays are all too common nowadays, such as with Netflix's Stranger Things or Max's The Last of Us. And, with eight-episode seasons being the new normal, many fans may feel it just isn't worth it to continue staying tuned.

But it's not just a matter of staying relevant — locations changing and child actors aging can lead to continuity issues. Season 1 of Severance may have been a masterclass in pacing with the way...

The pop-up featured a real-life cubicle from the iconic office space of Apple’s show, which returns with season two on Friday.

During the initial pop-up on Tuesday, the actors entered the cubicle, cleaned the office’s carpets, chatted with each other and worked at the desk computers. Stiller posted several images from the scene to his social media, writing, “Grand Central right now.” Per Apple, several of the set pieces and wardrobe were original pieces from the show’s filming.

Couild 'Madame Web' Star Adam Comic Book Return to the Super Hero Genre?
Image
Even with 2024's worst superhero movie under his belt, and the leading role in one of the best original sci-fi shows to-date, Adam Scott isn't ruling out a return to the superhero genre. Scott is set to return to our screens in the second season of Apple TV+'s phenomenal Severance, created by Dan Erikson and directed by Ben Stiller. Season 2 is set to premiere on the streamer on January 17, and the show should put the actor back in the good books after his supporting role in 2024's Madame Web, as a younger Uncle Ben Parker (before he became an uncle).

During an interview with ComicBook to promote the second season of Severance, Adam Scott addressed whether there could be a potential return to the world of comic book movies. "I don’t know. Never say never," the actor teased.

In addition to Severance, Scott is also best known for...

‘Severance’ Season 2 Premiere Canceled Amid Devastating L.A. Wildfires
Image
As Los Angeles is coming to grips with the unprecedented destruction from this week’s wildfires, Apple TV+ and the Severance producing team have decided to cancel the Jan. 13 red carpet premiere for the upcoming second season of the acclaimed drama series, which was to be held in L.A.

“As devastating wildfires continue to impact the Los Angeles area, and with safety as our first and foremost priority, we have made the decision to cancel Monday’s Severance season two premiere event,” Apple TV+ said in a statement. “Apple is donating to support the relief efforts on the ground and our thoughts and heartfelt support remain with everyone who has been affected by these tragic fires. Thank you for your understanding.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook yesterday announced that the California-based company “will be donating to support the victims and recovery efforts on the ground.”

Severance Season 2 Rotten Tomatoes Score Debut Beats Near-Perfect Season 1
Image
Severance season 2 has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes, and the score beats that of the near-perfect season 1. Created by Dan Erickson, the hit Apple TV+ mystery series premiered in 2022, following Adam Scott's Mark Scout, an employee at Lumon Industries who has had his work memories surgically separated from his personal ones. After a glowing response to season 1 and repeated delays, expectations for Severance season 2 are high, and the first reviews for the new season have suggested that it will be worth the wait.

To accompany these positive early reviews, Rotten Tomatoes now reveals that Severance season 2 has debuted to a perfect 100% score with 33 reviews, as of writing. This score means that season 2 is now ahead of season 1, which has a 97% score with 116 reviews. It's worth noting, however, that season 2's score could fluctuate as more reviews are added.

Severance Season 2 Review: I'm Stunned The Brilliant Apple TV+ Series Actually Surpassed Its Excellent First Season
Image
When Severance premiered in 2022, it was unlike anything else on television. From its meticulous production design to its mystery box plot, it was a series that felt firmly of its time in its exploration of labor and workplace misery while having the vibe of a delicious throwback thanks to its mid-century modern look and the timeless quality of its central conceit.

From director and executive producer Ben Stiller and creator Dan Erickson comes “Severance.” Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and himself.

‘Severance’ Season 2 Review: Apple TV+ Drama Exceeds Herculean Expectations After a Long Wait
Image
There were reasons to worry about a “Severance” sophomore slump.

Foremost, the Ben Stiller-backed, 2022 Apple TV+ series was such a brilliantly realized paranoid thriller/sci-fi satire of the work-life balance illusion — recreating its first season magic would be a herculean task under the best circumstances.

Then there were reports that creator Dan Erickson and more experienced co-showrunner Mark Friedman weren’t getting along to such an extent that “House of Cards” veteran Beau Willimon was brought in to smooth out the follow-up’s trajectory. Hollywood strikes notwithstanding, production delays also seemed ominous.

Whatever went down, Season 2 finally premieres Jan. 17. And while there’s more than a bit of wheel-spinning in its first few episodes, saying “Aha, I knew it!” will make you sound like a clueless Outie guessing what goes down on a Lumon Industries severed floor. The new season explores profound ideas about what having one’s consciousness...

Severance Creator Says Mysterious Family Behind Lumon Takes Centerstage in Season Two: 'It Was Vitally Important That We Know Them'
Image
The Season 2 premiere of Severance is just weeks away, as fans ready themselves for the series' first new episode in nearly three years. Though creatives behind the show have been keeping plot details relatively under wraps in the lead-up to the premiere, series creator Dan Erickson recently revealed that Season 2 will focus heavily on one of Severance's biggest mysteries: The Eagan family.

Per GameRant, Erickson recently revealed in an interview with SFX magazine that fans will be getting more insights into the Eagans, the mysterious family behind Lumon Industries. While the Eagans loom large in the first season, with Lumon employees often referring to them as God-like figures, Erickson says that the second season will delve heavily into the mysterious family. "We're going to see some of their plans and machinations coming to fruition, or nearing fruition," Erickson said. "It was vitally important that we [the writers] know them, and that we know them well.

'I Actually Think This Is Better': Severance Creator Believes Season 2 Will Surpass Expectations
Image
After becoming a major hit for Apple TV+ and racking up fourteen Emmy nominations for its first season, the second season of Severance has a lot to live up to. Expectations are high for series creator Dan Erickson, who recently revealed that despite the tremendously long wait fans have had to endure, the second season will be even "better" than the first.

Per GamesRadar+, Erickson spoke with SFX magazine for their upcoming issue about the pressure of the second season, revealing how important it was for him and everyone involved to deliver a season that not only matches the standard set by season one, but even surpasses it. "I was in therapy because of all the wonderful feelings I was getting from people responding to the show, and the surprise of it," Erickson said. "I really thought it would be a much more niche audience. Then you’re like, 'How...
