Stephen Colbert Starred In One Of The Worst-Rated Movies On IMDb
Image
Stephen Colbert has a long and prolific career in comedy and on television, stretching back to his TV debut in 1993 on the mystery series "Missing Persons." One of his notable TV breakouts was the short-lived 1995 sketch comedy series "Exit 57," which he co-created. This led to a longtime gig on "The Daily Show" beginning in 1997, a gig that lasted for eight years and 1,316 episodes. He was also a writer on the show. In 1999, he co-created, starred in, and wrote the cult comedy series "Strangers With Candy," all while taking various acting gigs and voice roles. In 2005, he created "The Colbert Report," which was a spoof of right-wing media punditry, and served to skewer the foolish actions of the George W. Bush administration.

Beginning in 2015, Colbert began hosting "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," one of the sharpest shows on late-night TV. He has nine Emmys. On the show, Colbert regularly and...

'Eugene the Marine' Trailer Finds 'Daredevil' Star Scott Glenn Battling a Serial Killer
Image
It’s time for Liam Neeson to pass on the aged action hero baton to another. While the Taken star’s continuing domination of the genre at 73 may be impressive, it’s nothing compared to this Daredevilstar who, at 86 years old, is all set to become our new favorite senior with a particular set of skills.

The Daredevil star chosen to take the lead in the first trailer for this killer new thriller is none other than acclaimed actor Scott Glenn. Alongside his role as Matt Murdock’s harsh-but-wise mentor, Stick, in the Marvel series, Glenn is best-recognized for the likes of The Right Stuff, The Silence of the Lambs, Backdraft, Training Day, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Leftovers, and more. Now, he takes on possibly his most challenging role yet as a former marine who finds himself at the center of a deadly game with a serial killer.

The first...

10 Comedy Legends Who Have Shilled for Fast Food
Image
Scroll long enough on the internet, and the odds are good you may see Arby’s ads starring Cedric the Entertainer from the Original Kings of Comedy and Black-ish star Anthony Anderson. They’re part of a long tradition of comedians shilling for fast-food chains. Some were championing hot wings or pizza before they hit it big, like Steve Carell. Others, like Kristen Wiig, entered the game after becoming a superstar. Then there’s Jason Alexander, who did it both before and after — proving there’s no wrong way to make a quick buck off a cheap burger.

Here are 10 other examples of comedians doing fast-food commercials, so we can see how they measure up against the new Arby’s campaign with Cedric and Anderson…

1 Jason Alexander for McDonald’s

A few years before he played George Costanza on Seinfeld, Alexander was his theater-kid self in a McDonald’s ad for the McD.

‘SNL’s’ 50th season takes on 9-time-champ ‘Last Week Tonight’ for the Best Scripted Variety Series Emmy
Image
When Last Week Tonight With John Oliver switched Emmy categories from Variety Talk Series to Scripted Variety Series, it put an end to Saturday Night Live's six-year winning streak. Last Week Tonight, which has claimed nine consecutive program trophies, is now hoping to take home No. 10 this year. But SNL's milestone 50th season should prove to be a worthy competitor.

First things first: there are six submissions this year for Best Scripted Variety Series, which means there will only be two nominees. Television Academy members who vote on this category are instructed to watch an episode of each contender (a requirement that is not present in the other program races), and then vote "yes" or "no" for whether they think each one is worthy of a nomination. The two entries that receive the highest amount of support will receive bids, as long as they are both over 70 percent approval,...

Dana Carvey Finally Leans In To Being ‘SNL’ Alum
Image
Even though Dana Carvey was never part of the same Saturday Night Live cast as Tracy Morgan, anytime the 30 Rock star would bump into the Wayne’s World star, he’d refer to him as “alum”.

It’s a feeling that only 165 other people know.

And Carvey, who was a cast member between 1986 and 1993, is responsible for some of SNL’s most iconic characters including Church Lady, Gareth Algar and Hans.

“We understand the glue and the wig, and the cards as well as the adrenaline rush of it and really being under prepared most of the time,” Carvey told Deadline.

But it wasn’t until the launch of his Fly on the Wall podcast, the SNL oral history show that he hosts with David Spade, that he really realized what being a part of this institution meant.

