Tom Lehrer, a mathematician and satirist whose musical influence peaked in the 1950s and ’60s with his topical songs, died on Saturday. He was 97.
Lehrer died at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, his friend, David Herder, told The New York Times.
Born on April 9, 1928, in Manhattan, Lehrer had a passion for piano from a young age. Though he never let his love for music distract from his academic career, either. As a math prodigy, he went on to study mathematics at Harvard at age 15, graduating with his bachelor’s degree in 1946. He later earned his master’s from Harvard the following year and then worked on a doctorate there and at Columbia University for the next several years, but never completed his Ph.D. thesis.
Throughout his time in school, Lehrer started writing songs in his free time. He eventually recorded his first solo album, Songs of Tom Lehrer, in 1953, which became a surprise hit.

The zombie horror genre has always been popular, but some films did it better than others. Ahead of a new zombie film, the addition in the 28 Days Laterfranchise, 28 Years Later, set to premiere on June 20, the highest-grossing zombie film of all time is making a splash on streaming.
In 2013, Brad Pitt starred in World War Z, which is now having a resurgence on streaming. The film recently headed to a new streaming home, its studio Paramount Pictures' streaming platform, Paramount+. However, it didn't make an imminent impact on the streaming platform, but World War Z reached the Top 10 globally on Netflix,Tudum reports.
World War Z has had a long, complicated relationship with Netflix. The zombie film left the streaming service in October 2024, but it's still available internationally. For the week between June 9 and 15, World War Z debuted in the charts again in seventh place. It received 3.8 million views and 7.4 million hours viewed.

David Frost Vs is a documentary series that opens a vault to a specific, potent moment in broadcast history. It revisits the career of the British interviewer by focusing each of its episodes on a singular, high-stakes encounter with a figure who defined the 1960s and 70s.
The initial installments feature The Beatles, Muhammad Ali, and Jane Fonda, with a later, climactic examination of Richard Nixon. The programme’s structure makes clear that its purpose is twofold: to dissect Frost’s own particular talent and to use his interviews as a prism through which to view the seismic cultural and political upheavals of the period.
This is a curated exhumation of television’s past, presenting pivotal exchanges to a new generation. It positions Frost not merely as a host but as a charismatic fulcrum, a man who consistently secured a front-row seat to history as it was being made.

More than 10,000. That’s how many interviews Sir David Frost conducted across his extraordinary career in television, spanning almost 50 years.
Frost is best known for his historic conversation with former President Richard Nixon, which created a sensation when it was broadcast in 1977. That encounter became the basis for the 2006 play Frost/Nixon, written by Peter Morgan (The Crown), and two years later a film directed by Ron Howard, starring Frank Langella as Nixon and Michael Sheen as Frost.
The new MSNBC documentary series David Frost Vs examines some of the greatest interviews conducted by the Television Hall of Fame inductee, including that incredible sit-down with Nixon as well as eye-opening discussions with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Elton John, Muhammad Ali, Jane Fonda, Nixon’s Vice President Spiro Agnew and more. On the latest episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, we explore the series with executive producer Wilfred Frost,...

David Fincher has worked with Brad Pitt on three films: Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. According to WorldofReel, the pair are looking to reunite on a new Netflix movie which could even be the director’s next project.
Take all of this with a grain of salt for now, but the report states that the project will be a sequel to a movie Fincher didn’t direct. Interesting. I wonder if this could be a resurrected version of the World War Z sequel, which Fincher was once slated to direct before it fell apart. Either way, Fincher and Pitt have done good work together, and it would be a treat to see them collaborate once again.

The following contains mild spoilers about “Zero Day.”
Conspiracy thrillers can feel like a dime a dozen in this age of streaming and limited series, with everyone looking for a good binge, filled with suspense and mystery, to take them away from it all, if only for six or eight hours.
Yet amid the chaotic, unsettling nature of the current political moment, such material hits differently, and especially so with Netflix’s latest entry in the genre, “Zero Day,” which consciously leans into current events — down to its slogan, “The Truth Has Been Weaponized” — by conspicuously and self-consciously paralleling them.
In that sense, the six-episode project that premiered Friday potentially lays bare a challenge facing development executives more broadly as they look ahead, to the extent the show’s themes come across as less escapist than exhausting.

Americans likely know David Frost best as the TV host who took on Richard Nixon in the landmark interview that served as the basis for Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon — a film that earned rave reviews from everybody except those who went in thinking it was a sequel to Michael Keaton’s harmonica-playing snowman movie.
Frost also had a huge impact on the comedy world, thanks to his 1960s satirical news program The Frost Report, which, along with the Frost-hosted That Was the Week That Was, inarguably paved the way for future news parodies such as The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update.”
The Frost Report’s supporting cast included Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett (who later starred in The Two Ronnies) as well as a young performer named John Cleese. The show’s writing staff also included future Monty Python members Graham Chapman, Michael Palin and Terry Jones.

