The members of Abba had a rare reunion Friday to receive one of Sweden’s highest honors at the royal palace in Stockholm.
Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were given the Royal Vasa Order by King Carl XVI Gustaf. The group was awarded the honor for their “very distinguished contributions within Swedish and international music life.”
The Royal Vasa Order is a knighthood given in recognition of personal efforts for Sweden, as well as the successful performance of public duties and assignments, the Associated Press writes. They are the first Swedish citizens in nearly 50 years to receive the honor.
The four members of Abba have not performed live together since 1982, and have only made a handful of appearances together over the ensuing decades. They most recently came together in 2022 at their avatar show Abba: Voyage in London. They used that occasion to to record 2021’s Voyage,...

Abba fans the world over yesterday celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Swedish supergroup’s Eurovision victory in 1974, and one crowd were treated to a surprise appearance by band member Bjorn Ulvaeus.
It was the group’s Eurovision triumph 50 years ago with their song Waterloo that kickstarted their phenomenal success, an event marked by Abba fans all across the world on Saturday with special events. The BBC, who hosted the event back in 1974 when it all began, gave over their BBC Two Channel to “Abba Night”, including a new documentary charting the band’s fortunes over the last five decades.
On stage in London, the cast celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Mamma Mia! musical, and then had one more treat for the audience – with the appearance of Bjorn Ulvaeus – one quarter of Abba, and one half of the band’s songwriting duo (along with Benny Andersson).

Patti LuPone — the Tony-winning, brassy Broadway legend with a penchant for strong opinions — let everyone know exactly how she feels about Abba and their hit “Mamma Mia!” musical in a new joint interview with Nathan Lane on Wednesdsay.
To hear her tell it on “The A24 Podcast,” LuPone has never even seen “Mamma Mia!” on stage or on film out of protest against the Swedish pop supergroup of 1970s fame.
“I’ve never seen ‘Mamma Mia!’ I’ve never seen any of the movies. Every time their music’s on, I turn it off,” LuPone said, detailing her hatred for the band. “I protest them.”
“How can you hate Abba?” Nathan Lane asked, shocked.
Turns out, it has to do with LuPone love of rock ‘n’ roll from the same era. The pop-dance stylings of members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad just never sat right with her.

Abba Voyage show will soon travel “around the world”, organisers have reportedly said.
The virtual concert, which sees hologram- style “Abba-tars” of the pop band performing a full setlist in a purpose-built arena, has seen enormous demand.
The unique concert, which opened last May, has sold over a million tickets.
Following its success, Universal Music Group has reportedly said that the show will soon go on tour around the world.
“Plans are now in development to take ‘Abba Voyage’ around the world,” said Universal Music Group chairman Lucian Grainge while on a company earnings call, reported Variety.
A representative for Abba Voyage declined to comment, but a source close to the project said that the focus was on London for the forseeable.

It finally happened: Abba announced they’re reuniting for the first time in 40 years, with a new album and a digital concert on the way. If the pair of singles they’ve released prove anything, it’s that they’ve been bottling up disco-pop lightning for years. They picked the perfect time, too: We could all use some of that glittery Swedish energy to get us through the darkness right now.
In honor of the group returning, let’s revisit their breakthrough at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, where they took home first place for “Waterloo.

It’s official: this is the summer of Abba. The blockbuster Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again brought the spectacle of Cher belting “Fernando.” That probably sent you back to the original Mamma Mia — yes, even the scene where Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan duet on “Sos.” Yet that somehow that just leaves you hungry for more. Abba will have five new songs on the market in 2021, and has pushed back their plans to do a holographic tour to support the music because of the pandemic.
The Swedish group – Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog and Bjorn Ulvaeus – were originally planning to release only two songs for their comeback. But the long process between the original announcement in 2018 and now has allowed them time to do more than planned. It will be the first new Abba music in 35 years.
Titles include I Still Have Faith In You and Don’t Shut Me Down.
In a statement announcing the new songs, Abba said, “The decision to go ahead with the exciting Abba avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence. We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio.”
For the tour, Abba will appear as their younger selves.

In the ’70s, you always tended to hear two things about Abba: that they were most stratospherically successful pop group since the Beatles (which was true); and that musically, they were a shiny bouncy joke — the quintessence of bubble-gum triviality, four smiling Swedish troubadours in space-age polyester disco suits singing happy jingles of ear candy. Not everyone felt that way, of course; the people who bought all those Abba records clearly dug them. Yet it’s no exaggeration to say that Abba, in their heyday, were reviled by the mainstream press, and that if you tried to make a case for taking them seriously you’d probably be laughed out of the room.
With Abba, it went that way for a long time, though to me that’s quite a mind-boggling statement. For whenever I think of Abba, the following words tend to spring to mind: pure, pop, luscious,...