“It gave us more empathy. Even really successful cast members are a...

Image
Hulu has set a July premiere date for Zarna Garg’s new comedy special, TheWrap can exclusively reveal.

The special, titled “Zarna Garg: Practical People Win,” will premiere Friday, July 18 on Hulu. The streamer also revealed a first-look, which you can find below.

In the special, which marks Garg’s Hulu debut, the comedian will take aim at husbands, kids, in-laws and anyone who dares question an Indian mom’s wisdom, per the official logline. The hour-long special was filmed at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco.

This is all part of Hulu’s Hularious stand-up comedy slate, which kicked off back in November with Jim Gaffigan’s “The Skinny.” Other comedians who have been featured under the banner include Atsuko Okatsuka, Bill Burr, Chris Distefano, Ilana Glazer, Roy Wood Jr. and Matteo Lane. Emmys Acting Contenders: From Pedro Pascal and Diego Luna to Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Who Was Officially Submitted
Image
With Emmy nominations voting officially underway, the Television Academy’s ballots are offering insight into which performances could break through when nominations are unveiled on July 15. While submission totals in several key categories are down — reflecting the industry’s ongoing post-strike recovery — the races remain competitive and dynamic, with marquee names and fresh talent jockeying for recognition.

The lead actor and actress categories in drama are notably tighter this year. Only 77 actors and 75 actresses were submitted — down slightly from 2024 (81 and 67) and a sharp decline from 2022’s highs (134 and 114). As a result, each category will have only five nominees unless ties boost the field to six.

The drama actor race includes a trio of Latino contenders making waves: Diego Luna for “Andor,” Pedro Pascal for “The Last of Us,” and Ramón Rodríguez for “Will Trent.” They’ll face off against a rising generation, and established career performers such as Matthew Goode (“Dept.

‘SNL’ Writers Break Down the ‘Swirl’ of Tackling a Landmark 50th Season, an Anniversary Special and an Election in One Year
Image
It was a late Thursday morning in 30 Rock and “Saturday Night Live” head writers Kent Sublette, Streeter Seidell and Alison Gates were running on caffeine and willpower. As per “SNL” tradition, they stayed up all night Tuesday writing potential sketches for the week’s show. Then, on Wednesday night, they picked the sketches that would move forward for the penultimate episode of the season with host Walton Goggins.

This was on top of a star-studded 50th-season special in February with icons like Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell gracing the 8H stage once again. Oh, yeah, it was an election year, too.

“It was just kind of a swirl,” Seidell said of the season, which also saw cameos from the likes of Adam Sandler and Dana Carvey each week as the show celebrated its cultural legacy. He added, “Your brain just has to file it away as regular work,...

SNL 50: James Austin Johnson Talks The "Crazy" Pressure Of Doing Cold Opens With Comedy Legends
Image
Saturday Night Live had many standouts during its landmark 50th season, including James Austin Johnson's portrayal of President Donald Trump, who discusses the pressure of the role. He brought tremendous hilarity and satire during several of the cold opens of the NBC sketch comedy series this past year. Johnson joined SNL back in season 47, playing various roles. However, arguably his most well-known bit in the show thus far is his impression of the current United States President.

In an interview with Deadline, Johnson discusses how "crazy" it was to do the cold opens for SNL50 because they included several comedy legends that he grew up idolizing. The bit included Mike Myers as Elon Musk, Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden, Jim Gaffigan as Tim Walz, and Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris. Understandably, working with his idols on the same stage made Johnson want to raise his comedic level in...

‘SNL’ Cast Unpacks Season 50 Including Miss Eggy, Chloe Fineman’s Big Dumb Line, Straight Bowen Yang & Sarah Sherman Nearly Getting “Jacked”
Image
While Saturday Night Live celebrated its 50th anniversary this season – with a star-studded special that featured many of the 167 iconic cast members that have appeared on the show – there was another change that helped it “get back to its roots”.

Since Season 45, the season interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, cast, writers and crew have performed the read-through in studio 8H on the show floor, but this season they were able to get back to the 17th floor where it has historically always taken place.