Well, if you’re reading this, it means that you’ve survived yet another presidential election.
You might be thrilled with last night’s results, or you might be banging your head against a wall, wondering how you’re gonna survive the next four years.
Either way, at least we can all take solace in the fact that the quadrennial barrage of panhandling text messages has now come to an end.
(Dreamworks Pictures/20th Century Fox)
And now that you can once again turn on your TV without being bombarded by mudslinging political ads, what better time to revisit some of the best presidential biopics?
Politicians and pollsters might tell you they know what the future holds, but that picture is always a murky one.
Thankfully, we can always look to America’s past for encouraging reminders of challenges we’ve overcome and the heroes who have risen to the occasion.

British actor Kenneth Cope, a popular TV and film star in the 1960s and ’70s thanks to leading appearances in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Coronation Street, has died. He was 93.
Cope’s former agent Sandra Chalmers, of The Artists Partnership, announced that he died at his home in the northern seaside town of Southport in Sefton, Liverpool, the area where he was born in 1931.
Renny Lister, Cope’s wife of 63 years, and family members, including actor daughter Martha Cope, were by his side. He is also survived by children Nick and Mark.
Chalmers said Cope was an “incredible icon of British TV & film.” Cope and Lister met in 1961 when they both joined the cast of long-running ITV soap Coronation Street. He played petty crook Jed Stone as a semi-regular through the early and mid-1960s. He later returned to the role after an absence of 42 years.

Supreme Court oral arguments were made for social media. Social media was not made to make Supreme Court arguments persuasive or even understandable.
The court’s latest Donald Trump case is a perfect illustration. The justices on this court are relatively young. Their questions are clear and direct, and they all are engaged, respectful, and fair. Playwright James Graham has teamed up with Michael Sheen for three part BBC drama, The Way. Here’s the trailer.
Michael Sheen has spent a good portion of his career playing real-life figures, perhaps most notably David Frost in Ron Howard’s film version of Peter Morgan’s Frost/Nixon.
He has also played journalist Robbie Ross in Wilde, writer Jeremy Dyson in The League Of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse, Chris Tarrant in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? scandal drama Quiz and he played a heightened version of himself opposite David Tennant in Staged. He’s about to take on the role of Aneurin “Nye” Bevan in Tim Price’s play Nye at the National Theatre. Likewise, James Graham often writes political plays based around recent events.
The two have now teamed up for BBC drama The Way, which although it takes its inspiration from real events, follows fictional characters.

Donald Trump claimed that he was merely doing his “duty” as president by alleging that the 2020 election was “rigged” and “stolen,” therefore believes he deserves “immunity” from prosecution.

It was my obligation to do so, and the proof found is voluminous and irrefutable,” the former president wrote in a Truth Social post Sunday morning. “Therefore, among other reasons, of course I am entitled to Immunity.

In an interview with GQ, The Killer director was asked about his ideas for the canned World War Z 2 and how the HBO series The Last of Us allowed Fincher to dive deeper into the same themes as the Brad Pitt-led movie. He explained, “Well, it was a little like The Last of Us. I'm glad that we didn't do what we were doing, because The Last of Us has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff. In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite… they used it in their title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show.”

David Fincher is glad his ‘World War Z’ sequel never got off the ground. The ‘Fight Club’ filmmaker, 61, was set to do a follow up to director Marc Foster’s 2013 apocalyptic zombie movie starring Brad Pitt, 59, but said he was relieved it never happened as the plot was too similar to HBO’s hugely popular dystopian thriller ‘The Last of Us’. David told GQ: “Well, it was a little like ‘The Last of Us’. I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing, because ‘The Last of Us’ has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff. “In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite… they used it in their title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show.” The original ‘World War Z’ movie was inspired by Max Brooks’ 2006 book of the...

After "The Last of Us" video game became one of the most acclaimed games of the past decade and was lauded as a game-changer, this year saw its live-action TV adaptation heralded as one of the best video game adaptations, ever. Both are not only fantastic horror stories but gripping dramas with a focus on characters.
The "Last of Us" franchise has become such a game-changing addition to the zombie genre that instead of spawning cheap competitors that cash in on its success, it is actually scaring the competition away. At least one big zombie movie is reportedly no longer happening, in part due to "The Last of Us." Speaking with GQ for the release of "The Killer," David Fincher addressed his long-awaited sequel to "World War Z."

World War Z 2 was canceled, but director David Fincher isn't too unhappy about that as The Last of Us explores the themes he wanted to delve into. Both World War Z and The Last of Us revolve around a deadly virus that threatens humanity, with characters seeking a way to find a cure and end the conflict. The canceled sequel would have focused on Brad Pitt's character from World War Z, as he searched for a more effective solution to the virus outbreak.
It has been 10 years since the release of the film adaptation of World War Z, based on the 2006 novel by Max Brooks. And for a decade fans have been waiting for the sequel that, unfortunately, is destined to never appear. But for director David Fincher, it turned out to be a good thing. The reason? The Last of Us.