Even though Abba’s unexpected announcement last week that the legendary quartet had reformed to record two songs had no mention of a tour beyond the virtual one scheduled for next year, rumors and anticipation for one began to build.
Yet any hopes that the group — Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Björn Ulvaeus, three-fourths of whom are in their 70s — would mount its first tour since 1979 were dashed by their rep on Monday.
“No — definitely not,” said Gorel Hanser, the group’s manager and spokesperson, told the U.K.’s Mirror. “We should remember them how they were in the 1970s, and listen to how they sing today.”
One of the new songs will be unveiled in a forthcoming two-hour BBC documentary in December, followed by a tour featuring holograms of the group — dubbed ABBAtars.
Gorel added that the quartet had been “happily surprised” by the reaction to their announcement of new songs.

Just in time for Halloween, musical oddity The Lure has joined The Criterion Collection. Here's Chris on its soundtrack...
Yet another Polish lesbian mermaid pop musical? Geez. For those that complain that musicals have no originality anymore, may I introduce a bloody disco ball of a film: The Lure. The story of two mermaids who come aground and quickly rise to success singing in a Warsaw nightclub, it’s both fairy tale and metaphor for female sexuality. But most importantly, the music kicks a whole lot of ass.
Led by young stars Marta Mazurek and Michalina Olszańska and with some disco diva stylings from Kinga Preis, the film is about the most delightful genre hybrid we have seen in some time. It’s a femme-centric mix of musical and horror, with more pointedly ironic sexuality than any music video once banned from MTV. It would be glib to describe it as a t.

The members of the legendary Swedish pop group Abba, who have teased fans with talk of a reunion for years, have finally, truly done it — if by "it" you mean appearing together at the opening of a Mamma Mia!-themed entertainment venture in Stockholm. Group members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad (see where "Abba" comes from?) appeared together for the first time since 2008 to celebrate the opening of Mamma Mia! The Party, a Greek tavern-themed venue where there will be performances of Mamma Mia!, the broadway show and now feature film with Meryl Streep. The Guardian reports that the group, originally composed of two couples which both divorced shortly before the group split up in 1982, declined to take a photo together on the red carpet, but did pose for individual pictures. According to The Independent, fans paid 1,340 kronor (roughly £110 or $155) to attend the event, which is...

Film-makers Stephen Frears, Béla Tarr, Costa-Gavras, and veteran theatre director Peter Brook are among 50 leading figures of the European creative community to sign a declaration “For a New Deal for Culture in Europe.”
Less than two months before the elections for the new European Parliament on May 25 and the appointment of a new European Commission, the declaration’s authors said they were “convinced that the digital revolution is an opportunity for culture. Just as culture is an opportunity for the digital economy, ‘fueled’ as it is by the ‘works of the mind’.”
“If we want our cultural policies to be modernized, one of the main issues is that all cultural works providers, in particular the Internet multinationals, be integrated into the economy of creation. It is an important goal to achieve in order to ensure equity between all cultural works providers. And it is a challenge for our future,”

Swedish group Abba is one of the biggest selling music acts in history, and even though they haven’t recorded together in over thirty years, their music still thrives, thanks to a continued presence in pop culture (including a Broadway show and film devoted to their music).
On a personal level, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida) were the Bizarro World version of Fleetwood Mac, as they experienced the unraveling of the Agnetha/Bjorn and Benny/Frida marriages during the group’s peak.
Bjorn and Benny were the music masterminds, but it was the presence of Frida and Agnetha that gave Abba their signature look and sound. Today is Agnetha’s 64th birthday, so let’s count down their greatest songs … not just the biggest hits, but some underrated gems, and a few solo songs from the ladies.

London, Feb. 17: Abba's former band member Bjorn Ulvaeus has admitted that the garish outfits, including the glittering hotpants, sequined jumpsuits and platform heels, were worn by the group as part of a tax-saving scheme.
According to Abba: The Official Photo Book, the Swedish group's trademark stage costumes were designed keeping in mind the Swedish laws that allowed cost of outfits to be deducted against tax if the clothes were too outrageous to be worn on a daily basis, the Guardian reported.
Ulvaeus asserted in the book that he honestly thought that he and his band mates looked like nuts in their heydays in the 70s, adding that nobody can have been as badly dressed on stage as they were. (Ani)...

Dust off your finest beige lipstick, because today is a good day to be an Abba fan.
Abba alumna Agnetha Fältskog hasn't released an album since 2004's My Colouring Book (which went triple platinum in Sweden and gold in the UK), and she's finally ramping up to release her follow-up album A on May 10. Thank your Swedish guardian angel (I get Bergman), because today you get to hear Agnetha's new single "When You Really Loved Someone."
Love the weird past tense. Love it. Check out the mature, awesomely sappy song below.
Gimme, gimme, gimme, because this video is money, money, money.
Look at those butter-colored glamor shots. I want this exact video to happen for Christine McVie in the near future.
This is exactly what a dignified Abba legend should be releasing in her 63rd year. It's a cute, sincere, stodgy, but classy video. Good for her. All we need...

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show.