Bowen Yang, who joined the show as a writer in Season 44 before being promoted to a cast member for Season 45, said returning to the 17th floor was a “huge deal”.

“From the first season to the 45th, read through is on the 17th floor, and then, because of Covid, because we just had to work with spatial limitations, and wanted a bigger space so we used...

Mike Birbiglia’s ‘Good Life’ Special Isn’t Afraid of the Big Emotions
Image
Maybe it’s serendipity that Mike Birbiglia and Sarah Silverman released their new Netflix specials just a week apart, considering that both devote so much comedy to elderly parents knocking on death’s door. In PostMortem, Silverman worries aloud that the topic is too heavy for stand-up, reflexively reaching for provocative punchlines whenever the feelings get too real. Birbiglia takes the opposite approach in his new special, The Good Life, leaning into the big emotions even when it means momentarily putting aside the laughs.

That’s nothing new for Birbiglia, whose comedy specials feel like especially funny episodes of NPR’s This American Life. In The Good Life, Birbiglia finds himself stretched thin by his dual roles as parent and son. How do you support an ailing parent with whom you’ve never been close? And how do you answer the big questions as your kids grow old enough to ask them?...

Atsuko Okatsuka Wants to Be the One Who Crumbles in ‘Father’ Trailer (Exclusive)
Image
Atsuko Okatsuka says her fans insist on calling her “Mother,” but she begs to differ.

“[They] are always out there being like, ‘Atsuko is mother. She is mother. She is mothering,” the comedian says in the trailer for her upcoming Hulu special. “Oh no, no, no. I … am father.”

Hence the title of the special, which premieres June 13 on the Disney-owned streamer: Atsuko Okatsuka: Father. Watch the trailer below.

Father is Okatsuka’s first special at Hulu — part of the platform’s “Hularious” lineup of stand-up sets — and second overall, following 2022’s The Intruder on HBO and Max. She calls herself “Father” because she is, in Hulu’s logline for the special, “thriving professionally yet clueless about basics.”

To the latter point, the trailer also features Okatsuka relating how she asked her husband how to turn on their washing machine, “and that’s how he realized he had been doing the laundry all these years.

Jim Gaffigan Says Furious Canadian Audiences Have Shifted: ‘We Hate You’
Image
Jim Gaffigan has always loved performing stand-up comedy in Canada, but these days, its citizens aren't always loving him back. On a recent episode of the We Might Be Drunk podcast, Gaffigan noted a marked change these days when he performs for Canadian audiences.

Over the years, Vancouver has always had amazing comedy crowds, Gaffigan noted, a motion seconded by one of the podcast’s cohosts, comedian Sam Morril. “I’m going there soon,” he said. “I love Vancouver.”

You could always count on Canada, Gaffigan reiterated. It wasn’t like performing in Europe, where “the English are just condescending in general” and the Irish turned on Americans after the Gulf War. “The Canadians were always like, ‘Yeah, you know, it's not you. It's your government doing this foreign policy.’”

But lately — maybe it has something to do with Donald Trump’s needling about Canada becoming America’s 51st state...

‘SNL’ Star Bowen Yang Says He’s Begged Lorne Michaels to Replace Him as Jd Vance: ‘Please Reach Out to Zach Galifianakis’

Bowen Yang hopes his days of playing Jd Vance on “Saturday Night Live” can soon end.

During a recent appearance on “The Daily Show,” Yang, who first portrayed the vice president in an October 2024 episode, said that he has begged “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels to have somebody else play the role of Vance on the prolific late-night sketch show.

“Lorne asked me [to play Jd Vance] and, I said, ‘Please, please, please don’t make me do this,’” Yang told “Daily Show” pundit Desi Lydic. “I really do my best with him, but every time I have to play him, I go to Lorne and I say, ‘You can do a buyback, You don’t have to stick with me.’”

The “Wicked” actor continued, “Please reach out to Zach Galifianakis. Please reach out to Taran Killam. But no, that’s my charge.”

Part of the reason why it is so “challenging” to play Vance,...