David Fincher is “glad” the long-gestating “World War Z” sequel was ultimately scrapped.
The “Killer” director told GQ UK that the slated “World War Z” sequel would have explored similar themes to hit HBO series “The Last of Us,” which was based off of the video game franchise of the same name.
“Well, it was a little like ‘The Last of Us,'” Fincher said of the follow-up he planned to Marc Forster’s 2013 zombie apocalypse movie. “I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing, because ‘The Last of Us’ has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff.”
Fincher continued, “In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite…they used it in their title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show.”

The 2013 film World War Z isn’t very popular, but it made a lot of money at the box office, pulling in over $540 million worldwide. So of course a sequel was put into development. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona worked on the project for a year before stepping away because they couldn’t quite figure out the story, despite having great set pieces in mind. Then the sequel very nearly went into production in 2019 with Fight Club director David Fincher at the helm – but the studio decided it to scrap it over budgetary issues. Now, during an interview with GQ Magazine UK, Fincher revealed that he’s glad his World War Z sequel didn’t get made because it would have been similar to HBO’s TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us – and the TV series format allows The Last of Us to...

Lauded filmmaker David Fincher nearly made the leap to blockbuster sequel territory with a follow-up to Brad Pitt’s 2013 zombie action thriller “World War Z,” but the director now says he’s glad the project didn’t come together because his take was similar to HBO’s “The Last of Us.”
Fincher boarded and started developing “World War Z 2” in 2017 after the Paramount Pictures film lost director J.A. But in 2019, Paramount canceled the project over budgetary concerns and Fincher moved on to his Netflix film “Mank.”
Speaking with GQ UK, Fincher teased a bit of what he had planned for the zombie sequel, comparing it to HBO’s acclaimed video game adaptation “The Last of Us.”

At the beginning of the Netflix documentary The Martha Mitchell Effect, Richard Nixon, deflated in his ex-presidential phase, sits for an interview with David Frost. A somber Nixon tells his natty interlocutor, “I’m convinced if it hadn’t been for Martha, there’d have been no Watergate.”
What he really meant, one can imagine, is that were it not for Martha Mitchell, Watergate wouldn’t have become the scandal that ended his presidency.
But as the documentary illustrates, blaming Martha Mitchell, obsessing over her, ridiculing and besmirching her had long and troubling antecedents to that Nixon interview. Generations born after Watergate don’t realize how much the mere mention of Attorney General John Mitchell’s wife set tongues wagging in Washington and across the country. The film directed by Anne Alvergue and Debra McClutchy is an Oscar contender for Best Documentary Short.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has rejected parole for Sirhan Sirhan, concluding that the man convicted of assassinating Robert Kennedy “still lacks the insight that would prevent him from making the kind of dangerous and destructive decisions he made in the past.”
Sirhan was granted parole last summer by a state panel, but Newsom still had the authority to nix his release.
“The most glaring proof of Sirhan’s deficient insight is his shifting narrative about his assassination of Kennedy, and his current refusal to accept responsibility for it,” Newsom wrote in an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times published Thursday.
The issue of whether Sirhan, 77, should be released divided children of Kennedy. Robert Kennedy Jr. and Douglas Kennedy argued for Sirhan’s release, but other children, as well as Kennedy’s widow Ethel, expressed opposition to it.
Sirhan’s attorney, Angela Berry, told the Associated Press that he would ask...

Michael Sheen isn’t one to mince his words. Even before Boris Johnson finds himself at the centre of the Christmas party scandal, the Welsh star of Frost/Nixon has our Pm in his crosshairs. “He’s the absolute worst of what politics can be,” says the 52-year-old, his voice rich and lilting. “A man who doesn’t seem to care or believe in anything other than his own advancement, and, as a result of immense privilege, has been able to get to the most powerful position in the country and then doesn’t use it to make people’s lives better. Everything is a game to him.” Sheen stops, reloads. “He seems to have no personal ethics, morals, beliefs, value system. So I will be immensely happy to see the back of him, not just from being prime minister but out of the political arena altogether. I hope he...

This is a sensational tribute two of legendary artists, Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams. The “conversation” is an overview of their respective careers, intersecting both as artists and friends. Voiced by two actors … Truman is by Jim Parsons and Tennessee is warmly reproduced by Zachary Quinto … director Lisa Immordino Vreeland uses letters, interviews and writings to express their life and philosophies. Filled with amazing archival footage, especially side-by-side separate interviews by British host David Frost, on the same set, the two are astounding in their parallel virtues and key differences.