15 Best Law & Order: Svu Episodes, Ranked
Image
One of the greatest television spin-offs ever, which has since become the de facto flagship series for the "Law & Order" franchise, is "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Commonly referred to simply as "Svu," the show focuses on police detectives investigating especially heinous crimes in and around New York City. Given the nature of their law enforcement specialization, the characters in "Svu" often face darker, more sexually oriented crimes than the other "Law & Order" shows. The series has gone on to become one of the longest-running scripted primetime television shows of all time, eventually exceeding its predecessor.

Running since 1999, "Svu" is an American television institution, and it has earned that distinction through excellently crafted characters and cases. Whether it's the fan-favorite duo of Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) or newer generations of detectives, "Svu" has maintained a steadily impressive level of quality. For those that are...

Bowen Yang Begged Lorne Michaels “Don’t Make Me” Play Jd Vance On ‘SNL’
Image
Although Bowen Yang doesn’t want to play Jd Vance, he gives the impersonation his all.

The Saturday Night Live star recalled asking Lorne Michaels “please, please, please don’t make me do this” after he was cast in the “challenging” role the vice president on the long-running NBC sketch comedy show.

“First of all — God’s honest truth, I really do my best with him, but every time I have to play him, I go to Lorne and I say, ‘You can do a buyback. You don’t have to stick with me. Please reach out to Zach Galifianakis. Please reach out to Taran Killam,'” he admitted on The Daily Show. “But, no, that’s my charge.”

Yang added, “I worked with — you guys are going to roll your f—ing eyes. I worked with an accent coach. We had to find the middle between Appalachian but Ohio.

Bowen Yang Wants Lorne Michaels to Recast J.D. Vance on ‘SNL’: “Please Don’t Make Me Do This”
Image
Bowen Yang is tired of impersonating J.D. Vance on Saturday Night Live.

The Wicked actor first played the vice president of the United States in September 2024 — a mere two months before Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election. On Thursday, Yang appeared on The Daily Show and said that despite playing the character for less than a year, he would be more than happy if Lorne Michaels recast the role of the Republican politician on SNL.

“Loren asked me [to play Vance] and, I said, ‘Please, please, please don’t make me do this,’” Yang explained to host Desi Lydic. “I really do my best with him, but every time I have to play him, I go to Lorne and I say, ‘You can do a buyback, You don’t have to stick with me.’”

The actor and comedian offered the SNL creator a few options for his replacement: “Please reach out to Zach Galifianakis.

Shout! Studios Acquires Gravitas Ventures
Image
Shout! Studios, the multi-platform media company backed by Oaktree Capital Management, has acquired Gravitas Ventures from Anthem Sports & Entertainment, Inc.

The deal was finalized over the weekend, we hear, with employees at Shout! being notified this morning. It came following rumblings of multiple layoffs at boutique distributor Gravitas. When Deadline reached out to various staff members at the distributor, we were met with bounce-backs, seemingly confirming sudden departures.

The ambition on Shout!’s part is to grow its content portfolio with the acquisition of entertainment companies and their content libraries, while continuing to partner with independent rights owners to monetize content and launch new streaming channels.

Going forward, Shout! Studios and Gravitas Ventures will operate as two distinct brands. Each will continue to actively distribute content from its respective catalogue, leveraging a scaled combined distribution organization to better monetize content across traditional and digital channels. The deal gives Shout! access to more than 3,300 scripted,...

Mitch Hedberg Doc Director on 20th Anniversary of Comedian’s Death: “We Need Mitch More Than Ever”
Image
Twenty years ago, the comedy world was stunned by the death of beloved performer Mitch Hedberg, who was still on the rise not long after having released what would become his best-selling album.

Known for his absurdist, one-liner-style delivery, Hedberg was revered by fans and fellow comics alike. He made 10 appearances on The Late Show With David Letterman and has three stand-up albums, including Mitch All Together, released in December 2003 and certified gold in 2021. Hedberg, who had been dubbed “the next [Jerry] Seinfeld” by Time magazine, was found dead from a drug overdose at age 37 on March 30, 2005.

But his unique perspective has continued to bring joy to fans new and old, and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Jeff Siegel (Billy Joel: The 100th) is currently working to celebrate Hedberg’s legacy with a feature documentary. The movie, which does not yet have an announced title or release date, has wrapped principal photography and will include archival footage,...
